CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— FRONT PAGE WITH COLOR PICTURE: Are video games addictive like drugs, gambling? Some who’ve struggled say yes – John Keilman  (DIERSEN: The more that you oppose vices like I do, the harder that those who promote vices work against you.  Those who promote vices in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois work especially hard against me.  Republicans oppose the promotion of vices.  Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs promote vices.)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH COLOR PHOTOS OF MCSWEENEY AND DRURY: What happens when two suburban lawmakers defy Rauner, Madigan – Kerry Lester (DIERSEN: Who do you defy?  I defy Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC), DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and Illinois Republican Party (IRP) leaders who are Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, Green plants, and RINOs a) when I promote the traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving), and other planks in the IRP platform and in the Republican Party platform and b) when I promote the MTRCC resolution against video gambling.  What has happened to me?  I am no longer the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, the MTRCC webmaster, an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, or an American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170530/what-happens-when-two-suburban-lawmakers-defy-rauner-madigan
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But going it alone is not without costs, big or small. When engraved clocks by Irish-American designer Simon-Pearce were handed out to the rest of the Democratic caucus earlier this year, Drury didn’t get one. . .Subsequently, Drury was removed from his spot on the judiciary committee. Most bills Drury has sponsored this session have landed in a sort of legislative purgatory — the rules committee — and would emerge only if Madigan and Democratic leaders allowed it, something Drury has pointed out in news releases. . .Drury says he gets praise back home in his North suburban district, but at the Capitol, he’s ostracized and spends much of his free time on his own. During Democratic caucus meetings, he appears sullen and withdrawn and often leaves the party sessions early when Democrats begin discussing upcoming votes on important bills. . .McSweeney rarely attends caucus meetings at all. “The governor doesn’t need to tell me what to do. And that’s what the Republican caucus is, getting marching orders from the governor’s office,” said McSweeney, an investment specialist. Instead, McSweeney spends his time trying to drum up votes for the bills he hopes to pass and dining with Democratic lawmakers and close confidants of Madigan. He’s made a habit of inviting members of the black caucus, including Democratic state Rep. Christian Mitchell of Chicago, to town hall meetings in his Northwest suburban district. Unlike Drury’s experience, where many of his bills have died in committee, McSweeney said he hasn’t been retaliated upon by the GOP, and his bills — which also depend on Democratic leaders calling them for a vote — have tended to pass by wide, bipartisan margins. . .Both Drury and McSweeney have the financial wherewithal and the help of wealthy friends to fund their campaigns without depending on party leaders for donations. Neither received more than $1,500 from party sources in the last election cycle, Illinois State Board of Elections records show.)
— FRONT PAGE: Bill to stop cop pension double dipping, based on Naperville case, passes – Chacour Koop  (DIERSEN: If I sought a government office or a political office, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would shout that I get both a Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension ($50,856/year) and Social Security ($2,028/year). In my defense, my Social Security is dramatically reduced because I get a CSRS pension.)

CHICAGO NOW
— Special Memorial Day thanks to military draftees killed in action – Dennis Byrne  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who used/use my getting student draft deferments 1966-1970 and my getting a financial draft hardship 1970-1971 against me.  Most of them were my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government.)
http://www.chicagonow.com/dennis-byrnes-barbershop/2017/05/special-memorial-day-thanks-to-military-draftees-killed-in-action/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On this Memorial Day, here is a special recognition of men who were conscripted into the military and who were killed in action. Volunteering for hazardous military duty and paying for it with your life deserves the highest praise. But what about those men who were drafted, who had no choice and who were killed? Today, memories of the draft have faded and the reality of Selective Service are absent in the lives of so many Americans. It is hard for today’s generations, mainly post-Baby Boomer, to know what it is like for government to order you into combat. For notification to report to a certain military installation on a certain date to be inducted into the Army. To be hauled off to basic training, to be told how to meet your responsibility to kill people. To be transported to front lines where people are dying. To either fire your weapon and fight, or be court marshaled. Failure to report for your military draft would result in imprisonment or fines and immediate induction. Today, the governing principle is that “It’s my body and no one can tell me what to do with it.” That’s mostly the mantra of the abortion industry and women’s rights advocates. But the philosophy certain has successfully seeped into today’s package of taken-for-granted men’s rights. A draft is simply inconceivable in today’s culture of extreme individualism. Today’s generations have no concept of what life was like when you had to plan for at least two years of military service. No “gap” year allowed. Avoiding the draft has a major concern, as important if not more so, than picking a college or a career. College deferments, which ultimately would run out. Getting married, but that deferment disappeared as the Vietnam War grew hotter. Teaching or certain other occupations. Using a connection to find  a slot in a high-demand reserve unit. In the Vietnam War, draftees accounted for 30.4 percent, or 17,725 combat deaths. Some 1.9 million men were drafted from 1964 to 1973.  In World War II, 61.2 percent of military men, or 11,5 million men, were draftees. While a large number of men were volunteers, in a manner of speaking, they also in reality were inductees. The draft, as designed, encouraged young men to “volunteer” for other branches of the service than the Army. “Volunteer” service in the Navy or Air Force was at least a year longer, but the chances of getting maimed or killed in combat were less. The draft always has been controversial, less so in time of national emergency such as World War II. But barring the most extraordinary crisis, today’s culture has killed all possibility of it returning (even though men today are still required to register for selective service). By the way, the stereotype of the Vietnam veteran is way off base. The image of the poorly educated, reluctant, drugged out and minority Vietnam soldier needs to be changed according to  Fact vs. Fiction. Check it out.)

CHICAGO ARGUS
— Memorial Day; ‘yea’ or ‘nae’ for those who do their military service? – Gregory Tejeda  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who used/use my getting student draft deferments 1966-1970 and my getting a financial draft hardship 1970-1971 against me.  Most of them were my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government.)
http://chicagoargus.blogspot.com/2017/05/memorial-day-yea-or-nae-for-those-who.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I never served in any branch of the military; that fact doesn’t make me the least bit unique. There are many who for whatever reason manage to avoid a stint in the Army or any other military organization, and certainly don’t think our lives are any less complete as a result. OF COURSE, THERE also are those in our society who made a point of enlisting the first chance they got, and wind up thinking of their time in uniform and being among those who “serve their country” as the high point of their lives! Some even come away with thinking their military record entitles them to prime treatment for the remainder of their lives. We have a serious schism in our society; often viewing various issues quite differently. And not just a matter of whether we think Donald Trump is a “great American” or a “pompous fool” totally unfit to be carrying the title of Commander-in-Chief of our nation’s military! That split includes how essential we think it is that one have a military service record as part of their permanent record, or how much “lip service” they pay to the concept — I attended a Catholic mass that included a musical tribute to the armed services in its choir’s Sunday program; and while many were eager to support the idea, only a tiny minority of the congregation admitted to actually having served. Which gets down to the essence of the direction we think our society ought to be headed. THERE ARE THOSE people who will say that one reason, if not the primary reason, that Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were unfit to be president is because they never served in the military (and in the case of Clinton used many of the legal maneuvers people of that era engaged in to avoid a call-up to active duty). Some of an older generation remember back to the military draft, and think that forcing people of various economic and social classes to interact helped ease the societal split that now exists. Although others, including those who managed to avoid military service, would argue that the very concept of having done a stretch in the military puts a person into a mindset that makes them too narrow and unfit to address the serious problems confronting our nation, and our world. Perhaps we all ought to be engaged in something more than blind faith in forcing esoteric concepts of what one wants to define as patriotism by a trip out to the cemetery to pay tribute to someone who was unfortunate to have lost their life during their military service. SOME OF US like to talk about the “ultimate sacrifice” those young men made, I’m sure many of them could have contributed something equally worthwhile to society had they had a chance at a long- and full-life. While many of those who these days do enlist in the military often do so because their options in life are limited; and that military stretch may be their best option for preparing for an adult life. I remember in my own case, my mother would have been appalled if I had seriously talked about enlisting. I remember when Army recruiters sniffed around me when I was 16 and in high school, she gave them the cold shoulder. In my case, that probably was a wise direction. I did make the most of a college education, and it stirred me in the right direction toward what I wanted to do (yes, I actually figured out as far back as age 13 that I wanted to be a reporter-type person). I resisted the Army’s marketing pleas to “be all you can be.” WHILE I HAD cousins who did stints of military service, and it helped them come up with the funds to pay for future education options they took on or taught them some skills used later in life. It worked out well for them, and I’m sure for many of the individuals who have done military service. My point in stating all this is that I’m not about to hold it over anybody’s head that I didn’t have to use the military to get ahead in life. Meaning I’m not about to defer to those who want to act as though the fact that they did a stretch in uniform somehow makes them superior. I actually find such an attitude to be arrogant and unfit for anyone to have in our society. Particularly because it places a view that one can claim superiority for doing something that may well have been their only realistic option in life. And on this Memorial Day when we pay tribute to the contributions of military personnel throughout our history, perhaps I should even throw in that having such an attitude perhaps even qualifies as un-American!)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Apart from a shared mastery of television, Trump is, in many respects, the anti-Kennedy. The 70-year-old Republican, who had no political experience, was the oldest person ever elected US president. Kennedy, a 43-year-old Democrat who had served in the House and the Senate, was the youngest. At the 100-day mark, Trump’s public approval rating was 41%. Kennedy’s was 83%. Trump was granted five draft deferments during the Vietnam war; Kennedy received military honors for saving the lives of crewmates when their torpedo boat was struck by a Japanese destroyer during the second world war. Trump infamously does not read books, gives disjointed speeches and has claimed: “You have to be wealthy in order to be great.” Kennedy was fond of referencing ancient Greeks and Shakespeare, won a Pulitzer prize for the book Profiles in Courage, and once declared: “This country cannot afford to be materially rich and spiritually poor.”)

DAILY HERALD
— OUTRAGEOUS: DuPage County to revisit video gambling ban – Robert Sanchez  (DIERSEN: Please join Kathy Gilroy, me, and others who will speak at the DuPage County Finance Committee meeting Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at 7:30 AM, in favor of keeping the ban on video gambling in unincorporated DuPage County.  If you are in DuPage County, please urge DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, the 18 DuPage County Board members, and especially, the 3 board members who represent your district, to vote to keep the ban.  In 2009, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) unanimously passed a resolution against video gambling throughout DuPage County.  Since then, no MTRCC member has done anything to rescind that resolution.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170525/dupage-county-to-revisit-video-gambling-ban
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Amid calls for a repeal of DuPage’s ban on video gambling machines, county board members are going to revisit the issue. Officials in recent months have heard from businesses and a Veterans of Foreign Wars post that would like to offer video gambling. But they’ve also heard from gambling opponents who want to keep the moratorium that affects more than two dozen bars, restaurants, golf courses and social clubs in unincorporated parts of the county. In response, board members have agreed to discuss video gambling during their finance committee meeting scheduled for June 13. “We have people asking us to look at it,” county board member Jim Zay said. “So we need to have a discussion. We should at least give these people the opportunity to present their case for why we should change it. And we should give opponents the opportunity to say why they’re still against it.” Illinois legalized video gambling in 2009, but towns and counties were able to opt out. DuPage enacted its ban in August 2009 after officials cited possible social problems. County board member Paul Fichtner, who serves as chairman of the board’s finance committee, said the outcome of next month’s discussion will determine whether a measure is drafted to lift the prohibition. “We’re going to give everybody an opportunity to speak to the issue,” Fichtner said. If the panel recommends repealing the ban, it still would require a final vote by the full county board. Fichtner said he doesn’t know if there’s enough support on the board to pursue a repeal. “It’s going to be close,” he said. If the ban is lifted, county officials estimate that around 28 liquor license holders might be eligible to apply for a video gambling license. The county would gain between $200,000 and $250,000 a year in revenue, according to one estimate. Counties and towns that allow video gambling receive 5 percent of each machine’s profit. While towns throughout DuPage initially enacted bans, a number have since changed their minds. DuPage towns that allow video gambling are Addison, Aurora, Bensenville, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Darien, Glendale Heights, Itasca, Oakbrook Terrace, Roselle, Villa Park, Westmont, Willowbrook, Wood Dale and Woodridge, according to the Illinois Gaming Board. Some bars owners in unincorporated areas say they’ve lost customers to establishments where video gambling is allowed. But anti-gambling advocates say it’s not the county board’s responsibility to level the playing field for bars.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— OUTSTANDING: Drug addiction treatment center hosts talk opposing legalized pot – Diane Moca
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/ct-nvs-recreational-marijuana-forum-edward-st-0526-20170525-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: former presidential advisor shared his fears about the effects of marijuana legalization during a lecture Thursday at Linden Oaks Naperville Outpatient Center. “People have to stand up to this industry,” said Kevin Sabet, an assistant professor who served as a senior advisor to President Barack Obama’s drug control director and worked in the Clinton and Bush administrations. “It’s about getting health care voices involved. We need more partners at the table. Right now this industry is getting away with murder.” Sabet shared slides, statistics and anecdotes to support his premise that legalized recreational marijuana in Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Washington, D.C., is a lucrative industry that’s misleading the public about pot’s risks and benefits. “We learned the hard way about tobacco, which caused tens of millions of needless deaths,” said Sabet, who founded the nonprofit SAM, or Smart Approaches to Marijuana, in 2013. His organization’s goal, according to its website, is to prevent “another Big Tobacco (by) stopping marijuana legalization and commercialization, educating policy-makers and the public on marijuana issues, and fundraising.” Sabet said marijuana use causes respiratory problems, results in low birth weight babies and can impair learning with permanent IQ loss when consumed in large quantities by someone who’s young, according to the National Academy of Sciences. While he acknowledged that marijuana can eliminate nausea for those fighting cancer or other illnesses, he but did not mention other benefits commonly cited by medical advocates, such as reducing pain and seizures. “The medical marijuana industry is already making a lot of money here” in Illinois, he said. “It’s all about the money.” In the past four years, Illinois has legalized cannabis for medical use and decriminalized recreational use. In March 2017, state lawmakers proposed a measure legalizing recreational marijuana that could be voted on next year. Proponents estimate marijuana could generate between $350 million and $700 million in annual sales, reaping a sales tax windfall for the state. “We’re looking at one side of the ledger. People are not counting the costs,” said Sabet, who presented statistics on health care costs from pot-related illnesses. Marijuana advocates counter that legalization would save money on enforcement and boost opportunities for minority youth. An NAACP report from 2015 said marijuana arrests account for more than half of all drug arrests in the country, with blacks being six times more likely than whites to be arrested for pot possession, making it harder for them to obtain student loans and jobs. Dawn Neylon said she plans to share Sabet’s message with the middle and high school students with whom she works at 360 Youth Services, a Naperville nonprofit prevention program. “We’re learning new ways to give them information to make healthy choices. Alcohol and tobacco use is down dramatically (in Naperville school districts 203 and 204). There’s not much change in marijuana use.” In recent years, teenagers’ perceptions of marijuana have changed and she is seeing a decrease in their belief that pot poses a risk, Neylong said. “That’s concerning. When there’s a decreased sense of harm, there’s a greater risk to use it,” she said. Based on her interactions with teens, she said Naperville parents should be just as concerned about “a little weed” or “a little beer” as they are about opiates because “the earlier they start to use (alcohol or marijuana), the more likely they are to abuse. We want to push the first age of use to help prevent challenges later in life.” Sabet said a 2013 study from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services showed marijuana can lead to other drugs for some people. “A majority of people who try pot stop using it after three times or less,” he said. “Three to four percent of the time they will try other drugs. More than ninety percent of people using heroin say marijuana or alcohol were drugs of choice before.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/evanston/news/ct-evr-evanston-racial-discrimination-lawsuit-tl-0504-20170519-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A former Evanston public works director Suzette Robinson is suing the city and several city officials for what the lawsuit alleges was “discrimination on the basis of race, harassment and [a] racially hostile work environment, and for retaliation.” However, Evanston’s city manager, who was named as one of the defendants in the suit, said Suzette Robinson’s race played no part in the decision to eliminate her job. “I deny Ms. Robinson’s claims in this lawsuit that race or retaliation had any role in my decision-making,” said Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz. In the complaint, filed May 27, 2016, in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Robinson asks for $75,000 in compensation, plus attorney’s fees and punitive damages. She names Bobkiewicz, the City of Evanston, city attorney W. Grant Farrar and human resources manager Jennifer Lin as defendants. According to the lawsuit, Robinson was public works director for Evanston from March 2010 until August 2015. The suit said that she was one of “three African-American employees at the department director level reporting directly to Bobkiewicz.” The complaint reads that Robinson’s position was eliminated, “effective immediately,” in August 2015 after Bobkiewicz stated “that the city planned to combine public works and utilities into one department named the public works agency.” But the lawsuit says the City Council did not approve the “proposed reorganization” until September 2015. Robinson alleges that Bobkiewicz “discriminated against her on the basis of race” and “retaliated against her” “for filing complaints about racial discrimination,” according to court documents.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— The Conservative Force Behind Speeches Roiling College Campuses – STEPHANIE SAUL  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, schools crank out hate-filled “good little Democrats” who are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/20/us/college-conservative-speeches.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  “Let’s give it up for the racists that are hosting this event!” someone yelled, and the crowd roared, foot-stomping in unison, then breaking into song: Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” One member of the audience held up a sign, “Queers Against Islamaphobia.” Another unfurled a banner: “Muslims Welcome. Fascists Get Out.” Close to 200 students kept up the noise for more than an hour in a University at Buffalo lecture hall on May 1, mostly drowning out the evening’s featured speaker, Robert Spencer, a conservative author and blogger who espouses a dark view of Islam. The event appeared to follow a familiar script, in which a large contingent of liberals muzzles a provocative speaker invited by a small conservative student club. But the propelling force behind the event — and a number of recent heat-seeking speeches on college campuses — was a national conservative group that is well funded, highly organized and on a mission, in its words, to “restore sanity at your school.” The group, the Young America’s Foundation, had paid Mr. Spencer’s $2,000 fee, trained the student leader who organized the event and provided literature for distribution. Other than the possibility of outside interference, little had been left to chance. The speeches are a part of the group’s mission of grooming future conservative leaders — Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller, a White House adviser, are among its alumni — and its long list of donors has included the television game show host Pat Sajak, the novelist Tom Clancy, the billionaire brothers David H. and Charles G. Koch, and the Amway billionaires Richard and Helen Devos, who gave $10 million to endow the Reagan Ranch near Santa Barbara, Calif., which the foundation runs as a preserve. (Their daughter-in-law, Betsy DeVos, the secretary of education, is not a donor, the group says.) Over the past two years, armed with a $16 million infusion from the estate of an orthodontist in California, Robert Ruhe, the organization has doubled its programming, including campus speeches. In 2016 that meant 111 speakers on 77 campuses. On the group’s website, it boasted of “dispatching” 31 speakers to colleges last month alone. In that time, the speakers have gotten edgier, more in-your-face and sometimes even meanspirited. Among them is Ann Coulter, whose canceled speech last month at the University of California, Berkeley, led the foundation, which was covering most of her $20,000 fee, to sue the college, arguing that it had violated the First Amendment in its failure to provide a suitable time and place for the event. The resulting clashes on university campuses, including protests and efforts to block speeches, have raised free speech questions. And at Berkeley, even liberals who oppose Ms. Coulter’s viewpoints said her speech should have been allowed to proceed. In the meantime, protesters have questioned whether such events are cynically intended to provoke reactions. “It’s part of a larger systematic and extremely well-funded effort to disrupt public universities and create tension among student groups on campus,” said Alexandra Prince, a doctoral student at Buffalo who circulated a petition to block Mr. Spencer.)

Richard Thissen, national president of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, called the proposal an “egregious attack on federal service and seniors” and “unconscionable.”  “The president purports to defend government annuities like Social Security and then proposes to eliminate cost-of-living adjustments for some and limit COLAs for those already retired and living on fixed incomes,” Thissen said. “It is beyond insulting. It is downright mean. Simultaneously promoting tax cuts and forcing a tax on just federal employees, through an increase in retirement contributions, is the height of hypocrisy.” J. David Cox, national president of the American Federation of Government Employees blasted the plan as something that “defies reason.” “The American people knows what’s fair, and raiding the already-modest retirement benefits of the people who inspect our food and lock up dangerous criminals is beyond the pale,” Cox said. “These proposals portray an astounding misplacement of priorities that the American public should not soon forget.” And Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., said cuts to federal retirement benefits will hurt the government’s ability to attract workers capable of fulfilling the missions of various federal agencies. “The biggest losers from President Trump’s draconian cuts to federal employee pay and benefits will be the American people who count on dedicated federal employees to care for our veterans, maintain our national parks, and process Social Security checks each and every day,” Connolly said. “Cuts of this magnitude will make it impossible to recruit and retain the qualified workforce we need to meet our nation’s challenges.”)

FEDERALIST
— 12 Ways The Southern Poverty Law Center Is A Scam To Profit From Hate-Mongering  The Southern Poverty Law Center’s ‘Hate List’ has all the authority of a mean girl’s burn book. Yet it is dangerously provocative. – Stella Morabito  (DIERSEN: Many individuals, organizations, companies, and governments blacklist me because I refuse to carry out their blacklist orders.  Should I write a book about a) those individuals, organizations, companies, and governments that blacklist me and b) those individuals, organizations, companies, and governments that they want me to blacklist?  The book would be extremely lengthy.)
https://thefederalist.com/2017/05/17/12-ways-southern-poverty-law-center-scam-profit-hate-mongering/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What makes the hate list of the Southern Poverty Law Center different from the “burn book” a high school queen bee keeps in the 2004 movie “Mean Girls”? Answer: not much. The burn book was a compilation of insults, gossip, and rumors intended to repel the diva’s “enemies,” label everybody, and keep herself on top of the heap. The SPLC uses its list of designated hate groups in much the same way: to manipulate the lives of others, smear reputations, control personal relationships, and reap the spoils. The dynamic is the same, whether played on the adolescent scene or in the political arena. Both lists serve mostly as power-mongering tools. In civilized societies, we supposedly grow out of that sort of tribalism. But look around and you’ll see such behaviors proliferating in every sphere: politics, journalism, education. A recent headline in the Washington Examiner nailed it: “The Bret Stephens Freak Out is a Reminder that the Media Is Basically a Massive High School Clique.” Why do so many folks treat the SPLC with undeserved reverence, the way too many high school kids treat a self-appointed nasty queen bee? Why do they accept the Southern Poverty Law Center as the nation’s Grand Inquisitor dictating who may speak and who must shut up? And why are its smears and caricatures so often blindly accepted at face value? What qualifies the SPLC to act as judge, jury, and social executioner of any human being who is not their blind supporter? Those questions have been hanging in the air for decades. As with all vilification campaigns, the SPLC plays a dangerous and cruel game under the guise of defending victims. So let’s take a closer look at some of the SPLC’s history and behavior. Let’s count some ways it’s a con game.)

USA TODAY
— Work and politics: What rights do employees have? – Charisse Jones and Michael Izzo  (DIERSEN: From what I see, employers in America are either anti-Trump or scared to death of anti-Trumps.  Because of the aforesaid, soon, if not already, employers in America will stop hiring members of the following groups and will get rid of their employees who are members of the following groups: Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German Americans, draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2017/05/16/work-and-politics-what-rights-do-employees-have/101753060/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Should your politics outside of work affect your status in the office? A congressman’s letter that helped push a New Jersey attorney to resign after her boss was told she was a grassroots “ringleader,’’ has sparked questions about how much an employer can clamp down on an employee’s activism. The Office of Congressional Ethics has been asked to investigate whether U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-New Jersey) interfered with the workplace standing of Saily Avelenda, a former senior vice president at Lakeland Bank, when he called out her political activities in a letter to a member of the bank’s board. In an era of heightened political tensions, when football players have knelt in protest during the national anthem and many Americans are marching and boycotting for perhaps the first time, the case is showing how politics and the workplace can collide.)

FED WEEK
— House Takes Step toward Long-Sought Changes in Pay, Benefits (DIERSEN: Are/were you accused of being overpaid?  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always accused me of being overpaid. In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 33.)
http://www.fedweek.com/fedweek/house-takes-step-toward-long-sought-changes-pay-benefits/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One focus will be a recent CBO report finding that on average federal employees are slightly ahead in pay, and well ahead in terms of benefits, compared with private sector employees of similar education levels. However, that report also showed that those differences vary greatly by educational level, with federal workers having the lowest levels the farthest ahead by both measures, while the most-educated employees are slightly behind in benefits and well behind in salary–again, on average.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/daily-southtown/opinion/ct-sta-slowik-budget-march-st-0517-20170516-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I admire the people walking 200 miles from Chicago to Springfield to urge lawmakers and the governor to pass a fair state budget. They’re expending a tremendous amount of energy for their personal convictions. They’re raising awareness about their desire for Illinois to tax the rich more to fund state services.)

Millions of copies of the book have been sold in the Avon paperback and international editions; it has been translated into 22 languages and was a best seller in both Brazil and Japan. The success of the book made Dr. Kiley, a big, bearded, silver-haired man, a fixture on the television talk-show circuit and led him to write a 1984 spinoff, “The Wendy Dilemma,” about women who inappropriately mother the men in their lives.)

FED SMITH
— Smart and Pretty: Federal Employee Crowned Miss USA – Ralph R. Smith
https://www.fedsmith.com/2017/05/16/federal-employee-crowned-miss-usa/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For the second year in a row, the winner of the Miss USA pageant is from Washington, D.C.  Miss District of Columbia, Kara McCullough, was crowned as the new Miss USA last Sunday at the Las Vegas pageant. McCullough is a 25-year-old scientist who works for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Rockville, Maryland. She was born in Naples, Italy and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is the daughter of a now retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer. As a result, she has traveled and lived in numerous locations around the world including Sicily, Japan, South Korea and Hawaii. Her salary at the agency is $77,490.00 according to data from FedsDataCenter.com. McCullough earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with a concentration in Radiochemistry from South Carolina State University. Her major provided her the opportunity to intern at several universities. This paved the way to her current career at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The newly crowned Miss USA said she wants to inspire children to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Last year, District of Columbia resident Deshauna Barber became the first-ever military member to win Miss USA. Perhaps one of the hardest parts of becoming a celebrity overnight is learning how to deal with the media. The new Miss USA quickly found herself embroiled in the health care controversy. When asked during Sunday night’s pageant whether she thinks that affordable health care for all U.S. citizens is a right or a privilege, she said it is a privilege. As a government employee, I’m granted health care and I see firsthand that for one to have health care, you need to have job. That, predictably, was not what some people wanted to hear as they believe health care is a guaranteed right. Twitter, of course, lit up with various views reflecting some of the issues in political divide in America that now infects most of our lives. Here is a brief sample of the variety of comments.)

GOVERNMENT EXECUTIVE
— A Chemist at a Federal Agency Wins Miss USA – Eric Katz
http://www.govexec.com/federal-news/fedblog/2017/05/chemist-federal-agency-wins-miss-usa/137853/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A federal employee working at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was named Miss USA on Sunday evening, and pledged to spend her year with the crown encouraging more women to join government and eventually, agency leadership ranks. Kara McCullough, a 25-year-old chemist in NRC’s Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response, represented Washington, D.C., in the annual competition. McCullough grew up in the federal ranks as a military brat, with her father serving as a Navy chief petty officer. In addition to her NRC employment, McCullough volunteers annually at a science fair hosted by the Food and Drug Administration as a judge. McCullough said she would be an ambassador to bring more women into government science, technology, engineering and mathematics positions. She noted that in her experience in federal service, women are often underrepresented. “Personally, I want to see more women possessing leadership positions in private and government energy and health sciences agencies; not just conducting laboratory research,” McCullough said after her victory. “As a woman scientist in the government, I have witnessed and been in many meetings where the ratio of men to women is 10:2. I believe more women should be given the opportunity to be representatives in the energy and medical fields.” On stage, McCullough even made a passing reference to the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. Asked whether she believed affordable health care for all Americans is a privilege or a right, she said in a response that made waves that it was a privilege, explaining: “As a government employee, I am granted health care and I see first-hand that for one to have health care, you have to have jobs.” NRC tweeted out a congratulatory message to McCullough on Monday.)

Olsen mesmerized the audience. . .But a freshman Republican House member reportedly took a video of the skit during rehearsal last week and sent it to a member of her leadership team. Republican legislators told me later they were then yanked out of the dance and by showtime last week only Democrats performed during the routine.)

Factors for 915 Cove Court in Wheaton include the subdivision being built in a watershed area and a former septic field, the tremendous amount of surface and subsurface storm water that flows onto the lot during and after heavy rains, the inadequate number of storm sewer inlets in the subdivision, the disruption, obstruction, and improper connection of 6″ and 4″ subterranean drainage lines when the home was built, the pouring the foundation walls on cracked footings, the improper installation and intentional blockage of exterior foundation footing tiles, the installation of only one sump pump when there should have been two or even three or even four, the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, and the fact that all the storm water that gets into the storm sewer system on the lot is limited to the capacity of just one 4″ pipe.  What factors decrease the likelihood of your basement flooding?  For 915 Cove Court, they include the installation of steel reinforcement rods in foundation walls, the installation of interior footing tiles, my paying $900 when the home was built in 1984 to have all nine of the home’s downspouts directly connected to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my installing a backup sump pump, my unobstructing and properly connecting the aforesaid subterranean drainage lines to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my paying for unobstruction (the removal of stones) from some of the exterior footing tiles, my adding hundreds of feet of French drains and many storm sewer inlets on the lot and connecting them directly to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my properly sealing the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, my paying for conversion to an overhead sewer system before the basement was finished in 2005, and my paying for a 20-W whole house natural gas backup electric generator for the home.  Since 1984, because of Wheaton’s failure/refusal to assure that building codes were enforced when the subdivision was constructed and when 915 Cove Court was built, I have been forced to spend many thousands of dollars and many hundreds of hours of my labor to stop basement flooding.)

They hinted/implied/argued/shouted that none of the following helped me carry out my duties as a GAO employee: a) the almost 9 years that I had worked for IRS, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173; b) the fact that much of what I did for IRS was similar to what I did for GAO including interviewing, data gathering, data summary, data analysis, report writing, recommending legal actions, etc.; c) my having passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979; d) my almost having completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul; e) my having earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976 and a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970; f) etc.  After I transferred, they  hinted/implied/argued/shouted that none of the following helped me carry out my duties as a GAO employee: a) my completing the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, b) my passing the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, and c) my earning a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997 while I was assigned to audits of federal financial industry regulators. If I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, younger, and/or a veteran, they would not have done the aforesaid.)

PITTSBURG POST GAZETTE
— Pre-existing conditions keep people shackled and kill dreams – TERRY AIKIN (DIERSEN: What pre-existing conditions do you have?  I should write a book about those in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who disapprove of, despise, or hate my pre-existing conditions. I was baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran. I am conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older (68), non-poor, a gun owner, 100% German American, and a draft avoider. My ancestors have been in America since 1844. I have lived in Wheaton only since 1978. I was a union member for almost 12 years. I am a retired federal employee. I am childless and pet-less. I have only owned American-nameplate vehicles.)
