http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/realestate/elitestreet/ct-re-elite-street-dwayne-wade-matteson-20180724-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A four-bedroom, 2,280-square-foot house in south suburban Matteson that is owned by basketball star Dwyane Wade has been on the market since May for $269,900. A South Side native who starred at Richards High School in Oak Lawn before attending Marquette University, Wade, 36, has played in the NBA for 16 years, most of the time for the Miami Heat. He played a year for the Bulls in 2016-2017. Public records show that Wade bought the house new in 2006 with his then-wife, Siohvaughn Funches, for $390,000. After the couple’s divorce, Wade was awarded the house in 2014. Now, Wade is trying to sell the house, which is in Matteson’s Newbury Estates neighborhood. The house has three baths, a large foyer with a vaulted ceiling, hardwood floors throughout, a family room with a gas fireplace and a wet bar, and a master suite with a private balcony, a large walk-in closet and a tray ceiling overlooking the family room. Wade first listed the house in May for $290,000 and last month cut his asking price to $269,900.)

https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180802/sauers-resignation-doesnt-guarantee-a-democratic-win-in-51st-district-race
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sauer’s immediate successor in the legislature will be selected by a group formed by Lake County Republican Party leader Mark Shaw and Barrington Township Republican committeeman Chris Geissler, representing the small Cook County portion of the 51st District. Shaw doesn’t know if the GOP will nominate the same person to run in November, which is a separate process. Shaw plans to consult Republican House Leader Jim Durkin on the decisions. Republican officials typically would seek applicants, Shaw said. But time is short because ballots must be finalized and certified by Aug. 30.)

The Pioneer Valley Sportsman’s Association announced this week that restrictions on new shows demanded by the DuPage County Fair Association Board have brought about the demise of their long-held gun show at the public venue. The group said they have held a monthly event at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton each October through April for a half-century but the new policy advocated by the board has gone too far and the officials refused to negotiate a compromise.)

https://www.nbcnews.com/card/pew-poll-gop-sours-fbi-n894016
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Pew Research Center finds that favorable views of the FBI have dropped 16 percentage points among Republicans since early 2017, shortly before the president took office. What’s more, negative views of the bureau have doubled within the party during the same period of time. Just 49 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents now say they have a positive opinion of the bureau, while 44 percent give it negative marks. That’s compared with 65 percent of Republicans who gave the FBI a thumbs up just 18 months ago (and 21 percent who disagreed) — about a three-to-one margin.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Race-by-race rankings are moving several GOP incumbents into the tossup category. Among them are Texas Rep. John Culberson, Illinois Rep. Peter Roskam, Indiana Rep. Steve Chabot, and Iowa Rep. David Young. Culberson and Roskam’s districts both went for Hillary Clinton, and longtime incumbent Chabot was outraised by Democratic challenger Aftab Pureval last quarter.)

https://www.federaltimes.com/federal-oversight/congress/2018/07/19/house-moves-forward-on-feds-restricting-bills/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The second bill, the Modern Employment Reform, Improvement and Transformation (MERIT) Act, would reduce the advance notice that an agency must provide to an employee it intends to discipline or remove from 30 days to 15 days. Employees then have, at maximum, seven days to answer to the proposed action against them. “The Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 created a special authority to remove or demote poor performers. However, the GAO found that removing a poor performer under this special authority, which requires a performance improvement plan, can take six months to a year, and sometimes significantly longer. This does not reflect the significant time during an appeal, should things not proceed during the performance improvement plan,” said Rep. Paul Mitchell, R-Mich. “This bill repeals that special authority.” Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., characterized the bill as an attack on federal employees and their due process rights. “The provisions of H.R. 559 would allow broad congressional edict to micromanage agency personnel procedures and limit the ability of the federal workforce to seek justice when treated unfairly by management. The bill does not afford federal workers accused of performance or disciplinary issues adequate time to mount a credible defense and blurs the procedural line between performance-based and disciplinary actions,” the AFGE letter said. The bill passed on a vote of 19 to 11.)

GOVERNMENT EXECUTIVE
— GAO: VA Is Letting Senior Officials Off the Hook While Disproportionately Punishing Whistleblowers – Eric Katz (DIERSEN: I blew the whistle on political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation while I worked for GAO 1980-1997, for IRS 1971-1980, and for the Post Office 1966-1969. To punish me, a) my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)
https://www.govexec.com/management/2018/07/va-letting-senior-officials-hook-while-disproportionately-punishing-whistleblowers-audit-finds/149897/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congress has for years worked to reform the disciplinary process at VA, with President Trump last year signing into law new procedures that expedite firings and make it easier for the department to prove its case. Those changes may not have taken into account internal failings within VA, the Government Accountability Office found, as it consistently fails to document evidence against employees and notify them of their rights. Additionally, while last year’s Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act sought to protect employees who attempted to shine a light on shortcomings within the agency, GAO found whistleblowers were far more likely to face adverse actions after reporting misconduct. One in 10 employees who brought issues before the Office of Special Counsel were slapped with discipline that same year, compared to one out of 100 VA employees overall.)

Pence’s speech, titled “Tax Cuts to Put America First,” is part of a series sponsored by America First Policies, a non-profit organization that promotes the policies of the Trump Administration — the Rosemont stop is the 17th on the tour. Other speakers at the event included U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., and Gov. Bruce Rauner, who was to introduce Pence. At previous speeches in Iowa and Kansas City, Pence talked about energy, agriculture and labor plans that were all implemented to achieve Trump’s campaign promise to “Make America great again.” In Rosemont, people from around the state, decked out in flag shawls and bright red “Make America Great Again” baseball caps, waited to hear from the vice president.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Almost immediately after Pence took the stage, protesters inside the Westin O’Hare grand ballroom made their presence known. In total, Pence’s speech was interrupted five times by protesters, who were escorted out of the building by police. One woman held a yellow flag that read, “Trump and Pence must go.” When Pence began to praise U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, of Wheaton, a man said, “Has anyone seen Peter Roskam? I haven’t seen him. Where is he?” Each time, the crowd of about 600 chanted “USA! USA!” Tickets to the event, called “Tax Cuts to Put America First,” were free and available by registering on the website of America First Policies, the group connected to the pro-Trump America First Action super PAC. “Thanks for coming out today. I’m really grateful for almost everybody that came,” Pence joked to the crowd. “I respect everybody that came. That’s what freedom sounds like.” Rosemont authorities said no one was charged, and they described the protest of some 100 people outside the hotel as peaceful. Police, at the behest of the Secret Service, pushed protesters across River Road to the east sidewalk northeast of the hotel. Rosemont public safety officers used their bikes as crowd control. Pence’s caravan used a back entrance, avoiding the protesters. “We are advocating getting rid of the Trump/Pence regime through persistent, persistent nonviolent protests,” said Tricey Morelli, spokesman for the Chicago chapter of Refuse Fascism.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As most of you know, financial planners often say that 70% of current income is the best estimate. My calculation was significantly higher, namely, 82%. I arrived at that figure because I think the reasons for that lower figure are outdated. As I explained: You need to continue to save for your later years because you will likely have 20, 30 or more years left to live but you may not be investing as aggressively A third of folks in their 60’s continue to work or have encore careers and still pay into FICA Even if you stop or cut down on your work, you’ll still have travel expenses and, perhaps, significantly higher health expenses Fewer and fewer homeowners ever pay their mortgages off completely or they rent, so they still have a house payment.)

MARKET WATCH
— Is early retirement possible? – DANA ANSPACH
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/is-early-retirement-possible-2018-07-11

(FROM THE ARTICLE: One of the biggest challenges to early retirement is figuring out how to pay for health care. Regarding health care coverage, “early” retirement would be before age 65, at which time most Americans become eligible for Medicare. Unless you’re lucky enough to have employer-covered retiree health insurance, you’ll pay hefty premiums until you become Medicare-eligible. If you’re exiting the workforce before age 65, plan on budgeting $500 to $1,000 a month per person to purchase health insurance. Instead of shelling out $1,000 a month, some early retirees are opting for retirement jobs. Something part-time, low-stress and low-pay, but with benefits. This type of job can help bridge the gap from early retirement to Medicare age. Once on Medicare, you still pay premiums, but they’re more affordable, often less than half of what you were paying before going on Medicare.)

They stress that my IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— OUTSTANDINGLY, 19 REPUBLICANS HELPED SPONSOR WHEATON’S INDEPENDENCE DAY FIREWORKS AND PARADE! Illinois Republican Party leader and Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar contributed $500, Judge Jeff MacKay contributed $250, and DuPage County Forest Preserve Commissioner Tim Whelan contributed $150. Bob Berlin, Dan Cronin, Tim Elliott, Amy Grant, Gwen Henry, Paul Hinds, Marty Keller, Deanne Mazzochi, Dave Molitor, John Monino, Chris Nybo, Peter Roskam, Darlene Ruscitti, Phil Suess, Kevin Wiley, and Karen Wilson each contributed $100.

As the $2,500 Star sponsor, DuPage County Republicans got credit for sponsoring the Tunes of Glory bagpipers and the Wheaton North and South High School band entries in the parade. DuPage Republicans again had a booth at the fireworks the evening before the parade. Those who stopped by included Governor Rauner and the First Lady, Erika Harold, Amy Grant, and Marty Keller. Earlier, I had the honor of hand delivering flyers to residences on the parade route, including Main Street and two blocks east and west of Main Street south of Harrison Street, and businesses that listed the Republican entries in the parade, the Republican sponsors, and the amount that they contributed. The flyers were printed courtesy of Alpha Graphics.

Republican elected officials and candidates in the parade included Peter Roskam, Evelyn Sanguinetti, Erika Harold, Mike Connelly, Peter Breen, Jeanne Ives, Amy Grant, Paul Hinds, James Mendrick, Grant Eckhoff, Tim Elliott, Chris Zaruba, Tim Whelan, Jeff McKay, Karen Wilson, Gary Muehlfelt, Sal Falbo, John Monino, Nick Nathwani, as well as Marty Keller and the Milton Township Republican Central Committee. – Dave Diersen
