DAILY CALLER
— JUDGE KAVANAUGH STILL HAS HIS SOCIAL CALENDAR FROM 1982 – Virginia Kruta (DIERSEN: What was on your social calendar when you were 17? My social calendar was virtually empty. I worked as a part-time dishwasher for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I bought a new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint with the money that I had earned and saved washing dishes. I graduated from Crete-Monee High School. I just barely made into the upper 20% of my class. My ACT score was only 24. Nevertheless, I got accepted by UIC. During the summer of 1966, I worked as a golf shoe cleaner for the Flossmoor Country Club, as a slag chipper for Thrall Car in Chicago Heights, and as a gasoline pumper for John’s Sinclair in South Chicago Heights. I lived with my parents and brother in Crete. I saved money for college expenses. My eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20. I had partial red/green color blindness. I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease).)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Students can be a harbinger for how the actual election might go. Becky Simon, president of the League of Women Voters of Naperville, said in past elections students have been accurate in picking the winners of the popular vote. Among the 14 percent of teens at the three local high schools who voted, Democrat J.B. Pritzker was favored by 62 percent of the nearly 1,200 teens who voted. Republican incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner came in second with 25 percent of the vote. In the 11th District Congressional race, incumbent Democrat Bill Foster led with 72 percent of the mock vote over Republican Nick Stella’s 28 percent. Democratic Secretary of State Jesse White, probably the most familiar candidate with teens because his name is on their driver’s licenses and driving permits, was the overwhelming vote-getter in all of the races, receiving 74 percent of the ballots cast. In the other races, the Democrats were on top with more than half of the teen vote.)

(ANTI-TRUMPS SAY: Illinois’s Sixth District The suburbs of Chicago were a base of the Republican Party before Mr. Trump. One need only visit a shopping mall in Burr Ridge or a youth baseball game in Barrington Hills to see throngs of the white, highly educated voters who are the electoral backbone of the area, and once voted solidly for presidential candidates like Mitt Romney. But if these voters have leaned right in the past, drawn to promises of lower taxes and smaller government, Mr. Trump has pitched many of them back in the other direction. In Illinois’s Sixth Congressional District, the president’s combustible persona and administration have put Republican candidates in dire peril. Jane Melvin, 55, said she has typically voted Republican in the past and still yearned for a version of the party that has been fading away. “If John Kasich was running in my district, I would vote for him,” said Ms. Melvin, referring to the right-of-center Ohio governor who routinely chides Mr. Trump. Ms. Melvin said she had long supported her congressman, Peter Roskam, but was reconsidering this year because Republicans had failed to check the president. “It’s a character question and a silence question,” she said. “Because they won’t stand up to Trump and say this is wrong.” Mr. Roskam, a former member of the House Republican leadership team, represents one of 21 seats where college-educated white suburbanites could upend the Republican majority in the House. Most of these seats, in relatively homogenous communities around cities like Minneapolis and Philadelphia, are seen as electoral toss-ups. In 2016, Mr. Roskam easily secured re-election by nearly 20 percentage points, but Mrs. Clinton carried the area in the presidential race by about seven points. A Times/Siena College poll found Mr. Roskam effectively tied with his Democratic challenger, Sean Casten, a clean-energy businessman. Mr. Casten has closed in on Mr. Roskam with help from voters like Karrie Sullivan, a former Roskam supporter who said she now favors divided government — both in Washington, where Republicans are in charge, and in Illinois, where Democrats may take full control of government in November. “It seems like the best situation is when neither party has complete control,” Ms. Sullivan said. Mr. Roskam, like other Republican candidates in similar wealthy suburbs, has tried to make the Republican tax overhaul an asset to his campaign. But many suburban voters have bristled at changes to federal deductions for state and local taxes. Highlighting the gulf between the Republican white-collar base and Mr. Trump’s hard-line following, candidates like Mr. Roskam have broken with Mr. Trump on critical issues like tariffs. Pursuing both wavering moderates and hard-core conservatives, Mr. Roskam said at a recent debate that he considered Mr. Trump’s performance “middling.” “Good on the economy, jumbling on other issues,” he said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Danny Davis, a Chicago Democrat, chastised Republicans for placing a $10,000 limit on how much in state and local taxes can be deducted on a federal filing. He and other Democrats tried to add language rolling back the cap to the follow-up legislation making last winter’s tax cuts permanent. Davis told the House Ways and Means Committee that the cap unfairly burdens Illinoisans and hurts business passthroughs. “The Republican-sought bill would increase taxes on almost 2 million Illinoisans by hundreds of millions of dollars,” he said. Committee Chairman Kevin Brady shot back at Democrats in his final remarks before calling the bill for a vote, saying the tax break subsidizes high-tax states. “This is a great amendment,” Brady said. “If you are wealthy or you are a governor or state legislator who loves to brutally tax families and businesses … these very states are seeing windfalls because the economy is booming and changes in the tax code are providing them new revenue. What we’ve seen is that these high tax states are pocketing that revenue.” The amendment failed, with Republicans Peter Roskam and Darin Lahood voting against it. According to the IRS, the average SALT deduction in Illinois was more than $12,000. The progressive Institute on Taxation and Public Policy said in a report that removing the cap on SALT deductions would simply be another tax cut for the rich, saying “repealing the SALT cap would cost $87 billion in tax year 2019 alone and 63 percent of the benefits would go to the richest 1 percent.” Others have criticized the state and local tax deduction as a subsidy and incentive to high-earners in high-tax states who arguably have the greatest ability to pay for it.)

https://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/09/20/project-veritas-gao-socialist-activism-destroy-capitalists/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the latest installment of Project Veritas’ undercover video series into the “Deep State,” a U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) employee purportedly admits to breaking agency rules and being a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). UPDATE: According to Project Veritas, GAO has issued a statement saying that this employee has been “removed from any ongoing GAO work.” The statement reads: “[W]e cannot comment on his personnel status due to privacy laws. But he has been removed from any ongoing GAO work and cut off from access to GAO equipment. We have a rigorous quality control process with many reviewers that prevents one person from biasing our final reports. But we will also examine his work product as part of our investigation.” Project Veritas identifies its latest subject as Natarajan Subramanian, a GAO administrator and “self-proclaimed Communist,” appearing to tell an undercover journalist that federal employees may calculatingly subvert President Donald Trump’s agenda by simply accomplishing tasks at a slower pace. “If you’re in [an] executive branch agency you can slow ball things to a degree, that it’s like ineffective, and maybe you get in trouble, or maybe you get fired or resign or whatever, but you slowed [Trump’s agenda] down for a certain period of time,” Subramanian says. In another exchange, Subramanian purportedly says he is not only a card-carrying member of the Metro DC DSA but also works secretly to expand the group’s online presence — while on the job as a federal employee. “Everything that I’m doing with DSA is stuff that I’m not supposed to be doing for work… it’s explicitly prohibited. If they find out I could get in trouble, basically,” Subramanian says during the tape. “No one knows I spent six hours yesterday doing social media for DSA.” According to Subramanian, other GAO staffers are aware he is a Metro DC DSA member, yet his superiors remain in the dark. “Management does not know. You have to be strategic about things like this,” he says. Subramanian purportedly admits he would be terminated if GAO officials were aware of his activism during work hours — yet breaks the rules anyways. “That’s when I might get fired. If there’s like a camera above my cubicle looking down so they can see and zoom in and see what’s on my phone,” he explains. “I would get fired if they knew that I was [engaging in DSA activity at work,] and I do. I do it on my phone.” In a separate exchange, the GAO staffer says one of his DSA cohorts assists the Pentagon with “war planning stuff” involving Syria and possesses Top Secret clearance. Subramanian says little oversight exists across the federal government. “There’s no one looking over my shoulder,” he says. “So like, a lot of times what I’ll do, and this is kind of what I’m doing right now, is like I’ll drink the night before, I tele-work and then I’m like, if I’m 15 minutes late to log on, no one checks.” In a statement released Thursday, Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe said of the investigative group’s latest sting: “For years the public has been at most only nebulously aware of the permanent administrative state. Only recently have we begun calling it the ‘deep state.’ And with this series, we’ve begun exposing who these individuals undermining our government really are.”)

WORLD NET DAILY
— COMMUNIST (GAO EMPLOYEE) BOASTS OF HINDERING PRESIDENT’S AGENDA ‘You can slow-ball things to a degree’ – BOB UNRUH (DIERSEN: One could say that GAO got rid of me so that it could hire employees like this.)
https://www.wnd.com/2018/09/communist-federal-worker-boasts-of-hindering-presidents-agenda/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A federal employee who describes himself as a communist boasts he can slow down President Trump’s agenda simply by deliberately delaying his assignments. “If you’re in [an] executive branch agency you can slow-ball things to a degree, that it’s like ineffective, and maybe you get in trouble, or maybe you get fired or resign or whatever, but you slowed [Trump’s agenda] down for a certain period of time,” he said. The comments by Natarajan Subramanian, a Government Accountability Office worker and “self-described communist,” were captured in an undercover video by James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas. It’s the third video in the series. In the second, two “Deep State” radicals confessed, “There’s a lot of talk about how we can like, resist from inside.” The first video in the series, released Tuesday, showed career civil servant Stuart Karaffa of the State Department boasting of working for the Democratic Socialists of America while he’s being paid by taxpayers. He explained his task is: “Resist everything. … Every level.” Since Trump’s election, there have been many references to the “Deep State,” the unelected, career bureaucrats using their tax-paid jobs to undermine the president’s agenda, including his efforts to “drain the swamp” and make government work better. Subramanian boasts of being a GAO auditor while working for the Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America. “Metro DC DSA is a socialist group that works to advance progressive issues in the Metropolitan DC area. Subramanian’s political activism may directly violate federal statutes as well as the ‘Yellow Book’ rules which apply specifically to government auditors,” Project Veritas explained. Subramanian said executive branch workers can deliberately stall the president’s agenda through their work or by doing less work. And he chooses to prioritize his politics over his job responsibilities. “Everything that I’m doing with DSA is stuff that I’m not supposed to be doing for work … it’s explicitly prohibited. If they find out I could get in trouble, basically,” he told the undercover journalists. In June, when his organization harassed Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen in public, he admitted “doing social media” for Metro DC DSA for most of the day. “No one knows I spent six hours yesterday doing social media for DSA,” he said. Subramanian said he conceals his actions from his supervisors, explaining one has to be “strategic.” BBut he believes he is safe. “There’s no one looking over my shoulder. So like, a lot of times what I’ll do, and this is kind of what I’m doing right now. I’ll drink the night before, I tele-work and then I’m like, if I’m 15 minutes late to log on, no one checks.” O’Keefe says the video series puts a face on the Deep State: “For years the public has been at most only nebulously aware of the permanent administrative state. Only recently have we begun calling it the ‘deep state.’ And with this series, we’ve begun exposing who these individuals undermining our government really are.” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has confirmed that the government is aware of the video series.)

  1. LOUIS TODAY
    — Amateur hour in Illinois – Kevin McDermott (DIERSEN: What experience do you have? How hard have your critics/opponents worked to marginalize your experience? My critics/opponents have always worked extremely hard to marginalize my experience. I worked for GAO for almost 18 years, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $96,403-$125,325. I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880. I am a Forensic Accountant, Certified Financial Services Auditor, Certified Government Financial Manager, Certified Fraud Examiner, licensed CPA, Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), and CPA. I passed the CIA and CPA examinations on my first attempt. I have master’s degrees in finance, accounting, and business.)
    https://www.stltoday.com/opinion/columnists/mcdermott-amateur-hour-in-illinois/article_cd4033ec-6c60-5f2c-b205-355ea0348fab.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I’m terrible with cars. I mean, can’t-so-much-as-change-a-spark-plug terrible. May I tune yours up for you? I’m bad in the kitchen, too. Eggs and toast are pretty much my whole repertoire, and I tend to burn the toast. Want me to cater your next event? You’d probably rather call a chef, or a mechanic. Expertise matters. Except when it comes to filling the top leadership posts in our democracy. Then, it seems, we’re ready to take a chance on those who have never led so much as a school board meeting. How often have you heard a candidate for governor, senator, even president boast that his or her complete lack of lower-rung political experience is a shimmering plus rather than a glaring minus? And how does that usually work out? Think about disgraced ex-Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens. Think about our current chaos president. Why do we imagine that high political leadership is the one job best left to the amateurs? Picture your dentist using that logic: I’ve never actually worked on teeth before. I’m proud to be an “outsider.” Open wide! That’s basically what’s unfolding right now in Illinois. For the second consecutive election, voters in the Land of Lincoln this November will choose a mega-wealthy governor who has never held any lower political office, and who only got to this one with a massive boost from his personal checkbook. We know this will be true regardless of the election result, because it’s a description that fits both of the major-party candidates. Sure, incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner can claim four years of on-the-job training, but given his performance during that time, it’s not much of a claim. He had never held any political office before buying into his first gubernatorial term in 2014 with $27.6 million from his own pocket. A venture capitalist, what he brought with him from that world were boardroom skills that you can’t say have been unproductive in office — because they’ve been counterproductive in office. As for Hyatt Hotels heir and Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker, it seems his primary qualification for governor, and the main reason his party handed him the nomination over more experienced Democrats, is the 10-figure fortune he was born into and his willingness to use it. Rauner is worth nine figures, and Democrats decided to fight fire with more fire. Business people with no political experience who run for high office invariably argue that their business skills are not just an adequate substitute for political skills, but are better. This has never made sense. The goals, rules and responsibilities of business are completely different from those of politics. Rauner’s first term has been a textbook illustration of those differences.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The views of rank-and-file Republicans, captured in voter surveys, are nothing less than galling. Let’s lead with a poll conducted by the global marketing firm Ipsos and reported by the Daily Beast. It found that 43 percent of self-identified Republicans said they believed “the president should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior.” When asked if President Trump should shut down The Post, CNN and the New York Times, 23 percent of Republicans said yes. These findings are obviously troubling to me as a member of the Fourth Estate. But in the Trump era, assaults on the media come with the territory. More disturbing to me as a citizen is that those Trump cultists would knowingly and willingly give him the power to trample on the First Amendment, destroying an essential part of our democracy that he doesn’t like. That is appalling. They either don’t know or care about what Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black wrote in New York Times Co. v. United States in 1971: The Founding Fathers intended that “the press was to serve the governed, not the governors.”)

DAILY HERALD
— Wheaton council members announce mayoral bids – Katlyn Smith
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180808/wheaton-council-members-announce-mayoral-bids
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wheaton voters will elect the city’s first new mayor in 12 years next spring, and two city council veterans already have announced bids for the post. Mayor Michael Gresk is stepping down after three terms, clearing the path for a new leader to take the city’s helm. John Prendiville and Phil Suess have emerged as the first two mayoral candidates seeking to succeed Gresk, who first was elected in 2007. Prendiville served on the council from 2007 to 2011 and again since 2013 after an unsuccessful run to unseat Gresk as mayor. His at-large seat on the council also is up for election in April 2019. Suess ran unopposed last year to retain his seat representing the North District. His fourth term on the council doesn’t expire until 2021. Councilwoman Suzanne Fitch said Wednesday she intends to seek re-election to the other at-large seat. Candidates will begin filing their nominating petitions for the city’s municipal offices in November. Prendiville is the managing director and senior managing counsel for The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation, a firm that acts as a trustee for municipal bond issues. If elected, he said his background will serve him in helping to keep the city on “very good financial footing” since Wheaton weathered the economic recession. “The type of work I’ve done in the legal world is not adversarial. I’ve always been part of transactions where people are working together toward a common goal,” he said. That consensus-building work will translate to leading city council meetings that, under Gresk, are orderly and on track, Prendiville said. “I want to be a leader of this intelligent and dedicated group,” Prendiville said of his council colleagues. In his last mayoral run as Gresk’s challenger, Prendiville said he visited “at least 80 percent of homes” of municipal election voters. But he said Gresk “deservedly” had “a tremendous amount of support.” Gresk captured 57 percent of the vote. “I wasn’t running against him. I was just running because I was a little bit ambitious there,” Prendiville said. Suess is a partner in an investment consulting firm. He said his 14-year tenure on the council makes him the best candidate for the office. “I just think it’s the consistency of positions over time,” said Suess, who has lived in Wheaton for 30 years. “I’ve been a very strong advocate of living with the money we have.” He’s also sat on the DuPage Water Commission board for the past eight years. Wheaton is the second-largest customer of the agency that supplies Lake Michigan water to most of the towns in DuPage County. “I joined that commission in August of 2010 when they were basically in the depth of their problems with respect to their debt and have been part of the team that has turned around the water commission since January of 2011,” Suess said. Fitch said she’s running for a second term to continue addressing flooding and economic development issues as the council’s liaison to the Downtown Wheaton Association, a group of shops and restaurants. An attorney, Fitch highlighted her push for a new program to install sidewalks in neighborhoods for kids to walk safely to and from school. She also was a vocal supporter of lowering the speed limit on residential streets from 30 mph to 25 mph. The new limit went into effect Aug. 1. “I’ve been responsive to resident concerns, and I’ve really taken the time to engage the residents to address their issues,” Fitch said. Filing paperwork is expected to become available through the city clerk’s office later this month.)
