I did not take and pass the CPA examination on my first attempt until 1979. I did not earn a master’s degree in accounting until 1980. If I had not taken their “offer” in 1997, I would not have been eligible for regular retirement until I was 55 in 2003. They had made it very clear that they would have made those 6 years a living hell for me.
