Immigration, as described in the last installment, is one obvious answer, though, as that discussion made clear, a complex one. A partial answer might come from lengthening the working lives of the existing population and in persuading a greater proportion of the nation’s women to seek gainful employment. Keeping older workers on the job longer would help in two ways: first by increasing the number of people at work and second by reducing the size of the dependent retired population.
