Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, said the National Voter Registration Act requires the state to perform list maintenance and remove ineligible voters. U.S. District Court Judge Sara L. Ellis dismissed two plaintiffs from the case last week, but Ives’ group, Breakthrough Ideas, was not dismissed and retains standing as a plaintiff along with Illinois Family Action. The groups filed suit with Judicial Watch attorneys in March of 2024. Ives said it’s obvious that voter lists are not well-maintained in Illinois. “This creates extra costs people should not have to incur and it wastes time as well, not to mention it invites fraud when you do not have cleaned-up voter lists,” Ives told The Center Square. Ives said the dead have voted in Illinois. “I’ve pointed out a couple of dead people that I know casted votes, and there was no adequate explanation for why that occurred. In the state of Illinois, this becomes even more problematic when you have permanent vote by mail,” Ives explained. “So you will have ballots being sent to people that are possibly moved or dead, which makes list maintenance even more important in the state of Illinois.” Ives said 23 Illinois counties with a combined registration list of 980,089 voters reported removing only 100 registrations over a two-year period. “That is an absurdly small number. There is no possible way those counties were conducting a general program that makes an effort to clean up the voter rolls, because only a hundred people died in 23 counties? Nobody believes that, so we know that they’re not doing what they should do,” Ives said. On July 8, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a 15-page statement of interest in the case. “When Illinois voters cast their ballots, they should be confident that their vote is given its due weight, undiluted by ineligible voters,” the statement began. “It is critical to remove ineligible voters from the registration rolls so that elections are conducted fairly, accurately, and without fraud,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division in a press release regarding the statement of interest. “Under the NVRA, states have the responsibility to conduct a robust program of list maintenance. The Department of Justice will vigorously enforce those requirements to ensure compliance.” Ives said the case could have ramifications across the country. She said it is possible that the DOJ will file its own lawsuit. As for what’s next, Ives said parties were waiting for a written ruling and it’s possible there could be a hearing later this month. Ives said she suspects there could be a settlement in the case.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: AND SO IT BEGINS: DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick took the low-key approach to roll out his announcement that he’s running for the Republican nomination for governor in 2026. It was a message on Facebook. And it created plenty of buzz. Mendrick’s been receiving calls and emails ever since, including donation offers. It’s still in the works. Mendrick doesn’t even have a campaign manager yet. His wife, a psychiatric nurse, filled the role in his two bids for sheriff, “but this will be too big for her to do alone so we’re going to figure all that out this weekend,” he said in an interview with your Playbook host. Mendrick doesn’t have Ken Griffin or Dan Proft working behind the scenes for him. And didn’t even think to call Republican Chair Kathy Salvi before he made his announcement. “I did not plan on running for sure,” Mendrick said. He made the surprise move after choosing not to leave Illinois because he didn’t like how it’s being run. He’s now staying put in Woodridge after his 25-year-old son said he wasn’t budging. Mendrick and his wife also have a 22-year-old son with autism and are active in the disability community, he said. His campaign should be taken seriously, according to a GOP insider we talked to. Mendrick has been a police officer since 1996, following in the footsteps of his father. He’s been sheriff since 2018. Now, instead of retiring outright, he’s going to enter the state’s biggest political ring: the governor’s race. It doesn’t scare him. Mendrick currently oversees the county-wide correctional facility, where he says he sees first-hand how crime and immigration has challenged the state. Mendrick is focused on the SAFE-T Act. He disagrees with letting potential offenders out on bail instead of letting them clean up their addictions and get mental health assistance in jail. “I do believe that we’re doing God’s work,” he said. The sheriff opposes the state’s TRUST Act, which makes Illinois a sanctuary state. He calls it an “unfunded mandate” that prompts new immigrants from all over the country to move to Illinois, putting a strain on services. As for the state budget, Mendrick says, “I very much believe everything should be done within our economic footprint. You should never go outside what you can afford.” His politics: “I’m a Republican with a lot of conservative values,” Mendrick said, adding he doesn’t want to be labeled in a political way, though his social media posts suggest he leans far right. “It’s hard to be a slave to the politics,” he said. “It’s just about doing the right thing.” Mendrick is the first Republican officially in the race, but there will be others. Aaron Del Mar, a 2022 lieutenant governor candidate, is mulling a bid. Also mulling: Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker has yet to announce whether he’ll run for a third term in 2026 — and/or if he’ll make a run for president in 2028.)

(FROM THEW ARTICLE: A resolution before the DuPage County Board on Tuesday would remove the name of the late Congressman Henry J. Hyde from the county’s Wheaton courthouse and rescind previous approval for a monument there in his honor. The courthouse became the Henry J. Hyde Judicial Office Facility in 2010, three years after the Republican lawmaker from Wood Dale died at 83 years old. The new measure, if approved, would rename the building the DuPage County Judicial Office Facility. During an interview Sunday, County Board Chair Deb Conroy referenced the Hyde Amendment, legislation introduced by Hyde in 1976 that prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for abortions, with some exceptions. “While Henry Hyde was a very well respected Republican elected official, the Hyde Amendment is very offensive to women, particularly women in Illinois,” said Conroy, a Democrat from Elmhurst. “I think overwhelmingly women in Illinois believe that all women have the right to health care, regardless of their ability to have private insurance.” Conroy said she told a Daily Herald editorial board in 2022 that she would take this action if elected chair. “I consider myself a woman of my word,” she added. “I very much value my bipartisan board, and we work very well together, which is why I put it off for two years.” If the full board approved the resolution, the Hyde family would receive a plaque that would be removed from the building. James Zay, a Republican county board member from Carol Stream, called the effort to remove Hyde’s name “narrow-minded.” “Henry Hyde did so much for DuPage County,” said Zay, who supported the renaming in 2010. “He brought so much funding into DuPage County for stormwater, for roads.” While the conservative Hyde may be best known for the amendment that bears his name, as well as his leading role in the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, Zay noted that he also supported gun control measures like the Brady bill and assault weapons ban. “You can’t rewrite history,” he added. “My question is, who is next?
