For many years, the Mussmans and the Diersens got together once a month on a Saturday evening alternating between their homes. In the early 1950s, Ralph Mussman (https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2008-03-06-0803051510-story.html)  saved me from drowning when I fell off a pier at a lake in Wisconsin.   He  took me on my first plane ride; his daughter Sandy and I sat in the back seat of a rented Piper Cub. During the 1970s, his getting a major contract to supply McDonald’s with eggs for its new Egg McMuffin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMuffin) helped him to dramatically expand his egg business. I hunted pheasants on his farm a number of times. During the 1960s, my father worked for him part-time for a while delivering eggs to homes in Park Forest.  During the 1970s, a friend of mine who worked for the Secret Service rented a small plane in northwest Indiana and we landed on the air strip on this farm and visited with Ralph. Ralph owned a 1964 Oldsmobile Starfire that helped spark my interest in cars.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m. at Mussman’s Back Acres at 9998 N 16000E Road in Grant Park, Ill. and the fire was raised to a fifth alarm before it was struck out, fire officials said. Chopper 7HD flew overhead as firefighters poured water onto the farm. The Grant Park Fire Department said five buildings at the plant were damaged, with two receiving heavy fire damage and the other three damaged by heavy smoke. The company said two of the two barns are a total loss. A spokesperson for the farm, Brian Birch, said the quick actions of the Grant Park Fire Department help to save at least 250,000 to 300,000 hens. No people were hurt. Michigan-based Konos purchased the farm in 2015. Mussman’s serves several Chicagoland retailers. Despite the fire, Birch says Konos will be able to fulfill all of its contracts. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters from a number of south suburban departments responded, including from Orland Park, Palos and Frankfort. Mussman’s Back Acres’ website says it is a family-owned farm and they also grow their own feed. The company said there should be no supply interruption.)

He was the guest of the Wheaton College Republicans. Bomberger’s talk touched on the “hypocrisy” of the BLM leadership in announcing its solidarity with Planned Parenthood, the “leading killer of black lives.” In response to Bomberger’s interactive talk, Lauren Rowley, Wheaton’s student body president, Tyler Waaler, the student body vice-president, and Sammy Shields, the “EVP” of the college’s Community Diversity, signed an email directed to the entire college claiming that Bomberger’s talk distressed “many” people of color. “As many of you know, a special interest club hosted an event on Wednesday night titled, ‘Black Lives Matter: In and Outside the Womb.’ The speaker of this event, Ryan Bomberger, made several comments at the event that deeply troubled members of our community. His comments, surrounding the topic of race, made many students, staff, and faculty of color feel unheard, underrepresented, and unsafe on our campus,” they wrote. Without supplying any examples, Rowley, Waaler, and Shields called Bomberger’s opinions “offensive rhetoric” and suggested that they “compromised” the college’s mission. “As Student Government, we are committed to the College’s mission to promoting student programming that ‘pursues unity, embraces ethnic diversity, and practices racial reconciliation so that it will contribute to the education of whole persons,’ and therefore, felt it necessary to respond to the offensive rhetoric from the speaker at this event that compromised this mission,” they stated. Bomberger, who is a biracial African American conceived in rape and then raised in a mixed-race family, responded indignantly to the allegations, saying that Rowley, Waaler, and Shields had demonized him. He said also that many students had told him that out of the three, only Shields had attended his talk. “I would think it would be against the college’s mission to intentionally mislead students,” Bomberger wrote in response to the student leaders’ backlash against him. Facing protests from civil rights leaders, lawmakers from both parties and members of his Cabinet, Mr. Bush this morning moved to end the uproar caused when the White House Counsel, C. Boyden Gray, circulated a draft of a directive Wednesday night that would have ended the use of racial preferences and quotas in Federal Government hiring. That draft gave rise to reports that the President would order all Federal agencies today to phase out the use of racial preferences and quotas in hiring to underscore his opposition to affirmative action. Some political opponents and those who have voiced doubt about his commitment to civil rights suggested that Mr. Bush was trying to undo by executive action what he could not achieve in his fight with Congress over the wording in the Civil Rights Act. Disputes Flare Anew Moving quickly to try to dispel that impression, Mr. Bush this morning had his press secretary, Marlin Fitzwater, say that Mr. Gray had acted without his knowledge, and the White House called civil rights leaders who had been invited to the signing ceremony to assure them that the affirmative action regulations dating from 1965 were not being wiped out. Still, some of his critics raised doubts about whether Mr. Bush really intended to abandon Mr. Gray’s effort. And late in the day, controversy erupted again over another aspect of the formal signing statement that was made public after Mr. Bush signed the bill at a ceremony in the Rose Garden. Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike criticized a passage in the statement in which Mr. Bush endorsed a hotly debated interpretation of certain provisions of the new anti-discrimination law that gives employers the broadest discretion in citing “business necessity” to defend policies that exclude blacks, women and other minority groups from hiring. In his speech, which amounted to a highly unusual repudiation of a close aide and followed a chaotic overnight review of the proposed changes in Federal hiring practices, the President cast aside Mr. Gray’s language on affirmative action.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: When James “Pate” Philip left as DuPage party chair in 2003 he left it with half a million dollars. Without their long time leader the DuPage GOP quickly fragmented into the nine individual township organizations who learned to fend for themselves. The money quickly dwindled and was never replenished. Neither were these organizations created equal in their ability or resources to fend for themselves. The lasting coup of the 2010 redistricting map is that it took those districts that followed GOP organizational lines and smashed them up. Local Republican organizations long used to having one representative and one senator now suddenly had five or six in some cases. To be required to focus on too much is to focus on nothing at all. This has undone local efforts to bolster candidates. Tea Parties admirably tried to pick up some of this slack as have larger more well-heeled groups like that of Dan Proft. Tactical victories partially explain the decline, but not the broader trends. While the township organizations helped slow the decline they were not the essential force in DuPage’s rise to preeminence. How then was the county so effective at its peak? Was it all just demographics as some would argue, or purely leadership? Surely both played a role, however one feature absent over the decline of the DuPage party was its massive and systematic outreach during its peak. The county GOP sent a quarterly newsletter to each and every voter. A substantial portion of what was raised every year and at massive events (like the one where Nancy Louise met Pate) went to their distribution. These efforts helped to educate all voters and especially newer ones to see why conservative governance was essential first at the local level, then at the state level. Before they knew it, they had become reliable Republican voters!)
