If I had not had a 1970 bachelor’s degree in management from NIU, a) Firestone Stores would not have offered me a job in 1970 and b) Oldsmobile and the Democrats who ran IRS would not have offered me jobs in 1971. If I had not been taking graduate business courses, the Democrats who ran IRS might not have promoted me 1972, 1973, and 1974. If I had not had a 1976 MBA from Loyola and if I had not been taking graduate accounting courses at DePaul, the Democrats who ran GAO would not have offered me a job in 1980 and would not have promoted me in 1986. If I had not been taking graduate courses in financial markets and trading at IIT, my Democrat who ran GAO might have forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1993 instead of 1997.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171030/NEWS04/171039997/retired-federal-judge-posner-launching-pro-bono-project
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A prominent retired judge is launching a pro bono law firm to help people who face court battles but don’t want or can’t afford lawyers. Richard Posner told the Law360 news service that several lawyers already signed up. He says he’ll fund the project himself, partly drawing on a $217,000 salary he’ll keep getting in retirement. The 78-year-old gained fame for his intellectually rigorous but sometimes off-beat opinions on Chicago’s 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Appointed in 1981, Posner abruptly retired in September, citing clashes with fellow judges over what Posner considered unfair treatment of those acting as their own attorneys.)

FRONTPAGE MAGAZINE
— DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE: IT’S REAL As real as the discrimination against black people was under segregation. – Daniel Greenfield (DIERSEN: Democrats use Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion to get rid of Republicans, and especially Republicans who are White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/268256/discrimination-against-white-people-its-real-daniel-greenfield
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The release of an NPR poll in which a majority of white people (55%) answered that they face racial discrimination was treated with the media’s usual cocktail of condescension, disbelief and contempt. But it’s not up for debate. Racial discrimination against white people today is as real as the discrimination against black people was under segregation. We can talk about subjective experiences and do statistical correlations about differential outcomes until the cows come home. And that’s what most talk about racism is these days. That and emotional outbursts, cries of, “Hands up, don’t shoot” and “I can’t breathe”. But only one racial group in America is subject to a system of codes, regulations and laws discriminating against members of its race when it comes to employment and education. Affirmative action is an inescapably real and racist as segregated water fountains. Affirmative action is racial discrimination, not as a matter of opinion, but as a hard objective fact. Racial preferences reward and punish people based on their race. These preferences, no matter how they are disguised, pervade not just one region, the way that segregation did, but much of the country. Diversity is a mandate on campuses and in corporations across the country. And it’s the very definition of racism.)

October 30 Morning Edition

HERALD EXTRA
— OCTOBER 3, 2017 FLASHBACK: Your local newspaper: The real deal – JIM ZACHARY (DIERSEN: What do you say to activists, to candidates, to campaign managers, to elected officials, to party leaders, to major donors, and to political consultants in Illinois who state that they are conservative and/or Republican, but who fail/refuse to keep
diersen@aol.com on their press advisory and press release lists? I have served as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000. Since 2004, I have sent out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails each and every morning, and since 2015, each and every evening too. Those emails have included links to almost 285,600 articles and information on many upcoming Republican events. What do you say to those who “punish” me by not sending me their press advisories and press releases a) because I refuse to serve as one or their operatives or dupes, b) because I refuse to carry out their backlist orders, c) because I have included links in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails to articles that they do not like, d) because I have failed/refused to give them money, e) because they blame me for their problems, for your problems, for my problems, and for everyone’s problems, f) because I am “too conservative,” g) because they want to curry favor with my competitors, Rich Miller, and/or the rest of the Democrat news media in Illinois, and/or h) because they focus on destroying individuals like me, organizations like TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, companies, and governments that they cannot manipulate/dominate? They do not want me a) to know about or promote their public events and other public activities, b) to attend their events, and c) to report on their public events and other activities. They do not want anyone to first learn of anything by reading GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. They want you to only know what they want you to know. They paint me as being illegitimate if not worse things a) because I sent out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails free of charge, b) because the emails do not contain any advertising, c) because no one pays me for what I do as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor, d) because I do not have a college degree in journalism, and/or e) because I state that I am conservative and Republican. They proudly paint themselves as being anti-Diersen. They do not return my phone calls. They read my emails for “opposition research.” Should I publish a list of the aforesaid punishers? Some of them, if not many of them, talk and act like they want me to do that.)
http://www.heraldextra.com/news/opinion/national-editorials/commentary-your-local-newspaper-the-real-deal/article_d1295fef-ca14-5903-bc68-f82c03845a6a.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a world of fake news spread on social media and attacks on the media from people in power, it is important for the public to know the difference between legitimate reporting by credible sources and all the noise posing as “the media.” Here are some reasons your local newspaper is the most trustworthy source for news and information: — Newspaper newsrooms are staffed with real people — people you know — reporters, photographers, editors — gathering the news, conducting interviews, covering meetings, attending events, writing, editing, fact-checking and making sure every day you can trust what you read. — Newspapers rely on recognizable sources. Quotes in the articles you read are attributed to real people and can be easily verified. — Newspapers work hard to stay away from single source reporting, giving readers context and balance. — Newspaper websites have legitimate URLs ending in .com or .org extensions, listing contact information, the names of staff members and the media organization’s leadership team on the website. — Newspapers correct mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes at times, but there is a big difference between an error and intentionally and knowingly publishing a false report because of some political or social agenda. Spurious websites, blogs and social media do not correct errors. They thrive on them. In the United States newspapers have a long and important legacy of holding the powerful accountable, defending the First Amendment and advocating for government transparency. Democracy is protected when the newspaper provides checks and balances as the Fourth Estate of government from city hall to the courthouse to the statehouse to the White House. Newspapers are committed to the neighborhoods, cities, counties, states and coverage areas they serve. Straightforward news reporting and thought-provoking commentary give a voice to the voiceless and empower the powerless. Newspapers hold government accountable because at our very core we believe that government belongs to the governed and not to the governing. Don’t be embarrassed because you shared some sensational, agenda-driven report on social media only to find out it is totally fake. Get your news where real news has always been found: Your local newspaper, the real deal.)

— Why it’s easier to concentrate in a coffee shop than an open office – Geoffrey James (DIERSEN: In 1990, GAO moved to new office space in a new building – 200 West Adams in Chicago. I got a preferred corner office because a) I had been promoted to GS-13 in 1986 and b) I had more federal seniority because I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years and I had worked for the Post Office for almost 3 years. Needless-to-say, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were beyond furious.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-wilhelm-trump-anniversary-scream-sky-1030-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On n Nov. 8, it’s anticipated that thousands of Americans in at least nine cities will take to the streets to “scream helplessly at the sky.” You can probably guess the reason: It’s to mark the one-year anniversary of the election of Donald Trump as president. Can you believe it’s almost been a year since the election? Time flies when everyone seems to be losing their minds! Here’s the good news: If you’re reading this, you’re still alive. The stock market seems downright giddy — knock on wood, at least for now — and despite our president’s occasionally baffling and sometimes alarming tweets, our country is apparently still free enough for people to get on Facebook and organize cross-country protests that involve shouting at clouds.)
— Make it worth their time Young professionals need to follow 3 rules to impress executives – Mary Rezek (DIERSEN: Non-veteran White males who are seeking a job with the federal government should be advised that with only rare exceptions, your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of if you do not make GS-13 (currently $94,610) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $111,801) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $161,900) by age 40. To impress your Democrat supervisors and your Democrat superiors, you need to impress them that a) you can and will help them get rid of their employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and b) that can and will serve as their operative or dupe.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— MARCH 18, 2002 FLASHBACK: Animosity High in Both Parties In Illinois Governor Primaries – AP (DIERSEN: Who do you blame for your losses? My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes continue to blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for all losses that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000, but especially Jim Ryan’s loss to Blagojevich in the 2002 general election. Of course, if a Democrat becomes the next governor of Illinois, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes will blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for that.)
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/03/18/us/animosity-high-in-both-parties-in-illinois-governor-primaries.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Republicans, facing their first real contested primary in decades, have worked to distance themselves from the governor’s problems. The two other Republican candidates, State Senator Patrick O’Malley and Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood, accused Jim Ryan of knowing about the bribery scheme but refusing to use his power as attorney general to stop it. The attorney general maintains that it would have been irresponsible for him to get involved in a federal investigation. Recent polls have shown Jim Ryan with about 50 percent of the vote. . .Among the Republican candidates, Ms. Wood ran advertisements calling Mr. Ryan and Mr. O’Malley “too extreme” because they oppose abortion even in cases of rape and incest. Ms. Wood is also courting Democrats and liberal groups to cross over to the Republican primary and vote for her.)

— How America deals with Hate Speech – James Kirk Wall
http://www.chicagonow.com/an-atheist-in-illinois/2017/10/how-america-deals-with-hate-speech/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 1995 the KKK came to Wheaton, IL Wheaton is a Western suburb of Chicago next to Naperville. In 1995 the Ku Klux Klan legally obtained a permit to demonstrate in the county court house. So what do you do when this happens in your town? An organization of hate and ignorance which has historically caused great suffering to a great number of people. This is how it was handled in Wheaton. Citizens of Mexican heritage organized a 26-piece mariachi band to perform on the common grounds. There were also protestors. If you came to this event you could stand with the protestors and chant, “Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! KKK has got to go!” Or you could hang out with the band and do a little La Bamba. The best case scenario for a KKK rally is that nobody shows up. Having not that many people there and a mariachi band wasn’t a bad response. That organization hasn’t been back to Wheaton since. There was a police presence to keep the peace. To make sure people were protected from harmful actions, not offensive words.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Ives mounts challenge to Rauner in Republican primary
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511256258-ives-mounts-challenge-to-rauner-in-republican-primary
(FROM THE ARTICLE: After weeks of speculation, State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) has decided to take a concrete step towards challenging incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. Ives stopped short of announcing her candidacy but said she will circulate petitions in pursuit of the required signatures to appear on the March 20 primary ballot while she continues contemplating the decision to run. “Today my team and I are taking the first step toward restoring common sense in Illinois,” Ives said. “I have started circulating petitions to get on the ballot as governor of Illinois.” Ives’ announcement comes in the wake of withering support of Rauner, who has lost a growing list of allies in the conservative community after signing into law HB40, which forces Illinois taxpayers to fund abortions during all nine months of pregnancy. Rauner had earlier he would veto the bill, and his reversal led to an open revolt within the Illinois Republican Party leading many local party organizations to withdraw invitation by Rauner to speak and refuse to circulate his petitions. “There is little trust between most Illinoisans and their government at many levels — and for good reasons,“ Ives said. “Top political leaders have lied to the people about who they are and what they are going to do, and they continue to make promises we cannot keep.” In addition, Rauner has been roundly criticized for signing a so called “sanctuary state” bill that limits cooperation between the state and federal authorities in matters involving the deportation of illegal immigrants, signing legislation that allows persons to change their listed gender on their birth certificates and for authorizing a 15 percent premium increase on Obamacare silver health insurance plans in order to prop up Medicaid expansion under Obamacare. As a member of the General Assembly, Ives has focused much of her efforts on government transparency. “Public corruption is an everyday event across the state,” she said. “Many Illinoisans have simply decided to leave for better opportunities elsewhere.” Ives’ tenure has also been marked by her pursuit of tax reform, term limits and school choice. Rock Island-based former state representative and community college Prof. Rich Morthland will be Ives’ running mate. “Rich and I know, however, that if you change out the politicians and tell people the truth, then the reform can begin,” Ives said. “And Illinois can recover. Our promise to you is to be honest about the problems we face and the path we must take to make Illinois a place where businesses and families can thrive. We will confront and expose public corruption at every level of government until it stops.” Ives, the mother of five, is a West Point graduate and former Army officer who has represented the 42nd House District since 2013. She formerly served on the Wheaton City Council and was an ROTC instructor at Wheaton College. Chicago GOP Chairman Chris Cleveland will serve as the chairman of the Ives for Illinois campaign. Petitions for Ives’ candidacy are available here (https://jnswire.s3.amazonaws.com/jns-media/cc/64/715668/ivescirculation.pdf). Candidates for state office in Illinois must file their candidacy paperwork by December 4.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— IVES ANNOUNCES VIA EMAIL
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/10/ives-announces-via-email.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives is in to challenge incumbent Governor Bruce Rauner, according to an email sent out Saturday afternoon … From: Jeanne Ives <jeanneives@yahoo.com> Date: Sat, Oct 28, 2017 at 1:21 PM Subject: Ives for Illinois To: Dear Friends, Today my team and I are taking the first step towards restoring commonsense in Illinois. I have started circulating petitions to place my name on the ballot for Governor of Illinois. I have selected as my Lt. Governor Rich Morthland, a farmer, former state representative and community college professor from the Rock Island area. There is little trust between most Illinoisans and their government at many levels – and for good reasons. Top political leaders have lied to the people about who they are and what they are going to do – and they continue to make promises we cannot keep. Public corruption is an everyday event across the state. Many Illinoisans have simply decided to leave for better opportunities elsewhere. Rich and I know, however, that if you change out the politicians, replacing them with public servants, and tell people the truth, then reform can begin. Illinois can and must recover. Our promise to you is to be honest about the problems we face and the path we must take to make Illinois a place where businesses and families can thrive again. We will confront and expose public corruption at every level of government until it stops. I am most thankful that my team includes Chris Cleveland. He will serve as the Chairman of the Ives for Illinois campaign. Chris was among the first to encourage me to enter this race and has been a key advisor to me on a daily basis. His position as the current Chicago GOP chairman shows the broad base of support this campaign already has. We need your help to get on the ballot. Our petition is attached along with the instructions. Please read through the instructions prior to circulating. In advance, I give my sincere thanks to all for your support and work that is ahead of us. Best Regards, Jeanne)

Radio talk show host and Illinois Opportunity Project head Dan Proft’s Prairie State Wire exclusively revealed the petitions Saturday morning. SPRINGFIELD – Who is State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton)? Why is her name in a buzz about challenging Republican Governor Bruce Rauner in next March’s IL GOP Primary? Illinois Channel’s Terry Martin offers this first in-depth interview from a non-Rauner funded news source that provides a one on one insight into Ives’ thinking about the need for a viable conservative candidate in 2018. While reports say she’s out fundraising to reach a $1 million goal to launch the campaign, she’s also picking her running mate as Illinois law requires gubernatorial candidates to run as a team with their lieutenants. UPDATE: The Ives petitions are now online (https://jnswire.s3.amazonaws.com/jns-media/cc/64/715668/ivescirculation.pdf) and her running mate is former State Rep. Rich Morthland. Before today, we were hearing the top two choices for her LG are Quincy state rep Randy Frese and Chicago businessman and the city’s GOP Chairman Chris Cleveland.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-jeanne-ives-bruce-rauner-primary-20171028-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ives said she does not plan on making a formal candidacy announcement until securing the signatures needed to appear on the March 20 primary ballot. Candidates for governor need a minimum of 5,000 valid signatures by Dec. 4 to qualify. “We are doing everything possible to get on the ballot. I would say nobody’s running until they’re on the ballot. We’ve got catch-up work to do here so we’ve got to put out the petitions and get the signatures. When we’ve got that done, we can officially announce,” Ives said. “We know that we’re behind the curveball here to some degree in that we’ve only got about a month to put it all together,” she said. Responding to the move, Rauner’s campaign issued a statement that did not mention Ives and focused on the governor’s favorite political target, Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. . .She said the commitments she has received so far are enough to get started with a campaign. “Obviously that’s a big issue. To get your message out, you’ve got to have the money behind you,” she said. “Unless you can self-fund like the other billionaires in the race, (raising money is) an ongoing process for any candidate. We’re not intimidated by it either.” Ives said she selected Morthland, an associate professor at Black Hawk College, as her lieutenant governor candidate because he “also represents Illinois.” “He’s a farmer. He comes from an area that’s outside the suburban area. He’s somebody who is recognized for having been elected before and he’s a professional also as a community college teacher,” she said.)

The precinct committeeman helps shape party policy and participates in the selection process of candidates. A precinct committeeman is elected to a two-year term in the even-year primary elections. In our PC orientation, we cover exactly how you can *Represent the party’s voters at the county central committee convention to elect the county central chairman and its officers. The precinct committeeman casts a total number of party votes, (weighted vote), as cast in the precinct at the recent primary election *Become a voter registrar and register all qualified constituents *Appoint and fill vacancies of election judges for the precinct polling place *Provide candidate and election information to the voters *Circulate petitions for candidates prior to the primary election *Become familiar with the elected officials and legislatures so the concerns of the voters can be passed on to them. *Attend and become involved in the party’s Township meetings in one of the nine townships in which you live)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— CHICAGO GOP CHAIRMAN CHRIS CLEVELAND STANDS UP TO RAUNER’S BULLYING TACTICS (FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s past time for the state central committee to step in and right the ship. First, I ask that you prevail upon Bruce Rauner to stop the petty retribution. This is the Republican Party, not the mob, and it’s time for them to grow up. Second, I ask that you consider separating the state party apparatus from the Rauner campaign.)
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/10/chicago-gop-chairman-stands-up-to-rauners-bullying-tactics.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Chris Cleveland, chairman of the Chicago GOP and a conservative leader in the party, wrote to the IL GOP’s State Central Committee this week, expressing the frustrations the conservative base is having with the party’s direction and Governor Rauner’s bullying tactics within the party ranks. “State Central Committee member, I’m writing to alert you to a problem with the Rauner campaign’s use of state party resources, and to problems within the state party generally. A few days ago, a Chicago GOP staffer was informed that he could no longer use a desk within state party headquarters. We had put him there a few days a week so we could coordinate our activities with the state party. In the past, the city GOP has frequently supplied volunteers for state party-backed candidates. The reason they offered was a press report that I was under consideration as Rep. Jeanne Ives running mate. (Jeanne and I have talked, but as of this moment she has not yet made a final decision, and she has a number of very good candidates to choose from.) Subsequently, the state party cut off our GOPDataCenter access. Consider what has happened here: the Rauner campaign has ordered the state party to cut off an elected, regular Republican organization, based purely on the rumor that the head of the organization *might* be working with a candidate in a primary against him. To the best of my knowledge, the state central committee has neither endorsed nor slated Bruce Rauner. And given the widespread doubt within the Republican Party over his policy choices and his ability to execute, it seems to me that some dissent is warranted. But whether you love him or hate him, this behavior is abusive, and the state central committee should not stand for it. Our difficulties with the state party go beyond this recent behavior. It has long been the position of senior staffers in the state party that the Chicago GOP should not be running candidates in the city. The theory is that this just “activates” the other side and reminds them that there is an election. We in the Chicago GOP have rejected this position, and believe that a vigorous attack in the belly of the beast has many benefits. While the Chicago GOP is a small organization, and Chicago is often derided as a Democratic bastion, the number of Republican voters here is not small. We cover 7.5% of the Republican voters in the state, more than any county except Cook and DuPage, with 20,000 more voters than the next largest county, Lake. You ignore this constituency at your peril. Four years ago, we ran candidates across the city for the purpose of generating enthusiasm and volunteers for phone calls and door knocks. In close coordination with the Rauner campaign, we flooded their offices with volunteers and executed 363,000 voter contacts, 263,000 of which were door knocks. We were able to raise Rauner’s vote in Chicago to 20.63%, just a hair above the magic 20% threshold. And he won. If Rauner is on the ballot this fall, this won’t happen. Not because we wouldn’t want to; we’re loyal Republicans and Rauner over Pritzker would be an easy choice. It won’t happen because the state party has consistently undermined our efforts to recruit here, and because there is zero enthusiasm for this governor. Even prior to HB 40, we couldn’t get people to sign his petition. It’s past time for the state central committee to step in and right the ship. First, I ask that you prevail upon Bruce Rauner to stop the petty retribution. This is the Republican Party, not the mob, and it’s time for them to grow up. Second, I ask that you consider separating the state party apparatus from the Rauner campaign. They are acting as one and the same, but our party is bigger than Bruce, and we have broader concerns than his personal well-being. Notably, we need to take back the House, and we have two very viable candidates for state rep in Chicago, both of whom *might actually win*. A party must support such activities. I am open to discussing this matter with any of you individually. Chris Cleveland Chairman, Chicago Republican Party)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Rauner calls transparency bill ‘political manipulation,’ angering GOP – Tina Sfondeles
https://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-politics/rauner-calls-transparency-bill-political-manipulation-angering-gop/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many lawmakers saw those comments as a sour grapes response to the override, which passed with a 112-0 vote on Wednesday. It was also seen as a strange comment as the governor continues to try to gain back the support of Republican lawmakers after many criticized him for signing a bill to expand taxpayer-funding of abortions. The override was one of nearly a dozen the Illinois House delivered to the governor this week. He did score a major victory, however, in the failed override of a bill that would have prohibited local municipalities from enacting “right-to-work” zones. State Rep. Allen Skillicorn, R-East Dundee, said he was happy to co-sponsor the debt transparency legislation and asked Republican colleagues to unanimously support the override. “It was the right thing to do. #thatsleadership,” Skillicorn tweeted. Others had stronger words for the governor’s backlash. “This is another example of failed Governor Rauner’s alternate reality,” State Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, said. “The governor lost 112-0 on the override — no Republicans voted against the override.” McSweeney said the measure will allow lawmakers and the public to know just how much the state owes, including $2.8 billion in unappropriated bills, which was detailed in a bond offering submitted by the governor’s office and the state’s budget office. “The real question is what did the governor know about the hidden bills and when did he know it?” McSweeney said. Mendoza’s office said the unanimous vote shows the measure represented good policy. “That vote — 112-0 — every single Republican voting with every single Democrat, that ends the discussion over whether this is good policy or politics,” Mendoza spokesman Abdon Pallasch said. “Madigan did not hypnotize [Republicans] David McSweeney and Jeanne Ives to vote for the bill? No. it’s just good policy and the legislators could see which side was telling the truth on this one.” The governor, though, said he is a “strong advocate for transparency” while bringing up a months old feud with Mendoza about IT upgrades.)

— Let’s Agree: Racial Affirmative Action Failed And college admissions offices should reveal the true secret sauce (not test scores) for getting in. – John Katzman and Steve Cohen (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that minorities should have been admitted instead of me a) by UIC in 1966, b) by NIU in 1969, c) by Loyola in 1972, d) by DePaul in 1976, e) by Roosevelt in 1980, and f) by IIT in 1992.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/lets-agree-racial-affirmative-action-failed-1509058963
(FROM THE ARTICLE: We disagree in principle about affirmative action. One of us, a frequent fundraiser for Democratic candidates, believes that it’s better for colleges to have a diverse student body that more faithfully reflects the nation; and that we need to counterbalance the impact of poverty on education and opportunity, which often means giving special consideration to minority students. The other, a former Reagan staffer, believes consideration of race is intrinsically unfair and hinders race relations. But we agree that race-based affirmative action hasn’t worked. Because of how it has played out in practical terms, it’s time for colleges to shift the policy from being based on race to income. Affirmative action’s original intent was to incorporate more minority students, specifically blacks and Hispanics, into elite universities. But blacks and Hispanics have actually lost ground in the admissions race over the past 25 years, as recently reported by the New York Times . And while the original policy was intended to help minorities, Asian-American students feel they are taking the biggest hit. As a result, many have filed lawsuits against Ivy League schools such as Harvard, claiming that to gain admission, Asian-American students, on average, have to score 140 points higher on the SAT than white students, 270 points higher than Hispanic students, and 450 points higher than African-American students.)

GOVERNING
— Since Trump Took Office, State Democrats’ Chances Have Improved for 2018 The GOP holds the majority of governorships, but the number of those vulnerable next year has doubled. – LOUIS JACOBSON
http://www.governing.com/topics/politics/gov-trump-democrats-governors-races-2018.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Three Republican-held governorships are so vulnerable that we’ve rated them lean Democratic. Those are the open seats being vacated by Paul LePage of Maine and Susana Martinez of New Mexico, as well as the seat held by incumbent Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, who announced his run for re-election earlier this week. . .Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) Rauner’s first term continues to be tough. A Republican in a strongly Democratic state, he’s fought an ongoing battle with the Democratic-controlled legislature that kept the state without a full budget for more than two years. The state remains in fiscal trouble, though, with over $15 billion in unpaid bills and the biggest public pension unfunded liability of any state. A decision to sign a bill providing state funding for abortions for low-income women in September, precipitated a war between the governor and social conservatives, possibly enough to provoke a primary challenge. Rauner has a vast personal fortune, but discontent within the GOP, combined with approval ratings in the mid-30s, point to a difficult re-election bid. The Democratic field includes three figures from the populous Cook County: J.B. Pritzker, a multibillionaire and the brother of the former Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker; Chris Kennedy, a businessman and son of Robert F. Kennedy; and progressive state Sen. Daniel Biss. Pritzker appears to be in the best position, having secured endorsements from the AFL-CIO, key unions and Cook County Democratic officialdom. Perhaps most important, Pritzker is a self-funder, which is attractive to Democrats looking for a way to beat the deep-pocketed Rauner.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-cursive-20171026-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: House Republican leader Jim Durkin of Western Springs has released a list of mayors and village presidents who are backing his re-election. He released the list after Burr Ridge Village President Mickey Straub said earlier this month that he was considering a primary challenge to Durkin, who has been House GOP leader since 2013 and has served in the legislature for 19 years. The 16 mayors backing Durkin come from throughout the suburban area including from outside his district, such as Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin, Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico and Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns. But he’s also backed closer to home by Western Springs Village President Alice Gallagher and Homer Glen Mayor George Yukich. Straub’s potential challenge to Durkin is part of the conservative fallout over GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner’s decision to sign legislation expanding taxpayer-subsidized abortions. Some conservatives also expressed dismay that several Republicans defected from Rauner and Durkin to join with Democrats in enacting a spending and tax-hike package that ended the state’s historic budget impasse in July. Straub said many conservative groups encouraged him to take on Durkin, including getting support from failed 2010 governor candidate and current radio show host Dan Proft and onetime U.S. Senate candidate Patrick Hughes. Proft and Hughes co-founded the politically tax-exempt group the Illinois Opportunity Project.)

http://www.saukvalley.com/2017/10/24/springfield-scoop-rauner-fails-integrity-test-so-ives-might-challenge-him/ar82yzk/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives sounds like she’ll be a candidate for Illinois governor. The Wheaton Republican is one of the most conservative members of the General Assembly, and she is hopping mad at Gov. Bruce Rauner, whom she contends is not trustworthy. Rauner angered many in his party by signing a bill last month providing state funding for elective abortions. He did this after promising multiple Catholic bishops and state lawmakers that he wouldn’t. “He’s failed the integrity test. No one in the Legislature believes a word he says,” Ives said. If Ives enters the race, she would be the only candidate opposing abortion rights in either the Republican or Democrat gubernatorial primaries. “The state is broke. We can’t afford to create another entitlement program, let alone for something as morally reprehensible as abortion,” she said. But Ives says her objection to Rauner goes beyond this. For example, although he ran on a platform opposing “crony capitalism,” Rauner signed a measure giving a multibillion-dollar bailout to Exelon, a power company. Are you starting to get the feeling that she really dislikes the governor? Yeah, me too. But it’s one thing to object to what the leader of your party is doing, and it’s another thing to leave your safe seat in the Legislature and challenge him. Ives said she hasn’t decided yet whether she will run. But listening to her, it sure sounds like she is on the brink of diving in. But running and winning are two different things. And, sadly, money is the lifeblood of politics. Ives began the month with $8,488 in her campaign coffers, while Rauner had $65.5 million. Most of that money came from either himself or his billionaire buddy, businessman Ken Griffin. That almost makes David and Goliath seem like an even contest. And the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, J.B. Pritzker, also is a billionaire who is self- funding. Could Ives beat not only Rauner but Pritzker? Mike Lawrence, a longtime statehouse observer and former senior adviser to Gov. Jim Edgar, is skeptical. “I don’t think she will win the primary, but I’m not writing her off. I think if she runs, she will start out with a solid 30 percent of Republicans who vote in primaries. Far-right conservatives have a disproportionate influence in primaries,” he said. Lawrence noted that when Edgar ran in the Republican primary in 1990 against Steve Baer, the relatively unknown Baer got more than 30 percent of the vote, mainly from anti-abortion voters angry that Edgar supported abortion rights. So, can a middle-class mother of five beat two of the wealthiest men in Illinois? She faces long odds. But she seems undeterred. And there may be a certain populist appeal to someone who isn’t among the wealthiest Illinoisans running. When pressed about her candidacy, Ives said her 8th-grade daughter told her, “Mom, I thought you were going to announce last week.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Senate GOP Leader BILL BRADY, R-Bloomington, on Wednesday announced that JASON GERWIG is his new press secretary. Gerwig, 44, of Springfield, takes over for PATTY SCHUH, who was named Gov. Rauner’s deputy chief of staff for communications earlier this month. He and his wife, EMILY, have a 5-year-old daughter. “Jason brings over 20 years of communications and government experience to this important position, and he’s been a well-respected, and valued, member of our staff,” Brady said. Gerwig was first on Senate GOP communications staff in 1996. http://altondailynews.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=17&id=254111
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner says he is calling on Congress to pass a federal bill that would allow Illinois to reorganize its pension debt, but no one must have picked up the phone. Last month, Rauner told a group of business leaders that he’s pushing for a bill that would allow the state to restructure much of its estimated $130 billion in unfunded pension liabilities. “We’ve got a bill now. We’re working with Congress to pass a law. We’re lobbying right now that would allow states to reorganize and restructure their pensions,” he said. “If we can get this bill passed in Congress, and I’m hoping to get it done with this tax overhaul that we’re doing, if we can get this bill passed, [it will be] transformative to Illinois taxpayers.” But none of Illinois’ Republican congressional delegation would confirm this week that anyone from Rauner’s camp has approached them about a standalone proposal or one that would be tied in with the coming tax reform plan. Rauner doesn’t have the best relationship with the GOP Congressmen. They strongly rebuked Rauner last month for his signing of a controversial bill allowing for the public funding of abortions. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, who’s in charge of the GOP’s tax reform plan, wouldn’t comment on the premise of allowing a bankruptcy-style restructuring but told others that the idea has been discussed but only conceptually. The Hill reports that House Speaker Paul Ryan will release the details of their tax reform legislation next week. A spokesperson with the governor’s office did not immediately respond to questions for this story.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a press release today, the Chicago Republican Party expressed disappointment that a staffer has been denied access to Illinois Republican Party headquarters. The Chicago GOP staffer was told by a Rauner staffer that he could no longer use a desk within the office. According to the press release, the reason the IL GOP offered is a press report that Chris Cleveland, chairman of the Chicago Republican Party, is under consideration as a running mate for State Rep Jeanne Ives. Ives is considering a gubernatorial bid. “We’re disappointed the governor’s team would do something like this. We’re running candidates in Chicago, and the city and state parties need to coordinate so they’re not left out in the cold,” said Cleveland. “The governor should be above such petty retribution.”)
