I was able to earn a college degree because I took college preparatory courses at Crete-Monee High School, got an ACT score of 24, graduated in the upper 20% of my class, and got accepted by UIC in 1966 and then by NIU in 1969. I was able to pay for my UIC and NIU expenses by working for 25 months part-time and for 9 months full-time during three summers delivering mail for the Park Forest Post Office. I lived with my parents in their Crete home for 31 months and at NIU for 16 months. I graduated debt-free with a bachelor’s degree in management and owning a 1969 Dodge Charger SE in August of 1970 even though I was not viewed as being college material.
