Success Peer Pressure – Children raised in wealthy households are expected to go to college and sometimes graduate school. In the minds of their wealthy parents, this tees their kids up to find better, higher-paying jobs, upon graduation. Envision runs day and employment programming for IDD adults who have aged out of the state system. For example, the AICPA’s 2021 Trends report notes that in 2020 a mere 2% of qualified CPAs and partners were Black in the United States, while a mere 5% Latino/Hispanic were partners and CPAs. (Note that the 2023 report is available but does not breakdown analysis into qualified CPAs by race. The opening paragraph infers that this might be due to a poor response rate. Going back further, the 2015 AICPA Trends Report noted that new accounting Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates hired by CPA firms by race and ethnicity from 2000–2014 was 3% for Blacks/African Americans and Hispanic/Latino accountants. This is a long-standing problem: Theresa Hammond, a noted historian of the African American accountant, has pointed out that in 1997 less than 1% of CPAs were Black. They gave me bad job assignments and unfair performance expectations and appraisals. They assigned me to supervise their most problematic employees. They delayed my promotions and never promoted me beyond GS-13. They always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes. They forced me to take their early retirement “offer” when I was 49 in 1997. All my coworkers who they promoted over me were Democrats who were minority, female, younger than me, and/or veteran and who had less work experience than I had, had less education than I had, had no professional certifications or fewer than I had, and/or had no professional license like the one I had.
