My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, and coworkers did everything that could to destroy me. They stressed that GAO had forced me to take a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer. They stressed that my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. They stressed that my Democrat Post Office superiors had forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. They demonized, denigrated, and condemned as being completely worthless a) the experience that I had gained working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880, b) what I had learned earning a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul, c) what I had learned passing the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, d) what I had learned earning an MBA from Loyola in 1976, e) etc. They stressed that I was a Republican, that I was conservative, that I was 100% German national origin, that my ancestors had been in America since 1844, that I had been baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, that I had avoided the draft, that I had owned a 1972 Corvette since 1971, and that my wife owned a home in Wheaton. They hinted/implied/argued/shouted that if I had started with GAO instead of IRS in 1971, GAO would never have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974. They hinted/implied/argued/shouted that all executive branch employees are grossly inferior to all legislative branch employees. They used Money Magazine’s nasty February 1978 article on my wife and I to paint us as being undeservedly filthy rich DINKs (dual income, no kids).)

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-battleground-special-rep/special-report-the-trump-trap-republicans-duck-president-in-key-house-races-idUSKCN1MF13Y
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Six-term Representative Peter Roskam has a good sense of how voters in Illinois’ 6th Congressional District feel about the president. Despite re-electing the Republican congressman in 2016, they backed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over Trump by nearly 7 percentage points. The district typifies the battlegrounds where Republican candidates face anti-Trump headwinds: a fast-growing suburb west of Chicago with a median income near $100,000. Roskam has made no statements of support for Trump on his website or in posts this year to his social media accounts. He acknowledges that associating himself with the president might do more harm than good. Having Trump campaign for him in the district “obviously wouldn’t be helpful,” he said in an interview. Roskam has criticized Trump’s tariffs on imported goods and has decried the administration’s separation of immigrant children from parents. After Trump held a July press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin and refused to condemn Putin for interference in the 2016 U.S. elections, Roskam called Trump’s performance “an affront to American democracy.” But Roskam notes that he also backs the president on issues important to pro-Trump voters, such as raising military spending and lowering taxes. In an August tweet, Roskam described as “absurd” a statement by his Democratic opponent comparing Trump with al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden. “This district is discerning,” Roskam said, and voters want a candidate who will represent their interests independent of the president. But Roskam’s reluctance to embrace Trump isn’t enough for some of the anti-Trump Republicans he’s trying to capture. “Peter Roskam has distanced himself from Trump, but he doesn’t stand up to him,” said Bill Wentz, 73, a lifelong Republican and former federal government lawyer. Roskam hasn’t done enough to fight the president on economic policies that Wentz says undermine traditional Republican support for free markets by picking “winners and losers.” He also is uncomfortable with Trump’s failure to fully embrace U.S. intelligence agencies’ finding that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. elections. Wentz’s answer: vote for Roskam’s Democratic opponent, Sean Casten. Fostering enthusiasm among disaffected Republicans without alienating Trump loyalists is a tall order, says Christine Matthews, a pollster advising Republican candidates. The president’s core supporters “don’t want to see any distance between you and Trump,” Matthews says, while some college-educated Republicans and independents are “motivated to vote against Trump.” Reuters/Ipsos polling suggests the number of Republicans who are so turned off that they are likely to stay home is relatively small. Among moderate, registered Republicans with college degrees and incomes of $75,000 or more – a group somewhat less supportive of Trump than other Republicans – less than 1 percent say they don’t plan to vote. The bigger threat is the 14 percent in that Republican demographic who, like Wentz in Illinois, say they will back a Democrat or a third-party candidate.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Around 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 every day, and the same number will continue doing so for years. Some are on solid financial ground after a lifetime of planning and the fortune of well-timed home purchases and stock investments. Most of the rest are unprepared. Fifty-four percent of households with middle incomes—ranging from around $48,000 to $95,000 a year—don’t have enough saved to maintain their quality of living in retirement, according to the Boston College Center for Retirement Research. Some of those who saved were hit by unforeseen health-care costs. Others took on debt for education. Yet more made investment mistakes or lost their savings in the 2008 financial crisis. Those wildly different circumstances are leading to hard-to-resolve social tensions, which are playing out every day at retirement communities across the country.)

September 29 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Who will the anti-Kavanaughs focus on destroying in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois? Of course, the more demographics that you share with Kavanaugh, the more that they will do to destroy you. How many demographics do you share with Kavanaugh? Both Kavanaugh and I are Trump supporters, Christian, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, married, non-poor, and non-veteran. I assume that he is a gun owner and that his ancestors have been in America for a long time. However, I am not an attorney, let alone a judge. I was baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran. All my ancestors came from what is now Germany. My wife and I are childless. None of my degrees are from Ivy League universities. None of my ancestors attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I graduated from a public co-ed high school. My participation in sports was all but ended by a bone disease. I did not display any kind of leadership potential in high school or college. My college majors were management, business, accounting, and finance. I never made any academic honor roles. I was never a member of a fraternity. While Kavanaugh lived in a “dilapidated group house” when he attended law school, I stayed at University Plaza Dormitory and Lincolnshire West Apartments while I attended NIU. While Democrats forced me into early retirement in 1997 when I was 49 years old, Republicans nominated Kavanaugh for the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 when he was 53 years old. While I am a Republican Precinct Committeeman, Kavanaugh is not. While am a State Editor for www.GOPUSA.com, Kavanaugh is not. While Kavanaugh “serves as a lector at his Washington, D.C. church, the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament. He has helped serve meals to the homeless as part of church programs, and has tutored at the Washington Jesuit Academy, a Catholic private school in the District of Columbia,”  I am not a member of a church, I do not attend church services, and I do not give money to a church. While “Kavanaugh’s reported salary as a federal judge is $220,600 and $27,000 as a lecturer at Harvard Law School, my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $51,864 and my Social Security is only $2,064. – Dave Diersen

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If signed into law, it would also make the $10,000 limit on state and local tax deductions permanent. That’s been a thorn in the side of high tax states like Illinois, but Tax Foundation analyst Nicole Kaeding says that tax reform as a whole is keeping more money in Illinois taxpayers’ pockets. “Every individual in every congressional district across the country is seeing a net tax cut this year, even with the SALT cap,” she said. Others with the Tax Foundation have called the SALT deduction poor fiscal policy that subsidizes high-earners in high-tax states.)

— Dan Rather: If GOP Confirm Kavanaugh, They’re ‘Extinct’ Like the Dinosaurs – Nicholas Fondacaro (DIERSEN: How many demographics do you share with Kavanaugh? While “Kavanaugh’s reported salary as a federal judge is $220,600 and $27,000 as a lecturer at Harvard Law School, my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $51,864 and my Social Security is only $2,064.)

I worked for IRS’s Collection Division for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,070-$91,880, before I transferred to GAO in 1980. While my Democrat GAO superiors assigned me to audits of IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division 1986-1988, they refused to assign me to audits of IRS’s Collection Division. They would have assigned me to audits of IRS’s Collection Division if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, and/or veteran.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded promotions and pay increases to five political operatives with no housing policy experience within their first months on the job, demonstrating what government watchdogs and career staff describe as a premium put on loyalty over expertise. The raises, documented in a Washington Post analysis of HUD political hires, resulted in annual salaries between $98,000 and $155,000 for the five appointees, all of whom had worked on Donald Trump’s or Ben Carson’s presidential campaigns. Three of them did not list bachelor’s degrees on their résumés. The political hires were among at least 24 people without evident housing policy experience who were appointed to the best-paying political positions at HUD, an agency charged with serving the poorest Americans. They account for a third of the 70 HUD appointees at the upper ranks of the federal government, with salaries above $94,000, according to the Post review of agency records. The limited experience at the upper reaches of the agency — HUD Secretary Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, has no prior housing, executive or government background — injected confusion into the rollout of policy initiatives and brought delays to even routine functions, according to interviews with 16 current and former career staff members. “This administration is different, because the people coming in really don’t know housing at all,” said Ron Ashford, who retired as director of HUD’s public-housing supportive-service programs in January after 22 years at the agency. “As a result, they’re pursuing initiatives that aren’t grounded in reality.”)

— McGlasson says Long is latest target of GOP cleansing campaign – W.J. Kennedy
https://illinoisvalleytimes.com/stories/511571904-mcglasson-says-long-is-latest-target-of-gop-cleansing-campaign
(FROM THE ARTICLE: John McGlasson, central committeeman for Illinois’ 16th Congressional District believes the Republican Party is attempting to torpedo the re-election of Rep. Jerry Long (R-Streator) in a campaign to rid the party of anyone not in lockstep with Gov. Bruce Rauner. “[The Illinois GOP] targeted me and three others in our run for Central Committee (last spring),” McGlasson told the Illinois Valley Times. “I saw what dirty tricks they can play. Bob Winchester knows this too.” Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) ran against Winchester in the race for Republican State Central Committeeman in the15th Congressional District. The Republican Party declared Rose the winner after tallying votes by acclamation and not individually, a procedure that counters both Illinois Election Code and party rules, according to the Prairie State Wire. Winchester challenged the results, but the case is still languishing in U.S. district court. Despite being targeted by the party, McGlasson, Mark Shaw in the 10th district, and Fred Floreth in the 13th district all won their races for Central Committee. Shaw went on to cut a deal with the party and is now state co-chair. Long doesn’t talk the “same line” as Rauner, who trails Democrat J.B. Pritzker by double digits in the polls, McGlasson said. “It’s my opinion that Rauner believes the only way he can win this thing is to have everyone talking the same line and get only those targeted votes to come out,” he said. Rauner, McGlasson added, isn’t looking for a big turnout out but a select one. “He has to be hoping for a big snowstorm on election day,” he said. The Republican party recently dropped support for Long, including funding from the House Republican Organization (HRO), after it was “made aware of allegations into Rep. Long’s behavior,” according to a statement by House Republican Leader Jim Durkin. The accuser, an HRO employee, accused Long of harassment. Long quickly released a statement saying he was only guilty of having a different perspective on HRO’s level of support for his race and that he will continue campaigning at a grassroots level. “This is not sexual harassment of any kind but merely a difference of opinion on the lack of support by the Republican Party that goes back several months,” Long said. “At this time I have no intention on pulling out of the race because this just proves that I’m not a part of the ‘Good Ole Boys’ club.” Long is expected to release another statement after consulting with his lawyers, a source said. McGlasson and local Republican leaders in the 76th district recently met and reaffirmed their support for Long. “It’s unimaginable to me that they (GOP) would cede such a hard-won seat,” McGlasson said. In 2016, Long defeated Andy Skoog (D-Utica) by 607 votes. The Democrats had held the seat for decades. On Nov. 6, he faces off against Democrat Lance Yednock of Ottawa.)

Kasich says GOP lawmakers need to realize they must serve the people and “not a political party or a president.” Ever-increasingly “the people,” that is, anti-Trumps and anti-Americans, want lawmakers to use government to get rid of individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, draft avoiders, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time. That is why the aforesaid a) voted for Trump in 2016, b) will vote for Trump in 2020, and c) have bought and will buy as many firearms and as much ammunition as they feel is necessary for their self-defense.

— Questions to ask before starting job hunt – Jill Schlesinger (DIERSEN: How many full-time jobs have you had since you earned your bachelor’s degree? I sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances for Firestone Stores 1970-1971; collected delinquent taxes for IRS 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies for GAO 1980-1997. I should write a book about transferring between federal agencies. I took a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.)
https://www.pressreader.com/usa/chicago-tribune/20180910/281805694821732
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Changing careers is becoming the rule rather than the exception. According to a long-term study by the Labor Department, people born in the years 1957 to 1964 held an average of 11.7 jobs from ages 18 to 48.)
— More retirees filing for bankruptcy – Elliot Raphaelson (DIERSEN: If your retirement is financially secure, and your critics/opponents were asked what are the reasons for that, what would they say? For me, my critics/opponents would say a) that my parents, my grandparents, my great grandparents, and the rest of my ancestors discriminated against minorities and discriminated against females and that I directly benefitted from that discrimination, b) that I was born a healthy White male, c) that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth and that I have always been privileged, d) that I avoided the draft, e) that the federal government grossly overpaid me, f) that I married someone who has lots of income and savings, g) that we gave up trying to have children, we did not adopt, and we did not become foster parents, h) that my federal retirement benefits are much too generous, and i) I have never given lots of money to churches like they do. In my defense, I have always spent less money on immediate pleasures than my peers, I have always put the maximum into IRAs and Roth IRAs, and I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/success/savingsgame/tca-more-retirees-filing-for-bankruptcy-20180831-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A new study from the Consumer Bankruptcy Project indicates that the rate of bankruptcy among Americans ages 65 and older has tripled since 1991. More people ages 55 to 65 also are filing for bankruptcy. I am not surprised. People are going into retirement with more debt, including much higher mortgage debt. For example, in 1995, only 22 percent of 65 year-olds had mortgage debt; now 38 percent do. The average mortgage debt in 1995 was $27,300; now it is $73,000. Those are scary numbers. The proportion of retirees who have defined-benefit pension plans has decreased substantially. According to the Pension Research Center, a mere 23 percent of U.S. workers have such a pension plan. Today’s retirees are more dependent on defined-contribution plans, such as 401(k)s. With a defined contribution plan, the retiree must manage the portfolio himself or herself or pay a financial planner to do so. Most retirees don’t have the financial expertise to manage their own portfolio. Our educational system is inadequate when it comes to teaching us how to effectively manage a portfolio. Another important factor is age of retirement. Many employees would like to work longer before retiring, but most corporations offer early retirement incentives so they can hire younger workers at lower salaries. When an early retiree looks for other work, he/she faces age discrimination, with practically no recourse, despite anti-discrimination laws. Most people who need to retire early are forced to accept Social Security at age 62, and their benefit is significantly reduced. Although it would be beneficial to wait until age 70, most retirees simply can’t afford to. Another factor is health-care costs. These costs increase at much higher rates than other costs. Many corporations have reduced the health-care benefits for retirees. For seniors, the costs of Medicare, supplemental health care and prescription drugs keep increasing at high rates. Congressional representatives talks a lot about controlling prescription drug costs, but they have been unsuccessful in doing so. Those who use Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage find that as drug costs keep increasing, they are in the bubble much earlier in the year, resulting in much greater costs. The drug companies have substantial lobbies in the U.S., which has resulted in higher drug prices for U.S. citizens than for those overseas. Dental costs increase also for seniors more than for the general population, and Medicare doesn’t cover these costs. Many companies have either no dental coverage or inadequate coverage for retirees. Another factor is longer expected life. Although it is great news that we are living longer, there are other implications. The longer we live, a larger the nest egg that is needed going into retirement to ensure that our money will last for as long as we live. It’s hard to build a larger asset base going into retirement if corporations want their workers to retire early. Moreover, as expected life expectancy increases, insurance companies reduce monthly payments for lifetime annuities. Another factor is required support for other family members. Because tuition costs have increased dramatically, most college graduates are graduating with high debt. As retirees assist their children with this debt, it puts more of a burden on their financial well-being. So, it is not surprising that older people are increasingly filing for bankruptcy.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In addition to all the buzz around the mayor’s race, the November election for Illinois governor looms. Both incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic Challenger J.B. Pritzker were there. Rauner spoke about the importance of the Mexican American community in Illinois. “We are very proud in Illinois, we have one of the largest, most vibrant Mexican-American communities anywhere in the world. We are very proud here,” said Rauner, who has attended the parade every year since he’s been governor. The Republican governor made clear his position on immigrant communities is not in line with that of President Donald Trump. “We are a welcoming state built by immigrants, we welcome immigrants from around the world.”)
