WGN TV
— Trump’s presence could be felt in suburban election – TAHMAN BRADLEY  (DIERSEN: Do you live in one of the 11 counties in Illinois that voted for Clinton?  If you are a Trump supporter, what adverse actions have the anti-Trumps taken against you? What adverse actions are they taking against you?  What adverse actions have they threatened to take against you?)
http://wgntv.com/2017/03/31/trumps-pressence-could-be-felt-in-suburban-election/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Next Tuesday, suburban voters head to the polls. In Bolingbrook, a small municipal contest could be early test of how President Donald Trump will impact local elections. For 31 years, Roger Claar has served as Bolingbrook mayor.  He’s on the ballot again Tuesday. But he’s facing a serious challenge from Jacqueline Traynere. Claar hosted for Trump last fall.   The big money event was held at the village-owned Bolingbrook Golf Club, or as some residents call it, “Rog Mahal.” “You’re bringing in somebody who talks negatively about the minorities in our community, who disrespects the message on the Statue of Liberty, who just spews hate,” Traynere said. Bolingbrook voted overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton and Traynere is pounding Claar for backing Trump. Today, Claar hit back. “She’s an opportunist. She’s running because of the Trump fundraiser,” he said. “I doubt she would have run otherwise.  I’ve had many people tell me, ‘I was disappointed, but I’ve forgiven you.’” The race has also turned personal. Traynere claims the mayor was unprofessional and rude to her when raised questions about violence against women. “I do believe that we have a domestic violence issue that’s pretty high profile in our community,” she said. “He requested the meeting to tell me to sit down and shut up. This is the kind of mayor that we have in this community. If he doesn’t like what you have to say he tells you to sit down and shut up. He’s a bully.” The mayor told WGN News he doesn’t recall the conversation. “I don’t bully. I’m a bully for Bolingbrook. I stand up for Bolingbrook,” he said. Traynere has also made Bolingbrook’s debt an issue in the campaign. “Two years ago, we only owed $180 million. As of June of last year, we owed $316 million,” she said. Mayor Claar admits the village is adding debt, but he says it’s being used for crucial infrastructure investments. He says Traynere  may serve on the Will County Board, but she has no municipal experience. “She’s saying nothing about what she’s going to do except for saying hate me and called me a bully. Now, is that a good platform? I guess we’ll see Tuesday.” Mayor Claar says he does not regret the Trump fundraiser.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/31/business/media/april-ryan-white-house-spicer-trump.html
(FROM THE ARTICE: By the time April D. Ryan left the White House briefing room on Tuesday, she was already making headlines: on live television, President Trump’s press secretary, Sean M. Spicer, had cut off her questions to chastise her for what he deemed an inappropriate shake of her head. In Ms. Ryan’s basement office in the West Wing, the phone started to ring. Her fans, it seemed, were having none of it. “I was appalled at the way Sean Spicer was treating you with such disrespect,” said a pained-sounding woman named Pam, who said she had listened to Ms. Ryan, the White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, for years. “I have people come at me in all sorts of ways,” Ms. Ryan told Pam, nodding. “I thank you so much.” Hanging up, Ms. Ryan, whose workspace is about the size of a telephone booth, checked her Twitter account. After Mr. Spicer’s harangue, she had tweeted a single word — “Lawd!!!!” — which was rapidly going viral. (By week’s end, it would be retweeted more than 6,000 times.) Somebody had replied with a video of Melissa McCarthy imitating Mr. Spicer on “Saturday Night Live” by shoving a lectern at a reporter. Ms. Ryan howled with delight. “I love Melissa McCarthy!” she said. One of the few black journalists in the White House press corps, Ms. Ryan has covered presidents and clashed with press secretaries for 20 years. But her encounters with the Trump administration are propelling the 49-year-old, Baltimore-bred journalist to a new level of prominence — and into a contentious debate over this White House’s attitudes toward gender and race. First there was Mr. Trump’s bizarre request, at a February news conference, that Ms. Ryan arrange a meeting between him and the Congressional Black Caucus. “Are they friends of yours?” the president asked, apparently oblivious to the racial undertones of posing such a query to a black journalist. Then came Tuesday, when Mr. Spicer laced into Ms. Ryan after she asked how the administration planned to revamp its image in light of reports about suspicious ties with Russia. “It seems like you’re hellbent on trying to make sure that whatever image you want to tell about this White House stays,” Mr. Spicer shot back from the lectern, after accusing Ms. Ryan of harboring an “agenda.” When Ms. Ryan tried to clarify, he interrupted. “You’re asking me a question and I’m going to answer it,” he said, adding in a tone: “I’m sorry, please stop shaking your head again.” Mr. Spicer is belligerent on the best of days. But his tone toward Ms. Ryan struck some viewers — including Hillary Clinton — as pointed and condescending, particularly because it was directed toward a black woman. “April Ryan, a respected journalist with unrivaled integrity, was doing her job just this afternoon in the White House press room, when she was patronized and cut off trying to ask a question,” Mrs. Clinton told a women’s group in California. (Mrs. Clinton, who has sat for interviews with Ms. Ryan, saw the exchange on Twitter that day and added the line to her speech.) The hashtag #BlackWomenatWork trended on Twitter, linking Ms. Ryan with Representative Maxine Waters of California, whose hairstyle was mocked by the Fox News host Bill O’Reilly (he later apologized). Whoopi Goldberg expressed her disgust on “The View.” John Dingell, the former Democratic representative from Michigan, wrote on Twitter: “If the WH doesn’t want talented journalists like @AprilDRyan to shake their heads, perhaps they should stop acting like some damn children.” For Ms. Ryan, the attention is energizing, and a bit unsettling. She posted supportive comments from fans and celebrities on her Twitter feed, but also some of the racist replies that she says are a byproduct of her job. When a Florida radio host requested a photo with her at the White House — “I just love the way you don’t take no for an answer” — Ms. Ryan politely declined. “It’s going to look like I’m gloating,” she said. “Look, I’m a black woman in a white male dominated town,” Ms. Ryan said later, when asked if she felt treated differently. But she said her primary goal was to remain focused on her work. “I like Sean Spicer,” Ms. Ryan said. “I don’t want this to hurt him.” She paused. “I don’t want it to hurt me, either.”)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/opinion/my-familys-history-tells-the-story-of-the-great-american-divide/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some 15 million people in the U.S. receive disability payments. In some of the 136 counties with the highest rates of disability use across the country, almost all of them rural with a white majority, more than 1 in 6 working-age adults receive federal disability payments. Once on disability, as the Washington Post points out, recipients rarely get off the program. By and large, these are not individuals who fell off a roof and broke their back or lost limbs in an industrial accident. They suffer from back pain or diabetes or emphysema or liver cirrhosis or some other lifestyle-induced ailment. But, perhaps more importantly, they live in communities where job opportunities are few, especially for those who don’t have a college education. But disability programs are just a fraction of the government’s assistance programs. A 2015 study by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that 52.2 million people, or roughly 1 in 5 Americans, received help in 2012 from one of six means-tested programs. And, of course, this doesn’t count Social Security or Medicare, which pays out to individuals on average far more over their lifetimes than they contributed in taxes.)

DAILY HERALD
— 3 things you need to know if your basement is flooded  (DIERSEN: What factors increase the likelihood of your basement flooding? Factors for 915 Cove Court in Wheaton include the subdivision being built in a watershed area and a former septic field, the tremendous amount of surface and subsurface storm water that flows onto the lot during and after heavy rains, the inadequate number of storm sewer inlets in the subdivision, the disruption, obstruction, and improper connection of 6″ and 4″ subterranean drainage lines when the home was built, the pouring the foundation walls on cracked footings, the improper installation and intentional blockage of exterior foundation footing tiles, the installation of only one sump pump when there should have been two or even three or even four, the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, and the fact that all the storm water that gets into the storm sewer system on the lot is limited to the capacity of one 4″ pipe.  What factors decrease the likelihood of your basement flooding?  For 915 Cove Court, they include the installation of steel reinforcement rods in foundation walls, the installation of interior footing tiles, my paying $900 when the home was built in 1984 to have all nine of the home’s downspouts directly connected to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my installing a backup sump pump, my unobstructed and properly connecting the aforesaid subterranean drainage lines to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my paying for unobstruction (the removal of stones) from some of the exterior footing tiles, my adding hundreds of feet of French drains and many storm sewer inlets on the lot and connecting them directly to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my properly sealing the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, my paying for conversion to an overhead sewer system before the basement was finished in 2005, and my paying for a 20-W whole house natural gas backup electric generator for the home.  Since 1984, because of Wheaton’s failure/refusal to assure that building codes were enforced when the subdivision was constructed and 915 Cove Court was built, I have been forced to spend many thousands of dollars and many hundreds of hours of my labor to stop basement flooding.)

http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/31/politics/donald-trump-getting-even-washington/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Long before Donald Trump ever became a credible presidential candidate, let alone the commander in chief, the former reality TV star was guided by one animating principle: “If they screw you, screw them back 10 times as hard.” Trump’s desire for revenge played out in public on Thursday when, in an effort to spook conservative members of his own party, the President lumped the Freedom Caucus — a collection of conservative Republican lawmakers — with Democrats and pledged to “fight them” in 2018. Trump and his White House feel betrayed by the conservative Republicans. Many backed Trump early in the 2016 campaign and stood by him during some of the toughest trials of the campaign. But when it came to passing his first conservator legislative goal — health care reform — the conservatives revolted en masse and killed the bill.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170327/BLOGS02/170329877/despite-poll-no-vote-now-on-legal-pot
(FROM THE ARTCLE: Steans was reacting to a survey by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois that found a stunning two-thirds of voters saying they support the legalization of pot “if taxed and regulated like alcohol.” . . . Support for full legalization was wide across the state and among political subdivisions. While such backing was strongest among Democrats, young people and Chicagoans, the plan gets support from 52 percent of Republicans surveyed, 54 percent of downstaters and 51 percent of those aged 66 and up, the institute said. Just 31 percent of voters overall indicated they oppose or strongly oppose such an action.)

— The Left’s Descent into Fascism – Shari Goodman  (DIERSEN: If you are a Trump supporter, where are you no longer welcome?  What year is it in America – 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936?)
http://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2017/03/the_lefts_descent_into_fascism.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Long before the creation of ghettos and concentration camps, the demonization of Jews began in 1933 when Germany elected Adolf Hitler as Chancellor.  Following his election, Hitler created a fascist dictatorship which eventually led to the Holocaust and the extermination of six million Jews whose only crime was their Jewish identity. The dehumanization of Jews was a necessary requirement for Hitler and his fellow Nazis and they did so with a campaign of demonization, ridicule, and blame.  Hitler’s election provided Germans a daily dose of anti-Semitism and gave it legitimacy while providing a rationalization for the extermination of six million Jews. The persecution of European Jewry was gradual.  At first Jews were no longer welcome at schools and universities.  Later, they were no longer able to own their businesses and homes. With time, public transportation was unavailable to them, public restrooms were forbidden, hospitals excluded them and eventually they were no longer able to use public streets or go outdoors.  They were complete outcasts in a land they called home.  By the time the crematoriums were running, Jews were no longer viewed as humans, but as vermin to be stamped out for the good of humanity. Today, the election of Donald Trump to the Presidency has provoked the fascist Left to reject the election results.  Taking a page from Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radials, in which Alinsky advised his followers in Rule 13 to “pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it,” the Left is now resorting to the fascist tactics of targeting Conservatives much like the Nazis who targeted European Jewry for their economic and social ills.  Conservatives and Trump supporters are reluctant to identify themselves and conceal their support for fear of a backlash from the Leftist elites. From the Berkeley riots to Black Lives Matters marches it is not safe to be a conservative Trump supporter on American streets and college campuses.)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— Mere Budgetary Christianity  What would Jesus say about big government? – JAMES FREEMAN  (DIERSEN: What do you say to religious leaders who ever increasingly hint/imply/argue/shout that God hates those who are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time?  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes in Wheaton and in Glen Ellyn are extremely judgmental and hint/imply/argue/shout that God loves them but God hates me and God is going to send me straight to Hell mainly because I spend Sunday mornings putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out instead of attending church services.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/mere-budgetary-christianity-1489780327
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times is having fun implying that Speaker of the House Paul Ryan’s effort to replace ObamaCare is at odds with Mr. Ryan’s Catholic faith. The column is of a piece with the “Jesus was a socialist” arguments that bounce around the left half of the social media universe. Without wrestling with any difficult questions of faith or logic, Mr. Kristof simply casts the federal bureaucracy in the role of Jesus. Then the Timesman proceeds to suggest through satire that by seeking to reduce outlays and improve incentives in federal programs, Mr. Ryan is defying the will of his God. Of course if federal agencies were ever actually given the statutory mission to do as Jesus would do, Mr. Kristof would be as horrified as anyone. But this seems to be a political season when people who spend much of the year driving religion out of public life abruptly drag it back in as they attempt to justify big government. It’s not necessarily persuasive. The ancient book has numerous admonitions to perform charity and various condemnations of greed, but it’s not easy to find a passage in which Jesus says that government is the best vehicle to provide aid, or that anyone should force others to donate. Even casual readers of the Bible may notice that Jesus doesn’t get along all that well with the political authorities of his time and (spoiler alert!) his relationship with government ends rather badly. Back then, tax collectors were not presumed to be the dedicated public servants that we appreciate so much today. And in our own time, social conservatives who think the U.S. Government has become hostile to religion—Christianity in particular—should consider what Jesus had to put up with.)
— Thomas Sowell discusses his own rise from poverty and the country’s ‘degeneration’ into ‘grievance culture.’ – TUNKU VARADARAJAN  (DIERSEN: When my subordinates in the federal government who were Democrat, minority, female, and/or younger grieved that they were not getting promoted fast enough, my Democrat superiors and supervisors hinted/implied/argued/shouted that they were doing everything that they could to get rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.  During almost all of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO 1980-1997, the agency was under a promotion freeze.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Two choices for Trump supporters in Chicago: Be silent or be bullied – SUZZANNE MONK  (DIERSEN: How nasty are the anti-Trumps in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, and in your county?  One would expect that the fewer votes that Trump got in the aforesaid jurisdictions, the nastier that the anti-Trumps would be there. One would expect that the more religious, government, political, and/or financial clout that anti-Trumps have in the aforesaid jurisdictions, the nastier that the anti-Trumps would be there.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170317/ISSUE07/170319882/two-choices-for-trump-supporters-in-chicago-be-silent-or-be-bullied
(FROM THE LETTER: For 24 years, I have loved living in Chicago with my husband, a native Chicagoan. I have loved doing business in Chicago. The food, the sports, the culture and the arts, and the diversity of people have been a fertile ground for our life, and I have been proud to call myself a Chicagoan anywhere I went in the world. But for the last year I have not loved living in Chicago. I am ashamed of you, Chicago, and the intolerance you now accept in the name of politics. You see, I am a Trump supporter. My husband is a Trump supporter, too. And because we support Trump, we no longer feel proud, or safe, being in this city. Chicago, you have always been a Democrat-run town, but this year you have become a one-party city terrorizing anyone not in your party for their beliefs. From the constant protests blocking roads and businesses, to the attacks on Trump supporters, to the verbal and online bullying going on every day across this city, Chicago, you have made it quite clear that Trump supporters are not welcome. When my fellow Chicagoans praised the riot at UIC that shut down the Chicago Trump rally I attended, I was angry and ashamed. You have made it quite clear, there are two choices for Trump supporters in Chicago: Be silent about your politics or be bullied for them. Since I am not one to be silent, I have been bullied. My husband and our music store, Worlds of Music Chicago, are still being bullied. Our store has had to cut employee hours due to the bullying, and soon we will have to cut our employee altogether. We will close at the end of April, because we are no longer willing to subject our staff, our customers, our neighbors and ourselves to the daily risk. Sadly, my story is not unique. Other Chicago Trump supporters are experiencing the same hate, bullying and intimidation. If you need any further evidence of Trump supporters being unwelcome, you need merely turn on the local news, pick up a local paper or read your alderman’s latest newsletter bashing and misrepresenting our president. So, after 25 years, after a lifetime for my husband, we have to leave. In the end, it wasn’t the high taxes, constant road construction or high crime. It wasn’t the unchecked gang violence or political cronyism. In the end, we have to leave because of the hate you are willing to tolerate. I’d like to say, it’s not you, it’s me—but Chicago, I’ve got to be honest . . . it’s you. You’ve changed. You are no longer the nose-to-the-grindstone hardworking Democratic City of the Big Shoulders. You have a Trump-sized chip on that big shoulder, and it has turned you into a city of fear, hate and division. A city that encourages political bullying. A city I can no longer call home.)

https://www.bna.com/legal-status-dreamers-n57982085106/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A group of 10 House Republicans introduced legislation (H.R.1468) that would provide legal status to young, undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, known as “dreamers.” The move signals a growing consensus among lawmakers on both sides of the aisle that this population should get special treatment, even as the administration continues to crack down on illegal immigration generally. President Donald Trump also has commented that he plans to “work out something” for the group. He hasn’t yet touched former President Barack Obama’s program protecting dreamers, despite promising on the campaign trail to terminate it. “These are America’s children, and that is why I’m proud to lead this group of representatives from all over the country to introduce legislation to simply recognize them as such and provide them an earned path to legal status,” Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.), the bill’s main sponsor, said in a statement.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— BILL THAT COULD AFFECT GUN OWNERS’ DUE PROCESS TO BE HEARD IN SPRINGFIELD  (DIERSEN: Do you own a firearm?  I have owned firearms ever since I was in high school in the 1960s.  Who has “it in for you” in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois?  How much religious, government, political, and/or financial clout do they have to disarm you, that is, to take your FOID card and your firearms away from you?)
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/03/bill-that-could-affect-gun-owners-due-process-to-be-heard-in-springfield.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  “Imagine if a family member or a police officer had it in for you. In the blink of an eye, you could be stripped of your rights without any due process, simply because someone accused you of something with absolutely no evidence to validate the claim…” That’s a scenario a bill scheduled to be heard next week in Illinois’ Senate Judiciary Committee would set up, Sons of Liberty Media is reporting. “Illinois State Senator Julie Morrison (D-29) has proposed a bill that would allow the government to confiscate firearms from gun owners without any due process,” the website says.  The proposal is SB 1291. While the Illinois State Rifle Association doesn’t sound an alert about SB 1291 on their website, the National Rifle Association called on Illinois members to contact their state lawmakers about the bill before the hearing was postponed to heard March 14th.  “SB 1291 would allow an individual’s family members or law enforcement to petition the court for an ex parte restraining order if they consider the individual to be a danger to themselves or others simply because the individual owns, possesses or purchases a firearm,” the NRA’s website explains. “According to the summary of the bill, an ex parte order would be issued by a judge based solely on a brief, unsubstantiated affidavit made by a petitioner and absent any input made by the individual on which the order is targeted.” If enacted, the NRA says, this SB 1291 would require the surrender of FOID cards, concealed carry licenses as well as the seizure of all firearms by law enforcement. “This legislation is ripe for abuse by individuals that disagree with the Second Amendment, and the mere insinuation that gun ownership makes you a danger to yourself or others is offensive and insulting,” the NRA says.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Did the 2011 White House correspondents’ dinner spur Trump to run for president? – Amy B Wang  (DIERSEN: Democrats are disciples of Saul Alinsky.  Alinsky’s fifth rule encourages the use of ridicule.  I should write a book about those in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who use ridicule.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-white-house-correspondents-dinner-trump-20170226-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If several media and political pundits are to be believed, President Donald Trump sits in the White House today as the result of several hours one warm April evening nearly six years ago: the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. That year, at the invitation of none other than The Washington Post, Trump — then best known for “Celebrity Apprentice” – attended the event, an annual gathering of journalists that typically has been headlined by the sitting president. Or, as The Post’s Roxanne Roberts once described it, a dinner “devolved from a little-known media evening into a black-tie mash-up of the Super Bowl, the Oscars and Davos, Washington-style.” Trump was no ordinary celebrity guest in 2011, however. In addition to being a reality TV fixture, he was one of the most vocal opponents of President Barack Obama, leading the “birther” movement that had demanded Obama release his birth certificate. Trump had also been hinting, not for the first time, that he might launch his own bid for the presidency. All of those things coalesced to make Trump the target of a large swath of jokes at the 2011 correspondents’ dinner. First came Obama, who roasted Trump for a full five minutes that evening, seeming to delight in directing zingers at the man who had questioned whether he was a legitimate president. (Unbeknown to the world then, the president was also, at the same time, authorizing the raid that would kill Osama bin Laden.) “No one is happier, no one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than the Donald,” Obama said. “That’s because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter, like: Did we fake the moon landing? What really happened in Roswell? And where are Biggie and Tupac?” Obama also joked about Trump’s experience to lead the nation. “All kidding aside, obviously, we all know about your credentials and breadth of experience,” he said. “For example, no, seriously, just recently in an episode of ‘Celebrity Apprentice,’ at the steakhouse, the men’s cooking team did not impress the judges from Omaha Steaks. And there was a lot of blame to go around, but you, Mr. Trump, recognized that the real problem was a lack of leadership and so, ultimately, you didn’t blame Little John or Meatloaf — you fired Gary Busey. And these are the kinds of decisions that would keep me up at night. Well-handled, sir. Well-handled.” But it was comedian Seth Meyers, the host of that year’s dinner, who really laid into Trump. For several minutes, Meyers lobbed one joke after another at Trump’s expense, even wedging in a prescient imitation of Trump hosting a White House news conference: “Gary Busey said recently that Donald Trump would make an excellent president. Of course, he said the same thing about an old, rusty birdcage he found.” “Donald Trump has been saying that he will run for president as a Republican – which is surprising, since I just assumed that he was running as a joke.” “Donald Trump owns the Miss USA pageant, which is great for Republicans because it will streamline their search for a vice president.” Video from the dinner would later show Trump seemingly frozen in the audience, lips pursed, staring straight ahead with his face set into something between a squint and a hard scowl, as Meyers continued. Several publications have since seized upon the 2011 dinner as the moment in which Trump’s political ambitions crystallized. “That evening of public abasement, rather than sending Mr. Trump away, accelerated his ferocious efforts to gain stature within the political world,” the New York Times wrote last March. “And it captured the degree to which Mr. Trump’s campaign is driven by a deep yearning sometimes obscured by his bluster and bragging: a desire to be taken seriously.”)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— More taxes? Really? – PAUL FICHTNER, Member, DuPage County Board
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170224/ISSUE07/170229911
(FROM THE LETTER: I read with interest a recent opinion piece (“Here’s a way to stop Illinois’ shame spiral,” Feb. 15) by Michael Belsky that calls for a “tax revision commission.” I suspect his main goal is to call for a tax on services when he says, “Today only 17 percent comes from the sale of goods and 71 percent is derived from services. The service economy is benefiting from the state and not sharing in the cost. This is wrong.” In 1965, there was no state income tax. Today it is 3.75 percent, soon to go higher. Sales taxes that were 4 percent in 1965 are now over 10 percent in Chicago. These large increases in taxation rates over the years have made up for any “lack of service tax revenue” and were probably designed with the fact that services are not taxed. Last year, 37,508 people moved out of Illinois, and companies have made decisions not to locate here. Residents are leaving because of high tax rates that have also caused businesses to not move or expand. An additional service tax will hurt the very service industry that he shows is such an important part of our economy. It is very disappointing to hear the drumbeat of more revenue as the “only way” to recover from bad fiscal management. The crisis I see is the lack of urgency in addressing ideas to reduce expenses, smart consolidation of governments and exploring privatization of some government functions. Pushing aside my 10.75 percent sales-taxed breakfast in Chicago this fine morning, I call for the creation of an Expense/Efficiency Revision Commission, on par with any Tax Revision Commission.)

They ignored/belittled my GS-12 IRS Special Procedures Staff position description that I worked under 1976-1980.  They ignored/belittled the GS-12 IRS Revenue Officer position description that I worked under 1974-1976. — Who’s watching the watcher? How local governments fall prey to big thefts – Editorial  (DIERSEN: What qualifications do those who are paid to watch units of government in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois have? GAO audits federal agencies. I worked for GAO for almost 18 years, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels (currently $94,610-$122,991). For almost 9 of those years, I worked on audits of federal financial industry regulators; for almost 6 years, on audits of many other federal agencies; and for 3 years, on audits of IRS.  I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173. I served on the Executive Committee of the Chicago Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants for 13 years.  I passed the CPA examination and the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt.  I am a licensed CPA, Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified Government Financial Manager, Certified Financial Services Auditor, and Forensic Accountant. I have masters degrees in business, accounting, and financial markets and trading. Because I have so many qualifications, those in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who do not want me to expose their wrongdoing focus on demonizing me, denigrating me, and condemning me.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-madigan-essex-kankakee-public-corruption-edit-0225-jm-20170224-story.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Governments are required to hire auditors, but many audits essentially rely on records provided by the officials being audited. Audits often are cursory and nonprobing. In the Dixon case, the city’s outside auditors and bankers settled with the city for nearly $40 million — a rare admission of accountability failure. Burnham officials sued their auditors for not catching the theft. The list of embezzlement cases involving public officials is long, but nearly every case involves three culprits: Too little oversight. Too concentrated control. Too much trust. If you’re an elected official (you too, school board members) or government worker who deals with taxpayer-funded accounts, be vigilant — and not only of your own conduct. Ask the questions: Who has access to the accounts and who oversees that person? How many signatures are required on transactions? How probing are the audits we’re paying for? That is: Who’s watching the watcher?)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Billionaire pols could use a little farm team training – Editorial  (DIERSEN: What do you know about the federal government? GAO audits federal agencies.  I worked for GAO for almost 18 years, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels (currently $94,610-$122,991). For almost 9 of those years, I worked on audits of federal financial industry regulators; for almost 6 years, on audits of many other federal agencies; and for 3 years, on audits of IRS.  I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173. I served on the Executive Committee of the Chicago Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants for 13 years.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/opinion/editorial-billionaire-pols-could-use-a-little-farm-team-training/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In politics, there used to be farm teams.  If you planned to run for governor some day, you might start out by running for the Chicago City Council. You could learn to hit a curve ball before moving up. But now very wealthy men — they all seem to be men — with no previous experience in elective office are pushing right to the top. People like Bruce Rauner, Donald Trump, Chris Kennedy and J.B. Pritzker, self-funded and self-impressed, are running for governor or senator or president or whatever and often winning. Because money often wins. But because they have never played even a summer or two of Triple-A ball, hacking away on a local school board or village board, they are prone to the kind of mental errors that could have been avoided with a little seasoning. We’re thinking here, first of all, of major league wannabee J.B. Pritzker, the Chicago billionaire who’s contemplating a run for governor. On Thursday morning, Pritzker woke up and could not resist an overwhelming desire to tweet out: “As a protest against Trump’s rescinding protections for trans kids, everyone should use the other gender’s bathroom today!” This did not go over well. Conservatives, choosing to take his suggestion literally, warned they would beat up any man who tried to enter a woman’s bathroom. And liberals said Pritzker entirely missed the point. As state Rep. Will Guzzardi tweeted in response, “No disrespect” but “we just want to let kids use their own gender’s bathroom.” Pritzker later clarified that he was just being flip to make a point. But a more experienced politician would have known that flip doesn’t play with the public. And you have to learn when not to swing. Maybe Pritzker will learn. They often do. Will Kennedy still run into elevators when reporters ask him annoying questions? Time will tell. But Rauner doesn’t talk as much anymore like an arrogant CEO. And who knows, if Trump strikes out enough, maybe even he will learn. Well, no, we don’t actually believe that. Our best scouts say Trump is not coachable.)

The ID cards feature fingerprints, retinal-imaging and 27 digital locks to prevent identification theft, according to Marco Peral, of the consulate offices. Ron Noriega said the unit provides services to all who come. “They’re Mexicans, regardless of their status,” she said. “We don’t ask, there’s no reason to ask. We’re only providing a service.” The mobile unit’s services expanded this year, to include health screenings and legal advice on immigration, labor and other administrative issues. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Immigration  Trump argued in 2013 that the Republican Party would continue to lose elections if GOP lawmakers granted citizenship to illegal immigrants, comparing reform efforts that included amnesty to a “suicide mission.”  “The fact is 11 million people will be voting Democratic. You can be out front. You can be the spearhead. You can do whatever you want to do, but every one of those 11 million people will be voting Democratic,” Trump said, adding, “It is just the way it works.”  In 2015, Trump again made immigration a major emphasis in his speech. “It’s a massive problem we have to stop illegal immigration,” Trump explained. “It’s disgusting what is happening to our country, we are a dumping ground for the rest of the world.”  Trump also highlighted the immediate need for a border wall. “We need a wall. If I run, I will tell you, the king of building buildings, the king of building walls,” Trump said, “Nobody can build ’em like Trump. That I can promise you. I can promise you that.”)
