CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Chicago Fire soccer team shuts down anti-gay chant – John Kass
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-chicago-fire-anti-gay-soccer-chant-kass-0804-20160803-column.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It was “Pride” night. The Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus had finished a fine rendition of the national anthem before Sunday’s game with the New York Red Bulls. That’s when Rodriguez walked into the center circle and did something the rest of the soccer world doesn’t seem able to do. He looked up into the stands and announced that any fan found to be using the infamous anti-gay Mexican soccer chant would be booted out of the stadium. “An inappropriate and offensive chant has been used by some of our fans,” Rodriguez said. “It is unbecoming and certainly not reflective of the great city that we live in, and the best fans in major league soccer. “Please be advised that if the chant continues and you are found to be participating, you are subject to removal. If you are near fans using offensive language, please advise stadium security so we can handle that as well.” And all I could say was “bravo.” There were a few boos. But most of us applauded him. And I didn’t hear that chant once during the game. If you know soccer, you know the chant I’m talking about, a chant of one word: Puto. It means effeminate man whore. It is ugly and demeaning, directed at gay men in a macho culture, but at soccer games it is directed at the goalie of the opposing team.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Inmate may have to register as sex offender for flashing guard – Frank Main  (DIERSEN: Of course, needless-to-say, if you disapprove of what “Savage Life” members do, Democrats and RINOs will viciously demonize, denigrate, and condemn you as being a racist, a sexist, a bigot, and even worse things.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/savage-life-inmate-to-register-as-sex-offender-for-flashing-guard/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For the first time, a Cook County Jail inmate may be required to register as a sex offender for repeatedly exposing himself to correctional officers, a sheriff’s official said Thursday. Giovanni Rios, who is awaiting trial in a 2015 murder in Humboldt Park, was held in contempt of court Thursday by Judge Vincent Gaughan for allegedly exposing himself to a female guard on Wednesday, said Cara Smith, policy chief for Sheriff Tom Dart. Rios, 20, a member of the Savage Life jail gang, is charged with the Wednesday incident and two similar ones in the jail, Smith said. If convicted of all three charges, he would be required to register as a sex offender, she said. “It is tremendous to see these cases taken seriously,” she said, adding she believes it’s the first time anyone may be ordered to register as a sex offender for committing acts of indecent exposure in the jail. Rios is one of about 35 inmates who have identified themselves as members of Savage Life, a gang formed last year among inmates being held in maximum-security units. Their activities include physically attacking guards, throwing feces and urine at them, and exposing themselves and masturbating in the presence of female defense attorneys and correctional officers, Smith said. Since July 2015, jail officials have recorded hundreds of such incidents involving Savage Life but the incidents have decreased in recent months. One of the ways the sheriff’s office is combatting the behavior is to take away “good time” inmates earn in jail, Smith said. The office also is limiting visits and aggressively prosecuting Savage Life inmates for public indecency and other crimes, she said. Smith said she hopes the possibility of Rios becoming a registered sex offender sends a message to other Savage Life inmates. Even hardened criminals balk at the stigma of being labeled sex offenders, she said. Savage Life members recently expanded their perverse activities. They have been opening their own wounds and sticking sharp objects into their eyes to force guards to send them to the jail hospital. Most Savage Life members are in the maximum-security Division 9 and relish the chance to “take a walk” to another part of the jail — even the hospital, Smith said.)

http://www.wjbc.com/2016/08/05/gop-insider-faces-backlash-for-slamming-trump/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Republican strategist said it’s not easy being a vocal critic of the party’s nominee for president. Former Illinois GOP chairman Pat Brady has been saying for months Donald Trump is unelectable. “One of the members of the national committee at the convention told me I need to quit being a Republican,” Brady said. “I didn’t know you could resign.” Brady is encouraging Republicans to focus on down-ticket races, including the hotly-contested U.S. Senate battle between Republican incumbent Mark Kirk and Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth. Brady told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin, Republicans who have been critical of Trump, including Kirk and U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, could get some blowback but are putting the country ahead of the party. Brady said Kinzinger’s recent announcement that he likely won’t vote for anyone in the presidential race won’t hurt his political future, even if some in the party try to run him out of office. “They can try, they are not going to beat him,” Brady said. “Adam is one of the best people we have in Congress he’s a smart guy. He’s a military guard. He’s a great public servant and I think people like and respect him.” Brady tells WJBC’s Scott Laughlin he wouldn’t be surprised if the Bloomington native runs for higher office in a few years.)

WTTW
— Black Lives Matter Coalition Releases 1st Official Platform – Reuben Unrau
http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2016/08/02/black-lives-matter-coalition-releases-1st-official-platform
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The demands are organized into six categories with titles such as “Invest-Divest,” “Economic Justice,” “Community Control” and “Political Power.” Within each category, the agenda includes a list of more than 40 specific federal, state and local policies that could be applied to create solutions. The conglomerate calls for a variety of far-reaching reforms that address issues that extend beyond the subject of police brutality. Policy proposals include a call for universal health care, decriminalization of drug-related offenses, federal and state jobs programs, community control of law enforcement and the end of the death penalty. Perhaps the most striking item featured in the agenda is the demand for reparations, which contains a five-part plan to address various economic sectors affected by the legacy of slavery.)

ILLINOIS FAMILY ACTION
— The Cannibalization of the GOP –  Laurie Higgins
https://illinoisfamilyaction.org/2016/08/the-cannibalization-of-the-gop/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At this cultural moment, the GOP is the only party that defends marriage, the intrinsic rights of children (both prenatal and post-natal children), religious liberty, and the physical privacy rights of girls and boys and men and women. But the barbarians have breached the gate and are cannibalizing the GOP while it yet lives. Well-dressed, well-spoken barbarians but barbarians nonetheless. What accounts for the corruption of the GOP? There are numerous reasons including the childish moral reasoning of lawmakers like U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) who supports homoerotic faux-marriage because his son experiences homoerotic attraction. The fact that Portman’s son experiences homoerotic attraction does not change the nature of marriage or the moral status of homoerotic activity. And it’s foolish to believe that compassion dictates we must affirm everything our loved ones believe, feel, or desire. Would the fact that people we love experience polyamorous or “Genetic Sexual Attraction” change the nature of marriage or the moral status of sex between five people or between siblings? But foolish, self-referential moral reasoning is not the only cause of the transmogrification of the party. Another cause is the increasing number of Republicans—including those who identify as homosexual—who say the “social issues” are trivial and irrelevant with no substantive effect on the health and welfare of America. Ironically, while libertarian-leaning, (im)moderate, and homosexual Republicans proclaim the triviality and irrelevance of “social issues” to the survival and flourishing of America, Democrats pursue them like men and women possessed. Could it be that Democrats are able to see truths to which Republicans are blind?)

DAILY SIGNAL
— How DePaul University Surrenders to the Mob – Nathan Howe and John-Michael Seibler (DIERSEN: How soon, if not already, will my critics/opponents succeed in getting DePaul to rescind my diploma?  What college(s) did you graduate from and in what year(s)?  I graduated from NIU in 1970, Loyola in 1976, DePaul in 1980, and IIT in 1997.  What do those at the college(s) that you graduated from think of you?  Sadly, from what I see, the majority of those a NIU, Loyola, DePaul, and ITT disapprove of me, despise me, if not hate me.  From what I see, under the Democrats and under the RINOs, those at colleges are increasingly anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://dailysignal.com/2016/08/04/how-depaul-university-surrenders-to-the-mob/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Perhaps DePaul was afraid of offending Black Lives Matter, and looking politically incorrect. The protesters, exercising a heckler’s veto, were able to shut down the event. Afterward, DePaul’s president, the Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, purported to apologize by email to the College Republicans. But Holtschneider made sure to include his opinion of Yiannopoulos and other speakers of his “ilk,” whom he referred to as “self-serving provocateurs” whose “shtick” is “unworthy of university discourse.” Meanwhile, DePaul is more than happy to host controversial liberal speakers and events, such as a fundraiser for Rasmea Odeh, a convicted terrorist. By banning Shapiro from speaking because of the threat of a protest, DePaul’s administration is siding with students who disagree with his viewpoint rather than standing up to potential violence on campus. DePaul also is teaching its students not to engage in the “open discourse” the university purports to foster. It is showing them that they can silence opposing views with threats of protests and violence. “After all,” writes Jim DeMint, president of The Heritage Foundation, “the easiest way to win an argument is to tape your opponent’s mouth shut. Too many educators today think this is a good idea.” As a private institution, DePaul is not held to the same First Amendment standards as public universities. Kelly Sarabyn, a former fellow at the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, argues that, nonetheless, the “longstanding purpose of the liberal arts and research universities is realized through free speech on campus, and students, faculty, and donors reasonably expect it to prevail.” Those groups may yet persuade universities to stand behind their commitments to free speech through advocacy and donations. If such efforts prove unsuccessful, perhaps courts could be persuaded, as Sarabyn argues they should be, to compel private schools to honor any express commitments to prospective students to honor free speech on campus—on the ground that students are enticed by and rely upon those commitments when choosing which schools to attend. Given the university president’s open animosity to speakers such as Yiannopoulos, the Shapiro incident raises the real possibility that DePaul administrators are all too happy to have an excuse to prevent students from being exposed to views that compete with their school’s own liberal ideology. Is it that DePaul administrators can’t keep their students safe and their speaking events secure? Or is it that they refuse to do so because citing “security concerns” to prevent conservative speakers from appearing on campus actually furthers their own ideological aims?)

— Stop calling Trump crazy – David M. Perry  (DIERSEN: Democrats are moral relativists who believe that their end justifies their means.  They are disciples of Saul Alinsky.  If you do not become a Democrat, sooner or later, they will hint/imply/argue/shout that you are mentally ill.)
http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/04/opinions/stop-calling-trump-crazy-perry/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: This week, Karen Bass, a Democratic congresswoman from California, launched a Change.org petition calling for Donald Trump to be diagnosed. She supported it by promoting the hashtag #DiagnoseTrump, and the topic took off. Her effort has received ample media coverage and trended nationally on Twitter for a while. And as it did, it became the latest manifestation of a problem I’ve been tracking for months now. With what seems to be increasing frequency, each time Trump does something objectionable, too many of his opponents want to blame mental illness as a way to erode his electoral chances. Yet characterizing Trump as “crazy” relies on the stigma of psychiatric disabilities to make a point. There are many grounds on which to criticize Donald Trump and to argue against his candidacy. But his mental health should not be one of them, because it’s a strategy that appeals to bigotry. Leveraging ableism to achieve electoral goals is no more acceptable than using racism, sexism, anti-gay sentiment, anti-Islamic sentiment, or any other form of prejudice. I don’t want Donald Trump to become president for lots of reasons. He routinely makes racist and sexist comments. He lies. I don’t trust him to make good decisions or to hire good people. The list of detriments goes on and on. Yet characterizing his erratic temperament or understanding of the truth as a product of mental illness, then arguing he’s unfit to lead because of that mental illness, sends a terrible message to the millions of people with diagnosed psychiatric disabilities who are trying to make their way through an ableist world. Don’t just take it from me. Many people with psychiatric disabilities and other diagnoses have been writing about this since Trump’s candidacy became serious, begging abled America to stop stigmatizing mental illness through armchair diagnoses of Donald Trump. Disability rights advocate Kit Mead, for example, recently wrote, “Discussing Trump’s mental health status is getting into the territory where people will use it to say that people with mental health needs can’t be effective candidates for public office if they choose to run.” Kim Sauder makes a similar argument, writing, “If the logic is that by framing Trump as having a mental illness makes him unfit for the presidency then the message is that mental illness is equated with incompetence.” Furthermore, Sauder writes, “Bigotry is not a mental illness.” Finn Gardiner notes that there are many ways to criticize someone with whom you disagree that do not rely on ableist concepts. “Call them wrong. Call them misguided. Call them terrible,” Gardiner writes, “But stop calling them crazy.” Emily Willingham made a similar point at Forbes, writing, “We can use specific terms about his personality (disagreeable) and temperament (toddler-ish) but not make attributions to a clinical disorder.” Avoiding pathologizing Donald Trump doesn’t mean surrendering a useful weapon in the quest to defeat him. Unfortunately, there’s a specific history of using disability as a weapon to attack political opponents at the highest levels in our society. In 1964, the cover of Fact Magazine read, “1,189 Psychiatrists Say Goldwater is Psychologically Unfit to be President!” The story called him paranoid, criticized him for his “infantile fantasies of revenge,” his relationship with his mother, a “dangerous lunatic,” and discussed alleged nervous breakdowns. Goldwater sued Fact and won. The American Psychiatrist Association, or APA, recognizing how dangerous it was to use mental health as a political weapon, issued the “Goldwater Rule,” forbidding psychiatrists from commenting on anyone’s mental state without personally examining them and receiving permission to go public. The APA was worried that people would conceal their mental health needs lest they be publicly shamed. And that’s just what happened in 1972, when Thomas Eagleton was dropped from the vice presidential slot on the Democratic ticket due to revelations that he had sought treatment for depression. A few years later, noted columnist Garry Wills argued that George Wallace was unfit to serve as president because a physical disability (he had been shot) might cover up a mental disability. And no one really knows if Reagan did in fact begin to show signs of Alzheimer’s while in office, as his son has alleged, but I can’t blame his team for concealing it if he did. Ironically, all this stigma about mental health and public office ignores history. One study found that half of all U.S. presidents showed symptoms of mental illness, often while in office, including widely acknowledged leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Lyndon Johnson. Such neuro-diversity is a core feature of humanity, so it’s not surprising that our leaders reflect the broader realities of our mental variations.)

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/05/us/college-protests-alumni-donations.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Scott MacConnell cherishes the memory of his years at Amherst College, where he discovered his future métier as a theatrical designer. But protests on campus over cultural and racial sensitivities last year soured his feelings. Now Mr. MacConnell, who graduated in 1960, is expressing his discontent through his wallet. In June, he cut the college out of his will. “As an alumnus of the college, I feel that I have been lied to, patronized and basically dismissed as an old, white bigot who is insensitive to the needs and feelings of the current college community,” Mr. MacConnell, 77, wrote in a letter to the college’s alumni fund in December, when he first warned that he was reducing his support to the college to a token $5. A backlash from alumni is an unexpected aftershock of the campus disruptions of the last academic year. Although fund-raisers are still gauging the extent of the effect on philanthropy, some colleges — particularly small, elite liberal arts institutions — have reported a decline in donations, accompanied by a laundry list of complaints. Alumni from a range of generations say they are baffled by today’s college culture. Among their laments: Students are too wrapped up in racial and identity politics. They are allowed to take too many frivolous courses. They have repudiated the heroes and traditions of the past by judging them by today’s standards rather than in the context of their times. Fraternities are being unfairly maligned, and men are being demonized by sexual assault investigations. And university administrations have been too meek in addressing protesters whose messages have seemed to fly in the face of free speech.)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/pope-not-right-to-talk-about-violent-terrorist-islam/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pope Francis said Sunday he won’t label Islam as “terrorist” because that would be unfair and not true. Reporters aboard the papal plane flying him home after a pilgrimage to Poland, the day after extremists slit the throat of an elderly priest celebrating Mass in a French church, asked him why he never uses the word “Islam” to describe terrorism or other violence. While in Poland, Francis made an unscheduled stop at a church in Krakow to implore God to protect people from the “devastating wave” of terrorism in many parts of the world. When asked why he didn’t describe the priest’s murder and other attacks as Islamic terrorism, Francis replied he won’t do that because “it’s not right to identify Islam with violence. It’s not right and it’s not true.”  “I believe that in every religion there is always a little fundamentalist group,” he said. “I don’t like to talk of Islamic violence because, every day, when I go through the newspapers, I see violence, this man who girls his girlfriend, another who kills his mother-in-law,” Francis said, in apparent reference to crime news in predominantly Catholic Italy. “And these are baptized Catholics. If I speak of Islamic violence, then I have to speak of Catholic violence.” “In Islam, not all are violent, not all the Catholics are violent,” he said. “It’s like a fruit salad, everything’s in there. Noting he has spoken with imams, he concluded: “I know how they think, they are looking for peace.”  As for ISIS, he said, the Islamic State group “presents itself with a violent identity card, but that’s not Islam.” Francis spoke on the day when Muslims in France and Italy flocked to Sunday Mass in a show of interfaith solidarity following a string of extremist attacks threatening to sharpen religious divides across Europe.)

http://foxillinois.com/news/local/christian-county-sheriff-reacts-to-new-marijuana-law-08-01-2016
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Christian County sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp is condemning Illinois’ new marijuana decriminalization law. Governor Bruce Rauner signed the bill Friday removing criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana. Now possession of 10 grams of marijuana or less is considered a civil violation, similar to a traffic ticket. Kettelkamp says the change won’t save his department time, because drugs can lead to more serious crimes. “I think this is a big mistake for our legislators. I just wish the legislators would just spend one day, or a couple days, in law enforcement’s shoes and see from the people that use marijuana,” said Kettelkamp. Kettelkamp tells us he’s worried the new law sends the wrong message to kids who might now think it’s acceptable to use marijuana.)

http://www.nytimes.com/1996/03/13/us/seeking-return-to-ways-of-patronage-in-politics.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It is no secret that the fabled Democratic machine in Chicago stole a vote or two for John F. Kennedy in the 1960 Presidential election. It is less well-known that Republicans in downstate Illinois were padding the vote for Richard M. Nixon. In fact, while political machines have traditionally been regarded as the offspring of the Democratic Party in big cities, the Illinois Republican Party has hardly been a slouch in flexing its political muscle, known in the state simply as clout. The party has long dominated the suburbs and smaller cities, and throughout the 1980’s, when James R. Thompson was Governor, a job applicant typically needed a letter of endorsement from a party leader. So perhaps it is fitting that Republican politicians here are rising to the defense of political patronage. In 1990 the United States Supreme Court, ruling in a case brought by five frustrated job seekers against the Republican Party of Illinois, outlawed political favoritism in all government hiring except for policy-making posts, saying that only merit should count. This was a strange concept in Illinois, where the spoils system had always been rather the point of politics. This spring the issue is heading for the Court again in a different case, and Gov. Jim Edgar, a Republican, filed a brief last month asking the Justices to reverse its ban on government favoritism. He argues that patronage actually helps the democratic system. As another top Republican here, State Representative Lee Daniels, put it, patronage “doesn’t need to be a dirty word.” In response, civil libertarians say it is an embarrassment for the state to have political leaders arguing against meritocracy. “It seems only in Illinois,” said Harvey Grossman, the head of the American Civil Liberties Union office in Chicago, “would state officials be willing to publicly endorse the corrosive practice” of patronage. But Jeffrey Coleman, a lawyer for Governor Edgar, said it was simply logical for a political leader to prefer workers who are friends, rather than foes. “George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson and every administration at the Federal and state level for 200 years used political consideration in hiring,” Mr. Coleman said. “And it seems rather ironic that nine men and women who were appointed to the Supreme Court for political reasons would say that politics should play no role in the selection of public employees.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As members of the baby-boom generation continue to selfishly retire, waltzing off to engage in ridiculous activities like “enjoying life” and “relaxing,” the rest of us are left with the drudgery of work and, in many cases, a notable lack of institutional knowledge. According to the Pew Research Center, 10,000 baby boomers are reaching age 65 each day. While it’s been on the horizon for years, the reality of the boomer brain drain is still catching companies off guard, making “knowledge transfer” the buzzword du jour. Before veteran workers depart, it’s crucial they pass along not just a rough outline of how they do their jobs or a filing cabinet stuffed with old manuals and reports but some of the deeper knowledge gained from years of experience. It’s something Dorothy Leonard, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and co-founder of the consulting firm Leonard-Barton Group, calls “tacit knowledge.”)

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2016-07-31/tom-kacich-hillary-made-news-even-when-she-was-22.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: By the time she was 22 years old Hillary Rodham had been elected student body president at Wellesley College, had given the first-ever student commencement speech at the Massachusetts college that is still exclusively for women, had been featured in an issue of Life magazine, had been accused on the front page of the Boston Globe of upstaging a U.S. senator and had been denounced in an editorial by her hometown newspaper, the Chicago Tribune. Even 900 miles away at the University of Illinois, Rodham was mentioned by Illinois Gov. Richard Ogilvie in a commencement address as representative of the student idealism of that time. All of that attention 47 or more years ago undoubtedly prepared Rodham — the future Hillary Clinton — for a lifetime in the public eye, including a historic run for president. The one-time “Goldwater Girl” from Park Ridge shed her conservative values while at Wellesley and within four years had moved 180 degrees politically, backing anti-war Democrat Sen. Eugene McCarthy for president in 1968. She became a student leader, ran for president of the student government and on May 31, 1969, gave the commencement speech that attracted so much attention. Ruth Adams, the president of Wellesley, introduced Rodham as “cheerful, good humored, good company and a good friend to all of us.” In her prepared remarks Rodham talked mostly of her classes’ time at Wellesley, of protests and demonstrations, and shared power and responsibility, and of the value of education.)

HERALD & REVIEW
— Legislators: Big pay for a part-time job – Editorial  (DIERSEN: Who hints/implies/argues/shouts that you are/were overpaid?  The following hint/imply/argue/shout that the federal government overpaid me: those who are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors. Many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass a background investigation, e) because they cannot pass a physical examination, f) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or g) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Most folks would say that a salary of $100,000 for a full-time job is a pretty good gig. A six-figure salary for a part-time job is the stuff of fantasy. Except for the Illinois General Assembly, where the majority of members pull down more than $100,000 a year for what is a part-time job. For taxpayers, the news gets worse. When other costs such as pension, mileage, per diem payments and insurance are figured in, taxpayers pay about $32 million a year to the 177 legislators, according to a new report by the Illinois Policy Institute. Illinois legislators are the highest paid in the Midwest and fifth-highest in the nation. It should be noted that this group of 177 legislators have combined to turn Illinois into the worst-run state in the nation. Pay for performance isn’t part of the formula.)

ABC7
— The Sandack mystery continues – Chuck Goudie, Barb Markoff and Ross Weidner
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/rep-sandack-quits-top-gop-post-over-internet-scam/1444005/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a heavily blacked-out police report provided to the I-Team by Downers Grove police, Republican state Rep. Ronald L. Sandack made an allegation on July 14 of “an Internet scam.” Ten days later Sandack announced he was resigning from his elected position, claiming he was suffering the effects of “cyber security issues.” Neither Sandack at the time he quit, nor the suburban police report obtained Tuesday afternoon, offer any clarity as to what actually happened-or why it was serious enough to warrant resignation. Sandack has not responded to our numerous requests for information. A person who answered the front door at his home today said that the ex-legislator was at work. He is a partner at a downtown Chicago law firm and has not been available there. Sandack said in a cryptic statement on Sunday that he was forced to re-evaluate his “continued public service” due to the threat. The mostly-redacted police report does put the date of the “Internet scam” as July 7, a full week before Sandack actually reported whatever it was to police. There is no explanation why it took one week to report something serious enough to eventually cause his resignation. Oddly, Mr. Sandack was a voracious social media communicator until the cyber threat occurred-said to have been fake accounts set-up in his name (or his family members.) Currently, his Facebook and Twitter pages are down and there is no trace of whatever bogus accounts may have been established. Downers Grove police have apparently assigned at detectives to look into the allegation, according to the report. However, police officials have offered no additional details, clarity or assistance to help the public understand what may have occurred, whether there is any kind of public threat or the status of the investigation.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— GOP State Rep. Ron Sandack reported ‘Internet scam’ to cops – Chris Fusco
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/gop-state-rep-ron-sandack-reported-internet-scam-to-cops/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican state Rep. Ronald L. Sandack, a top of ally of Gov. Bruce Rauner, went to the police department in his hometown to report an “Internet scam” earlier this month — but a report about the incident reveals little about what led Sandack to abruptly resign his seat from the Illinois House over the weekend. Sandack issued a statement to the political blog Capitol Fax on Sunday saying that “cyber security issues” forced him to re-evaluate his “continued public service.” But the police report released Tuesday afternoon by the Downers Grove Police Department offers no details about what might have happened to Sandack as virtually the entire narrative is blacked out. Sandack didn’t immediately return a telephone call seeking comment. More to come on this developing story.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160726/news/160729247/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: DuPage GOP leaders will have the biggest say in choosing his replacement, but the Will County Republican Central Committee must be consulted because a small number of precincts in the 81st District are in that county. Krajewski said he’s scheduled to meet Saturday morning with Havel. In the meantime, he’s asking other Republicans interested in the position to send him their resume. “We’ve got to see who the candidates are,” Krajewski said. Depending on the number of applicants, a decision could come Saturday or Sunday, he said. On Monday, Krajewski said David S. Olsen is the leading candidate to replace Sandack. Olsen, 27, of Downers Grove, serves as vice chairman of the College of DuPage board of trustees, as a Downers Grove village commissioner and as vice chairman of the Downers Grove Township Republican Organization. He has expressed interest in the House seat in the past. . .If he’s chosen as Sandack’s successor, one decision Olsen needs to make is whether he will resign from the Downers Grove village council or from COD board. “That’s something that has to be discussed with my mayor, Mayor (Martin) Tully, and with (COD board) Chairman Deanne Mazzochi, and with Brian Krajewski and others,” Olsen said. “I think it’s premature to speculate on what I would do.” He said his main goal is to do “the right thing” for residents in Downers Grove, COD’s district and the 81st District.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Online impostors are real. But is Ron Sandack’s story? – Eric Zorn
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/zorn/ct-ron-sandack-illinois-republican-resigns-perspec-zorn-0727-jm-20160726-column.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Something doesn’t quite add up in the “official” story of why Illinois House Republican floor leader Ron Sandack abruptly resigned over the weekend. The scrappy Downers Grove pol said in a brief statement that “cybersecurity issues” prompted him to “re-evaluate” his political career and immediately step down in order to (stop me if you’ve heard this before) spend more time with his family. Reportedly, the cybersecurity issue in question was that spoofers had created fake Facebook and Twitter accounts in his name, thus threatening to damage his reputation. That’s certainly an unpleasant development if true. And the claim is plausible. Social media have yet to solve the impostor problem, as I was reminded just the other day when I got a Facebook friend request that appeared to be from another Chicago newspaper columnist with whom I was already connected. The request not only used his name but also a photo of him swiped from his real page. Online impostors don’t target just pols, pundits and other well-known figures. I routinely get Facebook friend requests from those who have either assumed others’ identities or simply invented personas, often of scantily clad women, in what seems to be a desperate and feeble attempt to peddle cheap sunglasses or other consumer goods.)

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/07/21/kirk-calls-for-debate-in-spanish-with-challenger-duckworth/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Like most of Illinois’ prominent Republicans, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is not at the Republican National Convention.  He’s proposing a series of bilingual debates against Democratic Challenger Tammy Duckworth. Kirk tells CBS2 Special Correspondent Jay Levine that aside from a few physical limitations, he’s fully recovered from the stroke which nearly took his life four years ago. The first-term senator still uses a wheelchair most of the time, but mentally, he says he’s fully recovered. He says he could handle debates. “In fact, I have asked Tammy Duckworth to debate me en espanol,” says Kirk, who is up for other debates, and in English. Kirk has said he won’t endorse his party’s controversial presidential nominee, Donald Trump. He says he’ll write in retired Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Colin Powell, and urge others to do the same. “I don’t think Donald Trump would make a good commander-in-chief, he’s too emotional,” Kirk says of Trump. In many ways, and on many issues, Kirk seems closer to Democrats than Republicans. “I am a moderate, pro-choice pro-gay rights guy who wants to spend less and tax less,” Kirk says. He says he also bucks his party where the NRA is concerned. Levine asked Kirk about a series of controversial statements he has made in recent memory. That includes a reference last year to Chicago’s South Side, when he referred to an unmarried colleague as a “bro with no ho.” “When you’re in a race like I’m in, everything is taken the wrong way,” Kirk says. But then he almost immediately let fly another headscratcher about the therapeutic benefits of pinot grigio. He says the wine has helped him talk more clearly. “Suddenly, as the pinot grigio hit the brain stem, my speech abilities came back. And I said to my girlfriend, ‘OK, it’s going to be only pignot grigio.’”  Kirk has waged a long, hard battle to recover from that life-threatening stroke. Now, he’s fighting for his political life, for a U.S. Senate seat Democrats feel may be their best chance to take that chamber from the GOP.)

WBEZ
— Illinois GOP Chairman Tim Schneider Urges Trump Supporters To Get Involved – Tony Arnold  (DIERSEN: QUESTION: If/when Schneider is asked what should Illinois Republicans do to keep up to date with news and commentary of interest to Illinois Republicans, how should he respond? ANSWER: Not only read GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails every morning and every evening at
www.gopillinois.com, but subscribe at that website to get those emails each and every morning and evening.  GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails are free of charge and they contain no advertising.  The Illinois Republican Party (IRP) would love to put out emails like GOPUSA Illinois Editor Dave Diersen does, but the IRP could never afford to pay the millions of dollars each year that would cost.)
https://www.wbez.org/shows/wbez-news/illinois-gop-chairman-urges-trump-supporters-to-get-involved/63425fd9-bd8a-4c80-a0b3-6b3610b3a8a5
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With some Illinois Donald Trump supporters at odds with the state’s Republican party, Illinois GOP Chairman Tim Schneider asked Trump supporters to get involved in races beside the presidential campaign when they return from Cleveland. Schneider said the state GOP organization has more tools to help elect Trump – and other Republican candidates – than political newcomers, who haven’t been involved in the party, can do alone. One way in particular Schneider said the state party can help candidates, is through personal data collection on voters. “We know more about you, I hate to say it, than you think,” Schneider said Thursday morning at the final breakfast meeting of the Illinois Republican delegation. “I mean, we know so much about you because of the data that we’re getting. I can tell you that we get the information from your credit cards and where you buy – what cable TV stations that you watch.” Schneider said all that information helps the Republican Party advertise to swing voters, instead of just the voters who are likely to mark ballots for the GOP regardless of advertisements. He said if Trump supporters want to help their candidate in a bigger way, they should get more involved in the established Republican Party because it already has a way to target specific voters for campaign literature. This comes as earlier in the week, Schneider introduced himself – and the state Republican Party – as the friend – not the enemy – of Trump supporters wary of party leaders who oppose Trump for president. “You all need the Illinois Republican Party,” Schneider said to the political newcomers who make up a lot of the Illinois Republican delegation at national convention. “We need you and you need us. You need us because we are the framework. We’re the grassroots. We’re the get-out-the-vote program. We’re the phone banks. We’re the data.” Schneider credited Bruce Rauner’s 2014 campaign for governor, in which Rauner contributed millions of dollars from his own bank account, for helping build the state GOP’s database on voters. Schneider says Republicans are targeting 22 state legislative districts currently held by Democrats around Illinois that he thinks can flip to Republican this November. Schneider says this election could help take away the Democratic supermajorities in the state House and Senate – if more political newcomers like the Trump delegates get involved.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: With one day left in the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, some members of the Illinois delegation in Cleveland are already sure this week has been one of the best of their lives. They say the RNC has been energizing and inspiring, but also very expensive. Many of them have tried to find ways to cut costs, and some of those tactics are more intimate than others.)

— CTA, Metra are unworthy ‘social engineering,’ GOP says – GREG HINZ  (DIERSEN: While I worked for IRS for almost 9 years and for GAO for almost 18 years, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were overwhelmingly anti-automobile.  They viewed automobiles a) as being things that people use to escape Democrat-run cities and/or b) as things that were made by overpaid UAW members.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20160721/BLOGS02/160729936/cta-metra-are-unworthy-social-engineering-gop-says
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Did you realize that, when you took Metra, Pace or the Chicago Transit Authority to work or school today, you were engaged in “social engineering?” Well, you were, according to a section of the 2016 Republican Platform that was adopted this week and on which Donald Trump and Mike Pence will now run. And it’s time for such “government transit” to get its hands off of the U.S. Highway Trust Fund, the GOP says. Under current law, proceeds from the federal 18.4 cents a gallon tax on gasoline are split between roads and transit, with the latter usually getting about a fifth of the total. The fund has come perilously close to running short in recent years, in part because people are driving less but the per-gallon tax has remained frozen for many years. Faced with that, GOP House lawmakers a few years ago moved to switch the entire amount to roads, something that would have forced transit to battle it out for every other demand for federal general funds. That got squelched when a handful of GOP congressmen from urban areas, including Chicago, revolted. But the idea has never quite died among GOP conservatives, mostly from rural and suburban districts. the 2012 party platform called for an end to the diversion, but left it at that. . .The new version goes considerably further.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republicans from across the country gathered in Cleveland this week to nominate Donald Trump as their presidential candidate, and while there was some discord in the party ranks, the GOP was united in its desire to cut the size and scope of government. The speakers articulated few specifics of a government management agenda, but did not shy away from criticizing the Obama administration for expanding the roles of agencies and their regulatory reach. In his acceptance speech Thursday, Republican nominee Donald Trump to vowed “no tolerance for government incompetence.” He spent much of his speech discussing national security and government’s role in protecting it. “The most basic duty of government is to defend the lives of its own citizens,” Trump said. “Any government that fails to do so is a government unworthy to lead.” Trump promised to cut waste across government on an expedited timeframe. “We are going to ask every department head in government to provide a list of wasteful spending projects that we can eliminate in my first 100 days,” Trump said. “The politicians have talked about it; I’m going to do it.”)

— California U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa: Trump Probably Won’t Build Actual Wall – Paris Schutz
http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2016/07/20/congressman-trump-probably-wont-build-actual-wall
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It is one of the cornerstones of Donald Trump’s campaign platform, and the issue that has inflamed passions on both sides: Trump has pledged repeatedly to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and to have Mexico foot the estimated $5 to $10 billion to pay for it. But a high-ranking Republican congressman on Wednesday told the Illinois delegation that Trump’s promise amounts to little more than a metaphor for fixing the country’s broken immigration system. It doesn’t necessarily mean a physical wall will get built, he said. “Donald Trump speaks in shorthand too much,” said California U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa in a breakfast speech before Illinois delegates. “‘Build a wall’ is code for, ‘Let’s get our immigration system working so that, if you’re here legally, we work with you. If you’re illegally here, you don’t get a job.’” Illinois U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, who says he will vote for Trump but won’t necessarily support him, says the nominee has been unclear on the specifics of his policy as it relates to immigration reform and border control. And he says a physical wall across the entire border with Mexico isn’t a given. “This is up to Donald Trump to define these terms that he articulated in the campaign,” Roskam said. “We need control of the border. If it’s a physical manifestation, or high tech, or whatever it happens to be, that’s up to him to tell us.” But the Trump delegates in attendance weren’t buying the concept of wall as metaphor. “Trump says build a physical wall, I think that means he’s going to build a wall,” said delegate Maria Hough. “I think the congressman is sadly mistaken,” said delegate Stella Kozanecki, an 80-year-old first timer from downstate Mount Vernon. “It means build a wall.” Trump delegate Mark Fratella, an Evanston public school teacher who lives in Elmhurst, takes an all-of-the-above approach. “The ‘build a wall’ has two meanings: the physical meaning and just securing our borders, because we don’t know who’s coming into this country,” Fratella said. “We want a wall, but we want a door in that wall for legal, orderly immigration.”)

— GOP revokes delegate’s credentials for ‘racist’ FB post – Lynn Sweet
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/sweet-gop-revokes-delegate-credentials-racist-fb-post/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois Republican Party on Wednesday revoked the convention credentials of a Donald Trump delegate from Chicago “for publicly-made racist comments and threats of violence” on a Facebook posting. Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider told the Sun-Times the party, “has zero tolerance for racism of any kind and threats of violence against anyone.”  The executive committee of the Illinois GOP party made the decision regarding Fifth Congressional District delegate Lori Gayne after party officials said she confirmed to them she was the author of the offending post, made under a different name. Gayne was elected a Trump delegate in the March Illinois primary from the North Side district. Gayne told the Sun-Times on Wednesday she wrote the post, after a reporter from the newspaper raised the matter with her on Tuesday evening, while she was with the Illinois delegation on the convention floor. The Republican National Convention welcome party was thrown Sunday at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Gayne wrote, over a photo of law enforcement officials on the roof on the iconic building on the Lake Erie shore: “Our brave snipers just waiting for some “N—- to try something. Love them.”  She used an abbreviation for the racial slur. Schneider said in a statement, as party chairman,  “I condemn in the strongest terms the racist comments and threats of violence made by Ms. Gayne, a member of our delegation to the Republican National Convention. Ms. Gayne brought the statements to the attention of Illinois Republican Party staff after being contacted by Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times,” Schneider said in statement. “Let me be unequivocally clear — racism and threats of violence have absolutely no place in the Illinois Republican Party or in a civil and inclusive society. “The Illinois Republican Party believes that inciting violence against anyone attending the RNC places state delegations, demonstrators exercising their First Amendment rights, and law enforcement personnel needlessly in harm’s way. Therefore, I have consulted with the Executive Committee of the Illinois Republican Party and have revoked Ms. Gayne’s credentials as a delegate to the Republican National Convention.” Gayne offered her “deepest apologies” in a statement, saying, “I strongly regret the offensive statements I recently made on social media. While I in no way intended to make racist or threatening statements, I now realize that they could be interpreted that way. “I have the deepest respect for members of law enforcement and know that they put their lives on the line every day. I made the offensive statements in my attempt to applaud their courage in the face of protests. But I now realize that my statements were ignorant and intolerant, and they cannot be justified. “The statements do not reflect my character or feelings toward minorities. As a Jewish woman, I know that racism of any kind is unjustifiable and hurtful, even when it’s not intended. I also know that violence is never the answer to political disagreements. I respect the decision of the Illinois Republican Party and understand their concerns about my safety and that of the entire Illinois delegation. Please accept my deepest apologies.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: With frustration and resignation, the City Council’s Finance Committee on Tuesday signed off on three more police misconduct settlements totaling $4.72 million, including the last of 25 lawsuits stemming from the dirty work of former Special Operations Section kingpin Jerome Finnigan. The settlements bring this year’s total to $18.6 million and the tab for settling police abuse cases over the last decade to well over $500 million. The largest of the three settlements, for $3.75 million, will go to the three teenage children of Esau Castellanos-Bernal. The intoxicated man was fatally shot by police after crashing his car in 2013. The case involves an alleged cover-up by Chicago Police officers. It’s the subject of an ongoing investigation by the FBI and the soon-to-be-disbanded Independent Police Review Authority.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Chris Gramm was surprised to be a center of attention after the first day of the Republican National Convention.  Gramm, a Bloomington resident and presidential delegate from Illinois’ 18th Congressional District, appeared on the front page of an early edition of The New York Times after stepping up to represent delegates opposed to presumed candidate Donald Trump. Gramm, who was elected during the March 15 primary election as a delegate for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, was pictured shouting Monday for a roll call vote of states on the convention rules — a vote meant to embarrass Trump. “I want to make the establishment know there are people that won’t just lay down for whatever they want, and I’m happy to be the face of that movement,” he said. Later editions of Tuesday’s Times featured a front-page photo of prospective First Lady Melania Trump, who gave a headline speech Monday night. Gramm and fellow delegate Jim Fisher, a Hudson resident, told The Pantagraph on Tuesday about their experiences so far:)

NEW YORK TIMES
— How Melania Trump’s Speech Veered Off Course and Caused an Uproar – MAGGIE HABERMAN and MICHAEL BARBARO
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/20/us/politics/melania-trump-convention-speech.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The speechwriters, Matthew Scully and John McConnell, sent Ms. Trump a draft last month, eager for her approval. Weeks went by. They heard nothing. Inside Trump Tower, it turned out, Ms. Trump had decided she was uncomfortable with the text, and began tearing it apart, leaving a small fraction of the original. Her quiet plan to wrest the speech away and make it her own set in motion the most embarrassing moment of the convention: word-for-word repetition of phrases and borrowed themes from Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic convention eight years ago. The ridicule from both Democrats and Republicans was instant and relentless, disrupting what was meant to be a high point of the convention. It was, by all accounts, an entirely preventable blunder, committed in front of an audience of 23 million television viewers, that exposed the weaknesses of an organization that has long spurned the safeguards of a modern presidential campaign, such as the free software that detects plagiarism. “It just shouldn’t have happened,” said Matt Latimer, a White House speechwriter for President George W. Bush. “This was an easy home run speech: a successful, attractive immigrant talking about her husband.” Nobody seemed more startled than Mr. and Ms. Trump, who arrived in New York on Tuesday morning after a flight from Cleveland to find themselves at the center of a bizarre uproar over authenticity, plagiarism and a knotty question: Why did the wife of the Republican nominee borrow passages from the wife of the current Democratic president? Ms. Trump spent most of Tuesday out of sight, while her husband vented his frustration and anger throughout the day. This account of how a speech written by professionals was transformed into the problematic version delivered on Monday night at the Quicken Loans Arena is based on interviews with more than a dozen people involved in and close to the Trump campaign. Many of them spoke on the condition of anonymity to disclose details that were supposed to remain confidential. It reinforces dominant themes of Mr. Trump’s campaign that still linger from the primary, which his team has struggled to change: a deliberately bare-bones campaign structure, a slapdash style and a reliance on the instincts of the candidate over the judgments of experienced political experts, like Mr. Scully and Mr. McConnell. The two original speechwriters were not aware of how significantly the speech had been changed until they saw Ms. Trump deliver it on television Monday night, along with the rest of the country. In the prime-time address, Ms. Trump unfurled a sequence of life lessons — about how “your word is your bond,” about “your dreams and your willingness to work for them,” and the “integrity, passion and intelligence” of her parents — in the same sequence and using much of the same language that Mrs. Obama employed in 2008. Just like Mrs. Obama, Ms. Trump explained how she wanted to pass those lessons on to her children and the children of the world. And just like Mrs. Obama, she offered a gauzy invocation about the limitlessness of aspirations when they are matched by determination. In a series of evolving explanations, Trump aides and allies dismissed the episode as a trivial distraction, alternating between outright denial that Ms. Trump’s speech had used word-for-word phrases from Mrs. Obama and blaming the news media. “Ninety-three percent of the speech is completely different,” declared Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey. Paul Manafort, Mr. Trump’s campaign chairman, pegged the number of suspicious words at 50. “And that includes ‘ands’ and ‘thes’ and things like that,” he said on Tuesday. Across the country, slack-jawed Republican political operatives and speechwriters expressed expletive-laden bewilderment at the organizational breakdown allowing such an episode to occur. “It’s like some guy trying to paddle across a river in a rowboat who shoots a hole in his boat,” said Stuart Stevens, who wrote speeches for Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, throughout the 2012 campaign.)

BLOOMBERG
— Senator Ted Cruz Still Has a Plan and He’s Only 45 Years Old – Sasha Issenberg and Steven Yaccino  (DIERSEN: What plans have you had?  GAO audits IRS. In 1980, when I was 31 years old, I transferred from IRS to GAO.  My plan was to get assigned to audits of IRS so that I could use the knowledge of IRS that I had gained by working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 level (currently $77,899-$88,286). But my Democrat GAO superiors and Democrat GAO supervisors had great success in killing my plan.  During the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO 1980-1997, I succeeded in getting assigned to audits of IRS for only 3 years (1986-1988).  Audits of IRS are/were preferred assignments that were to be given only to GAO employees who were Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran.  The Democrats who ran GAO wasted my knowledge of IRS, wasted my career, and forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)
