http://www.newsweek.com/old-americans-suffer-one-worst-wage-gaps-world-688081
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Income inequality is rising and the wage gap is widening for American workers—and the problem is even worse for U.S. senior citizens, a new report shows. It’s so bad, in fact, that the income inequality numbers among the elderly in the U.S. resemble more a report out of a developing country than what would be expected of America. The gap between wealthy and poor seniors is one of the widest in any nation in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The only countries with wider gaps among seniors are Mexico and Chile, according to a study by the OECD and a CNN article. Past generations of retired Americans tended to see increased economic security, but with wages lower in comparison to inflation and fewer middle-class workers retiring with pensions, seniors now are not nearly as financially stable as in the past, according to CNN. Just 29 percent of Americans over 55 years old have a retirement savings account or a pension plan to lean on, a 2015 report from the Government Accountability Office showed. And it only gets worse as younger generations age, another OECD report shows.)

— Rep. Jeanne Ives Inching Toward a GOP Primary Run Against Rauner – Mary Ann Ahern (DIERSEN: If Ives runs for Governor, who would her running mate be and who would run for her House seat?)
http://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/jeannie-ives-run-for-governor-against-rauner-449912963.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives has not ruled out a run for governor and is even being urged to challenge Gov. Bruce Rauner in the upcoming Republican primary. Conservatives have voiced disappointment with Rauner’s record, particularly his recent signing of House Bill 40, an abortion funding and access measure. Ives told NBC 5 she’s “exploring the option by having important conversations with folks around the state” about “challenging the unprincipled and morally bankrupt politicians who have failed to deliver reforms demanded by taxpayers, business and ordinary citizens that have played by the rules and yet, find themselves ignored by leader in both parties.” For now, Ives has not begun circulating petitions for governor, but other conservative members of the Illinois GOP are hoping she will, saying Rauner “has major problems with the base.” Other policies that more conservative members of the party have disagreed with include Rauner’s signing of a bill to effectively turn Illinois into a sanctuary state for undocumented immigrants, as well as a landmark rewrite of the state’s school funding formula. GOP mega donor Dick Uhlein has supported Ives in previous races, and is among those that the Wheaton lawmaker would likely court if she decides to move forward with a statewide run. “This is the people’s seat, not the financiers – even as I recognize that campaigns take financial support. I am fortunate to have had his support before and would hope to gain his and many others’ support in any future race I decide to get involved in – state rep. or otherwise,” Ives said. A West Point graduate, Ives has served in the Illinois House for five years.)

http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2017/10/07/rep-jeanne-ives-inching-closer-run-governor
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, despite buckets of campaign cash, may be in for a primary fight in his 2018 re-election battle for governor. Suburban Republican lawmaker Jeanne Ives (Wheaton) is considering getting in the race, citing her frustration with the governor’s signing of HB40, a law that will increase access to abortion for state Medicaid recipients and would continue to make abortion legal in Illinois should the U.S. Supreme Court choose to overturn it. “Our team is having important conversations around the state about challenging the unprincipled and morally bankrupt politicians who have failed to deliver reforms demanded by taxpayers, businesses and ordinary citizens that have played by the rules and yet, find themselves ignored by both parties,” Ives said. Rauner is facing a revolt from the grassroots of his party, with several Republican lawmakers saying they can’t support him for re-election and are actively looking for an alternative. Former ally John Tillman, head of the libertarian think tank The Illinois Policy Institute, referred to him as “Benedict Rauner” for allegedly “going back on his word” and signing HB40. Ives would appear to be at a significant financial disadvantage, but could level the playing field if she garners the support of political operatives like Dan Proft and uber-funder Dick Uihlein. Last week, Ives told Chicago Tonight she had received numerous calls from people who want her to run. “Absolutely we need to find an alternative to Gov. Rauner. We need to challenge him if he decides to run again,” she said at the time. Ives says she will be speaking at an event in the Rock Island area on Monday.)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— Rift in the Republican Party? – Doug Finke  (DIERSEN: Harris glorifies and praises himself and others who reject planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform.)
http://www.sj-r.com/news/20171007/statehouse-insider-rift-in-republican-party
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With the fallout continuing over Gov. BRUCE RAUNER’s decision to sign the abortion rights bill into law, questions are being raised about whether a significant rift is developing in the state Republican Party. In the immediate aftermath of the bill signing, several Republican lawmakers said they can no longer support Rauner. Since the legislature currently isn’t in session, we have yet to see how that will translate when it comes time to actually vote on something the governor wants — or doesn’t want — to pass. Then there was the announcement last week by Rep. DAVID HARRIS, R-Arlington Heights, that he would not run for re-election. Harris was one of the handful of House Republicans who voted for the final tax and spending package. He gave an impassioned speech as the House was preparing to override Rauner’s veto of the deal in which he said he didn’t get elected to preside over the financial ruin of the state. His vote, though, drew the ire of anti-tax Republicans and also drew himself a primary opponent. In announcing his decision not to run again, Harris told media outlets the Republican Party is at war with itself. He told public radio that he did not see how the infighting would make the party stronger. Rauner was asked about all of that during an appearance in Chicago last week. “We have many passionate members of the Republican Party,” Rauner said. “Not everybody is going to agree on every issue. We can have reasonable disagreements. Reasonable people can reasonably disagree.” He ticked off issues that Republicans can find common ground on, such as lower taxes, more economic growth, less regulations, more efficient government and political reform like term limits. He said “no group is defined by any one issue.” That’s no doubt the case, but we’ll see if the abortion issue — and Rauner’s position on it — is the dominant one as things move forward.)
— In 2016, Springfield dined out a lot, bought less stuff – Tim Landis  (DIERSEN: What is the main reason why you spent less money in 2016? I would have had at least $72,135 more to spend in 2016 if my Democrat superiors had not wasted my career and forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. My GS-13 Step 10 salary back then was $122,991 in today’s dollars, but my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $50,856, or $72,135 less.)
http://www.sj-r.com/news/20171007/analysis-in-2016-springfield-dined-out-lot-bought-less-stuff
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Blame the state budget, online competition or both, but traditional sales tax collections in Springfield continue to fall behind rapid changes in shopping habits. Local consumers spent more on automobiles, groceries and dining out in 2016, according to a just-completed retail market analysis by The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, while they cut back in areas such as general merchandise, household goods and agricultural products. The annual chamber report showed overall retail sales of $2.682 billion, down 1.3 percent from 2015 to the lowest level in three years. But trends varied across 10 spending categories from 2015 to 2016. A more than 18 percent increase in food sales, including supermarkets, pushed spending in the category over $200 million for the first time since the reports started in 2006. The largest declines were for general merchandise, down 12.6 percent, and agricultural equipment and products, down 7.7 percent.)

CHAMPAIGN/URBANA NEWS GAZETTE
— Rauner’s unforced error – Editorial
http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/editorials/2017-10-08/rauners-unforced-error.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner unleashed a political firestorm within his own party by signing controversial abortion legislation into law. The merits of the abortion issue aside — more on that later — it’s patently clear that Gov. Bruce Rauner made a political mess for himself when he signed a new law that provides for taxpayer-funded abortions in Illinois. He double-crossed Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich, to whom he promised a veto, alienated Republican legislators he has demanded loyalty from and outraged single-issue abortion opponents who now consider him an unreliable and, probably, an immoral turncoat. What, politically, did Rauner gain from signing the bill? Nothing. Abortion-rights proponents perceive decisions like the one the governor made as the minimum they are due. They are angry that Rauner waited as long as he did to announce his support for the measure. So Rauner won himself no friends among Democrats and abortion-rights groups; they have at least 100 other reasons to dislike his brand of governance. In one respect, of course, Rauner’s decision vindicates the self-description he provided voters when running in 2014. Rauner said he wasn’t a politician, something he considered a bad thing, but a businessman who knew how to identify and solve problems, something he suggested Illinois desperately needed. Well, it’s abundantly clear that he’s not a politician. The best of politicians are able to read the tea leaves, weigh costs and benefits, and reach conclusions on dual policy and political questions that are not self-destructive. Rauner did the opposite when he signed the abortion legislation. There’s no doubt Democrats intentionally put him in a trick bag when they passed this cynical measure. That’s what members of one party often do to members of the other party — present them with no-win choices sure to raise vigorous criticism. But just because Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan handed Rauner a gun, it didn’t mean the governor had to shoot his own foot. That’s where the substance of this legislation comes into play. People want to cast House Bill 40 as either pro- or anti-abortion. But abortion is legal and has been since the U.S. Supreme Court issued its 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, a constitutionally guaranteed right that abortion opponents, no matter how hard they try, cannot abridge. Despite that, abortion-rights proponents have steadily and dishonestly warned since 1973 that Roe is on the verge of being overturned, something that has not happened and remains unlikely to happen. H.B. 40 does two things. It would keep abortion legal if Roe were someday overturned. How ironic it is that our legislators busy themselves passing legislation addressing issues that are not, and may never be, problems while they studiously avoid addressing existing problems that are crippling the state? That provision is essentially meaningless because, in the unlikely event Roe is overturned, the issue would return to the individual states for a legislative solution. Does anyone really think that Illinois legislators wouldn’t rush to reinstate legal abortion? Democrats control Illinois, and few if any of them are willing to challenge the party’s abortion-rights litmus test. The second measure, one much more obnoxious to rank-and-file citizens, is the new mandate that provides taxpayer-funded abortions for individuals covered by state-employee health insurance or those on the Medicaid welfare program. Given the disgraceful fact that one in four Illinois residents is on Medicaid, it’s a virtual certainty that many thousands more abortions will be performed — all at taxpayer expense. Despite what abortion-rights proponents want to acknowledge, there are deep moral questions involved here. To compel all taxpayers — especially those with legitimate and sincere antipathy about the medical procedures that terminate lives of unborn children — to finance abortions is a real slap in the face. On that question alone, Rauner would have been on solid ground to explain — in a persuasive and principled way — why it would be a mistake to press financial responsibility for funding abortions on the public at large. There is no question that Rauner is, for understandable reasons, a flawed chief executive, a duck out of water. It’s not clear whether he’s hard-headed and impulsive, the recipient of bad advice or someone who ignores good advice. But he makes unforced errors, and signing this legislation is one of them. That said, he’s one of the few powerful politicians in Illinois who recognizes the extent to which the state is failing and offers real solutions to restore the state’s weak economy, improve our dire financial standing, eliminate the self-dealing and outright corruption in government and smash a discredited political status quo that is driving productive people from the state. Unfortunately, he made his job that much harder going forward and his retention of the job in 2018 even more problematic with his inept and inconsistent handling of an issue that was, on the merits, much less a Hobson’s choice than he perceived it to be.)

PUBLIUS FORUM
— My Home and Car Vandalized Because I’m a Conservative Writer – Warner Todd Huston  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, anti-Trumps promote hatred of individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://www.publiusforum.com/2017/10/07/home-car-vandalized-im-conservative-writer/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Naturally, as a conservative writer I write on subjects such as Islam and immigration that would goad a liberal to call me such a name. I also have frequently had political yard signs in my yard for the more conservative candidates in my area. S, my home is well known (or at least easily known) as a place where a conservative Republican lives. As to my writing, I’ve never tried to hide where I live nor written under kitschy Internet names. I have always written under my full name, so it probably isn’t too hard for someone to find me if they are serious enough about doing so. At this point, with those two bits of graffiti I began to wonder, is someone was targeting me because of what I do for a living? So, I made a second police report after the garage door incident. Thus far none of these incidents were really too major but they did show signs of coming faster and picking up in severity. I have no troubles with my immediate neighbors. In fact, our neighbors across the street had been on an extended visit to Mexico for the last several months and the neighbors right behind us just moved in and weren’t even here for much of this vandalism. The other neighbors are two elderly neighbors and a middle eastern family I haven’t even really met. I have had no cross words with any of them. But last night it went into high gear. At about 1 AM or so on Saturday morning, I was awakened by a noise outside my home. I can’t really say what the noise was as it woke me from a deep sleep. It was just a shout that awoke me. I looked at my window and saw what struck me as a strange light outside. So, I went to the front door… And saw my car interior on fire… (PICTURE) The surface of my passenger seat was set aflame and the entire interior of the car destroyed. Fortunately it isn’t a new car (it’s a 1999 Oldsmobile 88). But unfortunately, because it is so old I took off the comprehensive coverage and only have liability. So, insurance won’t cover this destruction and I am now without a car. Naturally the police became involved, but they say they won’t classify it as arson because they don’t have any evidence to show for it. A plastic pop bottle was left inside by who ever did this. It smelled of gas to me. Police wondered if I smoked in the car. I don’t smoke cigarettes and only occasionally smoke a cigar but NEVER in a car. If you’ve ever smoked a cigar you know that doing so in a car is a messy, ashy endeavor. I don’t do it. So, there is nothing that should have set my car on fire  7 hours after I last drove it. Also, it was the surface of the seats that went up in flames. Nothing electrical any where near the burn zone. I firmly believe that this is an attack on me because of my writing. This is the tolerant left in action. They are trying to intimidate me. I will not be silenced.)

http://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/268025/decolonize-abolish-bend-knee-dawn-perlmutter
(FROM THE ARTICLE: NFL Football players are bending a knee in protest during the National Anthem for the same reason that cities across the country are abolishing Columbus Day and for the same reason that there are widespread attacks on Confederate monuments, Columbus statues, fallen officer memorials and veterans’ monuments. Symbols of American history and heroism have been methodically transformed into symbols of oppression, genocide and racism, not that the football players understand this. They are just the latest group of useful idiots being manipulated by a long-established resistance movement. Current American resistance movements and their armies of anarchist protesters thoroughly understand the subversive significance of these iconoclastic acts. The abolition of national holidays, the destruction of historic statues, the desecration of heroes’ memorials and publicly disrespecting traditional civic rituals are time tested revolutionary strategies. Bending a knee is just another gesture in the plan to fundamentally transform America’s past and future. The American resistance movement existed long before Trump became president. It is comprised of many surprisingly unrelated national and global organizations from communists to environmentalists to black nationalists. Identity is their philosophy; decolonization is their doctrine; victimhood is their strategy; grievance is their industry; protest is their tactic; and revolution is their goal.)

Advertisements in the nation’s media paid for by federal, state and local authorities totaled about $2 billion from 2013 to 2016, the first three full years of Mr. Peña Nieto’s administration, according to data provided by the government. This money, say critics, is one of the most severe restrictions on the media’s freedom of expression here, often subjecting reporters and editors to government influence, with overtly critical journalists fired, negative stories censored and investigative reporting thwarted. “The ties between government and media is like diabetes: It’s a disease that stops you from leading a normal life,” Mr. Curzio added. “It generates such an alarming feeling that that this is how the establishment works.”)

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT
— Tennessee GOP Tightens Rules for Who Can Run as Republican – AP (DIERSEN: In my opinion, rules for who can run as a Republican in Illinois should be made much tighter. Ever-increasingly, voters in my precinct who cast Republican primary ballots make it clear to me that they vote for Democrats in general elections. Ever-increasingly, candidates who have cast Republican primary ballots make it clear to everyone that they are really RINOs, Democrats, Libertarians, or Greens. Most commonly they reject the traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks in the Republican Party platform and the Illinois Republican Party platform. Most commonly, they reject the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) resolution against video gambling.  Most commonly, they focus on getting rid of Republicans like me who support the aforesaid planks and resolution. They stress that I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, MTRCC webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc.)
https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/tennessee/articles/2017-10-07/tennessee-gop-tightens-rules-for-who-can-run-as-republican
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the little-noticed change to party bylaws approved this summer, candidates must now have voted in three out of the last four GOP state or federal level primaries to be considered bona fide Republican candidates. For candidates seeking to appear on next year’s ballot that will mean voting histories can be scrutinized going back to the August 2012 primary. The previous standard was for candidates to have voted in two of the last four GOP primaries. Exceptions in the new rules will be made for candidates not old enough to have voted in the last four primaries, moved from another state or had an illness or military service that prevented them from voting. A letter from established Republicans to vouch for GOP newcomers could override the primary voting requirement, at the chairman’s discretion. Challenging a candidate’s bona fide status requires a complaint from two Republican voters. But in another change, those complaints must be made from the same district the candidate is running in to avoid activists from trying to interfere with races outside their home areas. Golden, who will have the final say over all challenges, said he expects successful efforts to oust candidates to be rare.)

— U.S. Halt in Visa Services Leaves Cuban Families in Limbo – ERNESTO LONDOÑO
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/05/world/americas/cuba-us-visas.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cubans have long regarded emigrating to the United States as something of a birthright derived from the privations they endured as a result of sanctions that Washington has imposed on Cuba for decades. Last week, for the first time in decades, the United States effectively shut down the immigration pipeline from the island as it sharply reduced its staff at the embassy in Havana in response to mysterious ailments there, leaving in limbo more than 100,000 Cubans, most of whom are seeking to reunite with relatives. The decision to indefinitely suspend visa processing at the embassy — one of the busiest consular posts in the region — could mean that the United States will fail to honor its obligations under a 1994 deal that requires the admission of at least 20,000 Cuban immigrants a year, current and former American diplomats say. The accord was reached in an effort to stem an exodus by Cubans who took to the seas in rafts by the thousands in the 1990s trying to reach Florida.)

http://www.tampabay.com/florida-politics/2017/10/05/still-booming-with-retirees-the-villages-gives-trump-gop-edge-in-florida/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Yet over time, the explosive growth has fueled a remarkable, somewhat under-the-radar demographic trend that is playing an increasingly key role in the country’s most prized swing state. Overwhelmingly white and Republican, The Villages and surrounding areas have offset the rise in Hispanic residents in Central Florida, part of the vaunted I-4 corridor where elections are decided. In a state with a history of bitterly close elections, small shifts matter greatly and this one played a key role in Donald Trump’s narrow victory.)

WBUR
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: An anti-Trump says “Trump Is Getting The Press He Deserves.” Are you getting what you deserve? Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes say that I deserved what I got from my Democrat superiors in the federal government. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat IRS did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974.  My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. Of course, they say that I got what I deserved from the members of TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, Milton Township Republican Central Committee, Illinois Center Right Coalition, American Association of Political Consultants, etc.)

GOVERNMENT EXECUTIVE
— House Approves Budget Plan that Would Cut Federal Employee Benefits – Erich Wagner  (DIERSEN: If you sought a government office or a political office, what would your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes throw at you? They would throw at me that the federal government dramatically overpaid me and that my federal retirement benefits are much too generous. In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
http://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2017/10/house-approves-budget-would-cut-federal-benefits/141582/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Jessica Klement, legislative director of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, described the potential cuts to federal compensation as “hypocrisy.” “This sets the stage for the federal community to pay for tax reform,” she said. “You’re paying for middle class tax cuts on the backs of middle class federal employees and retirees. It goes against the fundamental premise of this tax reform package.” Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., the vice ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, called the budget resolution “ruinous,” and said that while his committee would be responsible for $32 billion in cuts, the cost of the overall budget to federal workers and retirees could reach as high as $163 billion over the next decade. “Federal employee pay and benefits are not the cause of this country’s deficit and debt,” Connolly said. “The federal workforce has already contributed nearly $200 billion toward reducing the country’s deficits in the form of pay freezes, pay raises insufficient to keep pace with inflation, furloughs and increased retirement contributions. We should honor and revere the service of our federal workforce, not denigrate it with the attacks included in this ugly budget.” National Treasury Employees Union National President Tony Reardon decried the proposal, which he said would unfairly punish government employees. “On paper, it may look like a way to save money but in the real world, cutting the paychecks and retirements of federal employees, just to help pay for tax cuts for the wealthy, is a mean-spirited way to build a national budget,” Reardon said. “Since when is it acceptable to attack the very people who are providing hurricane relief, protecting clean air and water, conducting cutting-edge scientific research, enforcing the tax laws, securing the border, maintaining the national parks and guarding our financial system?”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The situation is sickeningly familiar to anyone who works on — or reads — a metropolitan daily newspaper, whether it’s in New Orleans, Detroit or just about any other American city. The paper is hurting financially. It cuts reporters, photographers and editors to make ends meet. Then it cuts even deeper. The journalism suffers, but the paper’s work is still vital to its community. And a question looms: Will it even survive the next decade? “The real crisis in American journalism is at the local and metro level,” says Jim Friedlich, executive director of the Lenfest Institute for Journalism in Philadelphia, founded last year to save local journalism in Philadelphia and spread the cure around the nation. With the death of their old business model — based on once-plentiful print advertising — newsrooms are trying something new, he said. Like never before, they are turning to philanthropic sources and community support for sustenance.)

DAILY HERALD
— Suburban GOP upset enough with abortion bill to find challenger to Rauner?  Wheaton’s Ives ‘flattered’ at buzz for a possible candidacy – Susan Sarkauskas
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170929/suburban-gop-upset-enough-with-abortion-bill-to-find-challenger-to-rauner
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wheaton Republican state Rep. Jeannie Ives said Friday she is flattered by all the talk about whether she will run against incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner in the March primary. Especially after Rauner signed a law Thursday to have Medicaid pay for abortions, he is “unelectable as a Republican,” she said. . .Ives’ name is being thrown about on radio, social media and print as a strong primary challenger to Rauner who would draw support from outraged social conservatives. “That’s very flattering … but there’s been no decision on my part,” Ives said. She was one of many Republican legislators who publicly campaigned for Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda,” which dealt with money-related matters such as workers’ compensation and pensions. But she called Thursday’s decision on abortion “egregious” and “very extreme.” “Everybody I talk to is disavowing him. … This is a bridge too far for most Republicans,” she said. Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti of Wheaton released a statement disagreeing with Rauner but also saying she would continue to work with him to accomplish other goals. State Sen. Jim Oberweis, also a fan of the Turnaround Agenda, said Rauner should have vetoed the bill on cost alone, saying the state is in “deep financial stress” and can’t afford new spending. He is also disappointed with Rauner’s recent actions concerning treatment of undocumented immigrants. But, he said, he knew Rauner was not a social conservative. “I respect the man. I think he has done a great job in standing up to Michael Madigan,” Oberweis said. Party unity? Schneider said the party must focus on beating the Democrats. “We need a check on the Democrats in Springfield,” said Pat Brady of St. Charles, former leader of the state Republican Party and a Rauner supporter. He doesn’t see a viable challenger to Rauner, especially since he has a huge campaign fund and a month of signature-collecting under his belt. Gubernatorial candidates need a minimum of 5,000 signatures on their petitions, which are due Dec. 4. “I think the reality is nobody could beat him in a primary,” Brady said. “The political reality in this state is there are a substantial amount of voters in Cook and the collar counties” that are abortion rights supporters, Brady said. “He took a real strong talking point away from the Democrats.” Ives disagrees. “Money isn’t everything. The grass-roots (Republicans) are very upset. I’m not sure Rauner’s re-electable. “Maybe if he switched parties he might be able to run as a Democrat.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a phone interview, state Rep. Jeanne Ives, a social and economic conservative and West Point graduate from Wheaton, said she’s concluded that Rauner “cannot be elected next year.” “It’s his decision whether or not to run. If he does, I hope we’d put up a primary opponent against him, because I won’t be supporting him,” Ives continued. Asked who that might be, Ives replied, “That’s an open question.” When I said that sounds like she’s interested, she answered, “I’ve not ruled it out,” noting not only Rauner’s “flip flop” on the abortion bill but also his earlier decision to sign bills boosting funding for Chicago Public Schools and directing law enforcement officials not to cooperate with federal immigration agents in many cases involving those in the country illegally.)

— Does Rauner’s abortion decision mean he won’t run again? – Eric Zorn  (DIERSEN: Whose advice is Rauner taking? Obviously, it is from someone who wants him and Sanguinetti to lose the March 20, 2018 Illinois Republican primary. Or is Rauner counting on millions of Democrats to cross over and to vote for him and Sanguinetti in that primary?  Ever-increasingly, in my precinct, those who vote for Democrats in general elections cast Republican primary ballots to do whatever damage that they can.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/zorn/ct-perspec-zorn-rauner-abortion-20170928-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Whether base Republican voters in Illinois are as riled and hungry for disruption of the political order as voters in Alabama is uncertain, but hostile responses from the right during and after Rauner’s announcement suggests that they might well be. “Bruce Rauner is a failed governor who lied to the people of Illinois,” seethed state Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills. “I have given Bruce Rauner every benefit of the doubt,” said a statement from House Republican floor leader Peter Breen. “ I can no longer support him. And whether or not they are able to agree publicly, I know hundreds of elected Republicans, along with hundreds of thousands of Republican voters, who feel the same way I do.” I get that. Opposition to abortion runs strong among Republican voters, and Rauner’s decision to sign a bill that expands Medicaid funding of the procedure and includes abortion services in the health insurance plans for state employees disappoints them profoundly. . .Rauner is a wealthy man who doesn’t need this job and has learned, even if he won’t say so publicly, that he’s not very good at it. Attorney General Lisa Madigan shocked the Illinois political establishment with her recent announcement that she would not seek re-election to a fifth term. A similar announcement from Rauner, while more consequential, would be far less shocking under the circumstances. I didn’t hear back when I queried his campaign about this possibility Thursday. But the haggard man dully answering reporters’ questions that afternoon while bracing for the howls of betrayal from his former supporters didn’t look like someone braced for the political fight of his life. He looked like he was done.)

WILLIAM J KELLY
— Kelly blasts Rauner for signing taxpayer-funded abortion bill  William J. Kelly, Bruce Rauner’s only GOP opponent in the 2018 primary, has issued the following statement in response to the Governor’s signing of HB40 into law today: Bruce Rauner is a serial liar. He lied on the issue of illegal immigration and turned Illinois into a sanctuary state. He lied to Republicans on the 32% income tax increase. He lied to us again on life and, today, he broke his promise to veto HB40, which makes taxpayer-funded abortion law. For the sake of the people of Illinois and the Party, I am calling on Governor Rauner and the GOP leadership to resign immediately. Illinois citizens deserve better.

    — Lt. Governor Sanguinetti’s statement on Governor’s decision to sign HB 40  CHICAGO – The following statement can be attributed to Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti in response to Governor Rauner’s decision to sign HB 40. “As a pro-life Republican, I disagree with the Governor’s decision to sign HB 40. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for a 15-year-old refugee who chose to have me and keep me. “I realize this bill is a political ploy to divide the people of Illinois. While I disagree with the Governor on this, we must focus on our areas of agreement – enacting real reforms we need to turn Illinois around.”

While we disagree on this issue, there remains much on which we agree – and that is what unites us as Republicans. We both agree on the need to make Illinois more competitive, we agree on the need to lift up the less fortunate and we agree on the need to crack down on corruption and wrongdoing. As I have stated several times in the past, as Attorney General, I will enforce all of the laws of the state.”

— Federal employees honored at gala get Trump’s praise – Joe Davidson  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about my Democrat superiors in the federal government who did the most to waste my career and get rid of me. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974.  My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Durkin hiring of former Rauner aide living with reporter raises conflict questions – W.J. Kennedy (DIERSEN: As the Illinois Editor for GOPUSA since 2000, I have always fully disclosed my political activities. I have been a Republican Precinct Committeeman since 1999. I was the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman 2005-2012, a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member 2003-2011, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster 2008-2010 and 2000-2004, an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member 2003-2007, and an American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member 2001-2004. I served on the 2008 Illinois Republican Party (IRP) Platform and Resolutions Committee and I attended the 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 IRP State Conventions as a delegate.)
http://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511221641-durkin-hiring-of-former-rauner-aide-living-with-reporter-raises-conflict-questions
(FROM THE ARTICLE: House Minority Leader Jim Durkin’s (R-Western Springs) hiring of Michael Mahoney, a former aide to Gov. Bruce Rauner, has the potential to cause some conflict of interest problems for WTTW, the primary public broadcasting member station in Chicago. The news of Mahoney’s hiring was reported in a Sept. 17 story in Prairie State Wire. According to the real estate listing site BlockShopper, Mahoney lives with WTTW statehouse reporter Amanda Vinicky in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. “Amanda adheres to our News Standards which require balance, fairness and disclosure,” Mary Field, the station’s executive producer of “Chicago Tonight,” wrote in an email in response to being asked how WTTW would maintain balance in its coverage of the General Assembly. “I believe her works speaks for itself in that regard.” The Prairie State Wire story said that the hiring of Mahoney was being pushed by one of the Springfield’s top lobbyists and deal makers, Nancy Kimme, and David Walsh, Durkin’s top aide. Mahoney, 31, would replace Andrew Freiheit, 46, of Wheaton, who worked for the Illinois House Republicans, including Durkin’s predecessors Lee Daniels and Tom Cross, for more than two decades. Sources said that the move was precipitated by staff changes in Rauner’s office, where Kimme once had unrivaled access to information on state contracts, hiring and legislation. That access has reportedly been shut down with the departure of aides close to her, among them former Chief of Staff Richard Goldberg, Campaign Manager Mike Zolnierowicz, Communications Director Lance Trover and Research Director Edward Murphy. “She (Kimme) needs a new way in,” a lobbyist familiar with the situation told Prairie State Wire. “Durkin and Walsh are looking to help.” Commenting on an earlier story about the appearance of conflicts of interests when reporters are in relationships with people they report on, Prof. Adam Penenberg of New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute — who garnered national attention in 1998 for unmasking serial fabricator Stephen Glass of the New Republic — said that many ethics codes in journalism warn of any appearance of a conflict of interest. “One good rule governing potential conflicts of interest is whether a reporter might pull his or her punches,” he said. “Write a critical story and your spouse could, potentially, suffer the consequences. She could even get fired and result in a significant loss of income.” The Associated Press, in its “News Values and Principles” for Reporters, states: “Editorial employees are expected to be scrupulous in avoiding any political activity, whether they cover politics regularly or not. Non-editorial employees must refrain from political activity unless they obtain approval from a manager.” It also urges discussing any potential conflicts with one’s manager. “And a supervisor must be informed when a spouse — or other members of an employee’s household — has any ongoing involvement in political causes, either professionally or personally,” it reads.)
