(FROM THE ARTICLE: Three years ago, Chicago spent nearly $2 million — and $1.7 million more in legal fees — to compensate dozens of women denied firefighter jobs because of a discriminatory test of upper body strength that City Hall has now scrapped. Now, a dozen women who wanted desperately to become paramedics are accusing the Chicago Fire Department of devising two new physical agility tests that are equally biased against women. One test requires candidates to go up six flights of stairs with a 250-pound dummy within eight minutes. The other requires candidates to step onto and off of an 18-inch-high box to the beat of a metronome for two minutes without missing a beat while holding 25-pound weights in each hand. The lawsuit filed Friday in federal court alleges that the two tests were “invented to eliminate women” in a Chicago Fire Department where “discrimination against women is stubborn and purposeful.” The women are seeking back pay and other measures to compensate for the discrimination they have suffered. Shannon Markey said no amount of compensation could make her whole for the dream shattered by the city’s decision to fire her on the day before she was scheduled to graduate from the fire academy.)

Republican Linda Pasetti-Olson of Montgomery or Democrat Barbara Hernandez will fill a spot occupied by Maria Vazquez, who did not seek re-election. She served the remaining term of her late husband, Jesse. Neither candidate has held elected political office, other than precinct committeeman. Pasetti-Olson, 69, has made “life experience” a campaign issue. Hernandez, of Aurora, is 24. “I have the life experience to make the best decisions about how your tax dollars are being spent. This position will be my focus, and it won’t be competing with a social life, or a different career,” Pasetti-Olson wrote in a letter she posted on her campaign’s Facebook page. When she tells voters Hernandez’s age, they say, “She is way too young to be doing a job like this,” Pasetti-Olson said in an interview. Hernandez embraces her relative youth. “To my advantage would be that I am young,” she said, and that she has “fresh ideas” and the time and energy to interact with constituents. Hernandez cited the number of organizations and community events with which she has been involved. “What was she doing when she was 23?” Buying a house, paying taxes, raising children and working, Pasetti-Olson replied. Hernandez said she lives with her parents and does not pay rent but contributes money to household expenses. She works for state Rep. Linda Chapa La Via, and for the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. She cited several reasons, including paying college loans and not being ready to purchase property, for her decision. “I honestly think it is a cultural thing as well,” Hernandez said. “As Latinos, we tend to stay with family.” “I don’t feel like I’m too old” to serve effectively on the board, Pasetti-Olson said. She said she has been walking door-to-door to meet voters. Pasetti-Olson supports county board Chairman Chris Lauzen, including his effort to keep the county’s property tax levy frozen. Hernandez thinks the county should increase the levy, at least enough to account for growth due to new properties. Hernandez said she would support requests from the sheriff’s and state’s attorney’s office for more staffing and other resources. But where would money come from? She said the county should pursue getting more money from the state and federal government. “I feel like several state representatives have been able to bring back (money) for their regular (legislative) district, but they haven’t (specifically) looked into Kane County,” Hernandez said. She said she has developed connections in state and local government, working on constituent services for Chapa La Via, that would be useful. Pasetti-Olson does not support increasing staffing and said Kane County should study neighboring DuPage County for ways to reduce it. Pasetti-Olson cited traffic congestion in the district as one issue she is concerned about, specifically the intersection of Orchard Road and Route 30, and along Montgomery Road. She knows Aurora, the Illinois Department of Transportation and Kane County have long-term solutions in mind, but she wants quicker short-term fixes, such as installing more signals on Montgomery.)

He suggests that Farney violated an Illinois Public Act by falsely stating his chief deputy auditor was a certified accountant. A DuPage County judge ruled that the emails were public records and ordered the district to turn over the messages to Jeff Cooper, a former school board candidate who filed a lawsuit in June accusing the district of violating state public records laws. Cooper sued after the district denied his request for the emails under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. . .The judge also ordered the district to pay Cooper’s attorney $5,600 in fees and $362.84 in other costs by Nov. 22. (FROM THE ARTICLE: “Build the wall” has become a rallying cry for millions of conservative Americans who feel left behind by an increasingly diverse America. And “build the wall” is exactly what a group of Loyola students did, but for a very different reason than some conservatives might. “It isn’t about some wall hundreds of miles away,” said junior Addison Mauck, who organized the Mock Border Wall project that was displayed on Loyola’s West Quad from Oct. 18–20. “The purpose of this project is to humanize the topic of immigration and combat the negative rhetoric of the current political season.” The words, “No human being is illegal” and “We are a nation of immigrants,” were displayed on hand-painted banners that hung from the wall’s steel fencing. Despite the project’s supportive message, it garnered harsh criticism from undocumented students who felt they weren’t given a voice in the installation. About 20 signs that read, “Majority of undocumented students were not consulted for this,” were posted on the wall in protest. “We had a student [in] our organization who represented the community of undocumented students because we do not want to force anyone to speak about something that can be very personal and private,” Mauck said in response to the criticism. That student to whom Mauck referred, who wished to remain anonymous because of the sensitive nature of her immigration status, said her role in the project was not very significant. “It raises the question of why more students weren’t reached out to by anyone other than me, because I was not an organizer of the project,” she said. “Our community, both undocumented and immigrant, does have a voice on campus, and other people should not be speaking for us.” Loyola has taken steps to support that community of undocumented students. In 2001, Loyola became involved in the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which provides a pathway to citizenship for children of undocumented parents. Since 2012, about 150 students and faculty have completed “Share the DREAM,” which is training to become an ally for undocumented students, offered by Loyola’s Department of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (SDMA), said SDMA director Joe Saucedo. The training is a three-hour long session that covers DREAM Act legislation, the barriers undocumented students face and the personal stories that those students bring with them, according to Joe Saucedo. “It’s important to know that these students’ status of being undocumented is one aspect of who they are, but it’s not all of who they are,” Saucedo said. “[The training] indicates to someone who may carry those identities that this is a safe space and there are people who get them and understand.”  In order to make it easier for undocumented students to attend Loyola, students voted in 2015 to include a $2.50 fee to each student’s tuition, creating the Magis Scholarship Fund, which provides free tuition and housing to five undocumented students every year. One recipient of the scholarship, sophomore Vince Garcia, said he appreciated Loyola’s support of undocumented students but revealed that he hasn’t received any communication or resources from the university since receiving the scholarship. He said his academic advisor hasn’t completed the DREAM ally training. “I’d say they should communicate better, because I always have questions about health insurance, for example, and I feel like I don’t have anyone to talk to,” said Garcia, a social work major who wants to help undocumented students like himself get a head start. “I think we’re getting better at this. Part of our job is taking stock of the barriers that students face, and we try to bring in the students themselves and ask them how they feel,” said Saucedo. “The most important thing we can do, as people with citizenship privilege who can vote, is to continue to elect politicians who will support these programs and keep the interests of undocumented students in mind.”)

That’s one politically quirky result of a poll taken by Swapalease last month, which linked respondent’s political preferences to car choices. About 2,500 people participated in the unscientific, opt-in survey. When asked what kind of car best suited their personalities, Democrats were most likely to choose the Tesla, while Republicans saw themselves as ‘Vette-like. The Tesla/Corvette dichotomy also split down gender lines, as many men wanted Corvettes (no shock there) and women preferred Teslas. Other cars that registered on the “personality” list were big sellers such as the Honda Accord and Ford F-150 as well as the Hummer and the Chevrolet Volt. Granted, the results of the poll were tilted a bit, as the respondents were two-thirds male, while Republicans outnumbered Democrats by a 3-to-2 margin. When guessing which cars the presidential candidates would prefer to drive, the respondents said Republican candidate Donald Trump would drive a Cadillac Escalade, while Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton would choose a Mercedes-Benz GL Class. With the survey pool leaning Republican, 39 percent of those polled said they would vote for Trump, 36 percent would choose Clinton, and the rest would choose the always-elusive “Someone Else.” On that note, when given various choices to describe the “personality of this year’s election,” a third of those polled said “a driverless car.” As for how long the respondents said they’d keep their cars, most ranged from 21 to 36 months. Which is quite a bit shorter than a presidential term. Even with the unscientific methods at use here, we can perhaps learn a little something, since the connection between electric cars and Democrats has been seen before. But, naturally, we know that Republicans can like Tesla, too. Some of them even buy five of them. They just might be outliers.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Even weeks after her passing, conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly is suffering attacks from #NeverTrumpers and an activist judge. For what Schlafly’s son, Roger Schlafly, calls indecipherable reasons, low-rated Illinois Judge John B. Barberis has ordered Schlafly’s Eagle Forum to remove all pro-Trump articles which were posted to the group’s website after April 10, 2016. Schlafly spent the last year of her life supporting GOP nominee Donald Trump for the presidency. But she also spent it arguing with a small handful of board members of her own organization about that support. And now, in the weeks after her death, that small group of officers have taken Eagle Forum to court and have somehow succeeded in getting a judge to shut down the Eagle Forum political action organization Schlafly spent a lifetime building. All in an effort to eliminate information about the very candidate she fully supported. In the months before her passing, Phyllis fought off the small group of board members who tried to oust her from the very organization she built. And it was all because she supported Donald Trump against their wishes. In April she issued a video telling the world she was still in charge. But apparently the fight has now continued beyond her death. This month Judge Barberis issued an order filled with demands that Schlafly’s son, Roger, feels are if not illegal, at the very least un-American. The judge’s order seems to be compelling people not a party to the #NeverTrumpers’ lawsuit to do things. For instance, Roger was not named in any of the lawsuits brought against Eagle Forum by the handful of #NeverTrump board members, yet the judge’s order says that Roger must remove all pro-Trump items from the Eagle Forum website. Roger Schlafly, though, decided to take the whole website down and leave an explanation letter in its place because he can’t understand the order given by this #NeverTrump judge. The lawsuit is against Eagle Forum c4 but orders me personally to assist in transferring “Eagle Forum [c4] Property”. This is in spite of the fact that I am not a party to the case, and the court papers say that I am “not associated or affiliated with Eagle Forum [c4] in any way.” Roger also noted that the judge is demanding that he and others on the board refrain from advocating for any political positions as the #NeverTrump activists continue their lawsuit. I have never heard of any political advocacy organization being ordered not to express opinions on a web site. Not in the USA, anyway. I thought that the First Amendment prohibited that sort of thing. Roger goes on to say that the judge also told him he is not allowed to even talk to “third parties” about anything involving Eagle Forum. He then asks since when does any American need permission from a government to talk to a third-party about anything? He concludes explaining what he is doing with the site…  Complying with this order will not be easy. I am not sure exactly what was on the site on April 10. If I remove the pro-Trump articles, I will create dead links. If I explain the dead links, I might be accused of advocating something. I am reluctant to even post the court order, as that might be construed as advocating about litigation. I am not sure that the Eagle Forum c4 even has any property on the web site. Most of the site involves political works and activities of Phyllis Schlafly, and these have nothing to do with the plaintiffs in this lawsuit. I have tried to understand the their demands, but they have never even expressed any interest in the web site, as far as I know. Rolling back Phyllis Schlafly’s web site to purge her pro-Trump views is a dishonest and treacherous thing to do, and I refuse to do it, unless forced by the court. So I am shutting down the eagleforum.org web site for now. I am very sorry about this, and hope to have it back up when the legal issues are settled. So, who is this Judge John B. Barberis? He is the judge on the Illinois Third Judicial Circuit Court and is running to fill a vacancy on the Illinois Fifth District Appellate Court. But Barberis, running as a Republican, was not endorsed by the Illinois State Bar Association and was rated as “not recommended” in 2014.)
