Indeed, a 2014 poll of Harris, the same organization that conducted the later
poll for CareerBuilder, found that 46% of unretired U.S. adults say they “live
paycheck to paycheck and can’t afford to put money in savings.” A recent Urban
Institute report analyzed survey data from 2017 and found 32% of non-elderly
U.S. adults had experienced some form of financial distress in the previous 12
months. A survey included in the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s
2017 report on financial well-being asked respondents whether they “have
difficulty making ends meet” and found that 43% of U.S. adults said they had.
And a survey conducted for a similar 2017 report from the Federal Reserve found
that four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected $400 expense, would not be
able to cover it or would have to sell something or borrow in order to do so.
That fact has been cited — with varying degrees of accuracy — in several other
claims PolitiFact recently fact-checked. As described in the CareerBuilder
release, its survey sampled a subset of U.S. adults who are not yet retired.
Experts said that might help explain why the results seemed off from similar
polls that queried a broader range of respondents.)

FORBES
— Who Is Too Old To Be President? – Teresa Ghilarducci (DIERSEN: In America,
Democrats who have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial
clout determine which characterizes are desirable and which characteristics are
undesirable. How many undesirable characteristics are you burdened with? I am
burdened with the following: Trump supporter, Protestant (baptized, raised, and
confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran), conservative, patriotic, Republican,
American, White, male, old (born in 1948), non-poor, gun owner, 100% German
American, draft avoider, American-nameplate car owner, childless, pet-less, and
my ancestors have been in America since 1844. All my critics/opponents, all
their operatives, and all their dupes always promote age discrimination a)
because they want to get rid of those who are older than they are and/or b)
they want to curry favor with those who promote age discrimination.) https://www.forbes.com/sites/teresaghilarducci/2019/04/28/who-is-too-old-to-be-president/#11b9c39659ff (FROM THE ARTICLE: A
recent poll is bad news for Biden (76), Sanders (77), and even Trump (72) and
very bad news in progress towards stamping out age-bigotry. More voters in a
poll don’t want someone over 75 compared to other factors like being black, or
gay, or a woman…or even a Muslim. Being a “socialist” is the most
undesirable characteristic listed. The NBC/WSJ poll tested 11 different
presidential characteristics and there acceptability as a person who is
President. The most popular: An African American (a combined 87 percent of all
voters say they are “enthusiastic” or “comfortable” with that characteristic),
a white man (86 percent), a woman (84 percent), and someone who is gay or
lesbian (68 percent — up from 43 percent in 2006). The least popular: a Muslim
(49 percent are enthusiastic or comfortable–up from 32 percent in 2015),
someone over the age of 75 (37 percent) and a socialist (25 percent).”
Those polled may be overstating their tolerance for African Americans and
women, they don’t want to look bad to the pollster. But saying being over 75 is
an undesirable characteristic is not viewed as bigotry and an act of
discriminatory prejudgment is notable. As I wrote in March, why do many Americans
view prejudgment based on age legitimate? We don’t see widespread public
arguments that Kamala Harris and Cory Booker too black to run? And Elizabeth
Warren, Amy Klobuchar, and Kirsten Gillibrand too female to run? Every hire
(and an election is a hiring decision) is a judgement about the potential
productivity of a candidate. The relevant questions in every hire is whether a
candidate will be engaged and competent for the job at hand? Does the candidate
have the knowledge and talent to do the work? Age Discrimination is Harmful The
harm of age discrimination on the campaign trail is trivial to the widespread
pain and damage which lies beneath the ageism. Though illegal, age
discrimination in employment, pay, training and promotion, persists. Ageism makes
older workers struggle to get raises and jobs. A recent study indicates
employer bias against older workers and muddies the issue about whether someone
over 75 is too old to work. A majority of employers surveyed by Transamerica
Center for Retirement Studies answered that age 64 was too old to be considered
for employment (this was the median age given by employers, though most refused
to give an age – wisely, since it’s against the law to consider age in hiring
and promotion and pay). On the other hand, the median age that workers gave was
too old to work was 75. The workers’ answer still makes it complicated for the
candidates over age 75.)

than a generation of desultory control over illegal immigration is the
consequence of wink-and-nod implicit agreement between Republicans and
Democrats. Republican entrepreneurs/citizens have benefitted from cheap
crop-pickers and service workers. Democrats have viewed them as a prospective
reservoir of votes, once maneuvered into citizenship. There is a simple albeit
draconian answer: specific visas for specific periods (harvest seasons) and
specific jobs with no qualified U.S. applicants rigorously enforced by
mandatory ID/E-Verify registration. And instant deportation for all not meeting
these requirements. The rationale that our current low unemployment rate
justifies these illegals is risible: if you want workers for “dirty” jobs—pay
them more and they will emerge.)

DOVER, Del. – Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden received five
student draft deferments during the Vietnam War, the same number of deferments
received by Vice President Dick Cheney, and later was disqualified from service
because of asthma that he suffered as a teenager. Officials with Democratic
presidential nominee Barack Obama’s campaign released Biden’s Selective Service
records at the request of The Associated Press. Less detailed records were
available from a National Archives facility in Philadelphia. According to the
documents, Biden, 65, received several deferments while he was an undergraduate
at the University of Delaware and later as a law student at Syracuse
University. A month after a physical exam in April 1968, Biden received a
Selective Service classification of 1-Y, meaning he was available for service
only in the event of national emergency. “As a result of a physical exam
on April 5, 1968, Joe Biden was classified 1-Y and disqualified from service
because of asthma as a teenager,” said David Wade, a campaign spokesman.
In “Promises to Keep,” a memoir that was published last year, Biden
never mentions his asthma, recounting an active childhood, work as a lifeguard
and football exploits in high school. The Obama campaign pointed to media
interviews from 1987, when Biden was making his first bid for the presidency,
that mention his asthma. Military service and questions about which
presidential ticket would be stronger on national security are intertwined in
the presidential race. Republican John McCain, a former Navy pilot who spent 5
1/2 years in a Vietnamese prison, has argued that he has stronger background to
be commander in chief. Democratic nominee Obama counters that McCain would
continue a wrongheaded foreign policy from the Bush administration. Biden’s
five student deferments equal the number given to Cheney, who has been quoted
as saying he had “other priorities” than military service in the
1960s.)

discrimination is a major issue in American society. According to some reports,
a majority of people older than 50 will be involuntarily separated from their
jobs at least once. But when it comes to our presidential politics, it’s
another matter entirely. President Trump is turning 73 this spring. On the
other side of the aisle, the two leading contenders to challenge Trump are Sen.
Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), 77, and former vice president Joe Biden, 76. The two
share little in common politically, yet, amazingly, Biden is the top No. 2
choice of Sanders supporters, and those backing Biden return the favor. When
the issues of infirmities of age are even hinted at, voters across the board
seemingly dismiss them. In a recent focus group session of swing voters put
together by pollster Engagious, not a single participant said they would vote
against a candidate because the candidate was too elderly. Other candidates
such as South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg might claim that it’s time for a
“generational change” in our politics, but it appears few are heeding the
message. How could this be? How can a society that worships youth on the job
and in the culture turn into what Malcolm Harris, author of “Kids These Days,”
calls a political gerontocracy? Well, you can thank a confluence of factors,
ranging from the decades-long impact of the inordinately large baby-boomer
generation, combined with how the particular personalities of a number of older
candidates reflect what kind of older candidates we like — and which ones we
don’t.)

losing six House seats in the 2018 general election, the House Republican
Organization is reorganizing its leadership team and ramping up fundraising.
Political Director Joe Woodward, a confidante and friend to House GOP Leader Jim
Durkin, is out, according to a memo Durkin and new HRO Chair Tony McCombie sent
Saturday to caucus members and obtained by POLITICO. Woodward is moving to the
private sector, and HRO has hired Jayme Odom with the new title: executive
director. “We’re bringing in additional fundraisers and plan to be more
aggressive with members on their own fundraising with the organization,” Durkin
told POLITICO. The changes come after re-evaluating the 2018 losses. “When you
have a multi-billionaire writing checks, it’s difficult,” Durkin said,
referring, of course, to Gov. J.B. Pritzker‘s backing of so many Dem
candidates. “We have to be more self-sufficient.” GOP Rep. Mark Batinick (97th)
says the GOP caucus has done “much introspection” on its campaign strategy
leading up to 2020. “Only through a thorough self-examination can we fully
improve. Not only is it OK to question everything, it’s what any organization
should do from time to time,” he told POLITICO. Republican campaign coffers
remain a fraction of their Democratic counterparts. The HRO, which has a
fundraiser planned April 29, has $38,000 cash on hand, compared to the
Democratic Majority’s $3.4 million. Durkin, meanwhile, has $900,000 on hand
while House Speaker Mike Madigan sits on $7.4 million. Odom, HRO’s new
executive director, meanwhile, is a familiar player in Illinois politics. She
previously was chief of staff for the Illinois Lottery during Gov. Bruce
Rauner’s administration. During that time, a state investigation found Odom
failed to disclose her connection to lobbyists for a company vying for a
lucrative lottery contract. Odom then left for Ohio, where she helped manage
Jim Renacci’s unsuccessful U.S. Senate campaign last year. Odom also worked as
executive director for the Illinois Republican Party from 2013-2015. GOP drama
part 2: Some GOP lawmakers are criticizing that political operative David Walsh
was paid for consulting for Citizens for Durkin and for Majority Strategies — a
national firm that also does political mailings for the HRO. The payments to
Walsh by Majority Strategies were not publicly disclosed, according to a WCIA
report last week. Durkin says Walsh was paid out of his campaign fund — not by
HRO — and that Walsh’s work with Majority Strategies “is independent” of any
work with HRO. One downstate Republican, per an interview with POLITICO, is
hoping for an investigation to clear up the murkiness. And state Rep. Dave
McSweeney, also in an interview, accused Durkin of paying “his buddy” Walsh
instead of putting money toward House races. He even called on Durkin to step
down. GOP drama part 3: Yep, there’s a feud between McSweeney and Durkin that
goes beyond campaign cash. Last week, the House GOP leader pulled McSweeney’s
communications aide after McSweeney spoke out against Rep. Steve Reick for a
racially tinged comment about a bill requiring company boards to diversify.
Reick later apologized. McSweeney paid to promote a tweet condemning Reick’s
comment. In a statement to POLITICO, Durkin said: “This is an internal caucus
matter. I will continue working to move the Republican Party and House
Republican caucus forward in Illinois but will not tolerate public attacks on
fellow members.”)

many other pleasures, it may be bad for your health. It may even kill you. How
can that be? How can working longer be good for your health? After all, many
people dream of—and plan for—retiring early. Strenuous, stressful work can wear
people down and damage their health. On the other hand, retirees can relax and
reinvigorate themselves. They have time to follow their passions and pursue
activities that enrich their lives. But in our rush to leave the office, we
don’t realize that retirement also has a downside, especially over the long
term. Many retirees indulge in unhealthy behaviors. They become sedentary and
watch too much television. They eat too much. They drink too much. They smoke
too much. Without the purpose of fulfilling work, retirees can feel adrift and
become depressed. Without the camaraderie of their co-workers, retirees risk
becoming socially isolated. Without the intellectual stimulation that work can
provide, retirement can accelerate cognitive decline.)
