— Online’s ‘walled gardens’ must stop assuming real news is free – David Chavern
https://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20190206/onlines-walled-gardens-must-stop-assuming-real-news-is-free
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook and Google have been brutal to the news business. But this primarily reflects a failure of imagination. The tech giants are the world’s best distribution platforms and could be an answer for journalism instead of a grave threat. As readers have shifted to digital sources, the two companies have taken a large majority of online advertising revenue. More important, the platforms now act as “regulators” of the news business — determining what information gets delivered to whom, and when. With the flick of an algorithmic finger, those two companies decide what news you see and whether a publisher lives or dies. The impact on journalism has been clear. Just within the past week, we have seen over 1,000 planned layoffs at Gannett, BuzzFeed and HuffPost, and no one thinks we are anywhere near the end. Facebook and Google’s answer so far has been to pledge to spend $300 million each over the next three years to help journalism. But that money will be dribbled across a huge news landscape, and much of it will undoubtedly be used to encourage further use of Facebook and Google products. But such investments amount to charity, and charity will never be the answer. What news publishers really need are active partners who are willing to embrace the idea that quality journalism sustains our civic society and that the answer to bad information is more good information. We can start with the fact that “free” isn’t a good business model for quality journalism. Facebook and Google flatly refuse to pay for news even though they license many other types of content. Both companies have deals to pay music publishers when copyrighted songs play on their platforms. And the companies also aggressively bid to stream live sports and entertainment content to run on Facebook Watch and YouTube. These deals are varied and often secret, but none of them are based on “free.” Why are the platforms so unwilling to pay news publishers for access to the quality journalism that users need and value? There’s no reason those who produce the news shouldn’t enjoy the same intellectual property protections as songwriters and producers (regulators in Europe are looking at replicating some of these safeguards for journalism).)

— As Goes Journalism, So Goes the Community (DIERSEN: According to my critics/opponents, I am NOT a “credentialed journalist” a) because no one pays me for what I do as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor, b) because GOPUSA ILLINOIS email subscriptions are free and do not contain pictures, c) because www.gopillinois.com contains no advertising or pictures, d) because I do not have a degree in journalism, e) because I am conservative, f) because I am a Republican Precinct Committeeman, and g) because many activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who claim to be religious, conservative, and/or Republican treat me like I am not a “credentialed journalist.” In fact, the aforesaid viciously demonize me, viciously denigrate me, and viciously condemn me as being a fraud and even worse things. The aforesaid glorify and praise, pander to, and give scoops to the Democrat news media, and especially to Rich Miller. I should write a book about the aforesaid.)
http://www.nprillinois.org/post/attend-goes-journalism-so-goes-community#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The number of news reporters has been declining for years – in print and broadcast, and markets of all sizes. One need only look at the Illinois State House Press Corps, whose numbers have dwindled from several dozen full-time, year-round reporters to a handful of credentialed journalists today, or the decreased size of local media news staff, to see the trend in our area. What’s the impact on you – and the community? Research shows that fewer journalists mean less accountability of public officials. Add to that the current environment in which reporters do their work, which is more challenging than ever for a variety of reasons.)

I did not start earning $15/hour in today’s dollars until I was 18 in September of 1966. I earned far less than $15/hour in today’s dollars when I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; and cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966. If had earned $15/hour in today’s dollars 1962-1966, I probably would have bought a new loaded 1966 Pontiac GTO in 1966 instead of the new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint that I bought.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Attorneys for Covington junior Nick Sandmann made a splash this week when they sent letters to 54 news outlets, lawmakers, celebrities, media figures and Catholic institutions asking them to preserve information related to the episode and warning of a possible lawsuit. “There was a rush by the media to believe what it wanted to believe versus what actually happened,” attorney Todd McMurtry told The Cincinnati Enquirer. Libel and defamation cases are notoriously difficult to win, but Mr. McMurtry is working with famed attorney L. Lin Wood of Atlanta, who represented the family of 1996 murder victim JonBenet Ramsey as well as Richard Jewell, the falsely accused Olympic Park bomber. “I think the whole fighting-back part benefits Sandmann in some way, to restore his reputation in the court of public opinion as well as in the court of law,” said Clay Calvert, who teaches media law at the University of Florida.)

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/mitch-mcconnell-for-the-people-act_us_5c5a0c73e4b09293b209343c

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The country is in desperate need of more volunteer poll workers, who spend 14- to 15-hour days making sure people can exercise their right to vote. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is claiming Democrats’ effort to get more federal workers to help is actually a corrupt scheme to steal elections. The Democrats’ proposal is part of a major voting rights, campaign finance and ethics reform bill that McConnell has railed against for weeks. Along with making Election Day a federal holiday, the For The People Act would give federal workers up to six days off to train and work the polls for elections. “This is the Democrat plan to restore democracy?” McConnell asked. “A brand-new week of paid vacation for every federal employee who would like to hover around while you cast your ballot?” McConnell’s implication is clear: working the polls is an easy job that presents the opportunity for corrupt interference.)

— White people are experts at identity politics but complain when blacks, Latinos follow. Donald Trump has made Latinos his presidential piñata. Is it any surprise that they might stick together to fight back? – Ruben Navarrette Jr. (DIERSEN: Did your parents, your grandparents, your great grandparents, or any of the rest of your ancestors pick on the Irish, pick on the Italians, pick on the Blacks, and/or pick on the Latinos? My ancestors did not. The first of my ancestors immigrated in 1844 from what is now Germany. They all lived in northeast Illinois, they all were Missouri Synod Lutherans, and none of them ever made enough money to pick on anyone, even if they wanted to.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Third, pick up a history book. Identity politics is as old as America itself. It was there in the early 1900s when John F. Fitzgerald served as mayor of Boston, and in 1946 when “Honey Fitz” helped his grandson, John F. Kennedy, get elected to Congress — with the help of Irish-American voters. It was there in the 1930s when Fiorello H. La Guardia reigned as mayor of New York City with support from Italian-Americans. Picked-on minorities get angry, then active Notice a trend? Both the Irish and the Italians knew what it was like to be scapegoated and picked on? They got angry, then they got active. It’s the American way.)

— How much further? – Michael J. Bahr, Springfield
https://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20190204/letter-how-much-further
(FROM THE LETTER: How much further will Illinois go to become the “most progressive state” on abortion, as Gov. J.B. Pritzker has declared? The Illinois governor was certainly proud to take the lead as most progressive by funding abortions using taxpayer dollars. Yet Pritzker was quickly overshadowed by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who signed a bill allowing abortions up to nine months and removing other legal protections for the unborn. For this, Cuomo earned thunderous applause from the state’s legislative body, and even New York Cardinal Dolan is afraid to excommunicate Cuomo. Then Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam defended the killing of a child after the child was born that would have been allowed by a bill proposed in his state’s legislature, but then clarified his statement to indicate that he was talking about children who had been born with severe abnormalities or for reasons of the mother’s mental health in the 40th week, as if that makes it acceptable to kill any child that has been born. What will Gov. Pritzker do to maintain IL as the “most progressive state”? Infanticide up to 2 years old, for any reason? Abortion has always been about killing the infants. That should be obvious to all who have been watching these states try to “one-up” each other to become the most progressive. The good people of Illinois must stand up against this evil.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Big League Politics is a relatively new entry to the constellation of right-wing media outlets that sprung up during Donald Trump’s rise, and until the bombshell yearbook report, its readership had remained small. Patrick Howley, the editor in chief, said he received the photograph showing a pair of figures in blackface and Ku Klux Klan robes from a “concerned citizen,” declining to add more details. But one of Big League Politics’s owners, Noel Fritsch, described the source of the photograph as “some people who were classmates of Northam,” who brought it to light out of anger at the governor’s remarks early last week defending late-term abortions. In its mission statement, Big League Politics purports to be “not conservative” and “not liberal,” but it has trafficked in conspiracy theories favored by the far right, like the case of Seth Rich, the Democratic National Committee staff member whose murder in Washington was falsely seized on by conservative commentators as linked to WikiLeaks.)

— There was chatter at last week’s inauguration that Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s management and media style can be compared to another governor—Republican Jim Thompson. “Thompson would walk down in the press room and have a few beers with us and try to get to know us casually,” recalled Thom Serafin, a public affairs strategist who worked as a reporter back in the day. “He was good at dealing with people. A lot like Bill Clinton. He’d look you in the eye. You’d feel like he’s really interested in what you have to say. That’s a gift Jim Thompson had, and I see it in J.B.” Pritzker so far seems willing to keep an open line of communication with media. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s ready to have a beer with us. Big Jim Thompson, as he was known, attended Pritzker’s swearing in. He had a knack for giving people responsibility “and then letting them do their jobs,” said James Prescott, a public affairs consultant who worked for Thompson from 1981-88 as a press aide. He attended the inauguration gala and brought along a commemorative coin from Thompson’s 1977 inauguration—the first of four. – Shia Kapos (DIERSEN: I should write a book about the nastiest, rudest, and meanest politicians, their operatives, and their dupes in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois.)

Omitting your year of college graduation was a concern for Lizzie Rahm, HR Senior Manager and Recruiter, Clark Nuber PS who noted that employers may wonder if you had ever finished your degree if they saw no graduation date. Another worry is that a third of all job applicants lie about their education (see the Career Builder study), and when I mention this to Ms. Rahm, she quickly stated that her organization does a background check on every single person they make a job offer to. So if you are lying about the year you earned a degree to appear younger, it will come out. And if you claimed to have a degree that you don’t, that will be in the background report too. The result of lying to this employer is they will terminate your job offer. “There are so many background check companies out there now,” cautions Rahm “that many employers are doing thorough background checks on new hires, so job hunters definitely need to use integrity in creating their resume.”)

— State Sen. Oberweis giving “serious thought” to challenging US Rep. Underwood
https://capitolfax.com/2019/01/11/state-sen-oberweis-giving-serious-thought-to-challenging-us-rep-underwood/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republicans are lining up to challenge Underwood. Matt Quigley, a 32-year-old Navy veteran and Republican from Naperville, already has announced his intention to run in 2020. State Sen. Jim Oberweis, a Sugar Grove Republican who has run for Congress, Senate and governor before, also is considering a bid. He said, “We’re giving it serious thought, yes.” “I don’t believe that Underwood represents the views of the majority of the people in the 14th Congressional District,” said the dairy magnate, who said he would make a decision in 30 to 60 days. “I believe I would be much closer to those views.” Underwood beat a sitting Republican congressman by 5 points last November. She’s no slouch. And Oberweis will be a 74-year-old “career politician” (or, at least, “career candidate”) by 2020 with a whole lot of votes under his belt. Even so, Gov. Bruce Rauner won the 14th CD by almost 8 points. The only statewide Democrats who won it were Jesse White (+23) and Susana Mendoza (+2). Other possibles include state Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee), which could be why he’s been holding so many press conferences lately. Plenty of rumors about a few others.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/posteverything/wp/2019/01/11/feature/why-is-congress-so-dumb/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Our decay as an institution began in 1995, when conservatives, led by Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), carried out a full-scale war on government. Gingrich began by slashing the congressional workforce by one-third. He aimed particular ire at Congress’s brain, firing 1 of every 3 staffers at the Government Accountability Office, the Congressional Research Service and the Congressional Budget Office. He defunded the Office of Technology Assessment, a tech-focused think tank. Social scientists have called those moves Congress’s self-lobotomy, and the cuts remain largely unreversed.)

https://wealthyretirement.com/slap-in-the-face/drawbacks-financial-independence-retire-early-thinking/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What in the name of God are you supposed to do for the next 50 or 60 years if you retire in your 30s? I’m ahead of myself here, but this just sounds so incredibly immature and badly thought out that I kind of lost control for a second. Let’s skip over the fact that living a life of “carefree bliss” – that’s what one successful FIRE advocate called it – is absurd. I say that because every person I have ever known who left the real world too early – either because of an inheritance or because they built the resources on their own to allow them to do that – went back to work out of self-preservation or looked like hell a few years into their “bliss.” For the vast majority, it doesn’t work. People need a challenge. They need structure. They need a reason to get up in the morning other than kayaking and rock climbing.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In Saudi Arabia, the same campaign against dissent that led to Mr. Khashoggi’s murder left 16 journalists imprisoned in December, according to the CPJ account, including four women who reported on women’s rights. Egypt had the dishonorable distinction of imprisoning the most people — 19 — on charges of disseminating “false” or “fake” news. The growing number of journalists jailed or attacked on that pretext is one illustration of the deleterious influence that President Trump has had on press freedom globally. His labeling of the U.S. media as the “enemy of the people” and charges of “fake news” have been imitated by regimes around the world. At the same time, his refusal to hold Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman responsible for Mr. Khashoggi’s murder, despite a CIA finding that he likely ordered it, has, as CPJ put it, “signaled that countries that do enough business with the United States are free to murder journalists without consequence.” It won’t be a surprise if 2019 produces another large body count.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Richard Porter was the fourth person Gov. Bruce Rauner approached to run for governor. The Chicago attorney who also serves as an Illinois RNC National Committeeman told POLITICO it wasn’t so gauche as to be an outright ask. “I would have described it as more of an aside in a strategy conversation focused more on how he could win (rather) than an offer,” Porter said of their telephone call. Rauner also approached state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, Cubs owner Todd Ricketts and then-GOP attorney general candidate Erika Harold. Rauner “was in to win,” Porter said. “He was never a quitter. To the contrary. He was always focused on finding the best path to winning. And if that meant he should fall on his sword, then he was willing to do that — and give millions of his money away to boot. I think Rauner’s comments on this have been misunderstood.” Porter’s referring to political watchers who say Rauner’s courting of others was a desperate act by a candidate who thought he’d lose. But Porter says Rauner just wanted to be assured of a win. – Shia Kapos

— Short-term senator gets committee leadership pay – Bernard Schoenburg
https://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20181219/bernard-schoenburg-short-term-senator-gets-committee-leadership-pay
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Republican state senator appointed to the legislature to fill a 45-day gap is getting not only his base pay, but $1,270 extra to be minority spokesperson on a committee that hasn’t met since months before he took office and has no meetings planned. Sen. YADAV “NICK” NATHWANI of Glen Ellyn was sworn in Nov. 26 after being appointed to the vacancy left with the resignation of former Sen. CHRIS NYBO, R-Elmhurst, who lost the Nov. 6 election to Democrat SUZY GLOWIAK of Western Springs in the 24th Senate District. In addition to filling out Nybo’s term, Nathwani is listed as minority spokesman of the Senate’s financial institutions committee. That committee hasn’t met since May 23. Nathwani will be out of office when Glowiak is sworn in on Jan. 9. Base pay for legislators is $67,836 annually, and committee chairs and minority spokespeople get an extra $10,327 annually. For his 45 days, Nathwani will thus get about $8,360 in base pay and about $1,270 in pay for his committee position. I asked JASON GERWIG, spokesman for Senate GOP Leader BILL BRADY, R-Bloomington, if it was right for Brady to name Nathwani to the leadership post for such a short stint in the Senate and when the committee is apparently not meeting. “Unfortunately, we don’t control the scheduling process of when committees meet,” Gerwig responded. “Maybe if we get a fair map that’ll change someday.” Gerwig noted that Nathwani served the last three days of the veto session and will be there for session on Jan. 7 and 8, before the swearing in on Jan. 9 of the new General Assembly. A message left for at Nathwani’s Senate office went unanswered. He is chief financial officer of Professional Paving & Concrete Co. in Glen Ellyn, a Milton Township trustee and vice-chair of the Milton Township GOP. Nathwani came on my radar due to a something published on the Chicago Tribune website headlined: “From the community: New Senator seeks input from residents.” The author of the piece, which quotes Nathwani encouraging constituents to “reach out to me during this time to discuss the state and local issues important to them,” was listed only as “Community Contributor tbryers.” That would be TIM BRYERS of Elmhurst, who is on the Senate GOP communications staff. He said he is a community contributor to the Tribune, and said in this case, he posted a news release. He said other communications people, as well as representatives of local community groups, use that and similar sites to get out community information. The Trib website says that community contributors are registered users of TribLocal.com and Chicagotribune.com who have photos, articles, announcements and local events to share. The site is not for advertisers. Bryers also said that with many newspapers having fewer reporters than in the past, such openings for outside digital content allows information to get to the public. The Tribune used to have two reporters based in Springfield and there was one in recent years, but since MONIQUE GARCIA left in August to join a public affairs firm, nobody from the Trib is based in the capital city. MARISA KOLLIAS, spokeswoman for the Tribune, had no comment on the status of the Springfield opening, but did say the Tribune “is committed to state government coverage.” As to having a news release from a state staffer published on the Trib website as community news, Kollias had no comment.)

JOURNAL GAZETTE TIMES COURIER
— How to Properly Use Internships to Find Employees – Daniel B. Kline (DIERSEN: GAO audits IRS. When I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates did not want me to transfer, but failing that, they wanted me to transfer as a GS-4 Step 1 (currently $32,978/year) Intern, that is, to suffer a $58,902/year (64%) pay cut in today’s dollars. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran. They viciously demonized, denigrated, and condemned the fact a) that I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880/year, b) that much of what IRS Revenue Officers do is similar to what GAO Analysts do, c) that I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, d) that I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and e) that I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. They were furious that I transferred with me almost 12 years of federal seniority, 30 days of unused vacation days, and 130 unused sick days.)

AMERICAN GREATNESS
— Immigration Is Making U.S. Poorer and Dirtier – Pedro Gonzalez

Immigration Is Making U.S. Poorer and Dirtier

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As a matter of fact, immigration is making our country poorer—save for those who profit from cheap labor—for one simple reason: we are absorbing masses of poor people who remain concentrated in lower-skilled, low-paying jobs. Many of those poor, whether they arrive illegally or by chain migration, happen to be minorities, and in particular Latinos. Latinos experience the third-highest rate of poverty behind blacks and Native Americans—but as the second-largest ethnic group in the United States, they constitute a greater number of poor than blacks and Native Americans combined (10.8 million, 9 million, 700,000, respectively), according to the Center for American Progress. So, yes, immigration is bringing in disproportionate numbers of poor people and making America poorer.)

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/12/19/paul-ryan-immigration-rules-should-offer-jobs-to-anyone/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Retiring Paul Ryan today lamented his failure to deliver a global supply of migrant labor to businesses and investors — regardless of ordinary Americans’ desire for decent wages. Ryan’s failure was ensured by Donald Trump’s 2016 election — and so Trump’s “Hire American” policy is now allowing Americans’ wages to rise amid a shortage of blue-collar workers and protests by business leaders. Ryan’s lament came as his final efforts to outsource more Americans jobs to foreign workers were discarded in the confused negotiations over Congress’s failure to pass a 2019 budget for the Department of Homeland Security. That defeat for Ryan was missed by media coverage over funding for the border wall.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Indeed, when Trump won the presidential election, the hard-line Freedom Caucus stood at the ready to push Ryan out of office for jabbing Trump on the campaign trail. The only reason Trump kept him around was because Vice President Mike Pence and other pro-Ryan Republicans argued in favor of having a true legislative tactician and wonk shepherding his priorities through a convoluted Congress. Had Ryan forcefully criticized Trump during his presidency, the leader of the party might have come after him, Ryan’s allies say. “That’s the toughest job in American politics,” said former Rep. According to my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes, by the time I turned 19 years old in 1967, I had demonstrated nothing. They would stress that I had done yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; and delivered mail since 1966. They would stress that I had requested and obtained draft deferments. They would not stress that UIC had accepted me in 1966, that I had bought a new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint in 1966, or that I had bought a new 1968 Oldsmobile 442 in 1967.)

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-12-18/these-are-the-neighborhoods-attracting-america-s-richest

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cook County, Illinois Cook County, which includes the county seat of Chicago, is home to the No. 1 and No. 7 fastest-growing concentrations of $200,000-plus households. No. 1 is, ironically, the area around where the Cabrini-Green public housing projects once stood. Cabrini-Green was notorious for violent crime, poverty and de facto racial segregation until its demolition beginning in the 1990s at the behest of the Chicago Housing Authority. Even back then, authorities fretted that redevelopment plans might displace low-income families. They were right to be worried. Two decades later, the area’s concentration of $200,000-plus households has skyrocketed from zero to 39 percent. For some of the longtime residents who remain, the neighborhood’s transformation has been isolating. . .About 20 miles to the north, Cook County has another top 10 neighborhood: the Glen, in the suburb of Glenview. Converted from what used to be Naval Air Station Glenview, the planned community has hundreds of families living in condos, town houses and single-family homes that go for as much as $2.5 million each, according to realtor Margaret Ludemann.)

https://www.statesman.com/news/20181213/texas-marijuana-advocates-set-sights-on-2019-legislative-session
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The 2018 platform of the state’s Republican Party is among their evidence. It includes a plank calling for civil, instead of criminal, penalties for possessing small amounts of pot, as well as one calling for expansion of the Compassionate Use Act “to allow doctors to determine the appropriate use of cannabis to certified patients.” In addition, Gov. Greg Abbott for the first time recently voiced support for reducing penalties for some pot possession — albeit not all the way to a mere civil offense. Abbott, a Republican, said during his successful re-election campaign against Democrat Lupe Valdez that he’s open “to talking to the Legislature about … reducing the penalty for possession of 2 ounces or less from a Class B misdemeanor to a Class C misdemeanor” because he doesn’t want to see “jails stockpiled with people who have possession of a small amount of marijuana.”)

https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/success/jillonmoney/tca-wage-gap-even-worse-than-we-had-thought-20181211-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I know you probably want good news for the holiday season, but women workers — and the guys who root for them — it’s high time to argue for an end-of-year bonus or salary increase, because you are coming up short. According to a report from the Institute for Women’s Policy, the gender wage gap is even worse than previously thought. Unlike Census Bureau data that examines the current state of wage disparity in a given year, this report looked at a 15-year time period (from 2001 through 2015) to better gauge the gender wage gap that exists. The extended time period captures something called “work force attachment,” which takes into account when people leave the workforce voluntarily or involuntarily. (The study followed the same people over the time period.) While men were also penalized for time out of the workforce, women’s earnings losses for time out were almost always greater than men’s. With a longer lens, the gender wage gap balloons from the often-cited 20 percent to a jaw-dropping 51 percent. Did you catch that? Women made 49 cents for every dollar a man made.)

In 1974, my Democrat IRS superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious when I got promoted to a GS-12 (currently, $81,071/year) Revenue Officer position in the Loop and bought a studio condo in the Outer Drive East building so that I could walk to work and to graduate business classes at Loyola. In 1990, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious when I got to pick a better office in the new 200 West Adams building that GAO moved into because of the almost 12 years of federal seniority that I gained working for the Post Office 1966-1969 and for IRS 1971-1980.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sean Casten is finalizing the purchase of a studio condo. . .The two suburbanites also participated in a tradition: entering a lottery for dibs on the best offices on Capitol Hill. Casten drew No. 80, putting him among the last to pick. “If you want to come over in the fall and see the (metal) rebar change colors, there’s a great view,” he said of his utilitarian space in the Cannon House Office Building. Underwood did a little better. She selected 70 and is ensconced in the Longworth House Office Building.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Now there’s a new chapter in the race as Krupa is having to answer for abusive behavior spelled out in a court filing. In 2017, he was accused of abuse by his former high school girlfriend. An emergency order of protection was granted in June 2017 and extended for nine months after Juliet Schmidt filed her complaint, according to court documents sent to POLITICO. The filing in the Circuit Court of Cook County Domestic Violence division describes Krupa as a “controlling” boyfriend who “isolated” Schmidt from her friends, whom he referred to as “liberal faggots.” The document details incessant text messages and an incident in which he chased Schmidt in his car while she was walking. “It was emotionally abusive,” Schmidt told POLITICO in an interview Sunday. “It wasn’t healthy for me to continue the relationship. He had a lot of issues of control. I could see him taking advantage of that in political office.” In seeking the order of protection, Schmidt wrote, “I am afraid that David Krupa will continue to physically abuse me, harass me, interfere with my personal liberty and stalk me. Therefore, I fear for the safety of myself.” The order of protection ran nine months and ended when neither Schmidt nor Krupa could agree on a hearing date, Schmidt said. The judge didn’t rule on the case and Schmidt left Chicago to attend college out of state. Krupa has denied the allegations. In a TV interview and with POLITICO, he accused Schmidt of being manipulated by Madigan because she had interned for the Madigan-Quinn service offices in 2016. Schmidt says the summer office internship isn’t connected to her court filing. In an interesting twist, POLITICO has learned Krupa also worked for Madigan-Quinn at one point. “I picked up garbage at a public park” in the summer of 2015, he said. “It was for a month. It was a minimum wage job and I don’t care about it.” But he did try to get rehired in 2016. He didn’t get the job, he says, because Madigan took retribution for Krupa’s father saying he wouldn’t vote for the House speaker. Krupa sees it as another effort by Madigan to “strong-arm” voters. – Shia Kapos

— Attorney Gen. Lisa Madigan, who didn’t seek re-election, and U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, who lost his race, have been named fellows for the University of Chicago Institute of Politics for the upcoming winter quarter. U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, accused that chamber of being dysfunctional in her final Senate speech last week, also is part of the fellows group. Institute of Politics founder and director David Axelrod said fellows will interact with students looking to gain insight and experiences “at every level of government.” Two party leaders from other states as well as Chicago journalist Laura Washington also are among the group. – Shia Kapos

— Trump administration disputes falling federal employee engagement findings Criticism of leadership criticized – Joe Davidson (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997, virtually all my superiors and supervisors were Democrats. They did not want me to be “engaged,” they wanted to get rid of me. They wanted to give my job to a Democrat, to a minority, to a female, to someone younger than me, and/or to a veteran. They were furious when I did things that demonstrated my “engagement” including my earning a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/tips-on-deciding-which-tax-filing-status-is-best-for-you-11545015960
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Marriage bonus or penalty: Getting married this month, or postponing the official ceremony until next year, might have a surprising impact on your taxes in certain cases. For example, some two-income couples who get married this year and are in the top brackets may wind up owing more in combined federal income tax than they would if they had each remained single—commonly known as the marriage penalty tax. But in other cases, a married couple winds up paying less total tax than if each spouse had remained single. Lawmakers have taken steps to reduce or eliminate the marriage penalty in certain cases and to increase the amount of the bonus in many others. But these issues haven’t disappeared entirely.)

ABC7
— FULL COVERAGE: George HW Bush funeral plans, legacy and a look back at his life
https://abc7chicago.com/society/watch-george-hw-bush-funeral-plans-life-and-legacy/4808060/
— More than 50,000 hens killed in egg farm fire in Grant Park, Illinois (DIERSEN: I am related to the Mussmans. I visited this farm with my parents and brother many times during the 1950s and 1960s. For many years, the Mussmans and the Diersens got together once a month on a Saturday evening alternating between their homes. In the early 1950s, Ralph Mussman (https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2008-03-06-0803051510-story.html)  saved me from drowning when I fell off a pier at a lake in Wisconsin.   He  took me on my first plane ride; his daughter Sandy and I sat in the back seat of a rented Piper Cub. During the 1970s, his getting a major contract to supply McDonald’s with eggs for its new Egg McMuffin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMuffin) helped him to dramatically expand his egg business. I hunted pheasants on his farm a number of times. During the 1960s, my father worked for him part-time for a while delivering eggs to homes in Park Forest.  During the 1970s, a friend of mine who worked for the Secret Service rented a small plane in northwest Indiana and we landed on the air strip on this farm and visited with Ralph. Ralph owned a 1964 Oldsmobile Starfire that helped spark my interest in cars.)
https://abc7chicago.com/more-than-50000-hens-killed-in-egg-farm-fire/4829385/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m. at Mussman’s Back Acres at 9998 N 16000E Road in Grant Park, Ill. and the fire was raised to a fifth alarm before it was struck out, fire officials said. Chopper 7HD flew overhead as firefighters poured water onto the farm. The Grant Park Fire Department said five buildings at the plant were damaged, with two receiving heavy fire damage and the other three damaged by heavy smoke. The company said two of the two barns are a total loss. A spokesperson for the farm, Brian Birch, said the quick actions of the Grant Park Fire Department help to save at least 250,000 to 300,000 hens. No people were hurt. Michigan-based Konos purchased the farm in 2015. Mussman’s serves several Chicagoland retailers. Despite the fire, Birch says Konos will be able to fulfill all of its contracts. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters from a number of south suburban departments responded, including from Orland Park, Palos and Frankfort. Mussman’s Back Acres’ website says it is a family-owned farm and they also grow their own feed. The company said there should be no supply interruption.)

— Here’s how to pay your property taxes now (if you want) — 3 months early – Rachel Hinton
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/county-county-property-tax-treasurer-2019-pay-early/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The decision to post the bills now is in response to a large number of requests from taxpayers, accountants and tax advisors, the treasurer’s office said in a press release. This is the earliest that first installment payments have been accepted by the county. Treasurer Maria Pappas said making the tax bills available this far in advance makes the process easier and more transparent and gives taxpayers more time to get questions answered — particularly about the federal tax law that went into effect earlier this year. Before that law, all local income and property taxes were deductible from income taxes. Now, there is a $10,000 cap on deductions for state and local taxes. “If they want to pay now, they can, and if they want to go to an accountant to understand the new Trump law, they can,” Pappas said.)

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-berrios-family-new-jobs-20181204-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: t didn’t take long for former Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios’ sister and one of his close friends to land new government jobs, though they did have to take a major pay cut. Carmen Berrios and Victoria LaCalamita started work Monday with the Illinois secretary of state. That office is led by Jesse White, who cut a campaign radio ad for Berrios, the former chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party and an unabashed defender of old-school patronage politics. The secretary of state’s office, which has around 3,700 jobs, has long been known as a patronage haven under both Democrats and Republicans. The two women will each make $37,992 a year as public service supervisors in the Vehicle Services Department, said Dave Druker, White’s spokesman. Druker said the two were hired to fill open positions after going through an application process and were “graded based on experience and training.” Carmen Berrios and LaCalamita both resigned their executive jobs in the assessor’ office last weekend, before newly elected Assessor Fritz Kaegi took over Monday. Carmen Berrios was being paid $126,000 as deputy assessor in charge of tax services and outreach, and LaCalamita was being paid $139,000 as deputy assessor of financial operations.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A federal appeals court has tossed out parts of a law that would punish those who would knowingly encourage immigrants to come to, or remain, in the U.S. illegally. A three-judge panel of the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit concluded the federal law unconstitutionally bans a range of protected speech. The Justice Department prosecuted a San Jose woman who ran an immigration consulting firm, for allegedly helping arrange green cards for those working in the country illegally. The judges concluded the law’s reach was overbroad.)
