Out of the 20 county races this year, 11 will automatically go to the Republican candidate because no Democratic candidate filed. In comparison, two uncontested races will automatically go to the Democratic candidate due to no Republican candidates filing. Kent Redfield is an Emeritus Professor of Political Science at the University of Illinois Springfield. He says the lack of Democrats running in Sangamon County is partly due to the state party’s focus and support moving north to Cook County and Chicago. “To recruit candidates, you need organization, you need a certain amount of money,” Redfield said. “The Sangamon County Democrats are down, and it’s very hard to build back up.” Redfield also said Sangamon County was a competitive race in the past, but voting patterns outside the City of Springfield have trended more conservative for decades.
