(FROM THE ARTICLE: Look who’s back. Dick Uihlein, the Republican megadonor known for putting his money behind far-right candidates, just gave $5,000 to state Rep. John Cabello (R-Machesney Park), who earlier this month filed a temporary restraining order against Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order, saying it was hurting small business owners. The governor has maintained it’s a matter of safety to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Uihlein and his wife, Liz, are taking a stand against the stay-at-home orders. Last month, Liz Uihlein sent a memo to employees at Uline, the couple’s shipping-supply company, urging them to support a petition calling for the recall of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers for violating their constitutional right to work during the coronavirus pandemic. The Uihleins have a history of supporting deeply conservative issues: pro-gun, anti-transgender rights, and pro-Roy Moore (the former Alabama U.S. Senate candidate accused of sexual misconduct with young girls). They were big donors in high-profile races in 2018 only to see their candidates lose, POLITICO’s Natasha Korecki wrote at the time. The Uihleins have since pulled back on — but not ended — their political giving. Along with donating to Cabello, their Americas PAC pumped more than $800,000 into funding two Senate races: Republican John James in Michigan and Sen. Joni Ernst in Iowa.)

— TRAGIC, DISGUSTING: Who is more likely to smoke marijuana? – Daniella Genovese
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/more-likely-smoke-marijuana-194842942.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to a July 2019 poll from Gallup, which surveyed 1,525 adults across the nation who were at least 18 years old, the likelihood of someone smoking marijuana “varies significantly” by gender, age, region and political ideology. Overall, the survey indicated that adults between 18 to 29 years old are the age group most likely to smoke marijuana. According to the findings, 22 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds revealed they smoked, which makes them twice as likely to smoke compared to adults from 30-49 years old and seven times as likely as adults older than 65 years old. Eleven percent of adults from 30-49 years admitted to smoking and 12 percent of people ages 50 to 64 do. Meanwhile, only three percent of people over the age of 65 admitted to smoking. . .Aside from age, the results also revealed that men are twice as likely to smoke marijuana than women. Additionally, liberals are six times more likely to smoke than conservatives and twice as likely as moderates, according to the findings.)

— Public service and the federal government – Fiona Hill (DIERSEN: Who looks down on you? From what I see, ever-increasingly, Republicans look down on federal employees and look down on federal retirees. I was a federal employee for almost 30 years and I have been a federal retiree for almost 23 years.)
https://www.brookings.edu/policy2020/votervital/public-service-and-the-federal-government/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Popular appreciation of and respect for government service and public servants have steadily declined in the United States since the 1960s, with only two brief exceptions: in the 1990s during the Clinton administration, and in the months immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. There is a particularly deep sense of distrust in the U.S. federal government. In an April 2019 Pew Research Center poll, for example, only 17% of respondents indicated that they trusted the federal government “to do the right thing.” Why is this the case? While there is significant support for the vital functions public servants perform at the local and state levels, and during crises, deeply entrenched misconceptions about the U.S. federal government and its individual agencies shape more negative views. For example, the opinion that the U.S. government is vast and unwieldly is widespread outside the public sector. The U.S. population has been evenly split for several years in its views on the optimal size of the U.S. government—with 47% of those polled by Pew in 2019 seeing government as either too big or too small. The two perspectives reveal a sharp partisan divide. Sixty-seven percent of those who affiliate with the Democratic Party express support for the expansion of government services. On the “too big” side of the ledger, 74% of those who describe themselves as Republicans want to see the government shrink in both size and functions. Newspaper and opinion page headlines such as “The sheer size of our government workforce is an alarming problem” encapsulate this view.)
— Destroying trust in the media, science, and government has left America vulnerable to disaster – Marc Hetherington and Jonathan M. Ladd (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who have focused on destroying trust in me and trust in my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. I would focus on those who have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in Wheaton’s West District, Wheaton, Milton Township, DuPage County, and Illinois. I would focus on those who paint themselves as being religious, conservative, and/or Republican to give themselves standing to destroy those who are religious, conservative, and/or Republican.)

BLOOMBERG
— Early Retirement Is Tempting Now. Don’t Do It. Why not let the pandemic accelerate a decision that was just over the horizon anyway? Here’s why. – Alexis Leondis (DIERSEN: I should write a book about early retirement.)
https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-05-20/coronavirus-economy-makes-early-retirement-a-bad-idea
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For most Americans, even wealthy ones, the answer is clear: Don’t do it. The financial benefits of continuing to work, even for one more year as the pandemic crushes the economy, outweigh the health risks for most people. A recent report from the New School’s Retirement Equity Lab shows how dire the situation is for older employees. About 3 million more of them will fall into lifelong poverty than otherwise would have without a coronavirus recession. And the hit won’t just be for the poorest. While only 15% of high earners are expected to lose their jobs, average retirement savings at age 65 for those with retirement assets are projected to drop by 31% post-recession. For those who still aren’t dissuaded, here are some other things to keep in mind. First, it’ll be harder than ever to change your mind. Many retired workers end up going back to work; one study showed that 40% of those working at 65 or after had been retired previously. Employers are now likely to be even more skeptical than usual about hiring older people, who expect higher earnings and are potentially the most vulnerable to the virus. That makes retiring now more of a permanent decision than it’s ever been. A better bet than quitting might be negotiating a part-time schedule, or continuing to work from home after colleagues have returned to the office. Alicia Munnell, director of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, said she thinks employers are likely to make accommodations for older workers who are valued. It’s important not to underestimate how much money will be needed to retire comfortably. Some people mistakenly think that their spending will be greatly reduced in retirement, which isn’t what usually happens, according to Diahann Lassus, a financial planner in New Jersey. Retirees end up filling their time with activities that come with expenses, she said.)

NATIONAL REVIEW
— The Return of Exclusivity – MICHAEL BRENDAN DOUGHERTY (DIERSEN: Since 2000 when I was 52 years old, my critics/opponents have been beyond furious that I have had the time and the money needed to put GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and to send them out free of charge and without any advertising or forced survey questions. I have that time and that money because my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. Why was I eligible to take early retirement? I had worked for the federal government for almost 30 years – almost 18 years working for GAO 1980-1997, almost 9 years working for IRS 1971-1980, and almost 3 years working for the Post Office 1966-1969. The last 11 years that I worked for GAO was at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $101,176-$131,532/year. My critics/opponents paint my Civil Service Retirement System pension and my federal health, dental, and vision insurance subsidy as being an “unfair advantage.” My critics/opponents would never stoop to take the federal jobs that I did. I should write a book about my critics/opponents who have not and would not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass an employment examination, e) because they cannot pass a background investigation, and/or f) because they cannot pass a physical examination.)

https://nypost.com/2020/05/23/coronavirus-is-boom-time-for-socialists-goodwin/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For socialists and those who lean that way, pandemic time is boom time. Washington is printing and spending money like never before and both parties support sending cash to businesses and the unemployed. Rent and mortgage payments are being deferred, Medicare-for-all is getting a second look and support is growing for a program that would take the nation across the economic Rubicon — a guaranteed basic income. Seldom is heard those cautionary words of yesteryear, “moral hazard.” A time of great need and fear is shattering any stigma about being on the dole. A logical conclusion is that politics will follow culture and Bernie Sanders- and AOC-types will call the shots in America. Unless Republicans and conservatives get on board, they will be consigned to history’s dustbin. Perhaps. But pay attention to another potential reaction to the pandemic. Think of it as the revenge of the nonessentials.)

— Businesses are reopening. If you’re older or sick, what happens to your job? – LAURENCE DARMIENTO (DIERSEN: From what I see, ever-increasingly, governments, businesses, and organizations will use coronavirus to get rid of their employees and members who are older, who are obese, and/or who have health problems. They will use budget cuts and “up-or-out” policies as pretexts to accomplish the aforesaid. https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2020-05-22/coronavirus-reopening-preexisting-conditions-seniors-older-workers
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With some 39 million Americans filing jobless claims since the pandemic broke out and fears growing of another Great Depression, getting workplaces open has become a priority. That’s a tricky proposition as the number of coronavirus cases and deaths mount, even if the rate of transmission slows in some places. But for workers especially vulnerable to complications from COVID-19, a return to work can feel like a death sentence. That’s not a small group. Some 41 million Americans ages 18 to 64 are at risk for serious complications from COVID-19 due to underlying conditions such as diabetes, uncontrolled asthma and heart disease, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis. Also at risk are Americans 65 and older, about 10.4 million of whom remain in the workforce — an age group that accounts for 80% of U.S. COVID deaths. . .While federal law provides special protections for workers who have disabilities or are older, ultimately they can be recalled to the workplace, even if it can’t be made 100% safe. And should employers try to prevent certain employees from returning to their jobs, they could face discrimination claims from older workers and disabled workers. . .Workers who are diabetic or asthmatic or have other conditions that are considered disabilities are offered special protections by the Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires employers to provide so-called “reasonable accommodations” as needed. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act offers workers older than 40 protections against discrimination on the basis of their age. Questions linger about whether and how such protections will shield workers who are older or have medical conditions in the time of the coronavirus. “It’s definitely a minefield for employers,” said Walter Stella, a labor and employment attorney at Cozen O’Connor, which represents employers. “The traditional reasonable accommodation analysis requires employers to accommodate disabled employees so that they can continue to perform the essential functions of their jobs. The focus of the law is not to give employees a reasonable accommodation so that they don’t get the coronavirus.” That legal analysis rubs up against the demands of employee advocates who say that providing a safe workplace is the fundamental duty of employers amid the pandemic.)
