BELLEVILLE NEWS DEMOCRAT
— OUTSTANDING: Activist voices opposition to legal Illinois marijuana sales – AP
https://www.bnd.com/news/state/illinois/article222349210.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: An opponent to legal marijuana in Illinois says it will allow white corporate exploitation of minority customers. Chicago activist the Rev. Gregory Seal Livingston on Wednesday called the effort to take over a lucrative illegal market “a gangsta move worthy of Al Capone.” He added “profit is the motive,” in legalizing the drug. Illinois has already decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Livingston was joined in voicing opposition to legal marijuana sales by members of Healthy and Productive Illinois. That is a group that opposes legalization and is supported by Smart Approaches to Marijuana, a national anti-cannabis organization. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation this summer that expands medical marijuana use to people prescribed opioids. The move increased the number of medical marijuana users by more than 46,000 patients. Democrat governor-elect J.B. Pritzker has said he hopes to legalize cannabis soon after he takes office.)

COOK COUNTY RECORD
— Federal appeals judges: ‘Politics in politics’ did not violate rights of GOP state senator Sam McCann who challenged Rauner – Scott Holland (DIERSEN: Politics is politics. To demonize me, to denigrate me, and to condemn me, my critics/opponents stress that those who dominate the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) a) have never asked me to serve as a chairman of a MTRCC committee, b) rudely fired me as MTRCC’s webmaster in 2010 and 2004, c) crushed me when I ran for the open MTRCC Treasurer position in 2004, and d) fail/refuse to promote my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails and my fundraising for Republican sponsorship of Wheaton’s Independence Day Parades. They further stress that I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc. They stress that virtually all MTRCC members side with them against me. Those who dominate the MTRCC a) reject planks in the Republican Party platform and/or the Illinois Republican Party platform and work against those like me who support those planks, b) reject the MTRCC resolution against video gambling and work against those like me who support that resolution, c) focus on destroying those like me who they cannot manipulate/dominate, d) were defendants in lawsuits that I have filed, and/or e) are operatives or dupes for the aforesaid. ILLINOIS POLICY INSTITUTE
— ILLINOIS PASSES STATE LAW GIVING PENSION BOOST TO ONE CHICAGO ALDERMAN – Vincent Caruso (DIERSEN: My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious that when I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, I brought with me almost 12 years of Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) credit – almost 9 years that worked for IRS 1971-1980 and almost 3 years that I worked for the Post Office 1966-1969. They were beyond furious that while I worked for the Post Office part-time, I earned full-time CSRS credit. The aforesaid made me eligible for GAO’s $25,000 buyout and early retirement offer in 1993 when I was 45 years old. Overwhelmingly, those who GAO hires have no job-related work experience, let alone experience working for other federal agencies. GAO audits IRS and the Post Office.)
https://www.illinoispolicy.org/illinois-passes-state-law-giving-pension-boost-to-one-chicago-alderman/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: State lawmakers overrode Gov. Rauner’s veto of a bill that allows one former firefighter serving as a Chicago alderman to credit his political salary toward a more lucrative fire pension. The pension boost will also apply to future aldermen with a history of fire department work.)

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/11/28/gops-h-2b-expansion-gives-business-unlimited-supply-of-foreign-workers/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican lawmakers are looking to slip the more than doubling of the H-2B visa program into a last-second spending bill that is expected to be passed before the new year. In total, there are roughly 1.5 million foreign workers in U.S. college-graduate jobs, plus at least 300,000 blue-collar or manual labor jobs. Meanwhile, there are five million Americans who are not in the labor force who want a job with more than 500,000 Americans saying they are discouraged by their job prospects. Every year, America’s working and middle class have their wages reduced by an inflow of more than 1.5 million mostly low-skilled foreign workers who are admitted to the country. This importation of illegal and legal foreign workers has left the country’s bottom line of workers with stagnant wages since the 1970s and forces them to compete with foreign workers for blue-collar jobs.)

— Required Minimum Distribution (RMD): An IRS rule that can aid your retirement income strategy – STEVE VERNON (DIERSEN: Every year, the purchasing power of my Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension and my Social Security (SS) drops. Next year, my RMD will help offset that. Why is your retirement income lower or will it be lower? For me, it is the success that my Democrat superiors in the federal government had in wasting my career and forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. Every year, as the purchasing power of my CSRS, SS, and RMD drops, the more angry that I am a) against my Democrat superiors and b) against those who side with my Democrat superiors.)

That’s a pity, says Dan Neil. because this year’s front-engine ZR1 is the most dynamic ’Vette yet – Dan Neil (DIERSEN: I own a 1972. Per Wikipedia “1972 was the last year for chrome bumpers at both front and rear, the vacuum actuated pop-up windshield wiper door, as well as the removable rear window common to all 1968-72 coupes. The key activated anti-theft alarm system became standard. The increasingly popular choice of an automatic transmission was installed in most Corvettes for the first time, with nearly 54 percent so equipped. This year SAE net measurement for horsepower was now utilized (away from the previous SAE gross standard), and was largely responsible for the much lower engine output figures such as the 200 hp (149 kW) rating on the standard 350 cu in (5.7 L) motor.”)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/2019-corvette-zr1-the-last-and-best-of-its-kind-1543428205
(FROM THE ARTICLE: MY BROTHER-IN-LAW recently acquired his dad’s well-preserved 1982 Chevrolet Corvette, which he drove to Thanksgiving dinner. It being a holiday, we even let him park it in the driveway. The ’82 Corvette—the last of the third-generation (C3) design—is perhaps the least-loved model-year of all, due to the fact that these wildly fast-looking cars were so shockingly slow and underpowered. Trapped inside that wasp-waisted fiberglass bod is a 5.7-liter V8 wheezing out a mere 200 hp due to its crude emissions-control plumbing. The 1982 Corvette is that zoologically unlikely thing, a sexy slug.)

— A job worth having? The fight to be governor was brutal — but to what end for the winner? – Editorial
http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/editorials/2018-11-23/editorial-job-worth-having.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois’ bond status already is barely above junk status. State officials report that meeting those obligations will consume 26 percent of revenues. Posen reports that J.P. Morgan Asset Management employed “a more realistic measure of their obligations” and bumped the state’s 26 percent number to 51 percent. Needless to say, devoting that huge percentage of revenues to state debt and retirement percentages will make it impossible to properly fund core state services. None of this is, of course, set in stone. But the public officials who’ve charted this current course of fiscal disaster are living in a world with make-believe budget numbers. Illinois must change. Will it? Can it? To this point, the answer is an emphatic no.)

Are we a ‘we,’ one people or several? If we are a ‘we,’ what distinguishes us from the ‘thems’ who are not us? …” Huntington wrote in 2004. “These questions remain for Americans in their post-September 11 era.”)

CANADA FREE PRESS
— When You Reward Something, the More You Get of it! – Chuck Lehmann
https://canadafreepress.com/article/when-you-reward-something-the-more-you-get-of-it
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Well, well, how true that statement is especially when it refers to our treatment of illegal aliens. When we give people who have “invaded” our country (even non-militarily) illegally, and we give them food, shelter, clothing, education, health care, sanctuary cities, and a drivers license, you know right away that our benevolence will attract others to do the same, it’s almost like a magnet. In other words, when you reward something the more you get of it. Common sense tells us that if we weren’t so generous to those people we call “illegal aliens” (according to liberals – they’re undocumented workers), the flow of these illegals into our country would drop to a trickle as there would be no incentive for them to not get the “goodies” that we now give them. Why is that so difficult for liberals to understand? Is there a political motive that influences their thought processes? Could it be that they expect these “future citizens” to be reliable Democrat voters? Sounds about right, doesn’t it? But, when you ask a liberal, if someone, he/she doesn’t know, walks through his/her front door uninvited and demands that you take care of them, would you let them stay or would you summon the police to have them removed? The overwhelming answer of these liberals would be “NO” they can’t stay, so why are they against a tightening up the border (with a fence that President Trump wants put in place) in order to prevent letting people into our country that have not been invited? You could deduce that liberals have a “double-standard” and their resistance to tightening up the border is a valid case in point. This column’s headline also applies to other situations affecting our country, like lowering the standards in our schools (the “dumbing” down of the curriculum) and not sufficiently punishing disruptive students, thereby preventing learning from taking place for the students who want to learn. Also, when people in government, in high elective or appointed offices, violate the rules of conduct and they get off with no or little punishment (a slap on the wrist), you’ll get more illegal behavior ( a play on our headline might go like this, “When you reward bad behavior, you get more of it”). The obvious case in point is the rules that Hillary Clinton violated while in office and still no punishment has been meted out because of a two-tier justice system, one for the well connected and one for the rest of us poor slobs. Now, we are faced with another problem that will affect society, and that is the major push by some influential people to legalize drugs. We’ve started with the legalization of marijuana in a few of the states of the union, with more to come on board in the near future. Again, you see that when you reward something, you get more of it. The adverse effects of the legalization of marijuana already has had a negative effect in the State of Colorado where traffic accidents and deaths have spiked up dramatically since legalization. Although marijuana is not a hard drug like cocaine and heroin, it is still a mind altering drug that does affect the person using it, and legalizing it has more people using it, not for medicinal use, but for recreational use. So, in conclusion, when you reward something, you get more of it, can be considered a sane conclusion in those areas mentioned above. It’s just common sense. So, be wary of those who want to do away with our tried and true rules of conduct that have been handed down through the ages, it might just be a change for the worst, not the better.)

https://abc7chicago.com/politics/trump-revels-in-victories-revokes-cnn-reporters-press-credentials/4640053/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Trump sparred with CNN Chief White House Correspondent Jim Acosta, who asked him questions about the migrant caravan headed for the U.S. and the Russia investigation. “That’s enough, put down the mic,” Trump said to Acosta, as he tried to ask more questions. Acosta struggled with a woman in a maroon dress tried to take the microphone from him. She eventually succeeded and handed it to another reporter. “CNN should be ashamed of itself, having you working for them. You are a rude, terrible person. You shouldn’t be working for CNN.” Acosta tweeted just before 8 p.m. Eastern Time that Secret Service denied him entry to the White House grounds for his live shot. Press Secretary Sarah Sanders released a statement accusing Acosta of physically assaulting a White House intern and saying his press credentials had been revoked until further notice. “President Trump believes in a free press and expects and welcomes tough questions of him and his Administration. We will, however, never tolerate a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern. This conduct is absolutely unacceptable,” Sanders wrote in the statement. The statement claimed, without evidence, that Trump has “given the press more access than any President in history,” and concluded, “As a result of today’s incident, the White House is suspending the hard pass of the reporter involved until further notice.”)

https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20181107/dont-write-illinois-gops-eulogy-just-yet-election-expert-says
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative Republican state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton, who narrowly lost to Gov. Bruce Rauner in the GOP gubernatorial primary, said state party leadership failed this election cycle. “The Illinois Republican Party needs new leadership at this point,” she said, suggesting Republicans from downstate or central Illinois could be up for the task. With Gov. Bruce Rauner out of the picture, so, too, is the money he sunk into GOP campaigns — and that’ll cause problems for Republican candidates, Redfield said. The GOP also will struggle until it finds its identity, Redfield said. The conservative wing led by Ives and activist Dan Proft has been targeting socially moderate Republicans to the detriment of the party, he said. “I suspect there’s going to be a real battle for control (of the state party),” Redfield said. “If they’re not sure who they are and they don’t replace Rauner’s money, they’re going to be in a world of hurt in two years, especially with (President) Trump at the head of the ticket.” Based on voter demographics, Republican political consultant Brad Goodman said, the party will become less and less relevant unless it can put up candidates young suburban women will support.)

— SALT Cap Comes Back to Haunt GOP With Key Tax Writers Losing Their Seats – Laura Davison
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-11-07/salt-cap-comes-back-to-haunt-as-key-gop-tax-writers-lose-bids
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Two of the key players behind the tax overhaul — Illinois’ Peter Roskam and Minnesota’s Erik Paulsen — were among the six casualties. They sit on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, whose Republican bench has been wiped out by losses, as well as retirements. Ten of the 24 Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee won’t return to Congress next year — in addition to Roskam and Paulsen, two members from low-tax states lost their re-election bids and six more decided to retire or run for other office. The loss of many of the committee’s top lawmakers means the GOP will need to rebuild members’ expertise in tax, trade and health-care issues. . .Roskam and Paulsen helped craft the 2017 bill and continued to support it even after a controversial provision was included to limit deductions to $10,000. Previously, they were unlimited. The lawmakers had hoped campaigning on the tax law’s other benefits, such as lower rates for individuals and more generous child tax credits, could offset voter frustration over the new cap. . .Roskam, who served as the House Ways and Means tax policy subcommittee chairman during the tax overhaul process, hails from a suburban Chicago district where the counties are some of the highest taxed in the state. About 49.3 percent of the tax returns filed in the district prior to the law change claimed the SALT deduction, according to data from the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. Roskam’s Democratic opponent, Sean Casten repeatedly campaigned on eliminating the SALT cap. “The fact that nearly half of his own constituents claim this deduction didn’t prevent Peter Roskam from making SALT a target,” Casten said in a white paper he published about tax policy. Over the course of the campaign, Roskam softened his support for the SALT cap, saying it should be indexed to inflation.)

Rauner was wrapping up a 9-day bus tour of the state with one last attempt to get his supporters to the polls. If we get the turnout, we’re going to win it,” predicted Rauner. He was joined by other Republicans including Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti. The two reminded voters that if Rauner loses the election Democrats will control the house and the governor’s mansion. “We have a governor that’s always stood up to Mike Madigan, and we have a governor who is going to stand up to the person that Mike Madigan appointed which is J.B. Pritzker,” said Sanguinetti. Rauner asked his supports to remind their neighbors to go the polls on Tuesday. He said voters have been telling him, “Stay strong, don’t back down don’t give in. — Rauner’s conservative predicament – TAHMAN BRADLEY
https://wgntv.com/2018/11/02/illinois-republicans-angry-with-rauner-say-theyll-still-vote-for-him/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: To win four years ago, Bruce Rauner campaigned as a fiscal conservative with no social agenda. He offered up a 44-point turnaround plan to shake up Springfield. Conservative and moderate Republicans loved it. But not long after Rauner took office, the right revolted. When it was time to seek reelection, he drew a primary challenge from State Rep. Jeanne Ives. “You know I started to lose hope that he was really going to be on the track fiscally as soon as he entered office,” Ives said. “And it had to do with him expanding massively pre-school in a state where we couldn’t afford it. We were going to try to grab on to $20 million per year on a federal grant. But we were going to have to phony up $400 million just to get that money.” It’s not just finances. Ives’ anger exploded when Rauner approved a law protecting undocumented immigrants and then later signed a measure expanding taxpayer-subsidized abortions. “I’m a social conservative and we’ve taken it on the chin, even under a Republican governor, we’ve not gotten what we wanted. The promises were not kept,” Ives said. Rauner defeated Ives by a razor thin margin, about 20,000 votes. After the primary, party leaders emphasized the need for unity. But Rauner and Ives did not do that. When asked if she did everything she could to help him win, Ives said: “That was never my job. I was very upfront with people.” Ives predicts Rauner will lose, but she says she will vote for him. . .McSweeney has been harsh critic of Governor Rauner, but he’s sticking with him in the race. “Our best hope is to reelect Rauner because he’s not going to opening promote tax increases. But I’d be a hypocrite if I said positive things about the first term. It’s been a fiasco across the board,” McSweeney said. Like Ives, the McSweeney fears Rauner could be doomed. But he sees a chance for the conservative movement to regroup. “If Bruce Rauner ends up losing we need to realize that we need to go back to our grassroots. We need to be inclusive. We need to be a positive party. We’ve got to stop calling people names and focus on an agenda that makes sense,” McSweeney said.)

She predicts that many late voters will choose to vote against the incumbent. “Since voters typically know the person currently in office, those who are still ambivalent at the end are likely showing a tendency to choose the new alternative.” Dr. Bryan McGraw voiced his view that the midterm election was still too close to call: “I honestly don’t know,” he said. “I suspect it will come down to a relatively small number of votes, maybe less than 500, and it’s impossible to tell at that small of a margin.” While McGraw still sees the race as too close to call, he agrees that this race marks a change in Wheaton’s congressional district. “Regardless of who wins, it’s clear that the district is trending more centrist, which will have a constraining effect on the representative. And which means we will probably see competitive elections here for the foreseeable future.” Some Wheaton students, like senior political science major Emma Wen, will be voting for the first time in this year’s midterm election. “I believe strongly in fulfilling one’s civic duty to vote — it is a privilege and right which should not be taken lightly,” she said. Wen Upcoming midterm election sparks conversation on campus expects this year’s election to have a significant impact on the country as a whole: “I think the ultimate outcome of these midterms will be the decisive approval or disapproval of President Trump and the Republican Party by voters.” No matter the outcome of the 2018 midterm election, politicians and political pundits seem certain that it will have major effects on the country’s policies.)
