CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Is metro Chicago gaining or losing jobs? Yes. – GREG HINZ (DIERSEN: From what I see, the more of the following that you are, the less likely that Chicago employers will hire you, retain you, or promote you: Trump supporter, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owner, German American, draft avoider, and/or if your ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180730/BLOGS02/180739979
— Why CPS students of color still lose – GREG HINZ (DIERSEN: What high school did you graduate from? Since 1966, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I had an unfair advantage in life because I graduated from Crete-Monee High School in 1966. One could ask my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes what percent of my classmates a) earned a bachelor’s degree, b) earned a master’s degree, c) earned a professional certification, and d) earned a professional license.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180727/ISSUE05/180729916
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Metropolitan Planning Council ruffled some fur recently when it concluded in a report on census data that African-Americans are only partially sharing in downtown Chicago’s job boom. The council is right. Though one can argue that the glass is half full rather than half empty, fact is that in a time when overall downtown jobs grew 10 percent, the number held by blacks was up 2 percent. That’s certainly better than the 7.5 percent drop in Chicago’s black population in the same period, but not good enough. One obvious solution to that is better education. If young adults who now are trapped in declining neighborhoods get the right schooling and can tap into the right networks, they ought to be able to get more of these jobs. This is what was discouraging about another report that landed in my inbox a few days ago, concluding that Chicago public schools that are heavily black and Latino aren’t offering the same rich selection of college-prep courses as schools with more white students.)

HERALD & REVIEW
— Lake Shore-to-Wrigley anti-violence protest Thursday will cross Cubs game, Lollapalooza – JOHN BYRNE (DIERSEN: Who does not want your backing? Those who do not want my backing a) reject those like me who support the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, illegal drugs, equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving), and the rest of the planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform and the Republican Party platform, b) reject those like me who oppose the promotion of dependency on government, dependency on charity, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, abolition of the First and Second Amendments, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation, c) reject those like me who they cannot manipulate/dominate, and d) reject those like me who do not glorify and praise them, who do not pander to them, who do not serve as their operatives or dupes, and who do not give them money.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Organizers planning an anti-violence march that could snarl traffic along its route from Lake Shore Drive to Wrigleyville during Thursday’s evening rush hour — before a Cubs game and on the first day of Lollapalooza — went to City Hall Monday and made it clear they don’t want Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s backing for their demonstration.)

https://foxillinois.com/news/local/illinois-democrats-call-for-reauthorization-of-violence-against-women-act

Madigan, chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois, pointed the finger at President Trump. “With Donald Trump in the White House, women are constantly targeted as part of his agenda. — As jobs market improves, more people quitting – Cole Lauterbach (DIERSEN: With only rare exceptions, the longer that you work for government, the more impossible it is to get a job in the private sector. Private sector employers have an extremely low opinion of government employees. Private sector employers view government employees as being lazy, stupid, grossly overpaid, and even worse things. The longer that you work for government, the lower the opinion that private sector employers have of you. I was a government employee for almost 30 years. ASSOCIATED PRESS
— On retirement question, Justice Ginsburg has go-to answers (DIERSEN: I would have first been eligible for regular retirement in 2003 when I would have been 55 years old.)
https://apnews.com/eccb7230dc9245f79cda9cafed4ee080/On-retirement-question,-Justice-Ginsburg-has-go-to-answers
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For more than a decade, audiences and interviewers have had one pressing question for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: When will you retire? The question used to be whether the now 85-year-old liberal justice would let President Barack Obama choose her successor. Now it’s whether President Donald Trump might, giving conservatives an even stronger hold on the court. Ginsburg, the court’s oldest current member, has used a variety of practiced answers to the retirement question over the years. They all boil down to the same thing: She isn’t ready to go. On Sunday, Ginsburg reminded a New York audience that her former colleague Justice John Paul Stevens was 90 when he retired in 2010. “My senior colleague, Justice John Paul Stevens, he stepped down when he was 90, so think I have about at least five more years,” Ginsburg said, according to a CNN report.)

WASHINGTON POST
— White, and in the minority She speaks English. Her co-workers don’t. Inside a rural chicken plant, whites struggle to fit in. – Terrence McCoy (DIERSEN: How fast is your precinct, your municipality, your township/ward, and your county becoming anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time?)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/local/wp/2018/07/30/feature/majority-minority-white-workers-at-this-pennsylvania-chicken-plant-now-struggle-to-fit-in/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a country where whites will lose majority status in about a quarter-century, and where research suggests that demographic anxiety is contributing to many of the social fissures polarizing the United States, from immigration policy to welfare reform to the election of President Trump, the story of the coming decades will be, to some degree, the story of how white people adapt to a changing country. It will be the story of people like Heaven Engle and Venson Heim, both of whom were beginning careers on the bottom rung of an industry remade by Latinos, whose population growth is fueling that of America, and were now, in unusually intense circumstances, coming to understand what it means to be outnumbered. They didn’t know the heavy burden of discrimination familiar to members of historically oppressed minority groups, including biased policing and unequal access to jobs and housing. But some of the everyday experiences that have long challenged millions of black, Latino and immigrant Americans — the struggle to understand and be understood, feeling unseen, fear of rapid judgments — were beginning to challenge them, too.)

— Constraining the Political Beliefs of Federal Government Employees (DIERSEN: Did any of your employers punish you for your political beliefs? My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)
https://thevaughnlawfirm.com/constraining-the-political-beliefs-of-federal-government-employees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If a federal government employee is fired and/or discriminated against because of their political beliefs, the action would arguably be in contradiction to the United States Constitution, particularly due to the fact that it would potentially violate free speech rights as well as the right to due process. Discrimination that is based on an employee’s political beliefs occurs when an employer makes job decisions regarding that employee because of their political beliefs, civic activities, or party affiliation. For instance, if an employer demotes anyone who refuses to vote for a certain political party or does not hire someone as a result of their stance on a particular issue, then that employer is likely engaged in political discrimination. While there are no specific laws that prohibit discrimination based on political views, federal government employees have constitutional protections that prohibit the abuse of government power. The First Amendment guarantees the right to free speech, and thus, it can protect an employee’s political views, but it is important to note that this protection is for government employees rather than those that work for private employers. Even if there is not a valid reason to raise a free speech argument, it is possible that political discrimination may be illegal on other grounds. For example, depending on the facts and circumstances of your case, the political discrimination might be considered illegal religious or race-based discrimination. An experienced and knowledgeable Federal Employment Law Attorney can review your case and determine whether you have a viable discrimination claim.)

NBC NEWS
— GOP volunteers hit streets to save House from ‘Blue Wave’ “You didn’t even see Republican signs because it was assumed that everyone was voting Republican,” a resident of Wheaton, Illinois, said. – Shaquille Brewster (DIERSEN: Includes 3-minute video.)
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/gop-volunteers-hit-streets-save-house-blue-wave-n895546
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Glen Ellyn, Ill. — Thousands of Republican volunteers were deployed this weekend in a “Super Saturday” push to protect their House majority — knocking on doors, handing out flyers, and calling voters. The Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), a super PAC backed by House Speaker Paul Ryan, has been aggressive on television airwaves, but Saturday showcased their national field operation, making around 400,000 contacts with voters. . .NBC News followed a field team in Glen Ellyn, west of Chicago, Saturday afternoon. “We’re targeting local issues in local communities, it’s different in each congressional district,” Alexander said when asked about the message to voters. “Here in Illinois we’re talking about the Great Lakes, whereas in Washington we’re talking about Salmon hatcheries, and in Florida we’re talking about the Everglades.” CLF’s push is a sign of how seriously outside groups on both sides are taking the 2018 midterm battle. Volunteers in Illinois wore shirts with the words “Call. Knock. Win. Repeat!” on the back on Saturday. Buoyed by an energized democratic base, Democrats believe they are well positioned to flip the 23 legislative seats they need in order to snatch back control of the House. One of their top targets is Illinois sixth congressional district, home to Republican Rep. Peter Roskam. Roskam has been reelected by near 20-point margins in the past, but represents a suburban Chicago district that Hillary Clinton won by seven points. It’s a top target for national and state Democrats and CFL knows this, building a field office in a low-profile office building deep in the district. The room mirrors a typical campaign office, filled with GOP-themed posters, flyers advocating for the congressman, and a whiteboard listing weekly contact goals. Their aim: to keep Roskam’s Democratic challenger Sean Casten at a distance. “GDP! Good grief, it’s just amazing,” Susan Dahlstedt said to a group of CLF volunteers that knocked on her door in Wheaton, Illinois, referring to gross domestic product and strong economic numbers overall. The strong Trump supporter who suggested to the young group “he can keep his mouth shut sometimes” said she fears a democratic majority voting to impeach the president. “We’ve got to keep the house, it’s really essential,” Dahlstedt said soberly, promising to vote in November. A few blocks over, Michael Vassola saw the same volunteers walk past his house. It’s a Republican effort he says he’s never seen before in his neighborhood. “This is very much a staunchly Republican place,” he said. “You didn’t even see Republican signs because it was assumed that everyone was voting Republican.” But Vassola added: “I’ve lived in this neighborhood for a while and I’m seeing more and more Sean Casten signs — including in the one in front of my house.”)

A Republican Foreign Relations Committee aide speaking on the condition of anonymity offered a more upbeat assessment. “We were happy to work with our Democratic counterparts in resolving questions about hiring at MCC as we do regularly in exercising the committee’s oversight function,” the aide said. “Such oversight is important for all agencies under the committee’s jurisdiction, and we will continue working in a bipartisan manner moving forward.”)

Further, I went on vacations with a coworker to Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas, and Jamaica while I worked for IRS 1973-1976. Needless-to-say, my envy-filled IRS and GAO Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were beyond furious. U.S. SENATOR MARK WARNER (D, VA)
— On Senate Floor, Sen. Warner Speaks Out For the Federal Workforce (DIERSEN: Aside from me, how many retired federal employees do you know?)
https://www.warner.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2018/7/on-senate-floor-sen-warner-speaks-out-for-the-federal-workforce
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Today, U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA), Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate in support of the federal workforce, which has been subjected to unprecedented attacks under the Trump Administration. “The way our federal government treats its workforce, the way we manage and invest in the human capital of our federal government is not some kind of parochial issue. This is an issue that impacts all American who pay their taxes, follow the laws, and expect their federal government to work for them, and to work well,” Sen. Warner said on the Senate floor. “That’s why, Mr. President, I also rise with great concern about the recent efforts by this Administration to scapegoat and undermine the work of our public servants. It started with the hiring freezes that threw a wrench into the day-to-day operations of nearly every federal agency — with no apparent benefit to the taxpayers. It continued with executive orders undermining workplace protections for federal workers and their ability to organize as part of a union. And it culminated last month, with the Trump Administration’s plan to freeze federal employee pay and cut retirement benefits for 2.6 million federal retirees and survivors. This is the thanks our federal employees get for their service!” On May 4, OPM Director Jeff Pon outlined an Administration plan to freeze federal employee pay and cut retirement benefits for 2.6 million federal retirees and survivors. On May 25, President Trump signed three Executive Orders that would roll back protections for our federal workforce by making it easier to fire federal employees, restricting time employees can be compensated for union work and directing agencies to negotiate tougher union contracts. Today is the first day of oral arguments in a lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, challenging the executive orders.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Illinois Tollway boss Liz Gorman alleges threats from board member Joseph Gomez – Mary Wisniewski
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-biz-tollway-board-threats-20180726-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The usually sedate Illinois Tollway board’s monthly meeting erupted in controversy on Thursday, when the agency’s executive director accused a board member of threatening her. Board member Joseph Gomez, an appointee of Gov. Bruce Rauner and the senior vice president of Byline Bank, told the board that Tollway Executive Director Liz Gorman had refused to meet with him one-on-one before the meeting. Gorman told the board that she refused the meeting because of threats Gomez had made against her. “I feel uncomfortable and very threatened,” Gorman said. She said she had been willing to meet with Gomez with someone else present, but Gomez declined. The dispute between Gomez and Gorman comes at a time of increased scrutiny of Tollway operations. On Tuesday, members of the state Senate Transportation Committee questioned Tollway officials about contracts awarded to firms with political connections or ties to the agency. After Thursday’s meeting, Gorman told reporters the threats were “verbal” but declined to elaborate further, telling reporters they could request information under the Freedom of Information Act. Gomez denied Gorman’s charge and said he had not spoken to Gorman before Thursday morning. A former Republican Cook County commissioner, Gorman was named executive director in February. “I don’t know what she’s talking about,” Gomez told reporters after the meeting, noting that he had voted to approve her appointment.)

My ancestors have lived in northeast Illinois since the 1844. I lived in Crete 1948-1972, University Park 1972-1976, Chicago 1976-1978, and Wheaton since 1978. My wife and I have spent a lot of money on our home at 915 Cove Court. My brother continues to live in Crete in a home that my grandfather had built in 1926 on land that his grandfather bought in 1864. I earned my bachelor’s degree, three master’s degrees, six professional certifications, and a professional license (CPA) in Illinois. All of the jobs I held were in Illinois (Chicago Heights, Flossmoor, Park Forest, Belvidere, DeKalb, Harvey, Joliet, and Chicago). My wife’s brother lives in Naperville and her sister who has serious health problems lives in Wheaton. I have P.O.A. for health and property for my father’s sister who lives in an assisted living facility in Flossmoor. My mother’s sister lives in a nursing home in Beecher. Worse, he’s using the Southern Poverty Law Center’s so-called “hate list” to fuel this baseless attack. . .You and I both know that the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is just a vehicle for the radical Left to bully conservatives into submission and suppress free speech. If they see you as an enemy of the Leftist agenda, they label you a hate group no matter what you actually stand for. And now, a member of Congress is acting as their middle man and demanding the largest digital outlet for book sales censor us. SUPER CHEVY
— MARCH 9, 2018 FLASHBACK: Reading Your Corvette After a Long Storage – James Berry (DIERSEN: After not starting it since 2009, my 1972 Chevy Corvette, with only 5,081 miles on it, is at D & M Corvette in Downers Grove. My excuse for not starting the car and not driving it each summer is my spending 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out. In addition, since 2005, I have had a 2005 Corvette to drive; since 2012, a 2013 Dodge Charger R/T Max to drive; and since 2016, a 2016 Ford Mustang to drive. The carburetor is being rebuilt today. So far, D & M has replaced the car’s 5 tires with correct Firestone Wide Oval White Letter replica tires from Coker Tire, replaced all four calipers, replaced the master brake cylinder and fuel pump, fixed a fuel leak, fixed a passenger door latch problem, installed a new battery, changed the oil and filter, etc. D & M has not yet checked A/C and or taken it on a test drive. After investing all this money in the car, I am increasing its stated value insurance from $30,000 to $35,000. From now on, I will start and drive the car at least once each summer. The car is a Steel Cities Gray Coupe with the base 350 engine, automatic, power steering, A/C, black leather seats, AM/FM stereo radio, and heavy duty battery. The VIN is 1Z37K2S503860. I ordered the car in August of 1971 after my 1969 Dodge Charger SE was stolen in Chicago. I paid for the car with the $2,500 insurance settlement, $500 from my savings, and a $3,000 from a car loan. I took delivery on October 14, 1971. I paid the car loan off with money that I earned working for IRS full-time and working for Firestone Stores part-time. I stored the car in my mother’s garage in Crete 1971-1984 and in my attached, insulated, and heated garage in Wheaton since then, and since 1995, on a hydraulic lift. Money Magazine’s February 1978 “one person’s finances” article on me mentioned the car and included a picture of the car with me in it.)

Because GAO was not unionized, my Democrat GAO superiors were able to force me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, to give me unfair performance expectations and appraisals (especially in 1989), to always rank me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, to not promote me beyond GS-13, to get rid of my mentor in 1987, to keep me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and to force me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/unions-seek-end-trump-executive-orders-on-federal-employee-work-rules/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On May 25, Trump signed the orders that included provisions that make it easier to fire federal employees; prohibit an employee’s ability to file a grievance over a poor performance rating; lessen the time union representatives will be able to act on a member’s behalf during work hours, and set time limits for labor negotiations. In addition, performance would become a more important factor than seniority when it comes to layoffs. . .Bob Reiter, head of the Chicago Federation of Labor, said the orders — especially limiting the interactions of union members during work hours — show the hypocrisy of the president. “You can’t say you’re for the American worker, it’s a complete joke. To use President Trump’s words: Sad,” Reiter said Wednesday at a news conference held at the CFL’s downtown office. National Treasury Employees Union attorney Michael J. McAuley said what many people may not know about the federal unions is that no one is forced to join and that federal unions don’t bargain over pay, retirement or health insurance benefits, which are all decided by Congress. Federal unions handle mostly working conditions and due process related issues. What the executive orders are really about, according to McAuley: “They want to take the unions and decrease their powers significantly so our membership is intimidated and afraid and finds us irrelevant so that when it comes time to go to the polls … we don’t have the ability to deliver our membership’s votes,” he said.)

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/07/brauner-most-conspicuous-of-governors-struggling-in-2018.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The man in most dire straits at present is Illinois Republican governor Bruce Rauner, whose second-quarter approval ratio is 27/60 — third-worst in the country, behind term-limited Republican Mary Fallin of Oklahoma and retiring Democrat Dan Malloy of Connecticut. Rauner’s popularity has not improved a whit since his very narrow March primary win over little-known conservative legislator Jeanne Ives. And his fabulous wealth won’t save him against his even more fabulously wealthy Democratic opponent, J.B. Pritzker (who outspent the incumbent by a $20.1 million to $7.8 million margin in the second quarter). Aside from his poor numbers (in both approval ratings and horse-race polls), Rauner must also deal with a minor-party conservative candidate sure to deny him some votes, particularly given his rare-for-a-Republican pro-choice stance.)

They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/ct-rich-people-prefer-grey-poupon-white-people-own-pets-cultural-divide-20180724-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The cultural divide is real, and it’s huge. Americans live such different lives that what we buy, do or watch can be used to predict our politics, race, income, education and gender – sometimes with more than 90 percent accuracy. It turns out that people are separated not just by gun ownership, religion and their beliefs on affirmative action – but also by English muffins, flashlights and mustard. To prove it, University of Chicago economists Marianne Bertrand and Emir Kamenica taught machines to guess a person’s income, political ideology, race, education and gender based on either their media habits, their consumer behavior, their social and political beliefs, and even how they spent their time. Their results were released in a new working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research. The duo trained their algorithms to detect patterns in decades of responses to three long-running surveys, each with between 669 and 22,093 responses per year. The surveys were tuned and filtered to be consistent over time, which allowed Bertrand and Kamenica to measure how America’s cultural divides have evolved. . .But others are revelatory: White people and black people are almost as different in their spending habits as rich people and poor people are, for example. Differences in social attitudes between liberals and conservatives have been widened over time, Bertrand and Kamenica found. The gap in social attitudes between whites and nonwhites has fallen slightly, but the difference in consumer behavior between races has grown.)

(FROM THE MEDIA ADVISORY: On Wednesday evening, the Cook County Republican Central Committee is scheduled to vote on a proposal by Chairman Sean Morrison to admit Democrats into leadership positions in several Republican ward organizations. The proposal would eliminate the provision in the bylaws that say that individuals may not have voted Democrat in the last three cycles to hold the office of Republican ward committeeman. In 2016, several life-long Democrats, some affiliated with the local Alderman, ran for office as Republican ward committeemen and were disqualified by the bylaws. Chairman Morrison has stated that he intends to seat them anyway. The controversial proposal is strongly opposed by a large number of Chicago Republican committeemen who have said they intend to boycott the meeting. The proposal has also drawn strong opposition from the chairman of the Chicago GOP, Chris Cleveland. Cleveland’s statement on the matter is below. The meeting will be held at: Gene & Georgetti’s Restaurant in Rosemont Wednesday, July 25 7:30 pm The meeting is open to the public.)

I worked for IRS 1971-1980 and for GAO 1980-1997. I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lawmakers are demanding the first study in nearly a decade on pay for congressional staffers amid growing concerns about whether those workers, in particular women and racial minorities, are being underpaid. “Addressing pay inequality, both on sex and race, is a top priority,” said Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee. “That’s why we’ve included language in this year’s Legislative Branch appropriations bill for a compensation study that examines both pay equity and the overall competitiveness of House salaries.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: To finance their purchases, one in three millennial homeowners withdrew money from or took loans against their retirement accounts, according to Bank of the West’s survey of over 600 U.S. adults ages 21-34. Meanwhile, one in five millennials who are planning to buy a home expect to do the same. It’s an “alarming” trend, according to Ryan Bailey, head of Bank of the West’s retail banking group. “Millennials are so eager to become homeowners that some may be inadvertently cutting off their nose to spite their face.” He recommends relying on savings rather than dipping into your retirement funds. “Borrowing from your retirement may make sense in special circumstances, but it’s definitely not a recommendation we tell people to do,” Bailey tells CNBC.)

Some Republicans and their allies had been questioning Rauner’s intention to fund campaign operations for the fall while he focuses on his own re-election bid. Republicans have come to count on cash from the wealthy governor, an equity investor, and he has largely subsidized the state GOP. — ‘THE NEW GILDED AGE’ ILLINOIS INCOME INEQUALITY TOPS NATIONAL AVERAGE – Ted Cox (DIERSEN: From what I see, there is an above average disparity in income and in housing values in my precinct.)
https://www.oneillinois.com/stories/2018/7/23/the-new-gilded-age
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois was one of eight states to top that disparity, but it was closest to the national average. In Illinois, the average income for the top 1 percent was $1.4 million, 27 times greater than the average salary for the other 99 percent: $52,000. It took income of $421,000 to make the top 1 percent nationally, $456,000 in Illinois. Lake County was among the top counties in the nation for what it takes to make the top 1 percent of residents, with a threshold of $994,000, 18th in the United States. The average income for the top 1 percent there was $3.1 million, 37.4 times greater than the average salary for the other 99 percent of $83,000. Even among the very rich, Illinois held its own. The study found that, of all income going to the top 1 percent nationally, half that figure was accrued by families in five states: California, New York, Texas, Florida, and Illinois. Frank Manzo IV, of the Illinois Economic Policy Institute, which is not affiliated with the national organization, said the data match his for Illinois. According to Manzo, 57,421 Illinois tax filers topped $500,000 in income in 2015, slightly more than 1 percent of the 5,667,344 total. With an average income of $1.56 million, they claimed 21.7 percent of all adjusted gross income statewide.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Why we published an all-woman Tech 50 list – Editorial (DIERSEN: When will Crain’s publish all-woman and all-minority federal government 50 lists? Since the 1960s, the federal government’s top priority has been a) to hire, retain, and promote young Democrat women and young Democrat minorities and b) to make way for them by wasting the careers of and by getting rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who did not make GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180720/ISSUE07/180719833
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Our 2011 Small Business Week coverage featured the Tech 25, a list of the people propelling the growth of technology entrepreneurship in Chicago. Howard Tullman was there, as CEO of his Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, since this was before he would go on to help create the 1871 Chicago startup hub. So were Sam Yagan, then co-founder of OKCupid, as well as Obama for America veteran Harper Reed and Lightbank partner Paul Lee, to name a few. We’ve since expanded the feature to an annual list of the 50 tech people you need to know now, and we’ve embraced founders of large companies as well as small ones while sprinkling in more financiers, heavyweights, connectors, dreamers, gurus and coders. Over the years, Crain’s technology reporter John Pletz, thanks to his deep and wide knowledge of the sector, has done an incredible job of producing each year’s list, keeping it fresh with new, diverse names while burnishing readers’ understanding of the perennial power players who have remained relevant year in, year out. This year, however, the editors threw John a curveball. With our ongoing Woman Up Project in mind, we asked him to create an all-female Tech 50 for 2018.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— This one is a doozy, even by Chicago standards: Millionaire Chicago mayoral candidate Willie Wilson handed out $300,000 in cash to attendees at a South Side church Sunday. And it gets better: According to Wilson, $100,000 of it came from Gov. Bruce Rauner. – Shia Kapos

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Check this out if you wonder why Illinois politicians are often a national joke. How can Willie Wilson, a candidate for Mayor of Chicago, literally hand out CASH at a public event? This is so wrong!” tweeted, Republican state Rep. David McSweeney.)
— Seating squabble: Thursday’s Lincoln Forum debate between Republican Rep. Peter Roskam and Democratic challenger Sean Casten is sold out. The event was only supposed to have 100 audience guests, ideally supporters evenly split between the two candidates. But when tickets went on sale, Casten’s supporters gobbled them up. Lincoln Forum co-founders Pat Brady, the former state GOP chairman, and Eric Adelstein, a Dem strategist, decided out of fairness to sell an additional 70 tickets to Roskam supporters. “The Lincoln Forum is nonpartisan and we have a duty to have a balanced room,” Brady said. – Shia Kapos (DIERSEN: I should write a book about the two times that Pat Brady spoke at TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois meetings.)

UNION LEADER
— Unions support workers – RICHARD BACKUS, New Boston (DIERSEN: IRS’s and GAO’s 40-hour work week and annual leave policies helped me to a) earn an MBA from Loyola in 1976, b) pass the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, c) earn a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, d) pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, and e) earn a master’s degree in financial markets and trading in 1997.)
http://www.unionleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20180718/OPINION04/180719439
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Right-to-work is not what it seems. Before labor unions, factory workers toiled six days a week, 12 hours a day. They often worked alongside children as young as 5 years old. Pay was terrible; there were no health benefits or pensions. It was the unions that gave us the 5-day, 40-hour work week, pensions, and other benefits. It was the unions that gave us the shared prosperity of the 1940s and ‘50s. Since then the unions have been under attack, to the point where we have the unconscionable situation of full-time workers at Walmart needing to go on welfare. Gov. Chris Sununu is a champion of “right-to-work” legislation. And now, in Janus vs. AFCSME, the Supreme Court (with Neil Gorsuch on the bench) has said it’s okay for employees not to contribute union dues. The phrase “right-to-work” sounds innocent enough, but make no mistake, it intends to weaken unions and increase corporate profits. We now have the most unequal society since the Gilded Age of the 1890s. And Republicans, the party of the 1 percent, as the recent tax bill demonstrated, have already signaled they are coming after Medicare and Social Security. If you care about fairness, equity, and a society that works for everyone, vote accordingly in November.)
