http://www.gopusa.com/?p=51479
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Poverty is no mystery, and it’s easily avoidable. The poverty line that the Census Bureau used in 2016 for a single person was an income of $12,486 that year. For a two-person household, it was $16,072, and for a four-person household, it was $24,755. To beat those poverty thresholds is fairly simple. Here’s the road map: Complete high school; get a job, any kind of a job; get married before having children; and be a law-abiding citizen. How about some numbers? A single person taking a minimum wage job would earn an annual income of $15,080. A married couple would earn $30,160. By the way, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, less than 4 percent of hourly workers in 2016 were paid the minimum wage. That means that over 96 percent of workers earned more than the minimum wage. Not surprising is the fact that among both black and white married couples, the poverty rate is in the single digits. Most poverty is in female-headed households.)

This bill would extend those protections to most workers in Illinois, regardless of the size of the business.)

WASHINGTON POST
— MARCH 4, 2018 FLASHBACK: An Illinois gun show bans AR-15 sales, landing it at the center of a national gun-control debate – Mark Guarino
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/an-illinois-gun-show-bans-ar-15-sales-landing-it-at-the-center-of-a-national-gun-control-debate/2018/03/04/12502e6a-1fec-11e8-94da-ebf9d112159c_story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: WHEATON, Ill. — The last place one might expect to hear pushback against the National Rifle Association would be at a gun show here, a western suburb of Chicago that reliably votes Republican every election cycle and is the proud home of the Billy Graham Center Museum. . .Organizers halted an advertised raffle that would have awarded an AR-15 to the winner, and vendors were told they would not be allowed to sell the weapon at the monthly show. Frank Cesare – of the Pioneer Valley Sportsman’s Association, which has hosted the show for more than 40 years – said the decision followed complaints the group received after the Parkland shooting and as gun-control advocates planned to protest. “We did the ban to try to calm the situation down and show them we are willing to work with them,” he said, referring to the protesters. Cesare said that the ban on AR-15s also would remain in place for April’s show and that the club is “waiting to see” what the mood is like before deciding on shows later in the year. But the move has forced the club into the gun culture war that has gained new energy across the United States since Parkland. “We didn’t see this coming,” Cesare said. “I’m bewildered we’re in the middle of this. . .I got no problem with the protesters. They’re very frustrated with what’s going on; it’s awful; they’re doing what they think is right. I’m frustrated, too.” Inside the fairgrounds building, vendors and buyers examined used items that have nothing to do with guns, such as fishing lures, archery bows, knives and birdhouses. Four homemade duck decoys and a 1930s rifle were displayed across the table belonging to Jack Jackson, 71. He said Illinois already has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States – buyers must show a firearm owner’s identification card or similar permit – but he noted that responsible gun owners are caught in the middle whenever a mass shooting takes place.)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Citizens of Mexico and of other Spanish-speaking countries crow over their success in conquering America. Soon, if not already, it will be all but impossible for citizens of America to get an education, to get a job, to get elected, to etc. unless they a) speak, read, and write Spanish and b) serve as operatives or as dupes for Mexico and for other Spanish-speaking countries and their citizens. There are tremendous conflicts between the values of citizens of foreign countries and the values of Americans. Democrats side with foreign countries and with their citizens against America and against its citizens. Democrats make it clear to illegals that Democrats use government to give preference to illegals, and especially to those who are minority, female, and/or younger. Democrats shout at foreign countries and at their citizens that Republicans are White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, haters, racists, sexists, bigots, and even worse things who should be gotten rid of. Constructively, Democrats have declared war on Republicans. Democrats count on foreign countries and their citizens to get rid of Republicans once and for all.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a statement to The Post, Menendez condemned the administration’s “practice of replacing seasoned professional and programmatic experts with patronage hires.” He said that “blind loyalty seemingly trumps qualifications, experience and career public servants.” “Congress gave MCC special hiring authority so that it could operate with efficiency and effectiveness, not so that it could become a dumping ground for unqualified partisan loyalists and lackeys,” Menendez wrote. A Republican Foreign Relations Committee aide speaking on the condition of anonymity offered a more upbeat assessment. “We were happy to work with our Democratic counterparts in resolving questions about hiring at MCC as we do regularly in exercising the committee’s oversight function,” the aide said. “Such oversight is important for all agencies under the committee’s jurisdiction, and we will continue working in a bipartisan manner moving forward.”)

U.S. SENATOR MARK WARNER (D, VA)
— On Senate Floor, Sen. Warner Speaks Out For the Federal Workforce (DIERSEN: Aside from me, how many retired federal employees do you know?)
https://www.warner.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2018/7/on-senate-floor-sen-warner-speaks-out-for-the-federal-workforce
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Today, U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA), Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate in support of the federal workforce, which has been subjected to unprecedented attacks under the Trump Administration. “The way our federal government treats its workforce, the way we manage and invest in the human capital of our federal government is not some kind of parochial issue. This is an issue that impacts all American who pay their taxes, follow the laws, and expect their federal government to work for them, and to work well,” Sen. Warner said on the Senate floor. “That’s why, Mr. President, I also rise with great concern about the recent efforts by this Administration to scapegoat and undermine the work of our public servants. It started with the hiring freezes that threw a wrench into the day-to-day operations of nearly every federal agency — with no apparent benefit to the taxpayers. It continued with executive orders undermining workplace protections for federal workers and their ability to organize as part of a union. And it culminated last month, with the Trump Administration’s plan to freeze federal employee pay and cut retirement benefits for 2.6 million federal retirees and survivors. This is the thanks our federal employees get for their service!” On May 4, OPM Director Jeff Pon outlined an Administration plan to freeze federal employee pay and cut retirement benefits for 2.6 million federal retirees and survivors. On May 25, President Trump signed three Executive Orders that would roll back protections for our federal workforce by making it easier to fire federal employees, restricting time employees can be compensated for union work and directing agencies to negotiate tougher union contracts. Today is the first day of oral arguments in a lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, challenging the executive orders.)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/unions-seek-end-trump-executive-orders-on-federal-employee-work-rules/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On May 25, Trump signed the orders that included provisions that make it easier to fire federal employees; prohibit an employee’s ability to file a grievance over a poor performance rating; lessen the time union representatives will be able to act on a member’s behalf during work hours, and set time limits for labor negotiations. In addition, performance would become a more important factor than seniority when it comes to layoffs. . .Bob Reiter, head of the Chicago Federation of Labor, said the orders — especially limiting the interactions of union members during work hours — show the hypocrisy of the president. “You can’t say you’re for the American worker, it’s a complete joke. To use President Trump’s words: Sad,” Reiter said Wednesday at a news conference held at the CFL’s downtown office. National Treasury Employees Union attorney Michael J. McAuley said what many people may not know about the federal unions is that no one is forced to join and that federal unions don’t bargain over pay, retirement or health insurance benefits, which are all decided by Congress. Federal unions handle mostly working conditions and due process related issues. What the executive orders are really about, according to McAuley: “They want to take the unions and decrease their powers significantly so our membership is intimidated and afraid and finds us irrelevant so that when it comes time to go to the polls … we don’t have the ability to deliver our membership’s votes,” he said.)

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/07/brauner-most-conspicuous-of-governors-struggling-in-2018.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The man in most dire straits at present is Illinois Republican governor Bruce Rauner, whose second-quarter approval ratio is 27/60 — third-worst in the country, behind term-limited Republican Mary Fallin of Oklahoma and retiring Democrat Dan Malloy of Connecticut. Rauner’s popularity has not improved a whit since his very narrow March primary win over little-known conservative legislator Jeanne Ives. And his fabulous wealth won’t save him against his even more fabulously wealthy Democratic opponent, J.B. Pritzker (who outspent the incumbent by a $20.1 million to $7.8 million margin in the second quarter). Aside from his poor numbers (in both approval ratings and horse-race polls), Rauner must also deal with a minor-party conservative candidate sure to deny him some votes, particularly given his rare-for-a-Republican pro-choice stance.)

The 300+ attendees included John Cabello, Brad Cole, Dan Cronin, Demetra DeMonte, Kirk Dillard, Ron Gidwitz, Dan Hampton, David MacNeil, Richard Porter, Todd Ricketts, Skip Saviano, Tim Schneider, Mickey Straub, and Dave Tornga. These resolutions, while not binding, send a message to the politicians and legislature in Springfield that law abiding gun owners have had enough of unwanted attacks against us and the Second Amendment. The ISRA understands that the DuPage county board is considering a resolution in support of the Second Amendment. We are encouraging our members to ask their local county board members to vote in favor of passing this resolution. (DIERSEN: I live in District 4. My representatives on the DuPage County Board are Grant Eckhoff, Tim Elliott, and Amy Grant.)

GUNS
— BEYOND OUTRAGEOUS: Historic gun show homeless after new firearm policy at fairgrounds – Chris Eger (DIERSEN: Those who work against the Second Amendment plank in the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform almost always also work against the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and the rest of the planks in the IRP platform.)
https://www.guns.com/2018/07/24/historic-gun-show-homeless-after-new-firearm-policy-at-fairgrounds/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: An Illinois gun group said they have been forced out of their home of over 50 years due to limits placed on their regular shows by the local fair board. The Pioneer Valley Sportsman’s Association announced this week that restrictions on new shows demanded by the DuPage County Fair Association Board have brought about the demise of their long-held gun show at the public venue. The group said they have held a monthly event at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton each October through April for a half-century but the new policy advocated by the board has gone too far and the officials refused to negotiate a compromise.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Pew Research Center finds that favorable views of the FBI have dropped 16 percentage points among Republicans since early 2017, shortly before the president took office. What’s more, negative views of the bureau have doubled within the party during the same period of time. Just 49 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents now say they have a positive opinion of the bureau, while 44 percent give it negative marks. That’s compared with 65 percent of Republicans who gave the FBI a thumbs up just 18 months ago (and 21 percent who disagreed) — about a three-to-one margin.)

Culberson and Roskam’s districts both went for Hillary Clinton, and longtime incumbent Chabot was outraised by Democratic challenger Aftab Pureval last quarter.)
