http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2018/06/07/dunkin-wont-leave-board-despite-rauners-request/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The reason? An accusation on Wednesday from Sherri Garrett, a longtime aide to Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan. “In spring of 2013, former (Illinois) State Representative Ken Dunkin approached the house well and said to me and another woman ‘I want to take both of you home and see which one will be the naughtiest,’” said Garrett. Dunkin’s response? “Those are 100 per cent baseless accusations.” But Governor Rauner apparently didn’t think so. After appointing Dunkin to the board just last month, Rauner asked Dunkin to step aside.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “In one sentence,” the interviewer asks, “why are you running for governor?” J.B. doesn’t hesitate: “Because everything that I care about, and I think everything we care about, is under siege by Bruce Rauner and Donald Trump.” And then he quickly adds: “I gotta go.” I thing the “I gotta go” is my favorite part of the whole ad. J.B. has time to answer questions about concerts, TV shows and favorite seasons, but when it comes to running the state of Illinois, he’s gotta go. Nothing about the pension crisis, the budget crisis, the tax crisis, the education crisis, the innocent people getting shot every day in Chicago crisis (including kids sitting on their front stoop), people leaving in Illinois in droves crisis or the what kind of sandwich does Michael Madigan want crisis, and he’s gotta go.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180607/comedy-central-show-pokes-fun-at-libertarian-governor-candidate-kash-jackson
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Klepper poked fun at Jackson during a May 30 segment called “Fringewatch: 2018.” In the segment, Klepper ribbed Jackson for changing his name from Benjamin Winderweedle in 2017, accusations made by the ex-wife regarding the way Jackson punished his children, and the size of Jackson’s belt buckle. . .On May 31, Lake County Judge Joseph Salvi ruled Jackson is in contempt of court for not paying money he owes his ex-wife for child support, education, and other related expenses. Jackson has until Aug. 6 to pay his ex-wife more than $3,000 or face incarceration for up to six months, court records show. Jackson has repeatedly said he’s a victim of a rigged legal system that forces him to pay excessive amounts to see his children. He has said he is unemployed and living exclusively on disability and pension payments from serving 20 years in the Navy. He’s said in court he takes home about $4,500 a month from those benefits. Payments for his children total about $2,500 per month, an amount Jackson said in court that he can’t afford. Parental rights is a key campaign issue for Jackson, who was named the Libertarian gubernatorial candidate in March.)

In 1971, after I had earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970 and had worked for Firestone Stores as a Retail Sales Manager, I started at IRS as a GS-7 (currently $45,703/year) Revenue Officer. Very few accept job offers from IRS because IRS employees are viciously demonized, viciously denigrated, and viciously condemned. Factors that encouraged me to accept IRS’s offer included a) I was unemployed because Firestone had fired me because I had accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile, but Oldsmobile had withdrawn that offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint, b) I had been granted a financial hardship draft deferment to help support my mother and brother, and c) I would start with almost 3 years of federal seniority and lots of sick leave because I had worked for the Post Office 1966-1969 and had used virtually none of the sick leave that I had earned.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Under President Donald Trump, cable television is rapidly becoming the government’s new pardons office. On Thursday, former CIA officer John Kiriakou became the latest person to take to the talk-show circuit, making a direct appeal to the president to wipe clean his conviction for leaking the identity of a fellow CIA officer. “I would be forever indebted to him for a pardon,” Kiriakou said during an interview on “Fox & Friends” on Fox News, a program that Trump often watches as part of his morning routine. Kiriakou was charged in 2012 with leaking classified information about the CIA waterboarding of an al-Qaida suspect at a secret site in Thailand. He argued Thursday that he was unfairly targeted by former CIA director John Brennan, who has since become a vocal critic of Trump’s actions related to the Russian investigation and other matters.)

— Ousted Madigan aide (Tim Mapes, age 63) eligible for hefty (more than $135,000/year) pension – Ray Long (DIERSEN: Are you in line to get a hefty pension or are you getting a hefty pension now? Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that my Democrat GAO superiors ousted me because I was a bad employee like Mapes and a) NOT because since 1988 I had been an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged them with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation; b) NOT because I had always complained about political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation; c) NOT because they were under tremendous pressure from Democrat politicians to get rid of their employees who shared my demographics (Republican, White, male, old, non-veteran); and d) NOT because Newt Gingrich had dramatically cut GAO’s budget and GAO had promised its employees who were minority, female, younger, and/or veteran that they would not suffer because of those dramatic budget cuts.)

Ever-increasingly, the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) shouts that it is anti-conservative, pro-Democrat, pro-Libertarian, and pro-Green. How soon, if not already, will the IRP officially banish conservatives, that is, how soon, if not already, will the IRP officially banish its base?)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-cook-county-video-gambling-20180606-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “This is an opportunity for us to bring in revenue from people who want to pay the revenue, not by forcing something on somebody,” Commissioner Tim Schneider, a Bartlett Republican, said during a meeting Tuesday where officials discussed the plan. When video gambling machines went live in Illinois during fall 2012, Cook County prohibited them from unincorporated areas. Under state law, each establishment authorized to operate video gambling is allowed up to five machines. Schneider, who proposed the expansion plan in unincorporated Cook County said the measure would allow businesses with a liquor license to apply for video gambling. There are approximately 60 businesses with liquor licenses in unincorporated Cook, Schneider said. Ninety out of 132 municipalities in the county have allowed video gambling, Schneider said, arguing that the expansion will allow business in unincorporated Cook County to compete with them and “level the playing field.” Currently, electronic gambling devices in Cook County are taxed $1,000 per machine and $200 per year per terminal, according to Edward Nelson, a spokesman for the county’s finance bureau. Gambling revenue from incorporated areas of Cook County is expected to bring in $2.1 million this fiscal year, which is an increase from the year before, Nelson said in an email. There was little debate over the measure inside the county building Wednesday, though commissioner Bridget Gainer, D-Chicago, voted no, saying gambling can “create an undue burden on families.” Schneider said video gambling is “carefully regulated.” Officials from municipalities that have adopted video gambling reported “limited or no problems,” he said. Commissioners voted 9-1 in favor of the plan, with three voting present. Anita Bedell, executive director of the Illinois Church Action on Alcohol and Addiction Problems, called the expansion a “very bad idea.” “More people will gamble,” Bedell said, and it will lead to increased social costs, including addiction and divorce. “The money comes from residents that lose the money,” Bedell said. Sean Morrison, R-Palos Park, echoed Schneider’s points about creating a “level playing field” for business. He said this will generate new revenue without being a “mandated tax.” “You gamble if you choose or you don’t,” he said.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— WHEATON INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE AND FIREWORKS: Please help me encourage Republican candidates on November 6, 2018 ballots in Wheaton a) to have an entry in Wheaton’s Independence Day parade and b) to help sponsor the parade. Those candidates include Peter Roskam, Bruce Rauner and Evelyn Sanguinetti, Erika Harold, Jason Helland, Darlene Senger, Jim Dodge, Mike Connelly, Chris Nybo, Amy Grant, Peter Breen, Darlene Ruscitti, Dan Cronin, James Mendrick, Paul Hinds, Gwen Henry, Grant Eckhoff, Chris Zaruba, Kevin Wiley, Jim Zay, Al Murphy, Joseph Cantore, Karen Wilson, and Jeff Mackay. The deadline for parade entries is June 11, 2018 and the cost is $180. SEE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/july-2018-independence-day-celebration-parade-entry-tickets-43661232923?aff=es2 This year again, for the 13th year in a row, DuPage Republicans will help sponsor the parade and the fireworks the evening before. So far, outstandingly, Illinois Republican Party leader and Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar has contributed $500 toward the $2,500 sponsorship pledge. DuPage County Republicans will get credit for sponsoring the Tunes of Glory bagpipers and the Wheaton North and South High School bands. DuPage Republicans will again have a booth at the fireworks the evening before the parade. I will again hand deliver a flyer to all the residences and businesses on the parade route that lists the sponsors and the amount that they contributed. Please urge the candidates to phone me at 630-653-0462 about sponsorship and mail a check made out to the Wheaton Park District for $100 or more to me at 915 Cove Court, Wheaton, Illinois 60189-6326. Thanks. – Dave Diersen

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— JULY 4, 2017 EVENING EDITION FLASHBACK: Republicans who participated in Wheaton’s outstanding Independence Day Parade this morning were: DuPage State’s Attorney Bob Berlin; DuPage County District 4 officials Grant Eckhoff, Tim Elliott, Amy Grant, and Tim Whelan; James Mendrick for DuPage Sheriff; Frank Bibbianno for DuPage Sheriff; Karen Wilson for DuPage Judge; and the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC). Republicans who walked with entries included Ron Almiron, Lori Carlson, Joseph Caruso, Flo Dangelo, Sal Falbo, Chris Heidorn, Pat Hinchey, Marty Keller, Larry LaVanway, Antonio Lollino, Paula McGowen, Ron Menna, David Norck, Thommen Poozhikunnel, Mary Rash, Pat Ryan, and Janet Shaw. Gary Muehlfelt drove the truck that pulled the outstanding MTRCC float. Peter Breen, Mike Connelly, and Jeanne Ives could not participate in the parade because of the Democrats. Peter Roskam participated in a different parade. This year, for the 12th year in a row, “DuPage Republicans” helped sponsor the parade and fireworks. “DuPage Republicans” was the $2,500 “Star” sponsor again sponsored the Wheaton high school bands and the Tunes of Glory Pipes and Drums parade entries. Because of a last minute shortage of banner carriers, I had the honor of helping carry the “Sponsored by DuPage Republicans” banner ahead of the Tunes of Glory Pipes and Drums. Outstandingly, again this year Tim Whelan coordinated Republican use of the “DuPage Republicans” booth at the fireworks. This year again, I delivered flyers to the residences and businesses on the parade route. The flyers listed the Republican entries in the parade and the Republicans who helped sponsor entries. Outstandingly, the flyers were printed courtesy of Alpha Graphics. This year, outstandingly, Roger Claar is a $500 contributor, Chris Nybo is a $250 contributor, Phil Suess is a $150 contributor, and Bob Berlin, Peter Breen, Mike Connelly, Grant Eckhoff, Tim Elliott, Amy Grant, Gwen Henry, Paul Hinds, Jeanne Ives, Marty Keller, Deanne Mazzochi, Paula McGowen, James Mendrick, Peter Roskam, Darlene Ruscitti, and Tim Whelan are $100 contributors. Please thank them for helping sponsor the parade and fireworks. This year was the 10th anniversary of an elephant walking behind Roskam in the parade. For that 2007 parade, I had the honor of raising $2,000 on short notice from DuPage Republicans to sponsor that elephant. – Dave Diersen

— Does Rauner Support Trump Commuting Blagojevich’s 14-Year Sentence? – BRIAN MACKEY (DIERSEN: Does Rauner support Trump commuting my sentence? Being forced to take early retirement is a major adverse employment action. If you have been forced to take early retirement, you know how devastating it is. Constructively, since 1997, when I was 49 years old, the Democrats who run GAO have had the Civil Service Retirement System pay me $1,076,178 in today’s dollars to not come to work. Prior to that, they gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.)

NORTH COOK NEWS
— Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee member Charlene Foss-Eggemann says grassroots involvement is key to November gubernatorial win – Robert Hadley (DIERSEN: Tragically, from what I see, the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) is divided between “Group A” individuals, organizations, and companies that want to dump voters who support the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and many other planks in the IRP platform and Group B individuals, organizations, and companies who support the IRP platform. Those in Group A voted for Rauner and those in Group B voted for Ives.)
https://northcooknews.com/stories/511445366-gop-committee-member-says-grassroots-involvement-is-key-to-november-gubernatorial-win
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Elected to represent Illinois’ Ninth Congressional District, Foss-Eggemann is positioning herself as a grassroots volunteer who is intent on providing a conservative voice from her district at the state level. “I will work to unify the Republican Party before we head into another tough gubernatorial election cycle,” she told the North Cook News. “I will also work toward facilitating the development of party volunteers, protecting the conservative planks of the party platform, bolstering our statewide fundraising efforts and improving the quality of our voter data.” But if she is sounding a somewhat conciliatory note, it may be because the party seems to have divided loyalties. Rauner, who won the primary by a scant 22,000-vote margin, faced opposition stirred up from “grassroots anger over [his] more liberal positions,” according to a May 19 piece in the State Journal-Register. However, that same report said that Tim Schneider, a member of Rauner’s camp, had won another term as chairman of the Illinois GOP, an indication that the party’s cracks—if there were any—are healing. “It’s important to note, however, that robust competition and debate is a cornerstone of our party’s principles,” Foss-Eggemann stated. “So I would not characterize a race as ‘division.’” But with a tough battle against Pritzker ahead, Foss-Eggemann is realistic about what it may take to keep the governor’s office in the GOP column. “We need to run with the opportunity and make the most of what we have,” she said. “We must all raise our game to make everyone feel welcome and do even more to engage and train grassroots volunteers. If we do these things, we win.”)

My age cohort was in school during the 1940s. Baby boomers approaching their 70s were in school during the 1950s and early ’60s. Try this question to any one of those 50 million Americans who are 65 or older: Do you recall any discussions about the need to hire armed guards to protect students and teachers against school shootings? Do you remember school policemen patrolling the hallways? How many students were shot to death during the time you were in school? For me and those other Americans 65 or older, when we were in school, a conversation about hiring armed guards and having police patrol hallways would have been seen as lunacy. There was no reason.)

While I attended Crete-Monee High School 1962-1966, I took college preparatory courses notwithstanding the fact that many, if not most, if not virtually everyone at the time viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the upper 20% of my class, my ACT score was only 24, I was draft bait, my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease).)

— Rauner To Consider Bill Applying Human Rights Act To Small Businesses – MAUREEN FOERTSCH MCKINNEY (DIERSEN: Have ever worked for an employer who had 15 or fewer employees? During my entire life, I worked for an employer who had 15 or fewer employees for only about 2 months in 1966.)
http://nprillinois.org/post/rauner-consider-bill-applying-human-rights-act-small-businesses#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A measure awaiting Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature would expand protections in the Human Rights Act to cover workers at businesses with 15 or fewer employees. . . “The deal is that right now in most parts of the state of Illinois discrimination in the workplace is perfectly legal as long as there are 15 employees or fewer in that workplace. I wanted to address that problem to remedy that problem to make sure that discrimination was illegal in every workplace everywhere.)

  1. LOUIS POST DISPATCH
    — Illinois tamps down ‘pension spiking’ for teachers; educators fear disincentive for hiring – Kevin McDermott (DIERSEN: Have you benefited from a pension spike? My critics/opponents would say that I did. They would say that the only reason why my Democrat GAO superiors promoted me to GS-13 in 1986 and gave step increases in subsequent years was to get my “high 3” salary, and therefore my pension, high enough that I would cave in and take their a) early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old if not b) their $25,000 buyout “offer” in 1993 when I was 45 years old.)
    http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/illinois-tamps-down-pension-spiking-for-teachers-educators-fear-disincentive/article_7855c184-c2a4-52cc-805e-97d4025adc86.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Currently, the often notoriously low pay of Illinois teachers is offset by an end-of-career perk: In the teachers’ final years of employment, school districts routinely hike their salaries to boost their post-retirement pensions, which are paid mostly by the state. Under current law, districts can offer up to 6 percent per year in raises for the final four years of a teacher’s career without incurring extra pension costs for the district.)

https://www.fedsmith.com/2018/06/05/whos-blame-will-feds-culpable-lower-income-lost-benefits/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What Can Feds Do? Federal employees can unify and rally against not only the design but the proposed actions with one dominant and cohesive voice. Contact elected officials as Tom has started doing. Elected officials and political parties’ points of view can be swayed and even transformed by substantial and persistent outcries. NARFE has an impressive resume of fighting for and successfully protecting federal income and benefits over several decades, but their numbers aren’t what they used to be. Federal employees concerned about and wishing to preserve their own personal incomes and benefits may well want to check into joining NARFE and other groups defending them. It appears obvious: take action or take what others decide you deserve. If changes come and Federal Employees do not unite against it, they will have no one to blame but themselves.)

— Fatalities linked to ‘drugged’ driving keep rising – Mary Wisniewski
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-biz-drugged-driving-20180530-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A growing percentage of drivers who die in road crashes test positive for drugs, and states need to do a better job of educating the general public and law enforcement on the risks of driving while on marijuana, opioids and other substances, according to a new report. The Governors Highway Safety Association, a national nonprofit safety group, said in a report released Thursday that almost 44 percent of fatally injured drivers tested positive for drugs in 2016, the most recent year available, up from almost 28 percent in 2006. Meanwhile, the percentage of drivers killed in crashes who tested positive for alcohol dropped slightly to 38 percent in 2016 compared with 41 percent in 2006, the study found. Drunken driving has become socially unacceptable, and the same thing needs to happen with other substances, said Jim Hedlund, a former National Highway Traffic Safety Administration official who wrote the report. “The message has been out on drunk driving for 40 years now, and people have paid attention,” Hedlund said. “There’s a real social change that says it’s not acceptable to have two six-packs and go out and drive. The slogan years ago was: ‘Let’s have one for road.’ Now it’s: ‘Who’s the designated driver?’ I’d like to see the same thing for drugs.” A mix of substances were also found among drivers killed in fatal crashes. When test results for both alcohol and drugs were known, 49 percent of alcohol-positive drivers also had drugs in their systems. The report points to the challenges in tackling drug-impaired driving, including a lack of nationally accepted testing methods for drug impairment, the large number of drugs to test for and differences in effects between different drugs and drivers.)

My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. Orders – Dick Morris (DIERSEN: Because my Democrat superiors in the federal government took many adverse actions against me, including forced me to retire, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that I am much worse than those who “have been caught stealing agency property or running personal businesses from work, and even after they have been arrested for using drugs during lunch breaks.”)
https://www.westernjournal.com/dick-morris-trump-flushes-out-swamp-with-civil-service-exec-orders/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: And most importantly, the standards for dismissing, removing or demoting public employees are going to be changed to make these procedures easier. It now takes between six months and a year to remove a tenured federal employee for poor performance and an additional eight months to handle appeals. That makes tenured federal employees forty-four times less likely to get laid off than workers in the private sector. Under this flawed system, federal employees have stayed on the job after they have been caught stealing agency property or running personal businesses from work, and even after they have been arrested for using drugs during lunch breaks. These people need to go. But there is one more step Trump must take: banning IRS labor unions. We do not permit employees of the FBI, CIA, NSA or other such agencies to form or join unions. IRS employees, however, belong to the all-powerful Treasury Employees Union, whose contract grants them a substantial role in the management of this all-powerful agency.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-equal-rights-amendment-illinois-20180530-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Opponents largely contended the measure was aimed at ensuring an expansion of abortion rights for women. Supporters said it was needed to give women equal standing in the nation’s founding document. Opponents also contended the measure may be moot, since it’s original 1982 ratification deadline has long since expired. Supporters argued, however, that the ratification of the 1789 “Madison Amendment” preventing mid-term changes in congressional pay, in 1992 makes the ERA a legally viable change to the constitution. State Rep. Peter Breen of Lombard, an abortion rights opponent, called the measure “an alleged constitutional amendment” and warned it would be adopting an “illegal act.” But Breen also contended supporters “have no other thing they want to do” than expand abortion rights. “It will expand taxpayer funding of abortions, very well might rollback our parental notice (for minors to have an abortion) law and have other negative impacts on various abortion regulations,” Breen said.)

https://capitolfax.com/2018/05/30/equal-rights-amendment-passes-with-help-from-durkin/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a surprising move, House GOP Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) helped give the Equal Rights Amendment the extra boost needed to pass the House. Durkin is a pro-life Catholic, and one of the loudest arguments against the ERA is it will open the door for more abortions. Earlier today Rep. Silvana Tabares (D-Chicago) had an excused absence, and everyone I asked had no idea what was going to happen with the Equal Rights Amendment. Then just before 6 p.m., Lou Lang introduced the ERA. If you heard psychotic clacking down the hallway in the Capitol basement, that was me running for the elevator. Two hours of debate later, it passed. Here’s the roll call. http://www.breitbart.com/2018-elections/2018/05/30/report-summer-hiring-raising-hourly-wages/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The report also noted that more employers are using the federal E-Verify system to screen illegal immigrants from jobs. The survey said that “nearly 40 percent of employers plan to use E-Verify to evaluate summer applicants, up from 25 percent last year.” “Given the current political environment and noise around immigration and non-citizenship status, employers are clearly being more cautious,” said Snag CEO Peter Harrison. The survey’s data suggests that millions of American voters are going to get pay raises during the summer before the election because of President Donald Trump’s lower-immigration/higher-wage policies.)

Between 2010 and 2016, the city of Chicago gained more households in a key category—total income of more than $100,000 with the head of household under age 45—than any city in the country except for far larger New York, according to newly analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data. Specifically, the number of such households here grew from just under 105,000 to an estimated 131,000, according to the American Community Survey data. That increase of 26,000 led Houston (24,000), San Francisco (23,000), Washington, D.C. (19,000) and Los Angeles (16,000). And while on a percentage basis that demographic grew faster in San Francisco than in Chicago (57 percent versus 27 percent), the Windy City outpaced cities such as Houston and L.A. and tied red-hot Denver.)

FOX NEWS
— ‘Ingraham Angle’ Highlights Passages From Starbucks’ Racial Bias Handbook
http://insider.foxnews.com/2018/05/30/ingraham-angle-highlights-passages-starbucks-racial-bias-handbook
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Laura Ingraham highlighted some of the passages in the racial bias handbook handed out to employees in the training sessions. She said a Starbucks employee she spoke to on Tuesday pointed out that several black and Hispanic workers were “laughing through the book.” The book lays out so-called “Ground Rules,” including “honor[ing] other people’s truth.” Another section of the manual asked employees to recall when they first noticed their racial identity. Another asked employees about going “to work with your natural hair.” Fox News contributor Gianno Caldwell said the training sessions are all about protecting Starbucks’ bottom line, since some African-Americans vowed to boycott Starbucks after the April arrests. Democratic strategist Michael Starr Hopkins said he appreciates what the company did, arguing “far too often in this country we’re afraid to talk about race.”)

— Silicon Valley is stumped: Even A.I. cannot always remove bias from hiring AI software to eliminate the prejudice of human hiring managers has produced encouraging early results at corporations. But tech executives with experience at Google, Microsoft and Facebook say the algorithmic revolution in hiring is moving too fast. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/business/wp/2018/05/30/walmart-to-offer-employees-a-college-education-for-1-a-day/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Walmart, the country’s largest private employer, announced Wednesday that it will pay for its workers to go back to school — as long as they get degrees in business or supply-chain management. The retailer is partnering with three universities to offer associate’s and bachelor’s degrees to 1.4 million part-time, full-time and salaried Walmart and Sam’s Club employees — a pitch to improve employee retention rates and engagement at work, while also drawing new workers. Walmart will cover the costs of tuition, books and fees, while employees will be required to pay $1 a day for the duration of their studies. “We know there [are] a lot of benefits from a business perspective,” Drew Holler, vice president of people innovation for Walmart U.S., said on a call with reporters. “We know we’re going to see an influx of applications.” Degrees will be offered by the University of Florida in Gainesville, Brandman University in Irvine, Calif., and Bellevue University in Bellevue, Neb., all nonprofit institutions with online programs for working adults. Rachel Carlson, chief executive of Guild Education, a Denver-based company that will oversee the program, pointed out that the program allows employees to earn a degree without amassing college debt.)
