FEDERAL NEWS RADIO
— Poking the retiree beehive – Mike Causey  (DIERSEN: I am one of the 70,215 federal retirees in Illinois. Needless-to-say, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would be overjoyed if Trump would cut if not end my Civil Service Retirement System pension, my Social Security, and/or my COLAs.)
https://federalnewsradio.com/mike-causey-federal-report/2017/06/poking-the-retiree-beehive/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Currently there are 2,625, 261 federal retirees or their survivors.  Right now, as you read this, another 300,000 active duty federal workers are eligible to retire and will, sooner or later, do so.  That’s a lot of people. Go into any McDonald’s, from Scottsville, Ky., to Pismo Beach, Calif., at any time of the day and you will likely see a former fed, or six, chowing down and talking.  The same for your local grocery store whether it is in Washington, D.C., to Washington Court House, Pa.  Or on Guam or American Samoa.  Former feds, and their wallets, purses or credit cards, are just about everywhere. Years ago a very sophisticated federal retiree — my mother — who lived near Fort Myers, Fla., explained that lots of people continue to eat out after retirement “we just do it earlier.”  So we may not see them, but they are definitely there.  According to data from the Office of Personnel Management just over 17 percent of all federal retirees have monthly annuities of $4,000 or more.  Another 22 percent get between $3,000 and $2,999 while 14 percent get $1,000 to $1,999.  Fewer than 9 percent get $1,000 or less per month from their civil service retirement benefit.   Most of the current retirees are under the older CSRS system which fully indexes their annuities to inflation regardless of age.   Workers retiring under the FERS system get cost of living adjustments (starting at age 62) that are partially indexed to inflation.  At least since the Reagan administration. But life-after-retirement (for current feds too) could change drastically if Congress goes along with the Trump administration plan to charge current workers 6 percent more for their retirement benefits, to reduce COLAs for CSRS retirees by giving them 0.5 percent less than the actual increase in inflation each year, by eliminating COLAs completely for FERS retirees (9 out of every 10 current workers is under FERS and would become part of the Zero Diet COLA group), and to eliminate an annual “gap” payment that now goes to FERS retirees until they reach age 62 and become eligible for Social Security. Although they too retire under an enhanced version of the civil service retirement program, many politicians at the House, Senate and now White House level view federal workers either as clowns, drones or creatures from the swamp.  They lap up studies — usually from conservative think tanks —showing federal workers are overpaid and ignore those that show feds, particularly at higher grade and skill levels, are dramatically underpaid compared to their private sector counterparts in Washington, Houston, San Francisco and New York City. Reducing the buying power of federal workers (by making them pay more for their pensions) and retirees, by reducing or eliminating COLAs in the future, could hurt many communities that depend on the federal pay or pension dollar to stay afloat.  So how big a deal is the federal-postal retiree dollar.  Check out this chart from the OPM.  It shows the number of retirees (and their survivor annuitants in each state, and the value of their annuity payments.  The chart does not include the value of Thrift Savings Plan accounts the retirees have or any Social Security payments they received for covered work before or after they were in government:)

He never served in local government, on a library board or water commission, church council, or the PTA. There’s no evidence at all that Trump ever cared for anything other than Donald Trump. Unfortunately, the budget President Trump recently sent to Congress shows how much disdain he has for federal employees and the taxpayers they help and support every day. Civil servants perform countless tasks that assist, defend and protect Americans. GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— In 2018, which Republican candidates are going to run for federal, state, and county offices in DuPage County?  Who does Rauner want to run for Attorney General, Comptroller, Secretary of State, and Treasurer?  I urge all of them to have an entry in Wheaton’s 2017 Independence Day Parade. SEE:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2017-independence-day-celebration-parade-entry-tickets-31882733113  So far, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee and James Mendrick for DuPage County Sheriff have entries.  Since I moved to Wheaton in 1978, I have encouraged Republican candidates and elected officials to have entries in Wheaton’s Independence Day Parades.  This year, for the 12th year in a row, I will be seeking donations from Republicans so that “DuPage Republicans” can again be one of the two $2,500 “Star” sponsors and again sponsor the Wheaton high school bands and the Tunes of Glory Pipes and Drums parade entries.  According to the Wheaton Park District which organizes the July 3 fireworks and July 4 parade, being a $2,500 “Star” sponsor includes: “Media Print Advertisements, Social Media Promotion, Website Preference, Email Blasts, Event Posters/Flyers, Press Release, 10×10 Booth on July 3, Inclusion in Announcements on July 3, Premium Seating at Graf Park for July 3 Fireworks, Event Sponsor Banners,” and more.  Outstandingly, again this year Tim Whelan will coordinate Republican use of the 10×10 booth at the fireworks.  This year again, I will hand deliver flyers to the residences and businesses on the parade route that will list the Republican entries in the parade and the Republicans who helped sponsor entries. So far, outstandingly, Roger Claar has contributed $500, Chris Nybo has pledged $250, and Peter Breen, Grant Eckhoff, Amy Grant, Gwen Henry, Tim Whelan, and others have pledged $100.  Last year, outstandingly, Chris Nybo contributed $250; Liam Brennan, Dave Diersen, and Phil Suess contributed $150; and Bob Berlin, Peter Breen, Fred Bucholz, Mike Connelly, Tim Elliott, Amy Grant, Jeanne Ives, Rich Jorgensen, Chris Kachiroubas, Mark Kirk, Brian Krajewski, Robert Lyon, James Mendrick, Deanne Mazzochi, Peter Roskam, Darlene Ruscitti, Tim Whelan, and Jim Zay contributed $100. – Dave Diersen

http://herald-review.com/lifestyles/family/traditional-milestones-are-no-longer/article_ec26b99f-2e68-58ee-86e1-cd0b66b46b7a.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: This postponement of the age of marriage by young people compared to prior decades — partly spurred by improved educational and economic status in their 20s for women such as Jeffery — is just one of many long-term trends highlighted by national statistics in a recent U.S. Census Bureau report. The April report, “The Changing Economics and Demographics of Young Adulthood: 1975-2016,” puts numbers to some often-discussed aspects of today’s millennial generation — ones that may inspire either frustration, sympathy or nodding approval from their baby boomer parents, who themselves often broke with their parents’ traditions. Examining census and other survey data about the 18-to-34 age group, the report notes: — The percentage of women ages 20-24 who are married fell from 57 percent in 1976 to 17 percent in 2014, while those with a child fell from 31 percent to 25 percent. It is thus more common for a 25-year-old woman to be a mother than a wife. — About one of three 18-to-34-year-olds relies on parents’ financial help, and a similar proportion live in their parents’ homes. The percentage living independently fell from 51 percent in 2005 to 41 percent in 2015. — The economic situation of young men has plummeted, with 41 percent of those ages 25-34 earning less than $30,000 annually, compared to just 25 percent who were below that inflation-adjusted threshold in 1975. The status of women has spiked, meanwhile, as only 14 percent in that age group are homemakers now compared to 43 percent in 1975. Despite economic gains compared to young men, however, their earnings still trail those of males. — Sharing a home with an unmarried partner has been the fastest-growing living arrangement over the past four decades, used by 12 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds in 2016 compared to less than 1 percent in 1975. The age group’s most common living arrangement, however, is living with parents, which has overtaken living with a spouse. The report pointed out how today’s millennials generally fail to reach benchmarks of adult independence by an age that most of society considers ideal. A 2012 survey of the U.S. population, for instance, found 21 was deemed the ideal age of financial independence from parents, but only 29 percent of 21-year-olds currently achieve that. And 22 was the consensus as the ideal age of obtaining full-time employment, but only 37 percent have such jobs by that age. Similarly, wide gaps show up for getting married and becoming a parent. Putting together four yardsticks by which someone might fully embrace adulthood — a job, marriage, parenthood and living apart from parents — nearly half of 25-to-34-year-olds could claim all of those in 1975, but fewer than one-fourth could in 2016, according to the report.)

Members of the alt-left who have been tied to violent protests in the past picketed outside the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday in protest of Chairman Ajit Pai’s proposal to reverse net neutrality rules. The FCC will vote to undo the Obama era Title II rule that classified Internet service providers as utilities, subjecting them to more federal regulation. Protesters covering their faces held signs that read “Ban Drudge,” with a no symbol over the Drudge Report, the highly trafficked news website run by Matt Drudge. Other protesters held signs to ban other news websites, including Breitbart and InfoWars. Organizers of the campaign “Protect Our Internet” are connected to PopularResistance.org, which features several members of the antifascist (antifa) campaign. Protect Our Internet claims its mission is to “keep the internet vibrant, free and equal.” The campaign also claims net neutrality rules are “protecting our freedom to use the internet!” A report released this week found that net neutrality regulations lead to higher internet prices for consumers and less innovation.)

April 30 Evening Edition

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Before legalizing pot in Illinois, learn from other states – Editorial  (DIERSEN: To promote pot in Illinois is to promote the destruction of Illinois.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/opinion/before-legalizing-pot-in-illinois-learn-from-other-states/
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Sometimes, when a big new issue presents itself, such as a deadly disease epidemic, lawmakers must respond on the fly. They craft laws without knowing the full facts, taking a gamble on the unintended consequences. When it comes to legalizing recreational marijuana in Illinois, precisely the opposite is true. There is no compelling reason to rush a decision, and plenty of reasons not to. To be precise, there are nine excellent reasons not to — eight states plus the District of Columbia, where recreational pot already has been legalized. They offer Illinois a terrific opportunity to sit back, watch and learn. The benefits and dangers of legal pot will become more clear fairly quickly, at which time Illinois can proceed accordingly. In Illinois, two state legislators are proposing to legalize recreational marijuana for people 21 or older. Users would be limited to possessing about an ounce or less and could not drive under the influence of the drug. Lighting up in public would be banned. That sounds reasonable enough, and we certainly understand the attraction of more taxable revenue for our financially troubled state. But skeptics continue to warn of the dangers, such as the potential physiological effects and the questionable message sent to young people about the casual use of drugs. Far better, then, to take a breath. Let’s see how recreational marijuana plays out in, say, Colorado or California. We might also learn a few things from Canada, which is expected to legalize recreational pot soon. If access to recreational pot were a fundamental matter of civil rights, Illinois would be wrong to delay legalization any further. But it is not. The urgency does not rise to the level of, say, legalizing same-sex marriage or eliminating unconstitutional barriers to voting. Canada already has identified some concerns about recreational marijuana that Illinois would have to address. Testing equipment similar to breathalyzers must be developed for marijuana, to guard against increase in impaired drivers. The testing equipment also would have to be made available to many workplaces, such as factories, to safeguard against workplace accidents. Concerns remain whether young people would have easier access to a drug that some scientists warn inhibits brain development. Taking a wait-and-see approach also will allow lawmakers to see how the Trump administration’s plans to enforce federal laws against marijuana play out. The Obama administration’s policy was to avoid interfering with state legalization of non-medical marijuana use. States can’t count on that anymore. Conflicts between federal and state could create huge legal headaches. The strongest argument for legalizing recreational pot in Illinois right now is money. Last year, the state of Colorado pocketed nearly $200 million in tax revenue from recreational marijuana. State Sen. Heather Steans and state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, Chicago Democrats, who are pushing legalization in the General Assembly, expect Illinois would pull in between $350 million and $700 million a year. In one fell swoop, our state’s finances would be in much better shape. But then there is this, again giving us pause: The National Institute on Drug Abuse says marijuana impairs judgment, reaction time and motor coordination. If more motorists use marijuana, more people could die on our highways. A legitimate worry? Or anti-pot alarmism? We don’t know and don’t have to guess. The answer to that question — and many others — will be coming soon enough from those eight other states, the District of Columbia and Canada. Each is a laboratory studying the social and medical impact of recreational pot.)

— The bumpy road to adulthood for 20-somethings and 30-somethings – Robert Samuelson  (DIERSEN: When were you 18-34?  For me it was 1966-1982.  Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that if I was 34 today, I never would have been able to do the following before I was 34: a) become a licensed CPA, b) pass the Certified Internal Auditor Examination on my first attempt, c) pass the CPA examination on my first attempt, d) earn a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul, an MBA from Loyola, or a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU, e) get married, f) buy real estate, g) buy new cars, h) have jobs that paid me enough to do the aforesaid, i) etc.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-samuelson-millennials-jobs-adulthood-perspec-0427-jm-20170426-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Growing up isn’t what it used to be. There’s a yawning gap between the end of adolescence and the beginning of adulthood: a period when millions of 20-somethings and 30-somethings have many adult freedoms without all the responsibilities. Social scientists have tried — so far in vain — to name this new life-stage, but no one should question its significance. If you have doubts, a new U.S. Census Bureau study should resolve them. It compares the experiences of Americans 18 to 34 now with the same age group in the 1970s. There has been a sea change. “In prior generations, young adults were expected to have finished school, found a job, and set up their own household during their 20s — most often with their spouse and with a child soon to follow,” says the report. No more. . .The transition has been hard on some men. In 1975, only about a quarter of men 25 to 34 had incomes less than $30,000 a year. By 2016, that had risen to 41 percent. (Incomes were adjusted for inflation.) Meanwhile, millions of young women have entered the labor force, and though their median wage remains below men’s, it has increased faster than men’s.)

Carlson praised “No Campus For White Men: The Transformation of Higher Education Into Hateful Indoctrination,” saying, “Something’s wrong on college campuses. Most of us are dimly aware of that. In this bracing and sometimes horrifying book, Scott Greer pulls off the bandage to reveal the suppurating wound beneath. Higher education is rotting in this country. After reading Greer’s account, you’ll think twice before sending your children off to school.” “No Campus For White Men: The Transformation of Higher Education Into Hateful Indoctrination” promises to be the most talked about book of 2017, and today only you can get it for $4.95! White supremacy runs rampant in the Trump White House, cries the left. Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon is a white supremacist, according to Nancy Pelosi and many others. Bannon and Stephen Miller are closely associated with white nationalists, they say. And Trump supporters are “Nazis” who deserve to get beaten up.)

— Businesses urge DuPage County to lift video gambling ban – Robert Sanchez  (DIERSEN: At DuPage County’s April 11, 2017 board meeting, four spoke in favor keeping ban: Anita Bedell, Kathy Gilroy, Bill Bryan, and myself.  In addition, I urged the board to pass a resolution in opposition to legalizing the sale of marijuana in Illinois for recreational use – SB 316 and HB 2353.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170412/news/170419598/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Meanwhile, several gambling opponents attended Tuesday’s county board meeting to urge officials to leave the ban in place. “This board has no duty to level the playing field for bars,” said Kathy Gilroy, an anti-gambling advocate from Villa Park. “This board has a duty to the welfare of county residents — not just liquor licensees desiring to make money from customers who lose their money in a slot machine.” Counties and municipalities that allow video gambling receive 5 percent of each machine’s profit. The state takes 25 percent, while establishment owners and the terminal operators evenly split the rest. County board member Robert Larsen said he believes it would be difficult to repeal DuPage’s ban. “I understand some private entities like the VFWs would like to have the revenue,” Larsen said. “But where that money comes from tends to be from folks who can least afford it. I just don’t think it’s a good way to raise money for these organizations.”)
