My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. — Beck’s decision to abolish merit promotions could shortchange blacks and Hispanics, aldermen warn Aldermen Chris Taliaferro and Ariel Reboyras say it makes no sense to abolish a tool used to diversify the Chicago Police Department’s supervisory ranks. – Fran Spielman (DIERSEN: The federal government uses the subjectivity in its promotion systems to promote its employees who are Democrat, and especially those who are minority, female, and/or younger. Passing the CPA examination used to be required to get promoted at IRS and GAO, but that requirement was dumped because too few minorities and women took/passed the examination.)

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sat-scores-university-of-california-requiring-sat-test-for-admission-violates-civil-rights-lawsuit-2019-12-10/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The University of California is being sued for requiring incoming students to take the SAT and ACT. The lawsuit claims that the tests have a well-known “discriminatory effect” and “exacerbate the inequities” for underrepresented students. The lawsuit says the University of California (UC) is legally obligated to provide equal access to all students. The SAT and ACT, the lawsuit says, “reflect demographic and socioeconomic characteristics like family income, parental education and race” instead of measuring “academic ability or mastery of curriculum.” The College Board, the organization behind the SAT, released a 2019 assessment of the SAT/PSAT in California that found 45% of white students scored 1,200 or above, while 12% of Latinx students and 9% of Black students got the same score. Parental education levels were also directly related to student scores — only 21% of test-takers whose parents did not receive a high school diploma met SAT benchmarks while 77% of those whose parents have graduate degrees met benchmarks.)

BELLEVILLE NEWS DEMOCRAT
— St. Clair County plans to increase spending and tax revenue. How will it affect you? – KAVAHN MANSOURI (DIERSEN: Today, I received a notice from the DuPage County Supervisor of Assessments that the assessed valuation for my home at 915 Cove Court in Wheaton has been increased by 4.75%. Sadly, I doubt very much that I could sell the home for its new $515,750 “implied fair market value.)
https://www.bnd.com/news/politics-government/article238043234.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: From 2017 to 2018, the county’s equalized assessed valuation, or the assessed value of all property, increased by about $5.1 million, or by roughly 3.17 percent. The county budget is partially designed around what officials expect to collect through property taxes. According to the St. Clair County treasurer’s office, the property tax cycle is a two-year cycle. Over the first year, the property is assigned a value reflecting its value as of Jan. 1. The tax bills are then calculated mailed and payments are distributed in the following year. Evaluation and collecting property taxes is a six-step process, starting with assessment and ending with collection.)

https://illinoisfamily.org/uncategorized/they-were-warned/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Big Marijuana and its foolish proponents easily convinced Illinois state lawmakers that legalization would decrease black market trade and ease the burden on our criminal justice system. IFI warned them that this naive notion was contradicted by the facts, and we shared ample evidence from states that had already approved “recreational” marijuana. The evidence is clear: the black market had been thriving because of legalization. Now we read that the California cannabis industry is in big trouble and want lawmakers to do something about it. What’s their problem? The black market is doing 73 percent of California’s marijuana business – or $8.7 billion. California is considered to be the largest cannabis market in the world. While 2019 is not yet over, it’s estimated that their total marijuana sales will top nearly $12 billion. Yes, the black market is thriving on the left coast, growing by leaps and bounds, and threatening to bury a quasi-legitimate (sic) industry. So much for the influx of revenue they’re anticipating.)

FORBES
— The Impact Of Unemployment On Male Well-Being – Adi Gaskell (DIERSEN: I have been underemployed since 1976 and unemployed since 1997.)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/adigaskell/2019/12/06/the-impact-of-unemployment-on-male-wellbeing/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The impact of unemployment on well-being is well documented, although research from a few years ago suggested that it’s “good work” rather than just work that is the key to mental well-being. With the traditional gender roles presenting the role of men as the bread winner for the family, it seems logical that unemployment would pose a particular burden on men, and that was the subject of a recent report from the IZA World of Labor. The report reveals that the number of working-age men outside the labor force is on the rise around the world, with this corresponding with a rise in stress and other mental health issues, including depression and anger. Indeed, male unemployment is also linked to a range of physical health concerns, including suicide and substance abuse that are raising mortality rates across the United States. The researchers believe the issues of male unemployment are strongest among low-skilled labor, with those in work also suffering from declining wages and status. This often ultimately results in men dropping out of the labor force entirely. Many of the issues facing unemployed men revolve around a loss of hope, and such issues were consistent around the world. That many unemployed men resort to opioid abuse merely exacerbates their slide into poor mental well-being. This is often accompanied by marriage failure and a decline in civic or religious participation. One’s social standing was a key factor in this, as the image and self-esteem of many working class men is wrapped up in their hard work ethic, so being unemployed carries considerable stigma.)

— “Demand Justice” targets Federalist Society over Kavanaugh – AP
https://www.riverbender.com/sports-news/details.cfm?id=287069
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sponsored by Demand Justice, the ads target a half dozen prominent firms that sponsored the dinner, such as Kirkland & Ellis, where Kavanaugh served as a partner, as well as Sullivan & Cromwell, WilmerHale and Consovoy McCarthy, where a senior partner was recently confirmed as a federal appellate judge. The bare-knuckle ads are a rarity in the city’s genteel legal world and an example of the increasing toxicity of the political debate over Trump’s judicial nominees. Demand Justice says the ads are the beginning of a sustained campaign “to hold accountable” people who help the Federalist Society “rehabilitate a sexual predator and attack the rule of law.’’ The Federalist Society declined to comment. Carrie Severino, a longtime Federalist Society member and policy director of the conservative Judicial Crisis Network, called criticism by Demand Justice and other liberal groups a badge of honor. The Federalist group “is a successful network of conservatives and conservative lawyers that are very effective,’’ Severino said. Liberal critics “don’t like that,” she added.)

My Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in getting rid of the GAO manager who hired me in 1980, got me assigned to audits of IRS in 1986, and promoted me in 1986.)
https://www.beltwaybreakfast.com/whitehouse/2019/11/25/trump-administration-and-its-enablers-attempt-to-smear-civil-servants-not-political-holdovers/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The attempt to smear these nonpartisan civil servants is part of a long-running attempt by Trump and his allies to delegitimize the entire concept of a non-partisan civil service. It’s a project that stems both from Trump’s obsession with loyalty combined with his misguided belief that federal employees work for him, and from his administration’s goal to “deconstruct the administrative state.” It began shortly after Trump was sworn in on January 20, 2017, when his allies in conservative media began complaining about “Obama holdovers” serving on the staff of the National Security Council, and in places like the Defense Department, State Department, and pretty much every other executive branch agency. These “holdovers,” Trump allies said, were to blame for many of the president’s failures, and were part of a Democratic “deep state” working to frustrate Trump’s goals. The problem with that, of course, is that there is no such thing as a “holdover” — at least not the way Trump and his allies mean. It is possible for an agency official to be a holdover from a previous administration. When President Obama was preparing to take office in January 2009, he asked then-Bush Defense Secretary Robert Gates to remain in his position. Gates, a political appointee, was literally held over from the previous administration. But that’s not what the term means to Trump and his allies. To them, “holdovers” are the career civil servants and subject matter experts who keep the government running. Such people been a fixture in American government since 1883, when then-President Chester Arthur signed the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, which created a competitive exam process for selecting government employees and made it illegal to fire them for political reasons. Arthur was an unlikely booster for the idea of a professional civil service. He was a “stalwart,” part of a faction of the Republican Party that supported the “spoils” system, which gave the president — and the party controlling the White House — complete control of federal hiring. He was elected as James Garfield’s running mate to placate those Republicans who were concerned about Garfield’s potential for turning off the spoils system’s spigot of graft. But the abundance of patronage jobs — and the president’s control over them — ended up costing Garfield his life in September 1881, months after he’d been shot twice by Charles Guiteau, a mentally ill man who’d attacked Garfield in a Washington, D.C. train station because he’d been denied the job of consul to Vienna or Paris. The horror of Garfield’s assassination galvanized public support for a civil service bill, and Arthur — who’d been the subject of unfounded suspicions after his name was invoked by Garfield’s assassin — signed it. Since then, nonpartisan civil servants have been a fact of life for presidents. Most have understood that the career professionals who staff the executive branch departments have a vital function. But not Trump. For Trump, having served in government during Barack Obama’s presidency is enough to cast suspicion on any federal employee, and his suspicion of career professionals has extended throughout the executive branch. At agencies large and small, policy planning meetings are routinely restricted to political appointees, and some policies — like the proposed (and dead-in-the-water) merger between the Office of Personnel Management and the General Services Administration — have been designed to give the White House more control over hiring. Many of those policies have not come to fruition, but the goal of getting rid of “disloyal” employees has now become an article of faith for Trump defenders. A Senate trial will give Republicans yet more reasons to attack career professionals as disloyal. The next election will determine whether punishment for “disloyalty” will become more than a conservative pipe dream.)
