(FROM THE ARTICLE: I took a quick look at her expenditures and found a few interesting items. For instance, that book her campaign published and mailed to voters about Gov. Rauner cost her $385,680 via Jameson Books Inc., which is based in Ottawa. Ives spent $2,748,284.85 on advertising, including $64,660 to run spots on the Illinois News Network, which used to be run by the Illinois Policy Institute. She reported spending $257K on media production and just $3,759.65 on polls. Her spokesperson Kathleen Murphy was paid a mere $1,000, which is really odd. Pundit and PR person Dennis Byrne was paid $20,000 for contractual services. Locality Labs, which is owned by Dan Proft ally Brian Timpone, was paid $37,908 for a website, newspaper advertising and contractual work. Timpone’s Newsinator LLC was paid $750. Trump Tower got $1,294 for lodging and an event, while Uline Ship was paid $352.68. And, finally, a company called Union Signs and Printing received $4,200 for yard signs out of a total of $35K spent on the signs. A look at her in-kind contributions show Proft’s Illinois Opportunity Project paid for a plane ride the day before the election.)

The message is directed to 16th District Committeeman John McGlasson — who did not support Gov. Bruce Rauner, but rather Jeanne Ives. McGlasson also did not support Congressman Adam Kinzinger. The letter, signed by four current lawmakers, asks McGlasson not to run for committeeman again. The same letter was also mailed to all of the newly elected precinct committeemen in the 16th District. (THE LETTER) McGlasson tells NBC 5 he will not be deterred and is going to run for the committeeman post again and expects to win. He sees the letter from the lawmakers as a way to silence his voice. Weaver tells NBC 5 “The letter focused far more on the congressional race” than McGlasson’s support for Ives. He adds “myself and several leaders feel that it would be in the best interest of the party and to achieve unity moving forward if McGlasson were to not run again and allow new leadership.”)

Many Democratic voters in high-tax states cried foul when the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act capped these deductions at $10,000 from 2018 onward, and some are trying to fight back. “We’re attempting to come up with ways to negate and blunt the harsh and unfair Republican tax policy,” Kevin de Leon, the Democratic leader of the California Senate, told CNBC. Several states are devising schemes to allow residents to pay some of their state tax liability as a gift to a charitable fund rather than directly to the state government, restoring its deductibility. Such efforts are misguided. The overall tax bill may be a disaster, but nixing those deductions was the progressive thing to do. Liberals should train their ire elsewhere.)

Doug Birdsall of the Lausanne Movement and Darrell Bock of Dallas Theological Seminary have arranged the invitation-only meeting of likeminded pastors, authors, and seminary staff together. According to The Christian Post, they want to refocus the movement away from politics but fully expect Trump to be the “elephant in the room.” Attendees reportedly include Pastor Tim Keller, Wheaton College’s Ed Stetzer, Fuller Seminary President Mark Labberton, NYC megachurch pastor A.R. Bernard, and many others who have publicly expressed their displeasure with President Trump. Other high-profile individuals in evangelicalism – like Franklin Graham of Samaritan’s Purse, Jerry Falwell Jr. of Liberty University, Dr. Robert Jeffress of First Baptist-Dallas, and a host of other evangelicals who support President Trump – are “not involved in [the] discussions yet,” Birdsall responded when asked. “I have been in touch with two of their offices with a desire to engage in a meaningful conversation,” CP quotes Birdsall saying. “I don’t think they are globally perceived as evangelical thought leaders by virtue of what they have written or by virtue of the values that are reflected in their public statements.” Dr. Richard Land of Southern Evangelical Seminary says a look at who’s invited – and who’s not – betrays their real purpose: marginalizing evangelicals who support President Trump. “Any definition of ‘thought leaders’ and any definition of evangelicalism that excludes the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Franklin Graham is a pale imitation – anemic and incomplete,” says Land. The organizers’ complaint is that supporting Trump excuses his past indiscretions and taints the evangelical movement. But when I went to see my accountant this year to go over my taxes, I found out that instead of getting a $3,000 refund like usual, I’ll owe more than $1,500 in taxes next year beyond what was already withheld — all on the same income. I was so shocked I asked my accountant to check again. But he came back with the same math and that same unexpected number. That’s when I realized that the GOP’s plan is a classic bait-and-switch. And everyday Americans like my family are going to pay the price very soon. Thanks to a cap on deductions for state and local taxes (SALT) — deductions that benefit many middle and upper-middle class families — and other changes to deductions, many hardworking Americans will find themselves paying more in 2019. Instead of the refunds we’re accustomed to, we’ll be the ones writing checks. The GOP tax plan added nearly $1.5 trillion to the deficit, while slashing taxes for the very wealthy and big corporations. According to the Tax Policy Center, 83 percent of the tax bill’s cuts will go to the top 1 percent in our country. Ending SALT deductions is a way for the GOP to help raise revenue to cover the cost of those cuts — leaving working families like mine to foot the bill for tax giveaways to those who need them least. For me, that means I’ll have less money to take care of my family and my property. Last year, I reinvested my return to make important improvements to my house and the apartment I rent out. Some of these costs I can predict, but there’s always something that comes up whether it’s basic maintenance or serious roof repairs. And as a parent with one daughter in college and one about to start, every penny counts. A $4,500 change in my taxes is a lot of pennies. I’ve saved to make sure my children’s college education isn’t a heavy financial burden on them, but without my usual return, my financial plans may need to change.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democratic Governors Association sent another mass email Thursday morning, updating the length of the era of post-primary strife among Illinois Republicans. “Day 16,” began the subject header. That email marked 16 days in which there had been no unity breakfast or other meeting of the minds between the winner of the gubernatorial primary, incumbent Bruce Rauner, and his barely vanquished firebrand conservative opponent, state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton. Sixteen days in which the two have reportedly not spoken. Sixteen days in which Rauner has not given in to Ives’ demand that he take out an ad admitting that he lied about her during the campaign. Sixteen days in which Ives has declined to retract or soften her blistering attacks on Rauner from the campaign, attacks that included: “Nobody can trust Bruce Rauner, he’s lied to everybody about everything.” He “has failed the integrity test in many ways.” “He basically got nothing done.” And “What the hell is wrong with this governor?” The daily count-up emails from the Democrats are likely to end soon — they’re already starting to feel a little spammy — but DGA spokesman Sal Salustro directed me to a running tally of the days at Medium.com that will continue. “We’re going to keep a focus on it,” he said. “There is no path to victory for Rauner without Ives and her supporters.” Rauner seemed to acknowledge as much during his televised victory speech March 20 after the primary election. “For those of you around Illinois who wanted to send me a message, let me be clear,” he said. “I have heard you.” In fact, however, “I have heard you” was anything but clear under the circumstances. Literally, yes, obviously, Rauner had heard the outraged howls of social conservatives who’d voted for Ives in large part to express their displeasure at his signing a bill expanding abortion rights and his several other deviations from right-wing orthodoxy. “I’ve come to expect politicians to shade the truth, but what’s clear today is that Rauner’s promises were just flat-out lies,” said House GOP floor leader Peter Breen of Lombard after the governor signed the abortion bill. “In the face of overwhelming evidence of Rauner’s inability to competently administer the Illinois government, inability to stand up to Mike Madigan effectively and inability to keep his word and his commitments, I can no longer support him.” Those howls translated into votes — enough that the wealthy incumbent was able to squeak by a scrappy state legislator by fewer than 3 percentage points. But hearing is not heeding, as anyone who has ever deftly deployed the expression “I have heard you” in an argument knows well. What did Rauner mean? That he planned to adopt some of the views of those who had opposed him? Or that these views had registered with him, but he planned to ignore them? Both meanings are politically perilous. If Rauner lurches to the right to placate social conservatives, he risks alienating the moderate voters who provided his narrow margin of victory in 2014, when, as a first-time candidate, he proudly ran with “no social agenda.” And if he fails to apologize or correct course, a significant number of dispirited GOP base voters may well stay home on Election Day in November. So I put the question to Rauner spokesman Justin Giorgio: “What is the message that he heard? What is the message that he believes 48 percent of primary voters are trying to give him? And how will he act upon that message?” Giorgio’s reply: “The governor understands that we all have to work harder to find common ground on the issues we disagree on. He understands the need to engage all Illinoisans to continue making progress on the issues that unite us: cutting taxes, creating jobs and rooting out corruption.” Translation: Pound sand, wing nuts. When it comes down to a choice between me and Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker, you’ll discover your inner Peter Breen. Rep. Breen, who had been all in for Ives, announced after the primary that “Gov. Rauner stated in the media that he’s heard the message, and I believe he has. (He) is our party’s nominee, and I support him 100 percent.” I wanted to know what message Breen believes Rauner heard, but he did not respond to requests for comment. Sure, primaries are bruising, the rhetoric is heated and pragmatism generally ends up superseding principle when it comes time to vote. Even Ives has said she’ll vote for Rauner (though she’s said her husband will not). Unity breakfasts, like the gathering the Democratic gubernatorial rivals had the Saturday morning after the March 20 primary, are polite agreements to ignore the preceding ugliness and pretend the ideological differences are minor. But that rhetorical salve is important. Parties with open, infected wounds have a hard time getting healthy by the time voters go to the polls. Every day that goes by with Rauner refusing to apologize and Ives refusing to offer a single nice word about him is a day for the Democrats to celebrate. Seventeen days on Friday. And counting.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has announced that it will begin publishing a list of criminal aliens who are inmates in the county jail, as part of its existing “Who’s in Jail,” online database. The information made public will also include when criminal aliens are released from jail, a move that comes in direct retaliation to the state’s “sanctuary” laws which prohibit cooperation between police and federal immigration officials. “This is in response to SB-54 limiting our ability to communicate with federal authorities and our concern that criminals are being released to the street when there’s another avenue to safeguard the community by handing them over (to ICE for potential deportation),” Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes said. California’s “sanctuary law” has recently encountered resistance to this dangerous policy from multiple communities in California. Most notably, the City Council in Los Alamitos voted last week on an ordinance to exempt the city from state law over concerns that it is unconstitutional. The Yorba Linda City Council agreed to file an amicus brief to a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice against California. The Orange County Board of Supervisors are also expected to consider a range of possible actions against the state law as well.
