November 11 Morning Edition

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD IN NAPERVILLE SUN: DIERSEN HEADLINE: Anti-Trumps crow about their success in a) promoting hatred against Trump in Naperville and b) getting voters in Naperville to punish Trump by voting for Democrats.
https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-midterm-results-by-precinct-st-1111-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite a strong showing in Naperville in 2014 and 2016, unofficial DuPage numbers show Roskam took only half the Naperville precincts in 2018, helping propel Democrat Sean Casten to a victory. Results aren’t deemed official until all provisional ballots have been counted and validated. The deadline for that is Nov. 20. Hultgren’s previously red precinct map in Wheatland Township in Naperville went all blue, based on unofficial Will numbers, to give Democratic challenger Lauren Underwood of Naperville the win. Foster also gained momentum in the 11th Congressional race this year, picking up four DuPage Township precincts and a Wheatland precinct that in Naperville traditionally had been red for at least the last decade, unofficial results show. Foster performed much better in the Lisle and Naperville Township portions of the city, losing in three precincts Tuesday to his Republican challenger Nick Stella, and unofficial figures indicate the losses in those precincts were by 10 or fewer votes. Jim Ruhl, chairman of the Naperville Township Republican Organization, said what drove suburban voters to the polls was more related to personality than economics. “You cannot deny we have record job growth,” he said. And Ruhl expects voters will flip back in the next election cycle when the people they’ve elected fail to perform. “The very politics going on in Chicago are what will be coming. It will have a big impact on the DuPage County area,” Ruhl said. . .Several sections of the city remain primarily Republican. Spots where voters consistently vote Republican at the precinct level are located on the east side of Naperville between Chicago Avenue and Hobson Road and between South Washington Street and Plainfield-Naperville Road south of Oswego Road. Other pockets are located north of Book Road in the area near Naperville Presbyterian Church, in the south near Winding Creek Park, and in the area east of McDowell Grove Forest Preserve. . .Determining how a person will vote depends on multiple factors, including education, race, gender and socio-economic status, said Suzanne Chod, associate professor of political science and coordinator of gender and women’s studies at North Central College in Naperville. She said generally the more educated a person is the more likely he or she will vote for a Democrat. “Less educated people are more likely to vote Republican. Education is the biggest predictor of voting habits,” Chod said. People of color, women, and those who are on the higher end of the socio-economic scale, she said, also are inclined to vote Democratic. From a political science perspective, it’s no surprise Democratic candidates did well in Naperville. Chod said voters in suburban communities surrounding large cities tend to be wealthier and more educated. The fact that more people of color are moving into Naperville checks another box off the list. Kerr said Naperville’s demographics are changing as evidenced by the 800 people who attended a Naperville interfaith service last week in reaction to hate-motivated gun attack during a Jewish Shabbat service in Pittsburgh. The Jewish congregation was joined by the spiritual leaders of 11 faiths from the area, including Mormons, Hindus, Muslims and Catholics. “That’s the community we live in now,” Kerr said. “They’re concerned about people besides themselves.”)

MOTLEY FOOL
— 3 Ways to Increase Your Chances of Getting a Raise for 2019 Want a pay boost next year? Here’s how to score one. – Maurie Backman (DIERSEN: Federal employees cannot get significant pay increases by just asking for them. They must apply for promotions. My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were beyond furious in 1986 when I successfully applied for a promotion to GS-13, currently $96,403/year. Because of that, they “pulled out all the stops” to stop me from ever getting a promotion to GS-14, currently $113,920/year. In 1987, they forced the GAO manager who had promoted me to GS-13 in 1986 to retire. He had hired me in 1980 and had gotten me assigned to audits of IRS in 1986. In 1989, they really “pulled out all the stops” to get rid of me. They threw me off audits of IRS, gave me unfair performance expectations, and gave me an unfair performance appraisal. In 1989, if Henry Hyde had not intervened for me, they might have succeeded in getting rid of me. Because it frustrated their tremendous efforts to get rid of me, they were beyond furious a) when in 1990, I successfully applied to work for the young Jewish female GS-15 in the office who was responsible for audits of federal financial institution regulators, b) when later in 1990, I became a Certified Fraud Examiner, c) when in 1994, I became a Certified Government Financial Manager, d) when in 1996, I became a Certified Financial Services Auditor, and e) when in 1997, I became a Forensic Accountant. They were especially beyond furious in 1997 when I earned a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT.)

— Rebuilding the shell-shocked Illinois GOP – Editorial
https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-edit-election-illinois-future-republicans-20181107-story.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: What’s an Illinois Republican Party to do? Recoil and tremble? Or unite and rebuild? Here’s the first step: Mend the fracture between establishment and conservative Republicans — Rauner supporters and those who backed his primary opponent, Rep. Jeanne Ives — and begin the rebuilding process. Find common ground and bury old grudges. Coalesce around new, fresh leadership in the House and Senate. The talent is there. House and Senate members who managed to fend off challengers — Sens. Neil Anderson of Andalusia and John Curran of Downers Grove, along with Reps. Mark Batinick of Plainfield, Tom Morrison of Palatine, Tom Demmer of Dixon, Grant Wehrli of Naperville, to name a few — will have to retread this party. And they’ll have to do it without worrying about the next election. Don’t go weak. Go big — that is, as big as a minority party can go. Give the people of Illinois fresh ideas for fixing this state’s government and economy. . .The GOP can have its comeback. The process will be a grind. Given the lingering hard feelings between conservatives and the more moderate establishment, even agreeing on leadership post-Rauner will be grueling. But the infighting that has pitted Republicans against one another needs to stop. On Tuesday, that intramural acrimony within the GOP helped the Democrats. But Tuesday is history. Republicans, stop the self-destruction. Unify. Rebuild. Start now.)

— Rep. Bost’s office confirms Trump visit to (Murphysboro) October 27 – ISAAC SMITH (DIERSEN: How would the religious, government, political, and financial leaders in your municipality, in your township/ward, and in your county react if Trump came to your municipality, to your township/ward, or to your county?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: This sparked outcry from some on City Council. Councilman Adam Loos drafted a four-page resolution declaring Trump unwelcome. However, he later rescinded his request to have it placed on Tuesday’s City Council agenda because some council members withdrew support for the resolution. It wouldn’t have mattered, because after deep consideration and notification that there would be considerable civil disobedience from people supporting and opposing the president’s visit, Mayor Mike Henry canceled Tuesday’s council meeting, electing to reschedule it after Trump’s visit. Henry said there was not a threat of violence, but those from the community action group The Flyover Social Center disagreed. The group, which is vocally opposed to Trump’s visit and politics, on Saturday received a business card for white supremacist group Patriot Front. They took this as a subtle threat of violence against their group.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Among those with the most at stake in the Congressional midterm elections are the rank and file of the unions that represent the Federal Government’s two-million-member workforce. Since President Trump took office 21 months ago, they have been the target of him and allies like former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who served on his transition team. Mr. Gingrich urged the President to wage a “straight-out war” aimed at ending what he called “the job for life” with the Federal civil service. Mr. Trump has canceled a Federal pay raise, proposed budgets to cut workers’ health and retirement benefits and issued executive orders to eliminate employee protections that evolved over decades of collective bargaining.)

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/first-read/americans-are-divided-over-everything-except-division-n922511
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The poll asked respondents who they blame for the nation’s disunited state and when you look at their answers through the frame of Donald Trump’s presidency, sharp divisions emerge. Among the 30 percent of respondents in the poll who strongly approve of President Trump’s job performance, there is a pretty clear line of blame for the nation’s divided nature. The “Democratic Party/Liberals” lead the way with this group, as one might expect. Next on the list is former President “Barack Obama.” Trump’s supporters also cast a somewhat wider net. They give some blame to “Godless”ness, “The Media,” and “The People/General Public of America.” Some even go as far as mentioning “Donald Trump,” but on the whole, there is a distinct partisan cast to the list. On the other side of the Trump divide, the 43 percent who strongly disapprove of President Trump’s job performance, we can see an even clearer picture. Donald Trump’s name stands apart from every other option on the list of potential causes with this group. Following behind the president is the “Republican Party/Conservatives” but no other answer rates very high. This is a distinctly blue view of the nation’s disunity. And among the 27 percent of respondents who neither strongly approve nor disapprove of Trump’s job performance, the president takes most of the blame, but his opponents take a hit as well.)

— The Trump trap – Republicans duck president in key House races
https://www.politicususa.com/2018/10/17/special-report-the-trump-trap-republicans-duck-president-in-key-house-races-2.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Six-term Representative Peter Roskam has a good sense of how voters in Illinois’ 6th Congressional District feel about the president. Despite re-electing the Republican congressman in 2016, they backed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over Trump by nearly 7 percentage points. The district typifies the battlegrounds where Republican candidates face anti-Trump headwinds: a fast-growing suburb west of Chicago with a median income near $100,000. Roskam has made no statements of support for Trump on his website or in posts this year to his social media accounts. He acknowledges that associating himself with the president might do more harm than good. Having Trump campaign for him in the district “obviously wouldn’t be helpful,” he said in an interview. Roskam has criticized Trump’s tariffs on imported goods and has decried the administration’s separation of immigrant children from parents. After Trump held a July press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin and refused to condemn Putin for interference in the 2016 U.S. elections, Roskam called Trump’s performance “an affront to American democracy.” But Roskam notes that he also backs the president on issues important to pro-Trump voters, such as raising military spending and lowering taxes. In an August tweet, Roskam described as “absurd” a statement by his Democratic opponent comparing Trump with al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden. “This district is discerning,” Roskam said, and voters want a candidate who will represent their interests independent of the president. But Roskam’s reluctance to embrace Trump isn’t enough for some of the anti-Trump Republicans he’s trying to capture. “Peter Roskam has distanced himself from Trump, but he doesn’t stand up to him,” said Bill Wentz, 73, a lifelong Republican and former federal government lawyer. Roskam hasn’t done enough to fight the president on economic policies that Wentz says undermine traditional Republican support for free markets by picking “winners and losers.” He also is uncomfortable with Trump’s failure to fully embrace U.S. intelligence agencies’ finding that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. elections. Wentz’s answer: vote for Roskam’s Democratic opponent, Sean Casten.)
