BETTER GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION
— DOROTHY BROWN OFFERS POLITICAL ADVICE — FOR A PRICE – Katie Drews and Dane Placko
http://www.bettergov.org/news/dorothy-brown-offers-political-advice-%E2%80%94-for-a-price
(FROM THE ARTICLE: WHY IT MATTERS: Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown has long been dogged by allegations of pay-to-play in the administration of her office even as she also faces criticism for sloppy and inefficient record keeping. The day after federal prosecutors said Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown received what they described as bribe money from an employee, Brown was collecting money in a different way – by selling political advice for nearly $200 a head. Brown, who was elected last year to her fifth term as clerk despite a federal grand jury investigation of the hiring and promotion practices within her office, hosted a training seminar on a Saturday last month for people interested in running for public office. For $175 a ticket, plus $19.95 for an optional handbook, the day-long event promised “instruction on every aspect of being a candidate as a whole,” according to a flyer for the event. “I realized that a lot of people want to run for public office but they don’t really know what to do,” Brown said during the program. “I’m about the business of not being selfish but giving back, and that’s what this is all about.” As part of a Better Government Association and FOX 32 investigation, a BGA reporter paid the fees and attended the first half of the seminar, which took place in a hotel conference room in the Illinois Medical District on Chicago’s West Side. Among the eight other participants, whose names the BGA obtained either from a sign-in sheet or when they introduced themselves to the others in the room: a Cook County judge, one of Brown’s neighbors and two individuals with apparent ties to Brown’s office – a man named Christopher Hodges and a woman named Zoe Neely. A Christopher Hodges has worked in the clerk’s office since 2004 and is a manager making $56,000 a year, according to 2016 payroll records. A Facebook profile page that identifies Hodges as an employee of Brown’s office has a photo of the same man who attended the seminar. The Facebook page also states Hodges is a “servant” at Brown’s church, King of Glory Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, on Chicago’s South Side. Neely is identified on LinkedIn as Zalita Zoe Neely. Her mother is Madina Neely, who has been employed in the clerk’s office since 2008 and has worked as Brown’s scheduler, according to sources. According to payroll records, Madina Neely was an office assistant in 2015 making $37,000 a year but last year made $63,000 as a manager. None of them could be reached for comment. Brown’s spokeswoman Jalyne Strong declined to answer questions about their employment or on the seminar as a whole. Instead, Strong said in an emailed statement the seminar was “not a part of the operations” of the clerk’s office and that she had “no information about it.” She added that “any attendees would have had to learn about it independent of the clerk’s office.” Experts contacted by the BGA questioned whether it’s appropriate for the clerk to accept money from her employees. Even though the event was open to the public and outside work hours, the experts said Brown opened herself up to the criticism that employees could feel obligated to participate since she is their boss. “You want to make sure protections are in place to make sure they don’t feel pressure to be part of anything they don’t want to,” said Sarah Brune, executive director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. “It’s a delicate relationship when it’s boss to employee.” This isn’t the first time questions have been raised about Brown’s interactions with her employees.)

FEDERALIST
— But He Folds! 5 Big Fights Where Trump Is Backing Down  The whole point of Donald Trump was supposed to be: BUT HE FIGHTS. But we shouldn’t be surprised to see the Trump administration’s bluster melting away. – Robert Tracinski
http://thefederalist.com/2017/03/06/but-he-folds-5-big-fights-where-trump-is-backing-down/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: 5) Sending up trial balloons about amnesty for illegal immigrants. Just before his recent address to Congress, Trump sent up trial balloons to the press about opening up a “path to citizenship” for some illegal immigrants, precisely the sort of thing he condemned during his campaign as “amnesty.” This caused some of his supporters, including that guy with the lovely avatar of Lady Liberty telling pesky immigrants to get off her lawn—to panic. Now, maybe Trump was just yanking the media’s chain. But this looks to me more like a negotiator taking a hard line in public while trying to hint behind the scenes that he’s really open to a deal. We know from Trump’s history with “Dreamers” that he probably wants to support some form of amnesty. But he painted himself into a corner by starting his campaign with disparaging remarks about immigrants and recruiting a support base of anti-immigration fanatics. So he’s trying to figure a way out of the box and toward a deal. Maybe it’s true that “Most Trump supporters can recognize that his initial promises of mass deportation were an opening bid that would eventually get bargained down to something more humane.” But that kind of sounds like politics as usual, right? I’ll grant that some of these issues are not settled yet, and maybe Trump will stick to a hard line on some of them. My point is that we shouldn’t be surprised at signs that he won’t. We shouldn’t be surprised if the bluster of the campaign season is melting as it encounters the reality of political compromise and our political system’s natural resistance to radical change. I’ve known all along that the reason you’re not getting everything you want isn’t because we didn’t have the right leader who would be bolder and more shirtlessly manly than everyone else. The reason is that the American people are not overwhelmingly in favor of your wish list, or mine. This has been true for all of my adult life. I’ve managed to get used to it and to expect a series of close contests, some incremental victories, and if we’re lucky now and again a bold step forward, while we work at the more difficult job of long-term ideological change. It’s a job that calls for the real tough guys, the ones who are willing to put in hard and unrewarding work over the long haul. Trump supporters who are ready to grow out of seductively easy tactics like calling their opponents rude names are welcome to join us. In the meantime, take what you can get from the Trump administration, but don’t be too crushed when he turns out to be just another politician.)

ACCURACY IN MEDIA
— Betsy DeVos Pledged to Protect Free Speech at Schools – Malcolm A. Kline  (DIERSEN: Democrats run public education in America. They increasingly make it clear that “cranking out good little Democrats” is their top priority, if not their only priority.  I am far more conservative today because my outstanding parents sent me to Trinity Lutheran Grade School in Crete 1953-1962 and then to Hope Lutheran Grade School in Park Forest 1961-1962 to stay with the Missouri Synod.)
https://www.academia.org/betsy-devos-pledged-to-protect-free-speech-at-schools/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If U. S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos came to the Conservative Political Action Conference in order to establish her street cred with conservatives, she probably succeeded. “I am, perhaps, the first person in America to tell Bernie Sanders that there is no free lunch,” she told the audience at CPAC. Perhaps more importantly, she showed the audience of college students that in current and upcoming battles over free speech on campus, she has their back. “The faculty, from adjuncts to deans, tell you what to do and, more ominously, what to think,” she said at CPAC. She urged the students to take a page from her boss’s book and “e-mail, tweet and snapchat every politician who thinks the status quo is okay.” The National Education Association (NEA) teachers union famously opposed DeVos’s nomination. “Betsy DeVos, who has spent decades working to dismantle public education and privatize public schools, is dangerously unqualified and lacks the experience we should all demand in America’s secretary of education,” NEA President Lily Eskelsen García stated in January. “If confirmed, she would become the first secretary of education with zero experience with public schools.”)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— The Exhaustion of American Liberalism  White guilt gave us a mock politics based on the pretense of moral authority. – SHELBY STEELE  (DIERSEN: Who despises you, if not hates you? The following despise me, if not hate me: those who are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-exhaustion-of-american-liberalism-1488751826
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The recent flurry of marches, demonstrations and even riots, along with the Democratic Party’s spiteful reaction to the Trump presidency, exposes what modern liberalism has become: a politics shrouded in pathos. Unlike the civil-rights movement of the 1950s and ’60s, when protesters wore their Sunday best and carried themselves with heroic dignity, today’s liberal marches are marked by incoherence and downright lunacy—hats designed to evoke sexual organs, poems that scream in anger yet have no point to make, and an hysterical anti-Americanism. All this suggests lostness, the end of something rather than the beginning. What is ending? America, since the ’60s, has lived through what might be called an age of white guilt. We may still be in this age, but the Trump election suggests an exhaustion with the idea of white guilt, and with the drama of culpability, innocence and correctness in which it mires us. White guilt is not actual guilt. Surely most whites are not assailed in the night by feelings of responsibility for America’s historical mistreatment of minorities. Moreover, all the actual guilt in the world would never be enough to support the hegemonic power that the mere pretense of guilt has exercised in American life for the last half-century. White guilt is not angst over injustices suffered by others; it is the terror of being stigmatized with America’s old bigotries—racism, sexism, homophobia and xenophobia. To be stigmatized as a fellow traveler with any of these bigotries is to be utterly stripped of moral authority and made into a pariah. The terror of this, of having “no name in the street” as the Bible puts it, pressures whites to act guiltily even when they feel no actual guilt. White guilt is a mock guilt, a pretense of real guilt, a shallow etiquette of empathy, pity and regret. It is also the heart and soul of contemporary liberalism. This liberalism is the politics given to us by white guilt, and it shares white guilt’s central corruption. It is not real liberalism, in the classic sense. It is a mock liberalism. Freedom is not its raison d’être; moral authority is. When America became stigmatized in the ’60s as racist, sexist and militaristic, it wanted moral authority above all else. Subsequently the American left reconstituted itself as the keeper of America’s moral legitimacy. (Conservatism, focused on freedom and wealth, had little moral clout.) From that followed today’s markers of white guilt—political correctness, identity politics, environmental orthodoxy, the diversity cult and so on. This was the circumstance in which innocence of America’s bigotries and dissociation from the American past became a currency of hardcore political power. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, good liberals both, pursued power by offering their candidacies as opportunities for Americans to document their innocence of the nation’s past. “I had to vote for Obama,” a rock-ribbed Republican said to me. “I couldn’t tell my grandson that I didn’t vote for the first black president.”)
— Should Parents Use Retirement Savings for College Tuition?  Most financial pros advise against it: You can borrow for college, but not for your retirement – CHANA R. SCHOENBERGER  (DIERSEN: Do you have children?  Government is nasty.  Politics is nasty.  People are nasty. Ever since the 1980s, when my wife and I gave up trying to have children, we did not adopt, and we did not become foster parents, my nasty critics/opponents, their nasty operatives, and their nasty dupes have demonized, denigrated, and condemned my wife and I as being selfish rich DINKs (dual income, no kids). Soon, if not already, those who promote LGBTQ activity will not only demand that you PROMOTE LGBTQ ACTIVITY, they will demand that you ENGAGE IN LGBTQ ACTIVITY.

— Working Longer May Benefit Your Health – CHRISTOPHER FARRELL (DIERSEN: For my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government, destroying their superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran was always their top priority.  In September of 1997, they made it very clear that if I did not take their early retirement “offer” by the end of the month, they would viciously kill me figuratively if not literally.  All my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes paint themselves as being physiological terrorists.  Should I write a book about them?)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/03/business/retirement/working-longer-may-benefit-your-health.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Are there health benefits to staying in the work force longer?  The scientific research is inconclusive, though it tends to tilt toward “yes.” This is particularly pronounced among people who find work fulfilling in the first place, who tend to be office workers, teachers and others whose workplace is not, say, a factory or a construction site. More so than people in most previous generations, baby boomers are continuing to work past their early 60s, often well beyond. Sometimes, this means delaying retirement from a longtime job, but it can instead involve some kind of bridge job, part-time employment or self-employment. It turns out that, these days, older Americans who retire — in the sense of completely withdrawing from the paid labor force — are increasingly in the minority. “What is the benefit of work? Activation of the brain and activation of social networks may be critical,” Nicole Maestas, an associate professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School, said in an interview.)

Who are we to start rounding them up from a government initiative that some of our residents may not agree with?” he said. Schielke did not answer the question directly, speaking instead about how Batavia’s immigrant history and how it adopted a fair housing ordinance decades ago and is an integrated community. Dinwiddie said the city should not become a sanctuary city because it would put a burden on police, and Salvati said he didn’t know if he would “put the onus” on police to “be out there looking proactively.”)

The NACC has hosted the State of the City Address for the past 33 years for the Naperville community starting with Mayor Peg Price. “The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce plays an important role in success and retention of businesses in our region,” said Nicki Anderson, NACC President/CEO.  “Our partnership with the City and Naperville Development Partnership are crucial to the strength and viability of a successful business climate.” The Mayor also uses the program as a time to not only to recognize Naperville’s accomplishments, but also the people who made it possible.  The State of the City Address honors city officials and their years of service to the community. “The State of the City address is an important venue to showcase the City’s commitment to economic growth, efficient government and serving our community well,” Mayor Steve Chirico stated in the news release.  “This year’s address will celebrate our shared accomplishments, provide a roadmap for the year to come and inspire our businesses to continue making Naperville the premier location to live, work and play in the region.”)

— REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS SAY THEY’RE SKIPPING TOWN HALLS FOR ‘SAFETY REASONS’ – Stacey Baca
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/gop-lawmakers-say-theyre-skipping-town-halls-for-safety-reasons/1783734/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some Republican congressmen are facing angry voters in their districts, concerned with the repeal of the Affordable Care Act and other issues with the new president’s agenda. They say security concerns are why they’re canceling town halls. Congressman Randy Hultgren announced Friday afternoon that one of his staff members quit this week because she was worried about her safety at the office. The police chief in Campton Hills confirmed they have handled a few minor calls. There has been no violence at any of the town hall meetings held across the country, but the congressman says safety is the reason he won’t hold town hall meetings. Republicans have faced protests at home, including Hultgren. He has decided for now to meet with constituents only in small groups, not town halls. “They get frustrated having individual time with me, or a small group meeting with me. They want to have something that is more theatrical. I just don’t know if that is beneficial right now,” he said. Hultgren represents part of McHenry, Kane and Kendall counties. “We just want to make sure that everybody is safe, that we have this respect in the process that we can listen from each other, learn from each other, disagree at times but with a level of respect,” he said. Although Hultgren used former congresswoman Gabby Giffords’ shooting as an example, Giffords recently released her own response, saying politicians must face their constituents and hold town hall meetings. Congressman Peter Roskam, who represents the far northwest and western suburbs, has also had protests in his districts. Instead of town halls, he’s using phone meetings. “Rather than having a meeting with 200 people that are essentially shouting at one another, I thought it was more helpful to meet with 18,000 people on the phone to have a wider range of opinion and much more feedback,” he said. The protests, for some, harken back to the early days of the Tea Party. Senator Dick Durbin, who met with Tea Partiers at the time, sold an old boxing quote to put it in perspective. “They used to say something about Joe Lewis, the great heavyweight champion, they used to say something about his opponents: they can run but they can’t hide. The same is true about members of Congress. You can avoid your constituents for some period of time, but ultimately they get the last word in the election,” Durbin said. Voters have criticized Republican lawmakers for shirking their duty to their constituents and continue to push for town hall meetings. Experts said things will only get worse for lawmakers because soon they will start voting on laws, and voters will follow how their representatives are voting.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-age-bias-edit-plummer-terkel-scully-0304-jm-20170303-story.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Yes, this is often said to be the Age of the Millennial. And virtually every discussion of generations quickly references baby boomers. But assigning stereotypes to different age groups isn’t just annoying. It’s often misleading. Case in point: America’s concept of retirement has changed. Many people are working well into their 70s and 80s. Insert here your own story about the 83-year-old co-worker who never got sick and was always the first to arrive each day. And workers with that depth of life and work experience bring to the table a wealth of institutional and subject knowledge about their fields. That’s a wellspring that millennials can tap into, and employers should covet. Too often, they don’t. Ageism — that is, discrimination based on someone’s age — is rampant in today’s workplace. According to a study by AARP in 2013, 3 of every 5 older workers reported having seen or experienced age discrimination at work. Age discrimination complaints brought to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission have jumped 26 percent over the last decade, from 16,548 in 2006 to 20,857 last year. Madigan is right to take up this issue, and we hope the job search firms that have been warned make the right fixes. A spokeswoman for CareerBuilder told the Tribune’s Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz that the company “is committed to helping workers of all ages find job opportunities, and is fixing this unfortunate oversight.” That’s good to hear. After all, what difference does it make if someone’s 23, 43, 63 or 83 — as long as he or she can get the job done well. Mark Twain put it best: “Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”)

(FROM THE LETTER: Each year it seems that gambling becomes more pervasive. In Illinois, video gambling sites have increased significantly in the past 18 months, and there is serious discussion about expanding the number of casinos. For most people gambling is entertaining, but for the problem gambler it can eventually lead to the loss of a home, job, family and friends. Common signs of a problem gambler often include lying to your partner about where you’ve been and how you’ve spent your money; lost sleep due to gambling stress and anxiety; reducing time one spends with family and work to gamble; feeling guilty about gambling; trying to cut back in gambling without success. Gambling disorders are treatable, but professional help is needed. Renz Addiction Counseling Center is offering free gambling assessments throughout 2017 and free treatment during National problem Gambling Awareness Month this March at our Two American Way location in Elgin. For more information on Renz Center’s problem gambling services, visit www.RenzCenter.org or call the Center at (847) 742-3545.)

ILLINOIS TIMES
— The vanishing Statehouse press corps  In an era of mainstream news cutbacks, ideological media step in – Tara McClellan McAndrew  (DIERSEN: Since 2000, your GOPUSA Illinois Editor has increasingly stepped in a) to counter the media’s ever-increasingly pro-Democrat slant and b) to fill Republican communication voids.)
http://illinoistimes.com/article-18344-the-vanishing-statehouse-press-corps.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As mainstream coverage of government has decreased, new media have risen to fill the void. According to the Pew’s 2014 study, there was a boom across the nation in “ideological” organizations covering state government after the Great Recession. That includes outlets funded by politicians or partisan groups which can be designed to look like mainstream media. A couple examples are the Illinois Policy Institute and Local Government Information Services, which have links to the Republican Party. Currently, there are no known media outlets covering Illinois government that have ties to other parties. In 2015, the Illinois Policy Institute, which already ran Illinois News Network, purchased Illinois Radio Network. It covers state government, among other topics. In 2013 and 2014, the Institute’s Illinois News Network tried to get press credentials from the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate, but was denied because of its relationship to a partisan, lobbying group – the Institute. The Institute sued and took its case all of the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, but lost. State Journal-Register reporter Bernard Schoenburg has written several columns about Republican ties to the Institute and Local Government Information Services, including donations Governor Bruce Rauner made to both groups, totaling at least $3 million. Local Government Information Services has online websites with articles about communities around the state. One called the Sangamon Sun covers the Springfield area. On Feb. 13, its headline was: “State Comptroller Mendoza added to BossMadigan.com,” referring to an Illinois Republican Party site. Some ideological media, like the Illinois News Network, make their audio and articles available for free. In an Oct. 7, 2015, column, Schoenburg wrote: “Any of those papers or stations using that content and not clearly identifying the source as the Illinois Policy Institute are doing a disservice to their readers and listeners.” Free content is very attractive to small radio stations or newspapers with limited staff and budgets, Wheeler says. “Having fewer Statehouse reporters and fewer independent, unbiased sources of news committed to the consistent practices of journalism will make it easier for the folks who are peddling the slant to have their stuff accepted and used.” In a democracy, media have an important task, Wheeler adds, especially at a time when the federal government is making many decisions that could affect the responsibilities of state governments. “The First Amendment wasn’t created with the idea that we have to help people who are going to be running newspapers to make a lot of money.” As one Statehouse reporter I talked to put it: “Somebody has to cover the news!”)

FEDERATION FOR AMERICAN IMMIGRATION REFORM
— The Impact of New and Expanded  E-Verify Measures on Unemployment Rates Since the Great Recession  (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, all employers should be required to use E-Verify. If an employer does not use E-Verify, a) it shouts that it wants cheap labor, b) it shouts that it hires and exploits illegals, c) it shouts that it despises if not hates American workers, d) it shouts that it encourages people to come to America illegally, e) it shouts that it encourages people to stay in America illegally, and f) it shouts that it encourages people to bring other people to America illegally.)
http://www.fairus.org/issue/the-impact-of-new-and-expanded-e-verify-measures-on-unemployment-rates-since-the-great-recession
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congress created E-Verify in 1996, and launched the program in 1997, to assist employers in verifying new employees’ eligibility to work in the United States. The stated goal is to provide fast and reliable verification by comparing an employee’s I-9 form to U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration databases.(1)
Though easy to use and accessible to all employers, participation in the E-Verify program is not required by federal law. However, the 2011 Supreme Court case Chamber of Commerce v Whiting affirmed that states may constitutionally pass legislation requiring some or all employers within their jurisdiction to use E-Verify. Unfortunately, most states have left its use optional, or only require certain employers to use the program.(2) Does E-Verify Work? The E-Verify program protects job opportunities for American workers by ensuring that employers using the program only hire individuals who are authorized by the federal government to work in the United States. Opponents of E-Verify often claim, however, that the program’s 99.7 percent verification accuracy rate isn’t reliable enough and assert that any false-positive returns will remain uncorrected, even when appealed.(3) Some opponents go as far as to argue that requiring widespread usage of the program will result in increased unemployment rates. To determine whether state E-Verify laws impact job markets after their implementation, this report examines the U-6 unemployment rate(4) in states one year after instituting or expanding E-Verify requirements. The U-6 unemployment rate includes discouraged job-seekers who have stopped searching for employment and those who are working part time for purely economic reasons – as opposed to those who may be working part time by choice.)

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/03/03/illinois-congressman-uses-derogatory-term-when-describing-raucous-town-halls.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “While there was no malicious intent, I regret that my words may have distracted from an important point,” Bost said. “When the booing and shouting drowns out the conversation we’re trying to have with our constituents, it becomes that much harder to govern.” Some Republicans in Congress have participated in rowdy town halls in which crowds have expressed concerns about President Donald Trump’s policies. A few, like Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz, have been shouted down and booed. Bost described the town halls as “out of control, which means you don’t actually get to talk to people and listen, and we’re looking for ways to do that.” In an editorial, the Southern Illinoisan noted that the people of his district want to have their voices heard, and doing it over the phone or the internet just won’t do. It went on to say, “It is part of his job description to, from time to time, take the heat. A leader should not be reluctant to meet with his constituents personally.”)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— Journalists Demand Access, but Sometimes They’re Selective   An Illinois reporter Scott Reeder lost his press credential when he left the legacy media to work for a nonprofit. – JACOB HUEBERT
https://www.wsj.com/articles/journalists-demand-access-but-sometimes-theyre-selective-1488498959
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The national press was outraged after reporters from CNN, the New York Times, Politico, BuzzFeed and the Los Angeles Times were kept out of an off-camera White House press briefing last week. CNN anchor Jake Tapper called the action “un-American.” Washington Post executive editor Marty Baron said it was “appalling” and “undemocratic.” National Press Club president Jeffrey Ballou labeled the exclusion “deeply disturbing and completely unacceptable.” Their concerns are valid: Government officials can silence critics by picking and choosing who gets access. But few have noted that the Trump administration’s actions are far from unprecedented. Similar scenes have played out at all levels of government and media, yet the press rarely object so vociferously. Worse, mainstream outlets sometimes are complicit in helping the government limit the access of other journalists. A prime example comes from Illinois. As an attorney for the Liberty Justice Center, I represented a veteran journalist who was denied statehouse press credentials in Springfield. Scott Reeder had been a reporter and editor for more than 25 years. He spent the first 20 years of his career at newspapers in Texas, Nevada and Illinois, racking up journalism awards along the way. He became a well-known fixture in the Illinois Capitol. Then he decided to start a statehouse news service to keep doing the same work he had always done. Joining with the Illinois Policy Institute, a government watchdog organization, Mr. Reeder planned to launch his new venture in 2013. But when he applied for statehouse press credentials, Mr. Reeder got the cold shoulder from lawmakers who decide which outlets can cover them. Mr. Reeder was a tough reporter, ruffling feathers of politicians on both sides of the aisle—as journalists should—and his application was denied because of his association with the institute. Officials determined that under the legislature’s rules Mr. Reeder was no longer entitled to a pass because the institute was registered as a lobbyist and wasn’t “primarily” engaged in news reporting. But the legislature never excluded reporters from for-profit newspapers simply because their parent companies lobbied and engaged in other businesses besides news. The Chicago Tribune had no trouble getting credentials when its then-owner, the Tribune Co., hired a firm to lobby on its behalf and operated businesses unrelated to news, such as the Chicago Cubs. We challenged Mr. Reeder’s exclusion from the press gallery on First Amendment grounds. The courts declined to consider the claim, holding that “absolute legislative immunity” precludes lawsuits over credentialing decisions. The precedent was a 1975 case involving access to the congressional press galleries. In 1972 the Standing Committee of Correspondents had voted to exclude writers from Consumer Reports because the magazine was published by a nonprofit advocacy group rather than a traditional news organization. The publisher sued. A federal judge ruled that the exclusion violated the First Amendment, which prohibits the government from arbitrarily keeping reporters out of press facilities based on who employs them or the ideas they advocate. But the decision was overturned on appeal. The judges held they could not interfere with the internal operations of Congress, even to vindicate the First Amendment. In the Consumer Reports case, it was journalists who made the decision to exclude. The Standing Committee, to which Congress delegates authority over credentials, is composed of journalists from traditional news organizations (including, in some years, The Wall Street Journal). As for Mr. Reeder, he got little support from fellow reporters. Some even published articles attempting to delegitimize his work because he was no longer employed by a legacy media outlet. The White House has not always provided equal access either. In 2009 the Obama administration tried to exclude Fox News reporters from a round of interviews with a Treasury official. A top White House staffer had recently described Fox as “not really a news station.” In that case, other media organizations lined up behind Fox, and the White House eventually relented. But the incident didn’t get nearly as much attention as last week’s brouhaha. It’s good that the media united in objection to the Trump administration last week. Perhaps the incident will serve as an important civics lesson about the dangers of the government granting special privileges to select media outlets. Here’s to hoping the media will continue to advocate equal access, just as forcefully as they are now, for journalists of all stripes covering all levels of government.)

AMERICAN THINKER
— Welcome to the real world, federal bureaucrats – Thomas Lifson  (DIERSEN: Rather than demonizing, denigrating, and condemning the benefits that federal employees have, why not call for private sector employers to provide such benefits?  Far too many who say that they are Republican talk and act like they are operatives or dupes for private sector employers who screw their employees.)
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2017/03/welcome_to_the_real_world_federal_bureaucrats.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A specter haunts Washington, D.C.: federal workers, accustomed to job security, may actually be reduced in status to the level of private-sector peasants, who must live with the possibility of being laid off due to workforce reductions.  The Washington Post, in many ways the trade paper of the government industry, shares the anxiety of its readership: “Federal workers are growing increasingly anxious at the prospect of massive budget cuts President Trump proposed this week that would pave the way for increased military spending. Employees who list endangered species, collect taxes and distribute aid to foreign countries are fearing for their livelihoods as they sift through rumors and wait to see whether their offices will be targeted for steep reductions.”  Those of us who work in the private sector have never had the job security of a federal employee.  And few of us have the retirement benefits they enjoy, so we have the constant issue of providing for ourselves beyond our working years.  Frankly, it is a lot of stress, and I find that in my case, at least, it provides quite a lot of motivation for hard work.  After all, I have no rich Uncle Sam to rely on to keep money coming in to pay for the groceries, much less fund an extended vacation called “retirement.” Ordinarily, in the rare case of a government agency reducing its workforce, attrition is relied upon.  Deaths and retirements (and hardly ever firing for cause) automatically reduce the number of working bodies in a large organization.  If you don’t bring in replacements, the workforce declines in number.)

— Congress Considering Change in Calculating retiree COLAs – Michael Wald  (DIERSEN: The purchasing power of my $50,856 Civil Service Retirement System pension and my $2,028 Social Security decreases dramatically each year as inflation is far greater than COLAs.)
http://www.fedsmith.com/2017/03/01/congress-considering-change-in-calculating-retiree-benefit-increases/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congressman John Garamendi (D-Modesto, CA) has introduced the CPI-E Act of 2017 (H.R. 1251). The bill would require the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) methodology to use CPI-E as opposed to the currently used CPI-W when calculating changes in retiree benefits for both Social Security recipients and annuities provided under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) and the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). “The fact that we do not do this already is shocking. Instead, cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs, for seniors collecting Social Security and those retired from the military or federal service, are based on the costs experienced by, quote: urban wage earners and clerical workers. They are not based on the costs that they – as elderly individuals – experience. And that doesn’t make a lot of sense,” stated Richard Thissen, president of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE). Retirees began receiving automatic annual COLAs in 1975. When Congress first approved automatic cost-of-living adjustments as part of the 1972 Social Security Amendments, the only Consumer Price Index available was the index now designated as CPI-W. Before that, benefits were increased only when Congress enacted special legislation.)

ILLINOIS TIMES
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: James Krohe Jr. argues that illegals are not more prone to commit crime. By coming to America illegally, you shout that you are more prone to commit crime.  The longer that you stay in America illegally, the louder that you shout that you are more prone to commit crime.  Overwhelmingly, illegals have financial problems.  The more financial problems that you have, the more likely that you will commit crime.  Illegals know that if they are about to be caught for committing a crime, they can always return to their motherland.

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Staying home from New Trier – Shia Kapos
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/kapos-making-political-oratory-great-again/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: New Trier High School’s seminar day examining civil rights has gone off without a hitch. No numbers yet on attendance, but the auditorium seating was nearly filled. At least one family, however, chose not to send their student to school. Robert Blackwell Jr., a Chicago entrepreneur and friend and supporter of President Barack Obama, says his daughter stayed home. While the school took some heat from conservative parents who thought the curriculum leaned too far left, Blackwell worried the content just wasn’t appropriate. He lives on the South Side and his daughter lives on the North Shore with her mom. Blackwell said negative images were being reinforced, and he pointed to a session called “Blackenomics 101,” based on a rap song that uses the N-word. “This session tells white teenagers that blacks need to express themselves through vulgarity and violence,” he said. Blackwell is chairman of EKI-Digital, which helps companies monetize technology investments, and he’a chairman of Killerspin table-tennis company. Keynote speakers were Colson Whitehead, who wrote “The Underground Railroad,” and Andrew Aydin, who with U.S. Rep. John Lewis, co-authored “March.”)

To postpone/avoid being gotten rid of by anti-Whites, more and more and more Whites are becoming anti-White. Should I write a book about the leading White anti-Whites in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, in Illinois, and in America?)

BLAZE
— Liberal Van Jones absolutely obliterates ‘ridiculous’ campus ‘safe spaces’ in fiery talk – Dave Urbanski (DIERSEN: How would you react if hate-filled liberals tried to establish “safe places” in your precinct, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, and in America to protect people from Trump supporters, Protestants, conservatives, Republicans, Americans, Whites, males, older people, rich people, gun owners, German Americans, draft avoiders, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time?  To establish a place to make people safe from a group is to demonize, to denigrate, and to condemn that group.)

— Here’s What Wrong With The Claim That Female Reporters Make 26% Less Than Male Counterparts – Andrew Follett  (DIERSEN: What percent of those organizations and companies that employ reporters are Democrat – 97%, 98%, 99+%)
http://dailycaller.com/2017/02/28/heres-what-wrong-with-the-claim-that-female-reporters-make-26-less-than-male-counterparts/
(FROM THEARTICLE: The study’s claim ignores much of its own data.  Its data clearly suggests the salary gap is because female journalists are, on average, six years younger than their male colleagues, and have 5.3 less years of work experience. They are also less likely to work full time and hold management positions. . .The study did find the average after-tax income of a male journalist in the country is $55,552, while the average female journalist earns $44,104. This statistic on its own can be misleading without the context of the work experience gap.)

How soon, if not already, will Duckworth blast Trump for avoiding the draft like I did?  To turn veterans against me, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always stressed to veterans that I avoided the draft.  To turn churchgoers against me, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always stressed to churchgoers that I am not a member of any church, that I do not attend church services, and that I do not give money to any church.)
