After four years of free access to its readers, the digital source for news, commentary and analysis about state and local government will be shifting next week to a paid subscription model. “We’re moving from a public affairs journalism organization primarily supported by seed investments and advertising to one supported mainly by your subscriptions,” publisher Madeleine Doubek emailed readers Thursday. “We started Reboot Illinois four years ago with the help of some seed funding from prominent Chicagoans who were concerned, like we were, that citizens were not getting reliable and fair reporting, in-depth analysis, or a wide range of commentary and infographics about our local and state governments in Illinois,” she wrote. “Our mission has been and remains to inform, engage and activate Illinoisans about the governments we all own.” Reboot Illinois was bankrolled in 2012 by hedge fund manager Anne Dias, founder of Aragon Global Management (and ex-wife of billionaire Ken Griffin), who hired the editorial and technology teams, and oversaw the platform’s initial digital and marketing efforts. Earlier this year Dias sold her ownership interest to AFK Media Group, a Chicago-based investor group headed by entrepreneur Anthony Knierim. Doubek said Thursday that AFK Media remains “fully behind” the mission. “From the start, Reboot Illinois was always envisioned as a self-supporting, profitable media firm and this is another step to get us closer to that goal,” she told me. (In her email to readers, Doubek noted: “In the past decade, the rates advertisers pay throughout digital media have been dropping fast. Advertising simply isn’t enough to support our work any longer.”) At the outset, subscribers will be charged $12 per month or a discounted rate of $120 a year. Current readers will be offered a 50 percent discount for the first four months, or an annual rate of $100 if they sign up before year end. — Naperville Township trustee resigns  Naperville Township Trustee Janice Anderson resigned from her position Nov. 29 after her election to the DuPage County Board. For the fall term at OSU, Artan was taking a class titled “Crossing Identity Boundaries,” offered by OSU’s Higher Education and Student Affairs program in the education department. The class in question is dedicated to “exploring issues of diversity and inequality as well as their personal and social responsibility for building a more just university and society.” A look at the class’s syllabus reveals that much of it is simply a catalog of alleged oppression in American society. Different class days focused on topics like white privilege and racism, and the syllabus is replete with reading assignments like “Dragon ladies, snow queens, and Asian-American dykes: Reflections on race and sexuality.” In fact, just two weeks before Artan’s rampage, the class focused on the topic of religious oppression, with a particular focus on the alleged oppression of Muslims. Readings for the November 16 class included “Creating identity-safe spaces on college campuses for Muslim students,” while the Nov. 17 discussion on “Unpacking Religious Oppression” included the reading “Christian privilege: Breaking a sacred taboo.”)

On November 8th Americans voted and then held their breath.  Nothing less than the continuation of the United States as a constitutional republic hung in the balance.  After the polls closed, there emerged a result that would confound the ideologues and reassure nervous patriotic Americans:  Donald Trump was elected President of the United States. Overcoming the obstacles left by decades of disinformation from the dominant leftist news media, false indoctrination in our schools and colleges, corrosive popular entertainment, and the hidden but almost certainly widespread election fraud perpetrated by the radical left, Americans voted decisively to stop the deconstruction of the Constitution and the rule of law. But this will be a fleeting victory if qualified conservatives fail to step up and seek appointments in the Trump Administration.  Donald Trump now needs the help of conservative Americans like you.  President-elect Trump needs reinforcements from capable, principled, courageous conservatives to help him make America great again. To help him manage this massive Executive Branch workforce (they are supposed to help him “take care that the laws be faithfully executed”) President-elect Trump will appoint about 4,000 civil officers and lower officials who will serve at his pleasure.  You can see that the conservative principles of leadership, competence, courage, and initiative of these 4,000 appointees will be crucial to the rehabilitation of the rule of law in the United States Government. Will you answer the call of duty and apply to serve in the Trump Administration?  Will you encourage other capable, brave, conservative Americans to seek to serve in the Trump Administration? In late 1980 and early 1981, I worked full-time in the Presidential Personnel Office of President-elect Ronald Reagan.  Then I worked for three years on President Reagan’s White House Staff. Those of us in the Reagan White House saw that where the right people are given responsibility, good things tend to happen.  A principled appointee will look for ways to implement his principles.  Those without principles will tend to do nothing unless they are told to do it.  A too centralized organization cannot achieve as much as an intelligently de-centralized one. Personnel is policy. Every Presidential political appointee has some power to make things happen.  Will you be one of them?
