CHAMPAIGN/URBANA NEWS GAZETTE
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Jim Day picks Pat Brady and Jim Thacker to talk about John Cox. Cox and I served together on the Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee. On July 5, 2003, Cox came with the other four announced candidates for U.S. Senate (Chirinjeev Kathuria, Andy McKenna, Jim Oberweis, and Jack Ryan) to a picnic that I arranged in the Prairie Path Park in my precinct for voters in my precinct, in Jeanne Ive’s precinct to the east, and in Debra Olson’s precinct to the west. The 200 attendees included Randy Hultgren. We can forever ask ourselves, “What if Trump had endorsed Ives?”)
http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/columns/2018-06-10/jim-dey-perennial-illinois-office-seeker-finds-more-success-out-west.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Those who recall Cox’s political activities in Illinois have watched with amazement as he’s made his run in California. “He was one of those guys who was always kind of out there running,” said Chicago lawyer and former state GOP Chairman Pat Brady. Rockford political consultant Jim Thacker, who worked both for and against Cox, described him as a “self-made guy” who “always had the credentials and the smarts” to be a credible candidate. “The circumstances were never right for him,” Thacker said. “I didn’t know he had even moved to California. But he’s sure getting his 15 minutes of fame now.” Cox’s endless runs for public office here created an image as that of a political gadfly, someone not to be taken seriously by the news media or the political establishment.)

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/06/10/may-2018-the-third-consecutive-month-of-record-background-checks/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There were 19 consecutive months of record background checks under Barack Obama. Those began in May 2015 and lasted through November 2016. They were driven by a non-stop assault on the Second Amendment, characterized by attempts to secure all-out bans on certain types of weapons and “high capacity” magazines, as well as efforts to implement universal background checks and other controls. Such fears largely vanished under the Trump administration and record levels of background checks faded. Then came the February 14, 2018, Parkland school shooting, which was immediately followed by leftist celebrities, student gun control activists, and the establishment media relentlessly pushing for all-out bans on certain types of weapons and “high capacity” magazines, as well as efforts to implement universal background checks and other controls. Now background checks for gun sales are surging, NRA membership is up to 6 million, and donations to gun rights’ groups are increasing.)

FED SMITH
— Pay Parity and a 2019 Pay Raise for Federal Employees – Ralph R. Smith
https://www.fedsmith.com/2018/06/10/pay-parity-2019-pay-raise-federal-employees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The other potential factor is politics. Federal employee unions are often the public face and out in front on articulating arguments on behalf of federal employees. The unions are often supporting one political party (Democrats) over the other (Republicans). While Republicans are often thought of as the strong supporters for higher military spending, etc., there are no unions in front of the public spending time and money on behalf of one political party. That may be a conundrum for federal employees and their representatives. It can work out well, particularly for unions as an institution, when Democrats occupy the White House and one or both Houses of Congress. At other times, it can be a disadvantage if the federal workforce is perceived as a political force instead of a politically neutral, professional cadre of people supporting the current administration in power. We do not know, of course, what the final pay raise will be for military or civilian employees in 2019. If I were betting on the outcome, I would feel secure in assuming that whatever the percentage, it will be higher for military than for civilians.)

NEW STRAITS TIMES
— Can our retirement funds sustain our golden years? – Rajen Devadason (DIERSEN: Have you slashed your lifestyle expectations? Since 1997, when I was 49 years old, my income, and therefore, my lifestyle has been dramatically slashed. Since 1997, my Civil Service Retirement System pension has been only 41% of what my salary was in 1997 in today’s dollars, that is, only $51,864 instead of $125,325.)
https://www.nst.com.my/lifestyle/sunday-vibes/2018/06/378452/can-our-retirement-funds-sustain-our-golden-years

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Aspiring to improve Most of us, however, don’t wish to maintain our lifestyle. We aspire to improve it year by year! This desired escalation in lifestyle tacks on a few percentage points to the appropriate inflation rate for our lives every year. So by way of illustration, if our long run national inflation rate is 3.6 per cent a year, and your specific desired escalation of lifestyle is 2.4 per cent a year, then your annual personal inflation rate = 3.6 per cent + 2.4 per cent = 6 per cent. Then, using the Rule of 72, we find that you’ll need twice as much money in 12 years (= 72 / 6) to live the life you want in 2030. So, if you’re 25 years old and spending RM2,500 a month in 2018, it is straightforward to work out, using our Rule of 72, that in 12 years (age 37 in 2030), you’ll need RM5,000 a month. What is staggering to comprehend though is 12 years after that in 2042, you won’t be able to comfortably get by on RM5,000 + RM2,500 = RM7,500. No. You’ll need twice your needed amount at age 37 at age 49, which is RM5,000 x 2 = RM10,000 a month! Then at 61, you’ll want RM20,000, and so on. The longer you live, the more money you’ll need unless you choose (or more likely are forced) to slash your lifestyle expectations.)

— Rauner trails Pritzker in latest poll – SARAH HAYDEN (DIERSEN: What has Rauner done so far to encourage those who voted for Trump and/or for Ives to help reelect him on November 6, 2018? For example, has he offered to sign a pledge that he will not take any action against Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform? For example, has he offered to attend a summit meeting with those who endorsed Trump, those who endorsed Ives, and the conservative leaders in Illinois? What does Rauner say to those who increasingly conclude that he does NOT want those who voted for Trump and/or for Ives to help reelect him on November 6, 2018? Increasingly, it looks like Rauner is running against those who support Trump and against those who support the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and other planks in the IRP platform, that is, it increasing looks like he is running as an anti-conservative, that is, it increasing looks like he is running as anti-Republican.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner is trailing Democratic gubernatorial rival J.B. Pritzker by at least 15 points, according to the May edition of The Illinois Poll. The telephone survey contacted 1,208 voters May 22-24. While Rauner holds narrow leads in northern and central Illinois, he has surged in the southern part of the state, with a 46-to-30 percent lead over Pritzker. Predictably, Pritzker is leading Rauner 76 to 11 percent in Democratic Chicago and suburban Cook County. The poll also asked residents whether they believe Rauner deserves to be re-elected to a second term in office. Thirty four percent of respondents said yes, while 53 percent said no.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Residents of some blue states may get a surprisingly big tax cut thanks to workarounds state lawmakers are crafting to subvert a controversial new cap on deductions for state and local taxes. In places like New York, taxpayers will not only be able to claim the same break as before Republicans imposed a new $10,000 cap on the deduction, but they will also be able to sidestep longstanding federal rules on exactly when the deduction may be taken.)

THE DAY
— Too much news? Not for everyone – Jennifer Rubin (DIERSEN: Should I write a book about my critics/opponents who focus on discouraging everyone from reading GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails? They want you read only what they publish or they bless. More than just being overjoyed about, they played major roles in ending my TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairmanship, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee membership, Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster service, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee membership, and American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board membership.)
https://www.theday.com/article/20180610/OP04/180619985

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Pew Research Center is out with a fascinating poll on “news fatigue.” The poll finds: “Almost seven-in-ten Americans (68%) feel worn out by the amount of news there is these days, compared with only three-in-ten who say they like the amount of news they get,” according to the report. “The portion expressing feelings of information overload is in line with how Americans felt during the 2016 presidential election, when a majority expressed feelings of exhaustion from election coverage.” On one hand, this is understandable given the constant drumbeat of scandal and outrage. On the other hand, no one forces Americans to watch or read the news. It is a choice whether to consume it or not, and judging from those stunning poll results (e.g. only 43 percent polled last year could name a single Supreme Court justice), many people do a fine job of being uninformed. Nevertheless, to the degree one attempts to be a diligent citizen, it seems to many that they are drinking out of the proverbial firehose. Looking a little closer, we see an interesting phenomenon. Distaste for President Donald Trump — and perhaps glee at his failures — makes Democrats more eager to ingest as much news as they can. “While majorities of both Republicans and Democrats express news fatigue, Republicans are feeling it more,” according the Pew’s findings. “Roughly three-quarters (77%) of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents feel worn out over how much news there is, compared with about six-in-ten Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (61%). This elevated fatigue among Republicans tracks with them having less enthusiasm than Democrats for the 2018 elections. The lack of interest in the news and in the election suggests that an outsize segment of Republicans don’t want to hear that much about, or take stock of, the president and Congress they elected. Yes, we can sympathize that it is stressful to see someone you were warned not to vote for display just about every rotten trait you chose to overlook during the campaign (e.g. dishonesty, vulgarity, racism). Ironically, the less-informed people feel the most overwhelmed, even if they don’t actually consume a whole lot of news. (“While a majority of those who follow the news most of the time (62%) are feeling worn out by the news, a substantially higher portion (78%) of those who less frequently get news say they are fatigued by the amount of it that they see.”) There may be a strong segment of the electorate that is trying to hide from the news — but just can’t. The demographic groups that most strongly supported Trump are now the most exhausted by the news. “Some demographic groups — most notably white Americans — are more likely than others to feel exhausted by the news,” the poll finds. “Nearly three-quarters (73%) of white Americans express fatigue with the amount of news, much higher than among both Hispanic (55%) and black Americans (55%). Women are also somewhat more likely than men to feel worn out (71% vs. 64%, respectively).” There is some good news in this for the anti-Trump forces. It seems they are more energized (perhaps by a sense of vindication or by a desire to stop the Trump madness) than Republicans, who, gosh, just don’t seem to want to be reminded of what and whom they voted for. They are not “tired of winning.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Indiana Republican Party, by an overwhelming margin, reaffirmed Saturday its commitment to marriage “between a man and a woman” as the preferred structure for Hoosier families. In so doing, the 1,494 GOP delegates attending the party’s biennial state convention turned aside a revised “strong families” platform plank, proposed by Gov. Eric Holcomb’s party leadership, that expressed support for all adults raising children, in favor of renewing explicit support for opposite-sex marriage that first was inserted in the platform in 2014 by marriage equality opponents. The platform debate was the sole controversy at the half-day convention that also saw Secretary of State Connie Lawson, State Auditor Tera Klutz and State Treasurer Kelly Mitchell nominated as the party’s candidates for the November elections. Most delegates applauded and cheered following the voice vote that preserved the Gov. Mike Pence-era endorsement of what backers describe as “traditional” marriage.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The language was added when Vice President Mike Pence was governor. But it is omitted from the latest draft of Indiana Republican Party’s platform. Delegates will be able to vote on the platform when they meet in Evansville next weekend. GOP Chairman Kyle Hupfer tells the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette that the new draft is a “compromise” that includes language that is inclusive. He says the party’s goal was “to try not to offend anyone.” Not everyone is happy with the proposed change. Micah Clark, executive director of the socially conservative American Family Association of Indiana, called it a “weak statement” that was “pure mush.”)

Since 1966, my Democrat critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have wanted to limit my Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension. According to them, only Democrats should get CSRS pensions. AMERICAN THINKER
— Affirmative action in the control tower – Willie Shields (DIERSEN: I should write a book about Affirmative Action at GAO, at IRS, and at the Post Office.)
https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2018/06/affirmative_action_in_the_control_tower.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I don’t fly. When folks ask me why, the short answer is that I know too much: I’m a former FAA air traffic controller. It’s been recently reported that the FAA is now actively recruiting new trainees to work in the towers and control rooms directing airplanes and that the criteria they now utilize to screen applicants is a curiously absurd “biographical questionnaire.” Jason L. Riley in the Wall Street Journal: “A recently completed six-month investigation by Fox Business Network found that the Federal Aviation Administration has quietly moved away from merit-based hiring criteria in order to increase the number of women and minorities who staff airport control towers. The changes come despite the fact that the FAA’s own internal reports describe the evidence for changing the hiring process as “weak.” Until 2013, the FAA gave hiring preference to controller applicants who earned a degree from one of its Collegiate Training Initiative schools and scored high enough on an eight-hour screening test called the Air Traffic Selection and Training exam, or AT-SAT, which measures cognitive skills. The Obama administration, however, determined that the process excluded too many from minority groups. In May 2013, the FAA’s civil rights administrator issued “barrier analyses” of the agency’s employment procedures, which recommended “revising how the AT-SAT is used in establishing best-qualified lists.” By the start of last year, the FAA was using a biographical questionnaire (BQ) to initially vet potential hires. The questions – “How many sports did you play in high school?”, “What has been the major cause of your failures?” – seem designed to elicit stories of personal disadvantage or family hardship rather than determine success on the job.” I can tell you with absolute certainty that the FAA Air Traffic Control Division has been down with the affirmative action program for a long time. The PATCO controllers’ strike during the summer of 1981 seemingly gave the “fire whitey” gang the opening they craved. There was one problem. The air traffic system needed to get back up and running smoothly, and especially safely, so that Ronald Reagan’s mass firing would look reasonable. So they quickly hired aviation-experienced people, including pilots and experienced military air traffic controllers. I was one of them. Granted, some of these well qualified new guys were black, but no one would look upon this new controller work force and call it a model of so-called diversity. The big push for hiring other than pale males would have to wait. Safety first, as it were. A few things happened in the next few years. First, the FAA stopped reporting aviation incidents, including near mid-air collisions and runway incursions. When safety incidents are under-reported or deceitfully downgraded, the system starts to look like perfection, and the FAA will gladly report, as it frequently does, that it is “The Safest System In The World.” These people want the flying public to skate out onto the ice, even as they are lying about how thin the ice is, and while we are at it, how warm it is today.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/02/us/politics/gavin-newsom-antonio-villaraigosa-california.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: And the leading contenders to win on Tuesday are particularly burdened by political and personal baggage that offer another contrast with Mr. Brown as he prepares to retire to his ranch. Two of the Democrats — Mr. Villaraigosa and Gavin Newsom, the lieutenant governor — were involved in high-profile affairs while they were in public office in the mid-2000s, episodes that have been raised against them during a candidate debate and in a handful of advertisements at a time of heightened awareness of sexual misconduct.)

FORBES
— President Trump’s Common Sense Reform Of The Civil Service System Is Just The Start (Hopefully) – Rob Berger (DIERSEN: Assessing job performance is extremely subjective. Democrats use that subjectivity a) to advance Democrats who are minority, female, and/or younger and b) to get rid of Republicans who are White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. Of course, since 1966, my critics/opponents have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that my Democrat superiors in the federal government took adverse actions against me because I am a “poor-performing employee.” In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

— Are Your Highly Engaged Employees At Greater Risk Of Burnout? – Jeanne Grunert (DIERSEN: Very few of my superiors, supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates in the federal government were engaged. (FROM THE LETTER: A question for the person who keeps referring to President Trump as “Donny Bone Spurs”: Tell us, please, about your military service. Did you even serve? Tell us about Barack Obama’s. Tell us about Bill Clinton’s. Like millions of young men during the Vietnam War, President Trump sought and obtained legitimate deferments. I myself had several before I was finally drafted. Some of us even fled to Canada. You liberals applauded those guys, but now you criticize the president. I’m appalled that the News-Sun publishes your idiotic epithet for our president. They certainly would never have printed such a phony, derogatory comment about President Obama.)
